SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY Sunday, January 16, 2022 9:00AM/10:30AM *Please stand if you are able PRELUDE WORDS OF WELCOME MINUTE FOR MINISTRY-BrainSavers *CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: The heavens are telling the glory of God. People: May our worship reflect God’s glory. Leader: The firmament proclaims God’s handiwork. People: May we see each other as the handiwork of God. Leader: Let our prayer and praise, our singing and proclamation project the love of God. People: Let us worship! *PRAYER OF INVOCATION **HYMN #450, vs. 1,3,5
Lift High the Cross
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Apostles’ Creed) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the page 2 forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
*GLORY BE TO THE FATHER #813 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Like so many others, Lord, there are times when we sing your praises, but follow from a distance. We welcome you as long as you fit our expectations and answer our every whim. We are quick to point out the shortcomings of others, so as to excuse our own faults. Forgive us and help us to be willing to die to all that is evil, in order to be raised to new life in Christ. In His name we pray. Amen. ASSURANCE 1 John 1:19 Leader: If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just, and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Therefore, let us assure one another of God’s pardon. All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM
Clap Your Hands Chancel Choir
Barbara Boertje
Refrain: Clap your hands, all you people! Shout to God with songs of joy! For the Lord, Most High, is awesome! Great is our King over all the earth! God has gone up with a shout, The Lord with the sound of a trumpet. To God, the King over all the earth, Sing praises with a psalm! Refrain
God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne. So clap and shout and sing to God The songs of highest praise! Refrain
PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION Spirit of God, speak once again through the Words of Scripture that our listening ears may hear Your voice. Help us to place Your Word in our minds, treasure it in our hearts, choose it with our wills, and live it through our bodies. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen. SCRIPTURE Ephesians 2:8-10 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Leader: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God! PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE page 3
THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. *HYMN #466
Jesus, Our Lord and King
OFFERINGS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERTORY *DOXOLOGY #815 Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him, all creatures here below. Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen
OLD HUNDREDTH
*PRAYER OF DEDICATION SCRIPTURE Romans 6:1-14 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. (continued) page 4
Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. SERMON
“BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH”
*HYMN #45
Crown Him with Many Crowns
*BENEDICTION & RESPONSE Now unto Him Now unto Him who is able to keep you from falling And to make you stand in His presence blameless and with great joy. To the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Be the glory and the majesty, dominion and authority, Both now and forever. Amen! *POSTLUDE

WALKING BESIDE MINISTRY Think of a time when you really felt cared for. Chances are someone focused on what you had to say, was attentive to your needs, and listened to how you felt instead of telling you how you should feel or what you should do. Our Walking Beside Ministry is a ministry of listening. Listening is one of the most powerful ministry tools at our disposal. It demonstrates that you care about the other person. It’s listening in such a way as to be able to feel what someone else is truly feeling. Would you like to have a good listener sit with you for a while? If so, contact Pastor Brett, Pastor Jim, or any one of our team members. Laurann Cook Barb Conti Joe Gilleland Steve Haver Moon Kahn

Wyatt Earp “A Life on the Frontier”
Arts at the Rocks showcases their newly renovated stage with Wyatt Earp “A Life on the Frontier”. This is a one-man play performed by Wyatt Earp’s Great Grand Nephew and namesake, Wyatt Earp. It is the story of the legendary lawman that Hollywood didn’t tell! Set in the mid 1920’s an elderly Wyatt Earp tells of his adventures during the final days of the American frontier from Arizona to Alaska. The year is 1928; the place is the couple’s Los Angeles, California apartment. Wyatt reluctantly speaks to (a fictional reporter) Mr. Noble of his time in Tombstone, Arizona. He continues with his life afterwards and occasionally turbulent times of the couple’s 47-year life together as they traveled and prospected throughout the west and Alaska. Meet the man not the myth!

Women’s Bible Studies for the New Year Zoom Mondays at 6:30 PM
Beginning January 10 and January 13!
Join sisters in Christ as we study Hebrews. This 7-week, DVD-based study is taught by Lisa Harper and both groups are led by Kathleen Harris. Please purZoom & In-person chase your book before the first class. Two chances for study: Monday at Thursdays at 10:00 AM 6:30pm via Zoom or Thursday at 10:00am in-person and via Zoom. A little about the study..."Hebrews was a sermon for a specific people and culture in the midst of martyrdom and persecution, but is also so relevant for us today, reminding us to continue walking toward Jesus regardless of our culture or our circumstances. Join Lisa as she journeys through this bridge between the Old and New Testaments to get to the heart of the matter: Jesus is our accessible King. He is not a faraway God, but an up-close Redeemer who draws near to us. Hebrews helps women make the connection between God the Father and God the Son and reminds us that Jesus is supreme, but He is also compassionate, empathetic, and loving to no end. Lisa Harper makes digging into Hebrews fun and doable, as only she can, without losing an ounce of depth." For more information or to sign up please contact Kathleen @ 602-741-3429 cell (call or text) or email kharris@deserthills.org
Join us for a verse by verse expository Bible study of 1 Corinthians. Beginning January 24 Mondays at 10:00 AM on Zoom
1 Corinthians challenges believers to examine every aspect of their lives through the lens of the Gospel. First Corinthians begins by addressing the people of God as those who are "sanctified by Christ Jesus, called to be saints" or "holy ones" (1Cor. 1:2) And yet, in his absence and in the presence of a corrupt culture many problems developed in the church which Paul felt compelled to address. In his letter, he shows how wide-reaching the Gospel is in its applicability to every area of life and how, as Christians, we can live to glorify God in our home, church and community relationships. For more information or to sign up please contact Cathy Hoxie at choxie512@gmail.com or call 510-207-1544. page 11
