General Notes The score is in C Double Bass sounds an octave lower than written. (also harmonics) Accidentals carry through the bar for octave specific pitches only, and are sometimes given again for clarity. All quarter tone notation is not meant to be precise and are used for color changes to make a pitch darker or brighter. Trills are always played a half step above unless indicated otherwise. Dashed slurs or arrow indicates a gradual change from one indication to the next. From niente - to niente Fermatas - short, medium, long Arrow notehead - play any pitch pitch very high or low

The five movements are not meant to be played attacca. Most techniques are explained in the parts and the performers are encouraged to interpret them to fit their own unique instrument and individual technique. In general the piece should have an improvisatory character, allowing the extended techniques to sound as natural as possible.

Alto Flute/Bass Clarinet All of the notations are sometimes explained again in the part for clarity since there are often some slight variations. Flz. = Fluttertongue Whistle Tone - the pitch is always meant to be unstable and fragile. Aeolian/air sound - the default is always more air than pitch but is often explained in the part. (A.fl.) Air with mouth as a resonator. Completely cover embouchure with mouth and roll tongue with no air blown through flute. Actual pitch sounds lower than indicated. Lip pizz. - softer than tongue ram Tongue Ram - force air by saying "Hut". Pitch should sound a major 7th lower. Air sound - mostly air with little pitch, but always explained in the part. Slap tongue (bcl.) - percussive short pitched attack by creating suction with tongue on mouthpiece and forcefully pulling away. "Scream" or "Growl" is used as a color to add more density to a pitch. These are voiced through the clarinet at the same time as the pitch is played. Unless indicated all spectral harmonics are left up to the performer. The fundamental pitch is always given.


Brass Mutes are indicated in the score - Harmon/Wha, Plunger, Cup Flz. = Fluttertongue

"trill" is with hand fast motion between open and closed on harmon mute. There is no trill between 1/2 step pitches.

Air sound with no ledger lines - air only and always explained in the part. Air sound can also be notated as just a stem with no notehead, usually for a short pickup note.

Tongue Rams - force tongue rapidly into the air stream for a short percussive pitched air sound.

Percussion Instruments

Bass drum, 5 octave Marimba, Crotales, Almglocken C4 and Eb4, Spring Coil suspended, China Cymbal (med/large) Mallets Soft/hard bass drum mallets, deck scrub brush, "hot rods", Vic Firth Dread Locks, hard xylophone mallets with thin rattan shafts for stick glissing, hard/soft marimba mallets, bow All instruments, mallets and techniques are explained in the part. The bass drum is often used a resonator for the smaller instruments. The drum should be tuned to a low pitch that enhances the resonance of the smaller instruments. A head with a rougher surface will help the "grip" of the friction sounds and will also help amplify the hand techniques. There are many improvisatory moments in the percussion part and the player should feel free to react in these moments.


Piano All of the notations are sometimes explained again in the part for clarity since there are often some slight variations. The pianist may choose to use a light towel to muffle the low strings for the 1st movement and use blu tac for the last movement. Stopped notes with fingertips on strings. All of these stopped notes are played in the small areas before the first metal bar, closest to the player. It is intended to be played mostly from the normal seating position, as to make any changes to normal playing more convenient.

Strings All of the notations are sometimes explained again in the part for clarity since there are often some slight variations. ST - sul tasto MST - molto sul tasto PP - poco pont SP - sul pont MSP - molto sul pont. CLB - col legno battuto Bow pressure, completely obscure pitch

Vertical bowing - while lightly muffling strings, move bow rapidly up and down (vertical) between tasto and pont positions for a pitchless air tremolo.

Circular bowing - while lightly muffling strings, move bow between tasto and pont positions in a circular motion, causing a filtering effect of some noise with harmonics squeeking out.
