Message from Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard April 13, 2017 Dear Friends: It is my pleasure to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science’s (CDU) 5th Annual Legacy Leaders Spring Gala.

Since its inception, CDU has worked relentlessly to fulfill its mission of addressing inadequate access to healthcare in underserved populations, especially those in South Los Angeles. I commend the CDU team for their steadfast commitment to training new generations of health professionals and reducing local health disparities. The Legacy Leaders Gala commemorates and honors those who have supported CDU throughout its history and have helped advance its mission.

I join you all in recognizing and congratulating tonight’s honorees: The heirs of Dr. Charles R. Drew; the Honorable Mark Ridley-Thomas, Chairman of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Second District; and Wilbert C. Jordan, MD, Founder and Director, OASIS Clinic. April 13, 2017 Dear Friends, I extend my congratulations to Charles Drew University on the occasion of its 5th Annual Legacy Leaders Spring Gala: Honoring Legends, Championing Our Mission.

Now celebrating over a half century of service, Charles Drew University was founded in 1966 to address the absence of adequate medical facilities in the Watts-Willowbrook neighborhood of South Los Angeles. Drew University works to educate a diverse group of health professionals to provide care with excellence and compassion. As part of its mission, the university seeks to instill its graduates with a devotion to social justice and a commitment to promoting the wellness of underserved populations. Since its founding, CDU has graduated more than 600 medical doctors, 2,500 post-graduate physicians, more than 2,000 physician assistants and hundreds of other health professionals.

In addition, I want to congratulate the honorees being recognized at this year’s Legacy Leaders gala, both of whom have played crucial roles in provision of healthcare to communities in need:  Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas  Dr. Wilbert Jordan I have the utmost respect for the work these two men have done to serve the people of South L.A. You have my very best wishes on a memorable event!
