Los caminos del silencio Silent Tracks Los desiertos fascinan por sus soledades, sus formas simples y por c贸mo el sol juega, a lo largo de las horas, cambiando las tonalidades de las dunas y las formaciones rocosas. Un recorrido por el sector marroqu铆 del desierto del Sahara, las dunas rojas de Wadi Rum, en Jordania; y la aridez de Atacama, en Chile.

Deserts fascinate us with their solitude, simple shapes and the way in which the sun plays, through the endless hours, changing the tones of the dunes and the rocky formations. A tour through the Moroccan part of the Sahara desert, the red dunes of Wadi Rum, in Jordan; and dryness of the Atacama, in Chile.

hmed deja de tocar la guitarra y, en un castellano básico y señalando a su oreja, me pide que preste atención. “No oigo nada”, digo. “No es cierto. Estás escuchando al desierto”, replica.

Estamos en un oasis cercano a Merzouga, en el extremo sureste de Marruecos, cerca de la frontera con Argelia. En un par de horas ya será de noche, y el cielo quedará salpicado por un tapizado de estrellas como nunca antes había visto. Mientras tanto, el sol va cayendo en el mar de dunas, y el desierto del Sahara sigue adelante en su juego de espejismos de colores.

Es que este desierto, todos los desiertos en realidad, engañan. Uno cree que el Sahara es pura duna, pero en verdad, el 75% son rocas y gravas. Se piensa que todo es un tapiz amarillo, pero conforme van pasando las horas, el

hmed stops playing his guitar and, in basic Spanish pointing to his ear, he asks me to pay attention. “I can’t hear anything”, I say.

“Not true. You’re listening to the desert”, he replies.

We’re in an oasis close to Merzouga, in the far south-east of Morocco, close to the Algerian border. In a couple of hours, it will be nightfall. The sky is dotted by a carpet of stars, in a way I have never before seen. At the same time, the sun is going down across the sea of dunes, and the Sahara desert keeps playing its game of colourful mirages.

This desert, in fact all deserts, play games with people’s minds. Most people believe that the Sahara is all dunes, but really, 75% is rocks and gravel. We think of it as a yelLo m+s Barcelona · 97

sol juega con nuestros ojos y las dunas van pasando del rojo del amanecer a un amarillo suave, para que al atardecer las tonalidades se conviertan en naranja y luego, si no es por alguna compasiva luna llena, todo es de un negro absoluto.

La gente como Ahmed no engaña, al contrario, son de una honestidad frontal. Pero al conocerlos se derrumban los tópicos sobre los bereber, la etnia a la que pertenece el 60% de Marruecos. Aunque estén en las puertas del desierto, y parecieran aislados del mundo, todos hablan tres o cuatro lenguas (francés, árabe, bereber y unas buenas dosis de inglés, francés e italiano gracias al turismo), son navegantes habituales de Internet, viven pegados al móvil –cuando hay señal– , y tienen un 98 · Lo m+s Barcelona

People like Ahmed don’t lie, quite the opposite, they have a frank honesty. But on getting to know them, everything you think you know about the Berbers proves to be nothing but a stereotype. Although they are at the gateway to the desert, and they seem isolated from the rest of the world, each speaks three or four languages (French, Arabic, Berber and some English, French and Italian, thanks to tourism). They are avid internet surfers, they are glued to their mobiles –when they have

Ellos se presentan como Imazighen, que en su lengua significa “hombres libres”, el sello de identidad de una cultura que durante milenios han transitado los caminos abiertos de los desiertos a bordo de sus dromedarios.

Y otro mito que cae: en el desierto llueve.

En Merzouga no sucedió, pero cuando pasa, dice Ahmed, se arman pequeñas lagunas y costras de tierra que tardan un buen tiempo en desaparecer.

Donde sí me tocó la lluvia en un desierto fue en Wadi Rum, el desierto de arenas rojas que se despliega al sur de Jordania. Justo había subido a una inmensa duna para contem-

They introduce themselves as Imazighen, which in their language means “free men”, the stamp of identity of a culture that during millennia has moved back and forth across the desert mounted on camels.

Another myth that falls short: it rains in the desert. In Merzouga, it never happened, but when it does, says Ahmed, small lakes open up and the crusty soil soon disappears.

When I did see the rain grace the desert, it was in Wadi Rum, the red sandy desert that stretches out in the south of Jordan. I had just climbed an immense dune to contemplate the landscape of canyons, gigantic Lo m+s Barcelona · 99

Este desierto desde centurias ha sido transitado por beduinos de la etnia Zalabia, ahora también reconvertidos en guías de turismo. A bordo de 4 x 4, llevan a los visitantes a conocer las caprichosas formaciones rocosas como el famoso Pilar de la Sabiduría, una montaña de 1.700 metros de altura rodeada de la llanura más plana.

El nombre viene, lógicamente, de la obra del escritor, militar y espía T.E. Lawrence, o sea, Lawrence de Arabia, cuyo nombre bautizó manantiales y puntos ahora turísticos. Este inglés usó a Wadi Rum como base para agitar a las tribus árabes contra el Imperio Otomano 100 · Lo m+s Barcelona

islands of red and flat surfaces when the furious rain forced us to look for a place to hide in, a haima where souvenirs were being sold.

This desert has for centuries been crisscrossed by ethnic Zalabian Bedouins. Now they act as guides for tourists. Carried aboard 4 x 4s, visitors get to know the whimsical formations of the rocky outcrops, such as the famous Pillar of Wisdom, a mountain of some 1,700 metres surrounded by a much flatter plain.

The name comes, naturally, from the work of the writer, soldier and spy T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, who christened many springs and now tourist hotspots. This Englishman used Wadi Rum as a base from which to gather support among the Arab tribes against the Ottomans in the

en la Primera Guerra Mundial, y lógicamente, la mítica película de David Lean fue filmada en estos parajes. Y hace 20 años también Wadi Rum se disfrazó de Marte para el filme Planeta Rojo. El nombre, claro, no ha sido de lo más creativo.

Por suerte, Wadi Rum fue declarada como Patrimonio de la Humanidad; y esto le ayuda a proteger su medio ambiente. En el Sahara marroquí, lamentablemente, los listillos que saltan las dunas con 4 x 4 y motos de alta cilindrada están degradando el lugar a gran velocidad. Porque éste es el último truco del desierto: uno cree que estas gigantescas extensiones son inmunes a todo, pero los hombres que lo transitaron desde hace siglos saben que los desiertos son un delicado ecosistema que debe ser preservado.

First World War. So where else would the legendary film by David Lean be shot? And 20 years ago, Wadi Rum was also used as Mars for the film Red Planet. The title wasn´t the most imaginative.

Luckily, Wadi Rum was declared a World Heritage site; and this has helped it to be protected. In the Moroccan Sahara, unfortunately, the thrillseekers who ride across the dunes in their 4 x 4s and powerful motorbikes are quickly deteriorating the place.

And this is the last trick the deserts have for us: we think that these expansive giants are immune to everything, but the men who travelled through them for centuries knew that they have a delicate ecosystem which must be preserved.

los chilenos les gusta destacar que en la loca geografía de su país se encuentran la región más lluviosa (la Selva de Valdivia) y la más árida del planeta.

Esta última es el Desierto de Atacama, al norte de Chile, donde pueden pasar hasta cuatro años sin que caiga una gota de lluvia.

La región, de arenales y grandes formaciones rocosas, tuvo su época de oro con la explotación del salitre, lo cual quedan de testigos varios pueblos fantasmas, y además de sus paisajes, el lugar es una meca para los amantes de los deportes de aventura.

he Chileans like to tell you about the crazy geography of their country, how it is located in both the rainiest region (the Valdivia Rainforest) and the most arid region on the planet.

The latter is the Atacama Desert, in the north of Chile, where four years can go by with not even a drop of rain. The region, with its sands and large rocky formations, had its golden age with the mining of saltpetre. This has left its mark with various ghost towns, and beyond its scenery, the place is a mecca for adventure sports enthusiasts.
