Community Investment Report Fiscal Year 2013
For children diagnosed with serious illness and their families, every moment is precious. At CCA, our goal is to transform as many of those moments as possible — with joy.

CCA has been a labor of love for nearly two decades. I encourage you to share any suggestions, comments, or ideas — I want to hear them all.
Know that we are singlemindely dedicated to providing kids with the most powerful joy experience in the world. Please feel free to email me at REllis@JoyRx.org, give me a call at (503) 244-3141, or find me on Facebook/Regina Ellis.
FOUNDER’S LETTER: What Joy Looks Like
When the Children’s Cancer Association began eighteen years ago, we didn’t have an office — we had a kitchen table. We also had a powerful mission: deliver joy to kids and teens facing serious illness, like no one else had.
This last year, our grassroots organization amplified JoyRx across the national stage. In collaboration with powerful brands like Converse, cornerstone/The FADER, Sol Republic, Pandora, and Atlantic Records, we’ve teamed up with artists like the Flaming Lips and the Lumineers. These amazing bands shared exclusive song presecriptions with our MyMusicRx members. On any given day, sick kids can go to MyMusicRx.org to explore, play, listen, and transform a moment with music medicine.
We’ve continued to fuel JoyRx through our investment in a powerful combination of innovation, strategic collaborations, and focused growth. It’s an approach that has resulted in some pretty amazing accomplishments in 2013:
• Expanded program service interactions 12% to children and families in 32 states
• Ensured every program and service remained FREE to children, families, and hospital partners
• Inspired 18.3% revenue growth to fuel mission impact
• Earned third consecutive 4-star Charity Navigator rating, ranking CCA among top 10% of nonprofits in the nation for excellence in financial stewardship, transparency, and accountability
• Delivered JoyRx message digitally over 30M times via social, online, and print media
I am pleased to present our fiscal year report on our mission impact and philanthropic support.
When I look at the extraordinary kids featured in these stories, I think — this is what joy looks like And I’m reminded of why we gathered around my kitchen table in the first place.
Please enjoy this glimpse into the power of JoyRx — we couldn’t have gotten this far without you.
In joy,

Regina Ellis Founder and CEO, Children’s Cancer Association

Sounds of Joy
Jenny comes across as a quiet, shy little girl. And then she starts to sing. From Justin Bieber to One Direction to a rousing rendition of “Old MacDonald,” Jenny rocks them all on vocals, ukulele and piano. (Her sisters usually back her up on drums.)
All this joyful noise was made possible by CCA’s MusicRx Specialsts, who started working with Jenny two years ago when she was diagnosed with leukemia. According to her mother, Ana, these musical moments have made a huge difference in Jenny’s life,
“Before MusicRx, she would just lie in the hospital bed feeling bored and unhappy. But now when the music specialist comes in, she brightens right up. It makes her feel calmer and gives her something to look forward to.”
Besides making music, Jenny loves animals and says she wants to be a “pet doctor” when she grows up. She even credits MusicRx with giving her a jumpstart on her career. “Thanks to ‘Old MacDonald,’ I already know how to talk to the animals!” she laughed.
MusicRx®
Jenny is one of the 2,382 Oregon and Southwest Washington children who have requested bedside music medicine visits last year. Trained MusicRx Specialists bring state-of-the-art mobile carts loaded with instruments and interactive technology to lend, providing tailored music experiences in every unit of the children’s hospitals we serve.
Total in-hospital service interactions counted 11,320. In additon, volunteer musicians filled hospital hallways and lobbies with 152 hours of soothing, acoustic music.
The scientifically proven benefits of music medicine help pediatric patients manage pain, boost immunity, create calm, ease tension, and decrease emotional stress. CCA is a music medicine pioneer using music to heal.
You don’t know you’re beautiful That’s what makes you beautiful — One Direction

Sapphire’s family has been served by CCA’s Chemo Pal Mentor Program, MusicRx, and Link. She was named one of CCA’s 2013 Community Heroes.

Music is My Meds
When Aidan first heard the knock on his hospital room door, he thought it was the nurse delivering pain meds. Turns out, it was CCA’s MyMusicRx Team visiting — with a way to make Aidan feel better with music.
MyMusicRx.org lets Aidan play and download free music games, explore digital instruments, record original music, and watch exclusive video greetings from popular musicians.
“I
can’t do a lot physically right now because of my rare autoimmune disease, so I spend hours on MyMusicRx. It really brightens my day.”
Which is music to our ears.
MyMusicRx.org
Aidan is a member in the MyMusicRx community, the only digital music experience of its kind, which celebrated a 209% increase in membership in the past year. The most connected and relevant music medicine experience available today for sick kids and teens, MyMusicRx.org delivers the healing power of music across the country and in Canada. MyMusicRx is invited to music festivals across the nation like SXSW, CMJ, Coachella, Bonnaroo, and MusicFestNW, where artists share their love of music with MyMusicRx.

A Real-life Fairy Tale
Joy has a way of turning up in the most unexpected places. For Amanda, it was at the Molalla Buckaroo Rodeo. He was a country boy named Ethan, and it was love at first sight.
When the staggering cost of Amanda’s Cystic Fibrosis treatments cut into their wedding plans, her social worker asked CCA, “Would you buy Amanda’s wedding dress?” The answer, of course, was yes.
“It made my wedding day perfect. I love that dress!”
In fact, she loves it so much, she plans to wear it fly fishing on the Metolius River with Ethan for their one-year anniversary.
“CCA brings joy back into the lives of people who are going through a really hard time.” — Amanda, 20 years old Link
Amanda is one of 815 Pacific Northwest family members CCA’s Link program brought the joy of essential resources, special memories, and tailored support to last year. In FY13, Link’s community network of 385 volunteers invested 1,155 in-kind hours, providing 1,360 service interactions to children, teens, and families.

A Beautiful Friendship
Lexi’s world is full of appointments and procedures to treat her leukemia. But it’s also full of bubbles and ponies, baby dolls and princess dresses. Most importantly, it’s filled with joy.
That’s thanks in part to Lexi’s Chemo Pal Mentor, Collette, who’s made it her mission to bring comfort and laughter to this fairy sprite of a girl. Besides bringing bags of toys, Collette brings special insight to their friendship — two years ago, she battled breast cancer.
“My support system throughout the process was unbelievable,” she explained. “But I knew others aren’t always so lucky. So this is how I chose to give back.”
Lexi’s
mom, Amanda, says, “The
best part of having a Chemo Pal in our lives is the happiness it brings Lexi. On tough days, we can always count on Collette to be there with a hug and a smile.”
After all, that’s what friends are for.
Chemo Pal® Mentor Program
Lexi is one of 255 Pacific Northwest children and teens that CCA’s Chemo Pal Mentor Program brought the joy of friendship to last year. Trained Chemo Pal Mentors devoted 7,436 hours forging and strengthening friendships and family bonds, bringing diversion, fun, and activities to kids during their treatment.
In 2013, Oregon Mentors awarded CCA’s Chemo Pal Mentor Program with their most prestigious award for mentoring excellence, recognizing the program for exceeding standards of excellence and quality.

Alexandra Ellis Caring Cabin
More than 40 family members like Ryland’s visit CCA’s luxurious Caring Cabin hideaway in a typical month. This free adventure helps restore the energy and hope kids need to battle their illness over the long haul. CCA understands that play can sometimes be the thing that’s needed most. The health benefits of nature are scientifically proven to decrease anxiety, stress, and depression, and have been noted to boost the immune system to fight cancer. For pediatric patients, the Caring Cabin, nestled in 24 acres of surrounding woods with plentiful wildlife and a serene lake, provides an essential health connection with nature and healing.

Adventure of a Lifetime
Ryland spent more than 130 nights in the hospital while he underwent chemotherapy the first time. His mom, Jenn, camped out beside his bed, while his dad, Cam, stayed home to care for their other two sons. “We did our best to keep the family together, but it was a grueling routine,” said Cam. “The boys really missed seeing their brother.”
Ryland relapsed in the fall of 2012, sending his family again into a state of separation and anxiety.
What the Lamperts desperately needed was a way to reconnect — and that’s exactly what the Caring Cabin gave them. The family spent four days at this woodland retreat playing games, eating S’mores, and fishing on the pond for hours on end.
“The Caring Cabin allowed our family to temporarily leave behind all the stuff that comes with fighting cancer day in and day out,” said Jenn. “We didn’t even realize how much we needed it until we got here.”
“I didn’t catch anything, but I don’t care — it was so much fun!”
— Ryland, six years old

Community Events Spotlight
Supporters of CCA come together in so many creative ways to raise funds and awareness that allow CCA to prescribe JoyRx to seriously ill children, teens, and their families when they need more than medicine. Every year, nearly 100 events fuel our programs. Here are a few highlights.

GET INVOLVED. BE INSPIRED.
Our 1,000+ strong volunteer corps, has the power to change the lives of those in need. But very often, our volunteers find it’s actually their lives that are changed by the extraordinary spirit of the courageous kids and families CCA serves.
“Volunteers do not necessarily have more time than others; we have found they simply have more heart.”
Volunteers of all ages help to power every aspect of our organization from directly supporting seriously ill children to creating new program innovations, and spreading joy throughout the community. They are our heart and soul, fueling CCA’s innovative programs that deliver JoyRx.
Become a mentor to a child or teen going through treatment in Oregon or SW Washington....Provide your musical talent....Share your favorite song and prescribe joy to kids across the nation....Organize a group to help with landscaping or maintenance at the Caring Cabin.... Gather your school mates, family, and/or friends to create a fundraiser or deliver hope to a family during the holidays....Lend a hand to support our many events... Individuals, families, and corporate or school groups can learn more about volunteer opportunities at volunteer@JoyRx.org.

JoyRx
Without the selfless dedication of our community volunteers, the important work of CCA would not be possible. FY13 volunteers donated 12,256 hours of time to CCA, that’s an in-kind value of $271,348.
To see a list of our 1,093 amazing volunteers, and to learn how to get involved, please visit our website, JoyRx.org.
The Children’s Cancer Association is an equal opportunity employer. We use a similar approach for volunteers, therefore, people of every race, religion, sex or national origin are encouraged to apply to volunteer.
Children’s Cancer Association believes: We believe kids deserve long, wonderful lives. Or, at the very least, short, wonderful lives. We believe cancer sucks. We’ve had it, or loved someone who did. We prescribe moments of joy for kids who are in the fight against all serious illness. We create lasting memories for the loved ones who stand beside them. We believe joy grows exponentially when it’s used collectively. We are surrounded by a league of extraordinary heroes who perform amazing feats of compassion, generosity, and love every day. We believe in the healing power of music. We are music-as-medicine pioneers and champions. We believe in purple. We know joy comes in all colors, shapes, and sizes – just like the kids who need our help. We love to laugh. We are not afraid to cry. We spend every dollar wisely. We give hugs freely. We believe in today. We respect our history as a grassroots organization.
We embrace our destiny as a global source of JoyRx. We believe these things matter. 1200 NW Naito Parkway, Suite 140, Portland, OR 97209 | (503) 244-3141 | Office@JoyRx.org | JoyRx.org
