Lilac Garden (Jardin aux Lilas) Originally titled Jardin aux Lilas, and created in 1936, Antony Tudor’s Lilac Garden was a departure from the idealized settings common in ballet at the time, focusing instead on real human experience. The backdrop of an evening garden party in Edwardian England centers on a love triangle between the hostess, Caroline, her lover, and “The Man She Must Marry.” Rigid societal norms dictate behavior, forcing private feelings to remain carefully hidden. Caroline’s brief encounters with her true love are further complicated by the presence of “An Episode in His Past,” a glamorous former mistress of her fiancé. With Ernest Chausson’s seamlessly paired score, Tudor’s restrained yet expressive choreography shapes every subtle gesture and nuanced movement with deliberate intent, painting a portrait of the tension between duty and desire. The Sarasota Ballet’s 2026 performances of Antony Tudor’s Lilac Garden are in celebration of the 90th anniversary of the ballet’s premiere, which occurred on January 26, 1936 at the Mercury Theatre in London by Ballet Rambert.
Ashton Divertissements This selection of Ashton divertissements showcase just a snapshot of the remarkable range, musicality, wit, choreographic genius. These performances are also performed as a part of the Ashton Worldwide Festival, which in June of 2024 The Sarasota Ballet and The Royal Ballet officially opened with their joint programs entitled Ashton Celebrated and performed at The Royal Opera House. Meditation from Thaïs Ashton’s Meditation from Thaïs transforms extraordinary emotion into remarkable simplicity. The piece was created in only two rehearsals for a gala performance, originally intended as a one-time performance. Virtuosity is never the focus of the choreography; instead, weightless lifts, sculptural lines, and unhurried partnering seem to breathe directly with the music. The dancers move with an unspoken understanding, shaping a dreamlike reflection on love, memory, and loss. Pas de Trois from Les Rendezvous A prime representation of Ashton’s early choreographic style is the youthful brightness of Les Rendezvous’ pas de trois. As Ashton’s first major ballet for the Vic-Wells Ballet, the work is set in a sunlit park, where a group of friends meet and socialize. The pas de trois reveals an animated conversation between three friends, its quick exchanges and shifting formations capturing both youthful exuberance and refined elegance. Awakening Pas de Deux from The Sleeping Beauty Act II Choreographed in 1968 by Sir Frederick Ashton for Sir Peter Wrights new production of The Sleeping Beauty for The Royal Ballet, the Awakening Pas de Deux is set to Tchaikovsky’s entr’acte music which had been originally discarded by Marius Petipa. Originally danced by Dame Antoinette Sibley and Sir Anthony Dowell, the pas de deux shares a lyrical character with the Nocturne from Ashton’s The Dream, also created for the celebrated pair. Pas de Cinq from Illuminations Highlighting a more introspective side of Ashton’s artistry is Illuminations. Created to Benjamin Britten’s song cycle Les Illuminations and inspired by the poetry of Arthur Rimbaud, this celebrated excerpt—often referred to as the “Sacred Love” Pas de Cinq—is set to the movement Being Beauteous, Rimbaud’s visionary poem of the same name. While Ashton spent the majority of his legendary career with The Royal Ballet, this rare work for New York City Ballet stands apart for its literary inspiration and symbolic style. Balcony Pas de Deux from Romeo and Juliet Choreographed in May 1955 for the Royal Danish Ballet, Sir Frederick Ashton’s Romeo and Juliet is the only version of the beloved tragedy created before the original Soviet ballet was performed outside of the Iron Curtain, making the ballet structurally and artistically the most unique and different production of the ballet. Focusing on the drama of two lovers caught in an all-consuming passion, the ballet’s tender moments contrast beautifully with its sweeping, dramatic sequences, highlighting the complexity of love. Summertide First created in the late 1970s for The Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet, this abstract ballet captures the spirit of Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Its three movements unfold like a summer’s day—from the freshness of morning, through the warmth of afternoon, to the brilliance of night. Long thought lost, Summertide was revived through the fortunate discovery by Doug Nicholson of an undiscovered film of the ballet. With this, Assistant Director Margaret Barbieri – whom Summertide was created on – worked in collaboration with Wright to re-create the work. Mendelssohn’s rhapsodic score creates the perfect foundation for Summertide to glow with Wright’s musicality and elegance, and its revival not only honored one of Britain’s great ballet masters, but also restored a luminous gem to the stage. The Sarasota Ballet’s performances this Season of Summertide are in celebration of Choreographer Sir Peter Wright’s 100th Birthday on November 25th, 2026.
ABOUT THE SARASOTA BALLET THE SARASOTA BALLET’S rapid rise in national and international recognition is driven by the strength, expertise, and vast experience of its leadership. From their ties with many of today’s greatest choreographers to their direct experiences working with and performing with many of the icons of 20th Century classical ballet, Director Iain Webb, Executive Director Joseph Volpe, and Assistant Director Margaret Barbieri bring powerful resumes to the Company and a shared vision of excellence on and off the stage. This combined powerhouse trio has continued to advance The Sarasota Ballet’s 30+ year mission of enriching lives, captivating emotions, and strengthening its community through the art of dance – and with Director Iain Webb’s recent 10-year contract extension by the Board of Trustees, that mission will continue in Sarasota for the foreseeable future. In June of 2024, The Sarasota Ballet embarked on its first international residency in London at the Royal Opera House after accepting an invitation from Kevin O’Hare, Director of The Royal Ballet. Throughout Webb’s tenure, the Company has toured extensively across the United States, with highlights including two engagements at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., appearances at New York City Center, three engagements at the Joyce Theater in New York – most recently in August of 2022 – and participation in Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in 2015 and 2025. The Sarasota Ballet’s expansive repertoire provides both audiences and its dancers a rich and varied look at the art form through some of the great choreographers of the 20th and 21st Century including Sir Frederick Ashton, George Balanchine, Sir David Bintley, Sir Matthew Bourne, Dame Ninette de Valois, Johan Kobborg, Jessica Lang, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Paul Taylor, Twyla Tharp, Christopher Wheeldon, and Sir Peter Wright.
WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY Directors IAIN WEBB (Director) danced for 18 years with both the Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet and The Royal Ballet. His leading roles included Ashton’s The Dream, The Two Pigeons, La Fille mal gardée, Cinderella; Bintley’s The Snow Queen; Fokine’s Les Sylphides, Petrushka; Balanchine’s Prodigal Son. Retiring from the stage in 1996, Webb took on the role of Rehearsal Director for Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake and Cinderella, and later Assistant Director for Tetsuya Kumakawa’s K-Ballet. In 2007, Webb became Director of The Sarasota Ballet, introducing over 180 ballets into the Company’s repertoire, and following their 2014 Sir Frederick Ashton Festival, garnered national and international acclaim. JOSEPH VOLPE (Executive Director), spent 42 years working at The Metropolitan Opera rising from apprentice carpenter to General Manager. He conceived ‘Met Titles’, the multilingual operatic translations onto the backs of theatre seats and initiated the development of Tessitura—a customer relation management software, which is now licensed to more than 200 companies worldwide. Volpe is the author of The Toughest Show on Earth, My Rise and Reign at The Metropolitan Opera, consulted for Ron Howard’s 2019 documentary Pavarotti, and has lectured at numerous universities including Oxford. In 2016, he became Executive Director of The Sarasota Ballet.
MARGARET BARBIERI (Assistant Director) danced for 25 years with The Royal Ballet companies, performing most of the leading roles in the classical repertoire. She worked closely with Ashton, Cranko, de Valois, MacMillan, Hynd, Massine, Tudor, van Manen, and Wright. After retiring, she became Director of the Classical Graduate Program at London Studio Centre. In 2012, Barbieri joined The Sarasota Ballet as Assistant Director. Her stagings include Ashton’s The Two Pigeons, Façade, Birthday Offering, Les Patineurs, Les Rendezvous, La Fille mal gardée, and Jazz Calendar; de Valois’ The Rake’s Progress, Checkmate; Cranko’s Pineapple Poll; Wheeldon’s There Where She Loved, The American; Fokine’s Les Sylphides, Petrushka; and Wright’s Giselle, Summertide.

SIR FREDERICK ASHTON (1904-1988) (Ashton Divertissements) was born in Ecuador and resolved to dance after seeing Anna Pavlova perform in Lima in 1917. In London, he studied with Léonide Massine and later with Dame Marie Rambert, who encouraged his first choreographic ventures, including A Tragedy of Fashion (1926). After dancing briefly with Ida Rubinstein’s company, he accepted Dame Ninette de Valois’ invitation in 1935 to join her Vic-Wells Ballet as both dancer and choreographer, beginning a lifelong association with what would become The Royal Ballet. His career extended beyond the company to opera, film, revues, and international commissions, but it was at Covent Garden, after wartime service in the RAF, that he created Symphonic Variations (1946), affirming a new postwar spirit. Over the following decades he choreographed ballets often tailored to individual dancers, among them Cinderella (1948), Daphnis and Chloe (1951), Romeo and Juliet (1955), Ondine (1958), La Fille mal gardée (1960), The Two Pigeons (1961), Marguerite and Armand (1963), and The Dream (1964). Ashton was appointed Associate Director of The Royal Ballet in 1952 and succeeded de Valois as Director from 1963 to 1970, during which time he also created works such as Monotones II (1965), Enigma Variations (1968), A Month in the Country (1976), and the film The Tales of Beatrix Potter (1971), in which he performed as Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle. Knighted in 1962 and later named Founder Choreographer of The Royal Ballet, Ashton left a body of work distinguished by versatility, musical sensitivity, and theatrical imagination. SIR PETER WRIGHT (Summertide) made his debut as a professional dancer with the Ballets Jooss during World War II, and in the 1950s worked with several dance companies, including the Sadler’s Wells Theatre Ballet, for which he created his first ballet, A Blue Rose, in 1957. In 1959 he was appointed Ballet Master to the Sadler’s Wells Opera and teacher at The Royal Ballet School. In 1961, he went to Stuttgart as teacher and Ballet Master to the company being formed by John Cranko. There, he choreographed several ballets, including The Mirror Walkers, Namouna, Designs for Dancers, and Quintet, and mounted his first production of Giselle, which he subsequently produced for The Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, and many other international companies. His interpretations of the classics include The Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia, Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker, and these productions are now featured regularly in opera houses throughout the world. During the 1960s, he also established himself as a successful director of television ballets and choreographed various West End musicals and revues.
In 1969, he returned to The Royal Ballet as Associate to the Directors and then became Associate Director. In 1977, he was appointed Director of Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet, taking the Company to Birmingham in 1990, when it became Birmingham Royal Ballet. On his retirement in July 1995 he was made Director Laureate of Birmingham Royal Ballet. He received the Evening Standard Award for Ballet in 1981, and in 1985, was made a CBE. In 1990, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from London University, the University of Birmingham conferred on him the title of Special Professor Performance Studies, and he was presented with the Elizabeth II Coronation Award from the Royal Academy of Dance. In 1991, he was made a Fellow of the Birmingham Conservatoire of Music. He also won the 1991 Digital Premier Award, which he used to commission a new ballet for the Company. He was awarded a knighthood in the 1993 Queen’s Birthday Honours List, in 1994 an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Birmingham and the Critics’ Circle Award 1995 for Distinguished Services to the Arts. He is president of the Benesh Institute (Dance Notation) and the Friends of Sadler’s Wells Theatre, and a Vice President of The Royal Academy of Dance and the Myasthenia Gravis Association. He is currently a Governor of The Royal Ballet School. ANTONY TUDOR (Lilac Garden) It took Marie Rambert’s instinct for talent to recognize the potential in 19-year-old William Cook (born 1908 in London), then an invoice clerk at Smithfield Market. Stagestruck and determined, he came to her Ballet Club for lessons after work, becoming her stage manager, pianist, and assistant. Adopting the name Antony Tudor, he soon emerged as Sir Frederick Ashton’s chief British choreographic rival of the 1930s. Tudor’s debut, CrossGarter’d (1931), drew praise from Léonide Massine and was followed by Lysistrata, Adam and Eve (1932), The Planets (1934), the acclaimed Lilac Garden (1936), and Dark Elegies (1937). Witty works such as Judgment of Paris and Gala Performance (1938) displayed his range. That same year, frustrated with Rambert’s demands, he co-founded London Ballet with Andrée Howard, Agnes de Mille, and Hugh Laing, his lifelong partner. In 1939, Tudor accepted Lucia Chase’s invitation to Ballet Theatre in New York, beginning a long association with the company (later American Ballet Theatre). As Resident Choreographer, he restaged earlier works and created the seminal Pillar of Fire (1942). Retiring from performance in 1950, he directed the Metropolitan Opera Ballet School and taught at Juilliard and UCLA, while choreographing for New York City Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada. He briefly led the Royal Swedish Ballet (1963–64) before returning to ABT in 1974 as Associate Artistic Director, where he created late works including The Leaves Are Fading (1975). A committed Zen Buddhist, Tudor died in New York in 1987, remembered for choreography of psychological and emotional depth.
Dancers on tour KAITLYN CASEY (Principal) was born in Staten Island, NY and trained at the School of American Ballet before joining Semperoper Ballet in 2015 and Boston Ballet in 2023. Casey joined The Sarasota Ballet for the start of the 2026 – 2027 Season as a Principal. Her leading roles in previous companies include Ashton’s Cinderella, The Dream; Balanchine’s Apollo, Symphony in C; David Dawson’s Giselle, Romeo and Juliet; Forsythe’s Herman Schmerman, The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude; Nissinen’s The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake; Nureyev’s Don Quixote; Peck’s Everywhere We Go, Heatscape; Watkin’s The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake. MARIJANA DOMINIS (Principal) was born in Zagreb, Croatia and trained at Munich Ballet Academy before joining the Finnish National Ballet. Dominis joined The Sarasota Ballet in 2019 and was promoted to Soloist in 2021 and then to Principal in 2022. ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation (“The Joyce,” Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a non-profit organization, has served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, the theater was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. As one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance, The Joyce Theater has provided a performance home for over 500 U.S.-based and international dance companies. Beyond the stage, The Joyce supports dance artists through longstanding commissioning and creative residency programs and Joyce Theater Productions, helping to bring artist-driven projects to life from early development to the premiere and touring. In addition, The Joyce owns and operates the New York Center for Creativity & Dance in Manhattan’s East Village, providing affordable rehearsal and workspace for dance artists. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from The Joyce’s Dance Education Program for Schools, audiences gain insight into the creative process through Curtain Chats, and Family Matinees introduce children to dance and offer opportunities to meet the artists. The Joyce Theater’s annual season of 46 to 48 weeks of dance includes more than 300 performances featuring a broad range of dance forms, styles, and traditions for audiences of over 120,000.
