ABOUT THE PROGRAM

LOCUS TRIO (1980)

Choreography by Trisha Brown Performers: Cecily Campbell, Kimberly Fulmer, Jamie Scott Film Director: Daniel Madoff Production Stage Manager: Betsy Ayer Costume Designer: Judith Shea With movement generated from her own biography placed within the structure of a cube, Locus (1975) was the first time Trisha linked drawing as part of her imaginative practice. Locus Trio expands a single cube into a grid of twelve, four wide by three deep. Using an improvised score, three dancers slip in and out of unison allowing the movement of the solo to guide their choices as they navigate the grid. Each performance offers an ever-changing kaleidoscopic form unique unto itself. Performed at Judson Memorial Church in 2021.

WATERMOTOR (1978)

Choreography by Trisha Brown Performer: Marc Crousillat Film Director: Daniel Madoff Production Stage Manager: Betsy Ayer Costume Designer: Deanna Berg MacLean “Unpredictable, personal, dense,” this solo leaves behind the starkness of Brown's postmodern task dances and presages the rich movement phrases in the pieces that follow. As with Locus, Brown drew upon her lived experience to generate the movement, but rather than a graph of biographical information, Brown used childhood imagery to discover her physical intelligence. Performed at Judson Memorial Church in 2021.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

THE DECOY PROJECT (2021)

Choreography by Trisha Brown Conception by Carolyn Lucas and Jamie Scott Performers: Hadar Ahuvia, Raven Blue, Cecily Campbell, Kimberly Fulmer, Amanda Kmett’Pendry, Jennifer Payán, Jamie Scott, Hsiao-Jou Tang Rehearsal Directors: Cecily Campbell, Carolyn Lucas, Jamie Scott Film Director: Daniel Madoff Production Stage Manager: Betsy Ayer Inspired by the illusion of an infinite line of dancers extending beyond the proscenium in Glacial Decoy (1979), The Decoy Project is a marriage between an adaptation of the work Trisha created for WNET and the original Glacial Decoy form. This unique arrangement for video is born out of a desire to get more dancers back into the studio by extending the line of physical transmission beyond our TBDC dancers and engaging with a larger community of professional women dancers here in New York. Thank you to Lisa Kraus for transmitting this invaluable work to a new generation. Performed at Judson Memorial Church in 2021.

GEOMETRY OF QUIET (2002)

Choreography by Trisha Brown Performers: Oluwadamilare Ayorinde, Marc Crousillat, Leah Ives, Amanda Kmett’Pendry Music: Salvatore Sciarrino Flute: Sato Moughalian Costume Designer: Christophe de Menil reimagined by Elizabeth Cannon Lighting Design: Jennifer Tipton Performed at The Joyce Theater, New York City, December 13, 2017. Video Recorded by Character Generator, Inc.

Director and Editor: Mark Robison Camera Operator: Terry Hempfling Production Assistant: Holly Reidy Assistant Editor: Tom Knight Production Manager: Pat Roberts The recording of this work was made possible by the cooperation of Trisha Brown Dance Company, The Joyce Theater, and Jerome Robbins Dance Division, The New York Public Library. An encore presentation from the company’s 2017 Joyce performances, Brown’s second work to the music of Salvatore Sciarrino, Geometry of Quiet, matches the poignancy and delicacy of the music with choreography that implies a personal, emotional intimacy. Slowly engaging in solos, duets and trios, each delicate configuration is careful not to disturb the balance - revealing pieces which didn’t seem to be missing.

ABOUT TRISHA BROWN TRISHA BROWN (Founding Artistic Director and Choreographer - 1936-2017), one of the most acclaimed and influential choreographers and dancers of her time, created groundbreaking work which forever changed the landscape of art. A student of Anna Halprin, Brown participated in the choreographic composition workshops taught by Robert Dunn – from which Judson Dance Theater was born – greatly contributing to the fervent interdisciplinary creativity that defined 1960s New York. With the founding of the Trisha Brown Dance Company in 1970, Brown set off on her own distinctive path of artistic investigation and ceaseless experimentation, which extended for forty years. The creator of over 100 choreographic works, six operas, and a graphic artist, whose drawings have earned recognition in numerous museum exhibitions and collections, Brown’s earliest works took impetus from the cityscape of downtown SoHo, where she was a pioneering settler. In the 1970s, as Brown strove to invent an original abstract movement language – one of her singular achievements – it was art galleries, museums, and international exhibitions that provided her work its most important presentation context. A major turning point in Brown’s career occurred in 1979, when she transitioned from working in non-traditional and art world settings to assume the role of a choreographer working within the institutional framework associated with dancing – the proscenium stage.

ABOUT TRISHA BROWN In her lifetime, Trisha Brown was the recipient of nearly every award available to contemporary choreographers. The first woman to receive the coveted MacArthur ‘Genius’ Grant (in 1991), Brown was honored by five fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts; two John Simon Guggenheim Fellowships; and Brandeis University’s Creative Arts Medal in Dance (1982). In 1988, she was named Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the government of France. In 1999, she received the New York State Governor’s Arts Award and, in 2003, was honored with the National Medal of Arts. She has received numerous honorary doctorates, is an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and was awarded the 2011 New York Dance and Performance ‘Bessie’ Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2011, Brown received the prestigious Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize for making an “outstanding contribution to the beauty of the world and to mankind’s enjoyment and understanding of life.” Today, the Trisha Brown Dance Company continues to perpetuate Brown’s legacy through its Trisha Brown: In Plain Site initiative. Through it, the company draws on Brown’s model for reinvigorating her choreography through its re-siting in relation to new contexts that include outdoor sites, and museum settings and collections. The company is also involved in an ongoing process of reconstructing and remounting major works that Brown created for the proscenium stage between 1979 and 2011. In addition, the company continues its work to consolidate Trisha Brown’s artistic legacy through their management of her archives, which record her meticulous creative process over many decades. ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international

companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through offsite presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000 patrons. Visit Joyce.org for more information.
