ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The Mayor of Harlem seeks to reimagine the image of a groundbreaking icon and hero of his people. Bill "Bojangles" Robinson established himself on the Black Vaudeville Circuit for the entire first part of his career, and was the first to become a Black soloist in the white theater world during segregation. He has faced plenty of stigma, even from his own community, as a result of Hollywood's early casting barriers. What we continue to see is a man who made the best of circumstances; an advocate who used his earnings to look out for and improve his community; one which directly benefited from his generosity and his sacrifice. This work is created and directed with love, by Tap Dancers in celebration of National Tap Dance Day and Bill Robinson's Birthday. We embrace Bill Robinson as a symbol for equality and justice. Almost every year, Derick, Dormeshia & Jason create a brand new show for Tap Family Reunion in honor of National Tap Dance Day. The show is centered around the dynamics of taking the idea of a chorus line to the next level where the ensemble is made up of talented soloists in their own right, and the production offers plenty of opportunity to let them shine and improvise. WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY DORMESHIA (Choreographer/Performer/Artistic Director) is a two-time Bessie Award (as performer and choreographer), Princess Grace Award Statue Award, and Astaire Award recipient. Her Broadway credits include: After Midnight, Black and Blue, and Bring In Da’Noise, Bring In Da’Funk including the international tour (dance captain, principal, lead). Her film credits include, TAP with Gregory Hines, Spike Lee’s Bamboozled (Assistant Choreographer/Actress), and The Rise and Fall of Miss Thang, for which she received a nomination for Best Lead Actress. Some of Dormeshia’s choreography credits, Michael Jackson’s Rock Your World, and The Blues Project (co-choreographer). Dormeshia continues her artistic journey with the first full-length work twice named to New York Times "Best of Dance," And Still You Must Swing: a celebration of Tap dance, Jazz music, the connection between the two, and their African roots. GRANT (Choreographer/Director/Performer), a native of Boston, where he trained with his aund Andrea Herbert Major at The Roxbury Center for Performing Arts. At age eight, that training led to mentorship by tap greats Dianne Walker and Jimmy Slyde. At eighteen, he joined The Jazz Tap Ensemble, directed by Lynn Dally, where he won the Princess Grace award for outstanding young performer. He was an original member of Bring In Da’ Noise, Bring In Da’Funk, created and directed by George C. Wolfe and choreographed by Savion Glover, where he became dance captain and later the lead for the first national tour. Mr. Grant is also the creator, director, and choreographer of Imagine Tap, a show that featured the world's best tap dancers, co-creator of The Blues Project, winner of the Bessie Award (NY Dance & Performance Award) with Dormeshia, Michelle Dorrance, and Toshi Reagan, and is also a choreographer and featured performer in Dormeshia's And Still You Must Swing, featured at Jacob’s Pillow and The Joyce Theater. Her art is rooted in creating platforms to support and uplift the art of others. Offering business management, creative support, and production services to Professional Tap Dancers, choreographers and performers since 2002, she has also executive produced the Harlem Jazz Dance Festival, T.A.A.P. at Swing 46, Mr. Wiggles’ Wreck Session & Hip Hop Camp, Master Tap Workshops, Robin Dunn’s Ladies Get Down and Tap Family Reunion to name a few. Elka continues to support major productions including The Bessie Awards, the 125th & 135th Capezio Anniversaries, and the film American Tap. As a prominent concert dance and performance producer, Santana has executive produced and directed concerts and immersive events at the BAM, SummerStageNYC, The Schomburg Center, the Barclay’s Center, and music artists such as Big Daddy Kane, Thomas Piper, and more. Her previous experience as a dancer has been performing at venues such as Madison Square Garden, Carnegie Hall, The Apollo Theater, Lincoln Center, and across Europe. Born and raised in Brooklyn, she now raises her family there and advocates for the arts, and makes them as accessible as possible. AMANDA CASTRO (Ensemble), born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in New Haven, CT, is a multidisciplinary artist with her artistry rooted in rhythm with her soul in Tap. Most recently seen at The Joyce Theater in Chasing Magic by Ayodele Casel, Castro is a graduate of California Institute of the Arts, where she studied under Glen Eddy of Nederlands Dans Theatre and Andre Tyson from Ailey Company. Once a principal dancer of the renowned company Urban Bush Women, she starred in musical theatre productions such as Singing In the Rain in the role of Kathy Seldon, Jared Grimes’ 42nd Street, “atomic” performances as Anita in Glimmerglass Festival’s West Side Story (NYT ‘18) and Lyric Opera of Chicago, among others. Amanda continues to pursue the journey of deepening her practice as a rhythmic storyteller and remaining a vessel for the stories that push humanity forward. CHRISTINA CARMINUCCI (Ensemble/Dance Captain), born and raised in NJ, is an NYC-based tap dancer. In her youth, she trained locally as a multidisciplinary dancer, seeking out further instruction across the Hudson at BDC, STEPS, and TCYE. While earning her BBA in Arts and Entertainment Management at Pace University, Christina was fortunate to study extensively under the mentorship of Derick K. Grant. The 2014 Jacob’s Pillow Tap Program alumna has since been performing throughout NYC and around the world. Her proudest accomplishments thus far include appearing in works by her teachers as well as self-producing her own material, “When the Smoke Clears” (2019), and most recently, “The Solidarity Series.” Passionate about sharing her love of dance, she regularly teaches at STEPS and various workshops.
WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY MAURICE CHESTNUT (Bill “Bojangles” Robinson), a Newark, New Jersey native, began dancing at the age of five, under the direction of Mr. Alfred Gallman. He became a professional dancer at the age of nine as an original member of the New Jersey Tap Ensemble under the direction of Ms. Deborah Mitchell. As one of the taps’ brightest young stars, he was featured on The Sally Jesse Raphael Show in the “My Kid’s A Star” segment, where he proudly proclaimed that he loved to dance and would keep doing it “until I die.” He was a gold medalist in the NAACP Act-So competition and was crowned “Top Dog Performer” at The Apollo Theater. At the age of fourteen, the Newark Star-Ledger’s arts reviewers named Maurice “one of the twenty New Jersey faces to watch for in the new millennium.” In 2003, Maurice was recruited by tap master Savion Glover to join the national touring company of the Tony Award-winning Bring In ‘Da Noise, Bring In ‘Da Funk. Maurice received critical favor in that role. He has continued to work with Savion as a member of his Improvography and Bare Soundz tours, as well as performing in productions such as Classical Savion, Tappin’ Into Monk, Invitation To The Dancer, and on ABC-TV’s Dancing With The Stars. OffBroadway credits include Shades of Harlem, The Wiz, Bubbling Brown Sugar directed by George Faison at Atlanta’s Fox Theater, and Can I Hit That, and in 2011, he was one of the performers in the movie Happy Feet 2. In addition to performing with his own band, he is often invited to perform or tour as a special guest with such prominent jazz musicians as Christian McBride, Cyrus Chestnut, and Thelonius Monk III. DESTINY DELANCY (Understudy) is born and raised in Miami, FL, and is currently residing in New York City. She is studying at NYU, Tisch School of the Arts with a concentration in Dance. She is an Alum of The School at Jacob's Pillow Tap Program. And has performed in various venues all over Miami and New York, including The Adrienne Arsht Center, Artwalk in Wynwood, and The Schomburg Museum.
WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY ASHA GRIFFITH (Ensemble) is more than a Tap Dancer, but an International Hop Hop Artist, Songwriter, and creative force. Choreographed for four-time Grammy Award-winning musician Esperanza Spalding, Hilary Swank, Solange, and Pharrell Williams' Billionaire Boys Club, and Converse. Asha was a guest dancer in Dorrance Dance's Nutcracker Suite and Maurice Chestnut’s Beats, Rhymes, & Tap Shoes, an ode to A Tribe Called Quest. She continues to teach, choreograph and perform while directing Tap Water Dance Academy-a NJ based mobile training program for Beginner to Pre-professional tap dancers. ORLANDO HERNÁNDEZ (Ensemble) is a tap dancer based in Rhode Island. He has presented his work at On the Boards, SPACE Gallery, the Provincetown Dance Festival, Movement Research at the Judson Church, La Casa de Cultura Ruth Hernández Torres, and DANCE NOW at Joe’s Pub, and he is a member of the Bostonbased company Subject: Matter, directed by Ian Berg. He was the 2019 recipient of the Fellowship in Choreography from the RI State Council on the Arts and a 2019 recipient of the Rebecca Blunk Fund Award from the New England Foundation for the Arts. Tatiana remains eager to learn throughout her journey as an artist and furthering her professional and artistic experience. IDRIS DONIVAN FREDERICK (Piano) is 23 years old, and a pianist/composer born in Detroit, MI and musically raised in Louisville, KY. Before moving to New York to study at The New School of Jazz, where he is now a sophomore, he spent the first six years of his career performing alongside some of the biggest talents in and around the Louisville area. JAYLEN PETINAUD (Drums) is a Brooklyn Based drummer versed in multiple styles from jazz to gospel to hip hop & R&B. Jaylen was born into a musical family and grew up playing in church. In early 2020, he received his BM in Jazz Studies from SUNY Purchase College. He has worked with multiple artists such as Nicole Bus, Wayne Brady, Camille A. Brown & Dancers, Gabriel Garzon - Montano & Masego, to name a few. Jaylen has also been featured playing drums and acting in Tracy Morgan’s TBS show The Last OG, season 4. He is currently working on a new upcoming musical, Black No More, starring Tariq Trotter, also known as "Black Thought” from the Roots. RYAN STANBURY (Musical Director/Sound Designer) began with the violin, the trumpet, his main instrument, and the snare drum. He received a BA from Berklee College of Music in Boston, and has performed on stages throughout North America and abroad with artists such as Jermaine Paul, TeaMarrr, J. Hoard, Sherrie Maricle, and Alissia and collaborations with tap dance greats including Maurice Hines, Marshall Davis Jr., and The Manzari Brothers on ABC’s “The View” with his former band, AllBe. Currently, Ryan is the founder of Wilberforce & Annie, boutique music production company.
WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY DANIEL WINSHALL (Bass), born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, is both an upright and electric bass player. From a young age, he showed interest in music and began playing electric bass at age seven. Once he picked up the upright bass in middle school, he fell in love with jazz and soul music. After graduating from Boston Arts Academy, Daniel moved to New York City, where he graduated from the New School for Contemporary Jazz. Daniel started his professional career at the age of 14 at Wally’s Cafe in Boston. Since then, he has had the opportunity to perform and record with many artists, including Wynton Marsalis, Keyon Harrold, Big Baby Dram, and Julius Rodriguez. YNOT (ANTHONY DENARO) (Projection Designer) explores the design, sustainability, history, and Hip Hop community. Through a futurist lens, YNOT’s work manifests in dance, typography, music, and architecture. He has mainly participated, researched, and competed in the dance form of breaking for over 20 years. JAVIER PEDROZA (Costume Designer) is an innovative host, visual director, producer, celebrity stylist, and philanthropist based in New York City named Editor-AtLarge at 360 Magazine in January 2021. As a host, editor, and content producer, Javier has created various visual & audio podcasts, including Conciencias Con Cocktails and Latinx Heroes, where he highlights movers and shakers. Pedroza has had the privilege to interview incredibly accomplished and diverse leaders from various walks of life. Before focusing on hosting and his own production company, Under One Roof Productions. Javier was the Visual Director for the international fashion brand ESCADA overseeing the United States and Canada. Pedroza's experience in the retail & entertainment industries is showcased in his portfolio, which ranges from editorials, fashion shows, movie premiers, live performances, showroom designs, and pop-up stores to window and merchandising displays. Javier has also collaborated with brands such as Ralph Lauren, Netflix, St. John, Tommy Hilfiger, SONY, Neiman Marcus, Saks 5th Avenue, GANT,

Javier's styling experiences include styling supermodels and Hollywood celebrities for major red carpet award shows such as The Oscars, The Emmys, The Golden Globes, The Grammys, and The SAG Awards. ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international
companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through offsite presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists.
