PROGRAM NOTES Stephen Petronio Company’s 2021 Joyce Theater program of digital performances features two versions of a new duet, Are You Lonesome Tonight, set to the homonymous song performed by Elvis Presley. One version is a dance film co-directed by Stephen Petronio and Blake Martin, featuring dancers Lloyd Knight and Nicholas Sciscione. The second version, a collaboration between Stephen Petronio and filmmaker John Fitzgerald, adapts the duet for the stage. Are You Lonesome Tonight explores longing and intimacy as performers Ryan Pliss and Mac Twining dance through memories of being together. Set to another iconic Elvis Presley tune, Love Me Tender was originally choreographed and performed by Petronio in 1993 as a prelude to a collaboration with Cindy Sherman called The King is Dead. The new version features Nicholas Sciscione and is filmed by John Fitzgerald. Both Love Me Tender and Are You Lonesome Tonight are part of a new suite of Petronio works set to Presley songs. Petronio also debuts New Prayer For Now (Part 1). This full company work, also filmed by Fitzgerald, features music by Monstah Black with the Young People’s Chorus of New York City inspired by Balm in Gilead by Harry Thacker Burleigh and Bridge Over Troubled Water by Paul Simon. New Prayer For Now (Part 1) is the first installation of a four fronted work for virtual and live performance that employs the intimacy of touch and the power in space that will eventually allow for virtual participation of dancers from multiple locations. Trisha Brown’s 1973 work, Group Primary Accumulation, marks the 12th restaged work and 7th season of Petronio’s Bloodlines. This autobiographical project not only honors the lineage of American postmodern dance, but also traces the influences and impulses that have shaped choreographer Stephen Petronio, an artist uniquely positioned to preserve this postmodern tradition. This variation of Brown’s Primary Accumulation is performed in unison by four dancers placed equidistant from each other filmed from a long aerial view by John Fitzgerald. This is the first time a male body has been welcomed into this work, a statement uniquely aligned to the fact that Stephen was the first male dancer to be invited into Trisha Brown Company in 1979.
PROGRAM NOTES The program also includes Pandemic Portraits, a film by Dancing Camera featuring Petronio dancers. In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, dancers across the world have sheltered in place, unable to connect with each other and perform their art. Stephen Petronio Company dancers share their experiences while in “bubble residencies” at the Petronio Residency Center throughout this unprecedented time.
IN ABSENTIA Stephen Petronio presents In Absentia, in collaboration with Sarah Silver and Rafael Weil, tracing Stephen Petronio Company’s 2020 performance season that wasn’t. Featuring entries from Stephen's personal journals written in quarantine at the Petronio Residency Center, the text is paired with never-before-seen studio and behind-the-scenes photos by Sarah Silver and Grant Friedman in anticipation of our 2020 Joyce season that was preempted by Covid-19. ABOUT THE COMPANY Performance “Bessie” Award nominations for the 2017 Bloodlines season. The juxtapositions of Bloodlines repertory alongside Petronio’s works offers audiences an experiential insight into the evolution of this strand of creativity in American choreography. This season is the second iteration of Bloodlines(future), looking towards future generations of artists and heirs to the Bloodlines lineage and how these historical masters frame the future of modern dance. In 2020, SPC commissioned work from the emerging Johnnie Cruise Mercer, an artist whom Stephen has encouraged since his residency at the Petronio Residency Center in 2018. In 2016, Stephen Petronio Company expanded its focus on American postmodern dance to explore the meaning of legacy and its impact on the future and sustainability of this most ephemeral art form. With an eye toward securing artists' consistent ability to create and explore, the Petronio Residency Center (PRC) has been established as a retreat center where research and the creative process will be paramount. The site of PRC is Crow’s Nest, a 175-acre property in Round Top, New York, 20 minutes from the burgeoning Catskill and Hudson, New York art scenes. Paid artist residencies began in the summer of 2018, providing dedicated rehearsal space and resources to choreographers and their collaborators to develop new work in an environment unfettered by market constraints and away from the daily pressures of urban life. WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY STEPHEN PETRONIO (Choreographer/Artistic Director) is a choreographer, dancer, and the Artistic Director of the Stephen Petronio Company. For over 30 years, Stephen Petronio has honed a unique language of movement that speaks to the intuitive and complex possibilities of the body informed by its shifting cultural context. He has collaborated with a wide range of artists in many disciplines over his career and holds the integration of multiple forms as fundamental to his creative drive and vision. He continues to create a haven for dancers with a keen interest in the history of contemporary movement and an appetite for the unknown. Petronio was born in Newark, New Jersey, and received a B.A. from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, where he began his early training in improvisation and dance technique. He was greatly influenced by working with Steve Paxton and was the first male dancer of the Trisha Brown Dance Company (1979 to 1986). He has gone on to build a unique career, receiving numerous accolades, including a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, awards from the Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, an American Choreographer Award, a New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Award, and a 2015 Doris Duke Performing Artist Award. Petronio has created over 35 works for his company and has been commissioned by some of the world’s most prestigious modern and ballet companies, including William Forsythe’s Ballet Frankfurt (1987), Deutsche Oper Berlin (1992), Lyon Opera Ballet (1994), Maggio Danza Florence (1996), Sydney Dance Company (2003, full evening), Norrdans (2006), the Washington Ballet (2007), The Scottish Ballet (2007), and two works for National Dance Company Wales (2010 and 2013). Over his career, Petronio has collaborated with a wide range of artists in many disciplines. WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY Petronio, whose training originated with leading figures of the Judson era, performed Man Walking Down the Side of a Building in 2010 for Trisha Brown Company at the Whitney Museum, and performed his 2012 rendition of Steve Paxton’s Intravenous Lecture (1970) in New York, Portland, and at the TEDMED-2012 conference at the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington, DC. Petronio received the distinction of being named the first Artist-in-Residence at The Joyce Theater from 2012 to 2014. He has been entangled with visual artist Janine Antoni in a number of discipline-blurring projects, including the video installation Honey Baby (2013), created in collaboration with composer Tom Laurie and filmmaker Kirsten Johnson, and most recently Ally, in collaboration with Anna Halprin and Adrian Heathfield, which premiered at The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia in summer of 2016. Petronio and Antoni were the 2017 McCormack Artists in Residence at Skidmore college, where they showed their series of installations, Entangle. The book is available to order here. LARISSA ASEBEDO (Dancer) originally hails from Denver, Colorado and graduated summa cum laude from the Conservatory of Dance at SUNY Purchase. There, she completed her BFA in dance and minor in psychology while also studying abroad in Perth, Australia. Since moving to Brooklyn, Larissa has had the pleasure of working professionally with Rachel Germond, Daniel Gwirtzman, Megan Mizanty, Kensaku Shinohara, L’Opera de Lyon, and the Merce Cunningham Trust. Larissa joined Stephen Petronio Company in 2020 and enjoys her other vocation teaching dance to kids and teens.
WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY ERNESTO BRETON (Dancer), a native New Yorker, began his formal training at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia HS for the Performing Arts. He studied at SUNY Purchase from 2008-09 and then transferred and graduated from The Juilliard School in May 2013, under the artistic direction of Lawrence Rhodes. He has had the opportunity to dance works by José Limón, Andrea Miller, Raewyn Hill, Eliot Feld, Pam Tanowitz, Alexander Ekman, and William Forsythe. After graduating, Breton has danced in several works and projects, as a fellowship dancer, with the Merce Cunningham Trust; performed in the North American stage premiere of Die Materie: Matter & Spirit at the Park Avenue Armory. He is also a performer in the off-Broadway immersive theater production called Sleep No More and joined the Stephen Petronio Company in 2016. JAQLIN MEDLOCK (Dancer) works with people in need of capturing movement. She is a dancer, a dance photographer, and occasionally a dance model. Medlock is from the Bronx, NY and holds a BFA in Dance from Marymount Manhattan College. Medlock joined Stephen Petronio Company in 2011 after freelancing with numerous companies including Compagnie Julie Bour, NY2 Dance, Steps Repertory Ensemble, and Indelible Dance. She has performed works by various artists including Nacho Duato, Angelin Preljocai, Donald Byrd, Max Stone, Tyce Diorio, Sonya Tayeh, and Davalois Fearon. She worked as an assistant to choreographer Pedro Ruiz in NYC, and as an assistant to choreographer Warren Adams in Leeds, England. Medlock was named “On The Rise” by Dance Magazine in 2012, and received a TWI-NY Pandemic Award for Best Solo Dance Performance in 2020. TESS MONTOYA (Dancer and Education Director) was raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she began her training at the National Dance Institute of New Mexico. She graduated from Point Park University with a Bachelor of Arts in dance. Since moving to New York, Montoya has worked with Megan Kendzior, Daniel Gwirtzman, Daniel Roberts, and Alexandria Giroux. She has taken part in multiple workshops and performances through the Merce Cunningham Trust Fellowship Program. Tess is currently General Manager with Davalois
WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY Fearon Dance. She joined Stephen Petronio Company in 2015 and is Director of the Company’s Education Program. RYAN PLISS (Dancer) originally from Ithaca, New York, received a BFA in Dance Performance from the Conservatory of Dance at SUNY Purchase in 2014. Ryan has had the pleasure to work and perform with many renowned choreographers such as Nelly van Bommel/ NØA DANCE, Julie Bour, Johannes Wieland, and Doug Varone. He enjoys choreographing work of his own, and in 2017 presented at the New Steps Dance Festival in partnership with Chen Dance Center. Ryan has danced with Stephen Petronio Company since 2017. NICHOLAS SCISCIONE (Dancer and Assistant to the Artistic Director) was born and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He graduated magna cum laude with a BFA in Dance from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. Sciscione has worked with Joshua Beamish, Kyle Marshall Choreography, and 10 Hairy Legs. He is a grateful student of Susan Klein and the Klein Technique. Sciscione joined Stephen Petronio Company in 2011 and has been the Assistant to the Artistic Director since 2016. He was a 2017 NY Bessie Awards Nominated performer. MAC TWINING (Dancer) born in Baltimore, Maryland, trains with Nadege Hottier at Premiere Division Ballet and studies contemporary dance with a variety of artists in New York. He has performed with Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh Dance Company, Michael Mao Dance Company, and has participated in several workshops with the Merce Cunningham Trust. Mac has danced with Stephen Petronio Company since 2017. LLOYD KNIGHT (Guest Artist) was born in England and reared in Miami. He has a BFA from the New World School of the Arts under Artistic Director Daniel Lewis. Mr. Knight joined the Martha Graham Dance Company in 2005 and was promoted to Soloist in 2009 and Principal in 2014. He has had ballets choreographed on
MAIN ARTISTIC COLLABORATORS him by Nacho Duato twice, Andonis Foniadakis, Larry Keigwin, Doug Varone, Lar Lubovitch, Kyle Abraham, Liz Gerring, Michelle Dorrance, Anne Bogart, Pontus Linberg, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Pam Tanowitz and Mats Ek. Dance Magazine named Mr. Knight as one of the “Top 25 Dancers to Watch” in 2010. He partnered with New York City Ballet Principal Wendy Whelan in Ms. Graham's "Moon Duet" and with American Ballet Theatre's Principal Misty Copeland in a Graham duet from "Letter to the World". He was picked Best Performer of 2015 by Dance Magazine. He is currently a guest Principal artist for The Royal Ballet of Flanders. TRISHA BROWN (Choreographer, 1936-2017) is one of the most acclaimed and influential choreographers and dancers of her time. Brown’s groundbreaking work forever changed the landscape of art. With the founding of the Trisha Brown Dance Company in 1970, Brown set off on her own distinctive path of artistic investigation and ceaseless experimentation. The creator of over 100 choreographies, six operas, and a graphic artist, whose drawings have earned recognition in numerous museum exhibitions and collections, Brown’s earliest works took impetus from the cityscape of downtown SoHo, where she was a pioneering settler. In the 1970s, as Brown strove to invent an original abstract movement language – one of her singular achievements – it was art galleries, museums and international exhibitions that provided her work its most important presentation context. A major turning point in Brown’s career occurred in 1979, when she transitioned from working in non-traditional and art world settings to assume the role of a choreographer working within the institutional framework associated with dancing – the proscenium stage. In her lifetime Trisha Brown was the recipient of nearly every award available to contemporary choreographers. The first woman to receive the coveted MacArthur ‘Genius’ Grant (in 1991), Brown was honored by five fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts; two John Simon Guggenheim Fellowships; and Brandeis University’s Creative Arts Medal in Dance (1982). In 1988, she was named Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the government of France In 1999, she received the New York State Governor’s Arts Award and, in 2003, was honored with the National Medal of Arts. She has received numerous honorary
MAIN ARTISTIC COLLABORATORS doctorates, is an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and was awarded the 2011 New York Dance and Performance ‘Bessie’ Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2011, Brown received the prestigious Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize for making an “outstanding contribution to the beauty of the world and to mankind’s enjoyment and understanding of life.” MONSTAH BLACK (Musician) (they, them, their, he, him, his, she, her) is an interdisciplinary artist. Their musical creations have been commissioned internationally. They began their career as a spritely, fireball, performance artist with an emphasis on gender/genre fluid dance (post-modern/vogue/house dance), quirky, club kid infused, costume design and electro funk musical compositions. They received an MFA in New Media Art and Performance from Long Island University with an emphasis on Audio/Visual through the lense of a black, queer, non-binary aesthetic. They are currently one half of the electronic duo The Illustrious Blacks (with their husband, Manchildblack). Together they write, produce, record and perform internationally their original music within the framework of their electronic dance music DJ sets. The Illustrious Blacks have added to their arsenal streaming for social media platforms as a means to continue building their craft and maintain international visibility. This opportunity has expanded their ability to design in a pinch for streaming screen, costumes in a pinch and the development of tools to engage online viewers for extensive periods of time. Awards include Open Call The Shed 2018 recipient, The Tom Murrin Performance Award/Dixon Place Fellowship, Franklin Furnace Fund, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, American Music Center Live Music for Dance and NYSCA. They have garnered support from New York organizations including Dixon Place, Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater, The Field, Movement Research and New York Live Arts. Publications include, Vice.com, New York Magazine, Billboard Magazine, Paper Magazine, Gay Times, Mixmag Asia, Out.com, and The New York Times. Monstah is a Queer Arts Mentorship fellow as well as a fellow of Yaddo Residency.
MAIN ARTISTIC COLLABORATORS DANCING CAMERA (Video Production) is a NYC-based video production company that uses movement and visual storytelling to galvanize organizations and creatives to express bold visions through art, education, activism, community-building, and beyond. The company is composed of multi-talented artists with partially overlapping areas of expertise to create a combustion chamber of insight. Based in NYC, Dancing Camera has been working closely with artists and organizations since 2005, with an emphasis on longterm collaborations: Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Kyle Abraham, National Dance Institute, The New York Library for the Performing Arts/Jerome Robbins Foundation, Work & Process at the Guggenheim, The Yard, Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, Calpulli Mexican Dance Company, Princeton University, DanceNOW, Orchestra of St Luke’s, among scores of others. They won awards and have had works in international festivals, but their attention is consumed by realizing stories and visual metaphors for their collaborative artistic partners. Recent work includes: All Arts premiered a four-part television series with Works & Process at the Guggenheim that highlights pandemic bubble residencies for artists creating in the most trying times - a “Chef’s Table” for dance-making; Lincoln Center currently features four bespoke dance films created on-campus during the shutdown; take a meditative stroll through the verdant Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s stunning collection in spring and summer bloom in first person point of view; find delight and exactitude in Conrad Tao and Caleb Teicher’s boutique duet concert for the Library of Congress. Graduate of NC School of the Arts and member of USA Local 829. www.joedorandesign.com DREW ENGLISH (Director of Photography) is a Cinematographer based in New York City who's work has appeared on national commercial campaigns, HBO, Netflix, and several national film festivals. His clients include Bloomberg, Facebook, NY Magazine, Tiffany & Condé Nast, to name a few. His recent projects include work for the Netflix Original Series, Dirty Money, as well as national ad campaigns for clothing brands Puma and UntuckIt. In addition, Drew is the founder and executive producer of Lights & Years, a bi-coastal production collective that operates in the commercial and branded content space, as well as developing and producing narrative and music video projects. JOHN FITZGERALD (Film Director) is an artist, filmmaker and creative technologist based in NYC. He is a cofounder of the experiential studio, Sensorium. Recent credits include: Co-creator, Metamorphic (Sundance, New Frontier ’20 & SIGGRAPH ‘20) Co-creator, Zikr: A Sufi Revival (Sundance, New Frontier ’18 & IDFA DocLab ‘18) Co-creator, objects in mirror AR closer than they appear (Tribeca Storyscapes ’18) and Producer, The Sky Is A Gap (Sundance, New Frontier ’17). Fitzgerald’s cinematic films have screened at the Panama Biennial, the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival, Berlinale Talents, the Simón Patiño Foundation, and the Rotterdam International Film Festival. He holds an honors degree from the department of Modern Culture and Media Studies from Brown University. John is a former visiting scholar at the MIT Media Lab’s Center for Advanced Urbanism, a visiting artist at the MIT Center for Arts/Science/Technology, a Pulitzer Center Grantee, a recipient of the RLab XR Beta Residency, and an inaugural member of NEW INC, where he is now a mentor. John is a 2021-22 studio fellow at ONX, the XR accelerator created in partnership between the Onassis Foundation and the New Museum. MATT GARLAND (Cinematographer) is a freelance director of photography working out of New York City. He specializes in documentary filmmaking, short films and travel shows. A graduate from Keene State College in New Hampshire. When not on set he can usually be found outdoors fishing, hiking or traveling. Prior documentary work includes Somebody Feed Phil and The Innocence Files on Netflix and Seneca, a feature film on HBO Max.
MAIN ARTISTIC COLLABORATORS NIC PETRY (Film Editor) is the owner and Creative Director of Dancing Camera, a NYC-based video production company composed of multidisciplinary artists that creates bold, moving visuals. A professional dancer of 15 years and counting, Nic derives deep inspiration from his work with The Bang Group, whose rhythmdriven works probe the unique alchemy of percussive dancing with strains of Cecchetti ballet, contemporary dance, and even musicals in a setting of pressurized theatricality. Before arriving in New York in 2005, Nic received a MFA in Choreography and Performance from the University of Illinois, where he developed a student-run video production arm of the dance department. His first degree, in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton University, led him into the Panamanian jungle where he nocturnally tracked ocelots with microphone collars and discovered a beetle species. Nic strongly believes in the volatile intermix of rigor and instinct. JORDAN HWANG (Film Editor) is a filmmaker based in New York whose work has reached millions of views. He specializes in cinematic storytelling through directing, editing, and 3D visual effects. Growing up he trained in Wushu martial arts and was ranked first place at the Pan-American Wushu Championship as a member of the USA Team. The martial arts training took discipline, which inspired his love for motion design and rhythm. His background undoubtedly gave him the experience to be a skillful editor and make critical decisions that affect the final vision that the audience will see. Filmmaking has brought him all over the world and most recently led him to direct a feature film, Behind The Try: A Try Guys Documentary, and Netflix branded content for Over The Moon. PARKER JARVIE (Colorist) joined Company 3’s Chicago facility in 2015 after graduating from the city’s Columbia College with a degree in Cinema Art and Sciences with concentration in Post-production. He worked as an assistant and honed his technical and artistic skills, both assisting and coloring projects on his own. In late 2018, he transferred to the New York facility as an assistant and was then later promoted to Colorist, temporarily working out of the Santa Monica facility. Over the course of his time at Company 3, Jarvie has colored a number of unique campaigns for Adidas, Audi, Nissan, Porsche, GMC, Kenneth Cole, Kids Foot Locker, McDonald’s and many more. Recently, Parker has colored a number of spots with agency Design
MAIN ARTISTIC COLLABORATORS Parker grew up fascinated by film and started making skateboarding movies and short films with his friends in high school, but it was the powerful and innovative color work in features 300 (Stefan Sonnenfeld) and Drive (Tom Poole) that inspired him to pursue a career in color grading and is thrilled to be a colorist at the company where those films and so many others were graded. BLAKE MARTIN (Filmmaker) is a filmmaker and live-stream director based in New York City. He prizes his decade-long collaboration with Stephen Petronio Company and stands in awe of what it means to build a life around movement. FRANCISCO NUÑEZ (Composer/Conductor), a MacArthur Fellow and Musical America’s 2018 Educator of the Year, is a composer, conductor, visionary, leading figure in music education, and the Artistic Director/Founder of the Young People’s Chorus of New York (YPC), renowned worldwide for its diversity and artistic excellence. Since he founded YPC in 1988, Mr. Núñez has established recognition among composers of the child’s voice as a significant instrument for making music. His early years were the inspiration for YPC. Mr. Núñez grew up in close-knit Dominican family in New York City’s Washington Heights. As a piano prodigy, he spent his time away from school at home practicing piano. Through his musical talent, he met other children from different cultural and economic environments. He learned from them, and they learned from him. After he graduated from NYU as a piano performance major, he formed YPC, bringing children from all backgrounds together. With music as the equalizer, the diversity in the group resulted in new vocal colors, creating not only a vibrant new choral sound, but also an avenue for children to succeed. Mr. Núñez’s commitment to the arts, youth, and diversity have been recognized through numerous awards and honors, including: an ASCAP Victor Herbert Award; the New York Choral Society’s Choral Excellence Award; Hispanic Business Magazine’s 100 Most Influential Hispanics; ABC-TV’s Person of the Week; Musical America Worldwide’s 30 Influencers; Bang on a Can’s Visionary Award; NYU Steinhardt’s Distinguished Alumnus Achievement Award; and honorary Doctor of Music degrees from both Ithaca College and Gettysburg College.
MAIN ARTISTIC COLLABORATORS Army which were recognized as “Ad of the Day” by AdWeek. Other work of note includes striking music videos for Jesse McCartney, Sick Individuals, Clara Mae, to name a few, and award-winning short films “The Fisherman,” “Grace,” and “The Darkroom.” MARINE PENVERN (Costume Designer), originally from France, is a self-taught polymorph whose work spans from music and painting to fashion design. Her signature fashion designs led her to create costumes for dance since 2006 from her eponymous downtown Manhattan atelier, drawing inspirations for her designs while putting looks together for extraordinary dancers and choreographers. Penvern has recently opened her new atelier in Hudson, New York where she is now based. Alongside Stephen Petronio Company her collaborative efforts include work with David Michalek, Wendy Whelan, Lucinda Child, Zack Winokur, Emory LeCrone, Adam Weinert and Adam Barruch. “Without dance, my clothing wouldn’t exist .” ~Marine Penvern H. PETAL (Costume Designer) grew up in Liverpool, raised by his immigrant grandmother, a master pattern maker that had him creating cloths for his family by age ten. Petal briefly attended Central St. Martins in the late 80’s before dropping out to follow his aesthetic heart to England’s underground. Apprentice to a discerning group of elite designers by day, and creating havoc in the demimonde of London by night, he became known for his quietly subversive clothing and his chameleon-like persona. Often prominent, seldom recognized and always changing, he has a habit of disappearing for long stretches and turning up as if never gone. An ardent supporter of animal rights, he has recently resurfaced in Los Angeles to promote his cause while shunning all aspects of fame and notoriety. He has designed for a wide variety of Petronio’s choreographic adventures throughout the dance world since 1991, including: MiddleSexGorge, Close Your Eyes and Think of England, and Bud Suite for the Stephen Petronio Company, Extravenous for Lyon Ballet, and Laytext for The Deutsche Opera Berlin, among others. SHELLEY SENTER (Stager) is an independent dance artist whose work has been presented throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, Russia and Australia. She has been critically recognized and
MAIN ARTISTIC COLLABORATORS awarded for her distinct approach to movement, performance and pedagogy, collaborating with many distinguished artists, including Bebe Miller, Deborah Hay, Wally Cardona, Nina Martin, David Thomson and Lower Left Improvisation Collective. Senter danced with the Trisha Brown Dance Company from 1986-1991 and again in Japan in 2017, and has restaged and reimagined Brown’s seminal choreography around the world. Also a steward of Yvonne Rainer’s Trio A, she has been presented as a "living archive" of Brown's, Rainer’s and others’ work in autobiographical performancelectures in such venues as MoMA, the Tate Modern, Berliner Festival, and at the US Embassy in Vienna, where she was honored for her particular approach to transmission and performance by the Impulstanz International Dance Festival. Senter had the pleasure of working with Stephen Petronio as the Rehearsal Director for his Secret Ponies on AXIS, a mixed-ability dance company in Oakland, CA. Her work is informed by her experience as a teacher of the Alexander Technique and her investigation of its principles to the performing body and mind. YOUNG PEOPLE’S CHORUS OF NYC is a multicultural youth chorus internationally renowned for its superb virtuosity, brilliant showmanship, and innovative model of diversity. Founded by Artistic Director Francisco J. Núñez, a MacArthur Fellow and Musical America’s 2018 Educator of the Year, YPC’s mission and values are deeply rooted in providing children of all cultural and economic backgrounds with a unique program of music education and choral performance. YPC is committed to empowering our youth and providing pathways to success through the arts so that each child, no matter what race, gender, socioeconomic background, or religion can reach their full potential. Among YPC’s many awards is America’s highest honor for youth programs, a National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, which was presented to members of YPC at the White House. YPC also earned the distinction of “Choir of the World” in July 2018 at the International Choral Kathaumixw (Powell River, British Columbia), marking the first time a North American chorus has ever won this title in the 34-year history of Kathaumixw. ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international
companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through offsite presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists.
