CASSANDRA TRENARY
Originally commissioned by the American Dance Festival in 1988, STATE OF DARKNESS is one of Fenley’s most iconic works, a relentless 35-minute solo set to Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps." The work has a significant history at The Joyce, where it was revived in 2020 for a new generation of dancers in the theater’s first live performances from its stage after the March 2020 shutdown, and then returned in 2021 for six live benefit performances welcoming audiences back inside the Chelsea venue. Trenary and Trusnovec were both among the artists selected for those Joyce presentations, each bringing a distinct interpretation to Fenley’s demanding solo.

MICHAEL TRUSNOVEC
Created in 1990 as an homage to artist Keith Haring, BARDO returns more than three decades after its premiere, which took place at Haring’s memorial service at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The work takes its title from the Tibetan concept describing the liminal state between death and rebirth, unfolding as a meditation on transition, memory, and transformation. Marked by a striking interplay of stillness and motion, Bardo evokes a space continually emptied and refilled, suggesting both absence and renewal. Fenley’s connection to Haring dates back to their early artistic lives, when the two met in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, and later collaborated on the video work Video Clones in 1978. In BARDO, Fenley honors his legacy while grappling with loss, creating a work that is both personal and expansive in scope.

MOLISSA FENLEY (Choreographer) was born in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 15, 1954, grew up in Ibadan and Lagos, Nigeria (196171), and returned to the USA to attend Mills College 1971-1975. She moved to New York in 1975 and founded Molissa Fenley and Company in 1977. The Company has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The Molissa Fenley Archive is housed in the Jerome Robbins Dance Division, New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.
CASSANDRA TRENARY (Dancer), a native of Georgia, began her dance training at Lawrenceville School of Ballet. She joined the school’s company, Southern Ballet Theatre, in 2006 and went on to receive additional training at American Ballet Theatre’s Summer Intensive programs. In 2009 she joined the ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School. In 2011, she was invited to join ABT II (now ABT Studio Company) on their European tour as an apprentice. She then became an apprentice with the main Company and shortly afterwards joined the corps de ballet. She was promoted to Soloist in 2015 and to Principal Dancer in 2020. Her large repertory with the ABT includes several principal roles in full length ballets such as Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet and Manon, Giselle and Don Quixote by Kevin McKenzie after Petipa, La Bayadère by Natalia Makarova after Marius Petipa, Le Corsaire by Konstantin Sergeyev after Marius Petipa, John Cranko’s Onegin, Helen Pickett’s Crime and Punishment, Christopher Wheeldon’s Like Water for Chocolate and The Winter’s Tale and Sir Wayne McGregor’s Woolf Works. Furthermore, she collaborated closely with Alexei Ratmansky, performing in numerous ballets he choreographed such as in The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Harlequinade, Whipped Cream, and The Golden Cockerel. She also danced in works by George Balanchine, Sir Fredrick Ashton, Jiří Kylián, Michel Fokine, Mark Morris, Twyla Tharp, Kyle Abraham, Gemma Bond, Jessica Lang, Demis Volpi, Marcelo Gomez and Antony Tudor, among others. In addition, she devoted herself to numerous projects, including with Twyla Tharp and The Royal Ballet London. She also worked as a writer and choreographer for short films.
Cassandra Trenary is a Guggenheim Works & Process LaunchPAD residency recipient, was named a 2011 National YoungArts Foundation Winner and became a 2011 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts nominee. She also the received a 2015 Princess Grace Dance Honoraria and the Annenberg Fellowship for Dance in 2017. Cassandra Trenary has been a Principal Dancer with the Vienna State Ballet since the 2025/26 season.
MCHAEL TRUSNOVEC (Dancer) hailed by the New York Times as "one of the world's most luminous dancers," was a Principal Dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company from 1998-2019 performing in works by Mr. Taylor, as well as by Pam Tanowitz, Brian Arias, Margie Gillis, Doug Varone, and more. Additionally, he was Associate Rehearsal Director and served as the Director of Worldwide Licensing. Michael received a 2018 Dance Magazine Award, a 2006 Bessie Award, and was a 1992 YoungArts awardee and Presidential Scholar in the Arts. He is co-founder of the Asbury Park Dance Festival, co-curator of the Dance on Camera Festival and continues to stage Mr. Taylor's dances, teach, and perform. Notable recent highlights include the 2021 presentation of State of Darkness by Molissa Fenley at The Joyce Theater, and performing Episodes by George Balanchine with New York City Ballet during the company's 2020 season at Lincoln Center. Michael currently serves as the Dance Co-Director for the Metropolitan Opera.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION
The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 500 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists.
