A Note From Sara...

One night, a couple years ago after rehearsal, Jodi Melnick and I started talking about the meaning of virtuosity and the many ways it can look. For years, I only knew one way of accomplishing that: going big, over the top, drama at its highest. I thought that’s what I had to do to get people’s attention. Jodi challenged that thought for me.

She showed me that lifting your arm a certain way, being very specific on where you look, how long you choose to hold a pose, or the way you hold someone can be just as virtuosic.

I have been lucky enough to perform in the biggest houses in the world, doing grand productions, pouring my heart out. It’s what comes naturally to me; it doesn’t feel like a risk. Three years ago, I decided it was time to go a different route, a route that was vulnerable for me artistically and that would be the biggest challenge for me thus far in my career. This project. Breaking down the fourth wall, and playing to a house that can see every single breath I take or finger I move. I would like to say that I curated this evening, but the truth is, New York did. My partnership with every single person involved tonight was cultivated in this city, not by chance, but by being open to every opportunity that’s come my way. It all brought me to them. It took three years, a pandemic, and a personal burn out to get to the final product you will see tonight.

Art imitates life, and we can’t overlook the fact that we are all changed humans from these past two years. The way we look at someone, or hold someone will never be the same. I had no rules, wants, or needs when it came to creating. I let go of any and all preconceived ideas of who I am as an artist, and I let each collaborator come up with their own versions of Sara, their own versions of virtuosity. It will be raw, honest, and at times messy. The fun part is, I will be living out these different versions of myself all in one night. Actually that sounds exhausting, let’s be honest.

In the end, I am nothing without my collaborators. It’s because of them that this evening exists. I will forever be grateful to them for this evening. It has truly been an honor of a lifetime to be in their creative space. And a huge thank you to Linda Shelton and Ross LeClair, who were there every step of the way. This is just as much your program as it is mine.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY SARA MEARNS (Performer) is a principal dancer with New York City Ballet, winner of the prestigious Bessie Award (2018), the Dance Magazine Award (2019), and an honorary doctorate from the University of South Carolina (2019).

Sara is known for her roles as the Swan Queen in Swan Lake and for Balanchine ballets including Jewels (Diamonds) and Symphony in C, among countless others. She has originated roles in ballets by choreographers including Justin Peck, Kyle Abraham, Alexei Ratmansky, Pam Tanowitz, Andrea Miller, and Christopher Wheeldon, to name a few, and has appeared as a guest artist with the Paul Taylor Dance Company with Dances of Isadora (Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation), The Martha Graham Company (2019 Gala in Etkasis), The Cunningham Centennial Celebration (The Merce Cunningham Trust), Bill T. Jones/ Lee Ming Wei, and Company Wang Ramirez (No. 1). Sara appeared in New Bodies, a collaboration with Jodi Melnick, at the Spoleto Festival in South Carolina and the Guggenheim Museum in NY. At New York City Center, she has appeared in the Fall for Dance Festival (2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019), and the 2018 Balanchine Festival. Sara was a guest artist alternating the role of Victoria Page in the US Premiere of Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes. Sara made her theatrical debut in I Married an Angel directed/choreographed by Josh Bergasse at NY City Center Encores in March 2019. In summer 2019, she danced at Jacob’s Pillow in a week long tribute to her called Sara Mearns: Beyond Ballet. In December 2019, she made her debut with The Metropolitan Opera in La Traviata. Throughout the pandemic, Sara remained busy, she was named a New York Times "Best Dancer of 2020,” and was nominated for a Bessie Award for State of Darkness at The Joyce. In December 2020, Sara starred in a virtual immersive Nutcracker at the Wethersfield with NYCB's Ballet Collective.

On April 15th, GALLOP APACE, a dance film starring Sara premiered with the Seattle Dance Collective, and this summer, she attended and performed at the Benois de la Danse Awards at the Bolshoi in Moscow. Sara recently worked with Twyla Tharp in TWYLA NOW at NYCC, and performed at Carnegie Hall in Jessica Vosk's My Golden Age. GUILLAUME CÔTÉ, C.Q. (Performer and Choreographer) is a native of LacSaint-Jean, Québec. He studied at Canada’s National Ballet School and joined The National Ballet of Canada in 1999. He quickly rose through the ranks and was promoted to Principal Dancer in 2004. Since then, Mr. Côté has danced most of the major classical roles with the National Ballet of Canada and has been the leading male figure of the company. He has had several lead roles created on him, notably, the role of Romeo in Alexei Ratmansky’s new Romeo and Juliet, Prince Charming in James Kudelka’s Cinderella, and the role of Gene Kelly in Derek Deane’s production of Strictly Gershwin, for the English National Ballet. He has also worked closely with such dance icons as Roland Petit, John Neumeier, William Forsythe, Christopher Wheeldon, and Crystal Pite.

As a guest artist, Mr. Côté has danced with The Royal Ballet, Bolshoi Theatre, American Ballet Theater, New York City Ballet, Teatro alla Scala, English National Ballet, the Mikhailosky Theater of St-Petersburg, New York City Ballet, Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires, Berlin’s Staatsoper, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Stuttgart Ballet, Hamburg Ballet, the Alberta Ballet, Verona Opera, and the South African Ballet Theater. Mr. Côté has also performed in numerous international galas.

In 2013, in addition to his position as a Principal Dancer, Mr. Côté assumed the role of Choreographic Associate with The National Ballet of Canada and today eight of his works are part of the company’s repertoire. In 2012, his work Enkeli won the Audience Choice Award for Best Choreography at The Tenth International Competition for The Erik Bruhn Prize. That same year, his work for ProArteDanza, Fractals: a pattern of chaos, was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Choreography. Mr. Côté’s first full-length ballet, Le Petit Prince, was presented during the National Ballet’s 2016 season in front of sold-out houses. In 2017, Mr. Côté was chosen to participate in the landmark National Arts Centre Commission Encount3rs, pairing three of Canada’s outstanding choreographic talents with three of the country’s most exciting composers performing together with the National Arts Centre Orchestra.

In 2021, Guillaume Côté founded his own company Côté Danse focused on the multidisciplinary creation of innovative works with the mission of making dance seen and experienced differently. In the summer of 2021, he created +(dix), presented at the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur and then at the Fall for Dance North in Toronto. Also in 2021, he created Touch with Thomas Payette, an immersive multidisciplinary work that was presented 83 times in Toronto to sold-out houses.

In 2011, Mr. Côté was awarded “La médaille de l’Assemblée Nationale du Québec” for his work in the arts. In September 2014, Mr. Côté was named the Artistic Director of the Festival des Arts de Saint Sauveur, the largest summer dance festival in the country. In 2021, Mr. Côté was appointed a Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Québec, the highest distinction given by the government of Quebec.

MERCE CUNNINGHAM (1919 - 2009) (Choreographer) is widely considered to be one of the most important choreographers of all time. His approach to performance was groundbreaking in its ideological simplicity and physical complexity: he applied the idea that “a thing is just that thing” to choreography, embracing the notion that “if the dancer dances, everything is there.”

Cunningham was born in Centralia, Washington, and attended the Cornish School in Seattle. There, he was introduced to the work of Martha Graham (he would later have a six-year tenure as a soloist with her company) and met John Cage, who would become the greatest influence on his practice, his closest collaborator, and his life partner until Cage’s death in 1992. In 1948, Cunningham and Cage began a relationship with the famed experimental institution Black Mountain College, where Cunningham first formed a dance company to explore his convention-breaking ideas. The Merce Cunningham Dance Company (originally called Merce Cunningham and Dance Company) would remain in continuous operation until 2011, with Cunningham as Artistic Director until his death in 2009. Over the course of his career, Cunningham choreographed 180 dances and over 700 Events. Across his 70-year career, Cunningham proposed a number of radical innovations to how movement and choreography are understood, and sought to find new ways to integrate technology and dance. With long-term collaborations with artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Charles Atlas, and Elliot Caplan, Cunningham’s sphere of influence also extended deep into the visual arts world.

Cunningham earned some of the highest honors bestowed in the arts, and his dances have been performed by groups including the Paris Opera Ballet, New

York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, White Oak Dance Project, the Lyon Opera Ballet, Ballett am Rhein, and London’s Rambert.

VINSON FRALEY JR (Performer and Choreographer) was born in Statesville, North Carolina and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He began his formal training in voice and drama at DeKalb School of the Arts. He started dancing at the age of 14 under the direction of Lynise and Denise Heard at DanceMakers of Atlanta.

Fraley received his BFA in dance from NYU Tisch in 2015. During his final year of college, he became a member of Kyle Abraham’s A.I.M (Abraham.In.Motion) and later went on to join the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company in 2017. Vinson has been a frequent collaborator with Carrie Mae Weems. He collaborated with Sterling Ruby and the Metropolitan Museum for the In America: A Lexicon of Fashion exhibition. Fraley teamed up with artist Janet Biggs in a work made for Arts at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). He was a part of Damien Jalet and Kohei Nawa’s latest production Planet [wanderer], which premiered at the Théâtre National de Chaillot. Vinson has also performed at Frieze Art Fair under the direction of Stephen Galloway. He has also worked with international choreographer Bobbi Jene Smith. Most recently, Vinson was named one of Harlem Stage’s Emerging Artist cohorts.

He has had the opportunity to present solo works in the US, Germany, and France.

This past summer, he debuted a new work at The Watermill Center alongside his brother Tajah Fraley, and also shared his latest solo for the Spring Hill Arts Gathering’s Art For Justice program. Vinson’s choreography and movement direction have been seen in videos by Calvin Klein, Serpentwithfeet, Vogue, Nike, and Pattern Beauty. Vinson contributed an original music composition for the Bill T. Jones/ Arnie Zane Company’s newest work titled Afterwardsness.

His work has been written about and featured in various publications, including The New York Times, Interview Magazine, and he has appeared on the cover of V Magazine, I-d Magazine, Highsnobiety, Document Journal, Dance Magazine, among others.

Vinson is thrilled and honored to be sharing the stage with Sara at The Joyce.

He is thankful for everyone who helped him bring this work to the stage.

BETH GILL (Choreographer) is a choreographer based in New York City since 2005. Combining experimental and traditional approaches, she makes formal and exacting works centered around acts of obsession and transformation.

Gill is the proud recipient of multiple awards: Herb Alpert, Doris Duke Impact, Foundation for Contemporary Art, and two Bessies. At 40 years old, she has produced six commissioned evening length works met with critical acclaim. She has toured nationally and internationally and been honored with (among others): Guggenheim Fellowship, NEFA’s National Dance Project grant, Princeton’s Hodder Fellowship and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Extended Life Artist in Residence.

Gill’s dances are serious, slow moving, and chiseled; meditative experiences poised between performance and visual art. They feel like pressurized objects sustaining tension and seeking release. Paradoxically her work is both intimate and alienated, intuitive and analytical. She dreams and visualizes her dances and also critically evaluates them to understand how concept, form, aesthetics,

culture, and ethics are informing each other. Gill uses abstraction as a way to dilute meaning in order to access a symbolic, associative language. In this way, her work is in dialogue with modern and contemporary psychology.

AUSTIN GOODWIN (Choreographer) is a Brooklyn based multi-hyphenate performer. He graduated from The Juilliard School in 2015. Austin was named a 2010 YoungArts winner in choreography as well as a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. He is the 2015 recipient of the Hector Zaraspe Choreography Award.

Austin’s performance credits include: Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More 2012-2020; Broadway’s Fiddler on the Roof 2015-2016; Changers, directed by Spike Jones 2017; His film credits include In the Heights and Tick, Tick, Boom.

His work has been performed at The Kennedy Center, Nantucket Dance Festival, The Gusman Theatre, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Peter Jay Sharpe Theatre.

He was recently featured for his comedy and writing in Dance Magazine and plans to continue this work.

MARC HAPPEL (Costume Designer) is the Director of Costumes at New York City Ballet. Since 2006, Mr. Happel has overseen the costumes for NYCB’s entire repertory, including all nine Fall Fashion Galas. His costume designs for NYCB include George Balanchine’s Symphony in C and Tschaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 2, as well as ballets by Nicolas Blanc, Mauro Bigonzetti, Kim Brandstrup, Jean-Pierre Frohlich, JR, Benjamin Millepied, Peter Martins, Justin Peck, Alexei Ratmansky, and Peter Walker. Prior to working at NYCB, Marc worked with the Metropolitan Opera Costume Department and with Barbara Matera Ltd. Other credits from his career include Kitty Killer, Charlie (Theatre Couture), Coup de Theatre (Cherry Lane Theatre), Tell-Tale (PS122/Cherry Lane Theatre), Rufus Wainwright (Tour), and for Kiki & Herb, Kiki & Herb Alive on Broadway (Helen Hayes Theatre); Stop, Drop, and Roll; Do You Hear What We Hear; and Kiki and Herb Will Die for You (Carnegie Hall). Mr. Happel also worked closely with actor Daniel Day-Lewis for the 2017 Paul Thomas Anderson film The Phantom Thread and was instrumental in conceiving the iconic design of the red AIDS ribbon.

JACQUELIN HARRIS (Performer) from Charlotte, NC, began her dance training at Dance Productions Studios under the direction of Lori Long. She graduated with honors from the Ailey/Fordham BFA Program in Dance. In 2016, Ms. Harris was named one of “25 to Watch” by Dance Magazine. She received a 2017 dance fellowship from the Princess Grace Foundation-USA. In 2019, she performed in Merce Cunningham's Night of 100 Solos: A Centennial Event, which won a New York Dance and Performance Bessie Award. In 2021, Ms. Harris worked with Twyla Tharp in her production of TWYLA NOW alongside artists of New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. She was a member of Ailey II and joined the Company in 2014.

EZRA HURWITZ (Audio Interludes) trained at the school of American Ballet and danced professionally with the Miami City Ballet. Following his career on the stage, Ezra went on to study film at Columbia University and has created branded films for major cultural institutions like the Guggenheim Museum, New York Times, Martha Graham Dance Company, SF Ballet, Houston Ballet, Museum of Modern Art, American Ballet Theatre and Lincoln Center.

Shortly thereafter, Ezra was tapped by acclaimed filmmaker Spike Jonze to collaborate on work for the fashion label, Opening Ceremony; and was similarly recruited by brands like Tiffany's, Dior, Smirnoff, Apple, Aldo, Stella Artois, Lego, LG, and more. Additionally, Ezra has worked with Broadway shows (Chicago, Carousel, Oklahoma, and Moulin Rouge) to create films and campaigns.

In 2021, Ezra received an Emmy Award for his short film Inside & Outwards, featuring Sarah Jessica Parker, with music by Sufjan Stevens. That year, his video for Sufjan Stevens’ Sugar also received a Webby Award nomination, a Cyclope Award, AICP Award, and was featured in Indie Wire as among “The Best Music Videos of 2020.”

BURR JOHNSON (Performer) has danced for John Jasperse Projects, Kimberly Bartosik/daela, and Shen Wei Dance Arts. He has also worked for Marina Abramović/Givenchy, Walter Dundervill, Ryan McNamara, Netta Yerushalmy, Helen Simoneau, Boris Charmatz, Isabel Lewis, Nick Mauss, Peter Sellars, Christopher Williams, Bill Young, Jack Ferver, and the Merce Cunningham Trust.

His choreographic work has been presented through Movement Research, Dixon Place, Abrons Art Center, Danspace Project, The American Dance Festival, GIBNEY, and Works and Process at the Guggenheim. He has guest-taught at Philadelphia University of the Arts, the University of Utah, Salem College, Goucher College, Virginia Commonwealth University, UNC Greensboro, and The American Dance Festival. He has received artist residencies through New York Live Arts Studio Series, The Ellis-Beauregard Foundation, and Redtail Arts.

As a gardener, he works as a consultant with Margaret Roach on her garden in Copake, NY. (2020 Bessie Honoree, Outstanding Performer, Kimberly Bartosik's through the mirror of their eyes).

HARRIET JUNG AND REID BARTELME (Costume Designers) met in 2009 while pursuing fashion design degrees at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. They started designing collaboratively in 2011 and have focused their practice primarily on costuming dance. In 2015 they were commissioned by the Museum of Art and Design in New York to develop a costume-centric performance work and have since devised two performances at the Guggenheim Museum to shed light on collaborative practice in design and dance. Reid & Harriet Design has completed research fellowships at NYU Center for Ballet and the Arts and the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. They continue designing costumes and sets for dance productions around the world while expanding the scope of their practice outside the theater.

JOHN KING (Composer and Instrumentalist) is a composer, guitarist, and violist who composer for and performed with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 1985-2011. Since April 2020 he and choreographer Brandon Collwes, a former MCDC dancer, have been presenting weekly live performances online with dancers and musicians from NYC, across the country and around the world. His most recent CD, Free Palestine for string quartet, is available from New World Records. The music for 100tone-candles 2022 comes from randomly selected excerpts from his body of work for MCDC, as well as a simultaneous composition for prepared viola and electronics written specifically for Sara Mearns’ season at The Joyce.

JODI MELNICK (Performer and Choreographer) is a NYC based choreographer, performer, and teacher, devoted to dance. Melnick’s rich dance history includes dancing in the Twyla Tharp dance company (1990-1994, 2009), performing with Mikhail Baryshnikov (2005-2008), co-choreographing a solo with Trisha Brown (One of Sixty Five Thousand Gestures), and continued collaborative experiences with Sara Rudner, Vicky Shick, Charles Atlas, Jon Kinzel, David Neumann, Rashaun Mitchell, Silas Reiner, Maya Lee-Parritz, Sara Mearns, Yoshiko Chuma, John Jasperse, Paul Kaiser, Liz Roche, Madeline Hollander, and playwright Sibyl Kempson.

Her work has been presented at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Fisher Theater, The Guggenheim Museum, New York Live Arts (NYLA), The Kitchen, Danspace Project, La Mama, City Center, The Joyce Theater, The Spoleto festival, Jacob's Pillow, and internationally throughout Ireland, Japan, Estonia, and Russia.

Melnick is honored with a Doris Duke Impact Award (2014), a Guggenheim Fellow (2012), a Jerome Robbins New Essential Works Grant (2010-2011), a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grant (2011), two Bessie Awards for sustained achievement in dance (2001 and 2008), and a two-year extended Life grantee awarded from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Center (LMCC), and a 2019 Center for Ballet Arts residency fellow.

Currently, Melnick is creating a new work for dancer Taylor Stanley, premiering at Jacob's Pillow, July 2022.

Melnick is an adjunct professor of dance at Barnard College and Sarah Lawrence College.

RASHAUN MITCHELL + SILAS RIENER (Stagers) are New York-based dance artists. Their ongoing work involves the building of collaborative worlds through improvisational techniques, digital technologies, and material construction.

Together they have been artists-in-residence at LMCC, Mt Tremper, pieter, Jacob’s Pillow, New York City Center, The Watermill Center, MANCC, Headlands Center for the Arts, BOFFO, New York City Center, The Center for Ballet and the Arts, and Baryshnikov Arts Center. Their work has been commissioned by Danspace Project, Madison Square Park, The Joyce Theater, BAM/Next Wave, The Barbican, EMPAC, The Walker Art Center, MCA Chicago, REDCAT, The Wexner, On The Boards, The LAB, Marfa Sounding, Culture Summit Abu Dhabi, SFMOMA, and MoMA PS1.

RASHAUN MITCHELL (Stager) graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 2000 and since then has worked with many artists including: Chantal Yzermans, Donna Uchizono, Pam Tanowitz, Risa Jaroslow, Sara Rudner, Jonah Bokaer, Richar Colton, Deborah Hay, and Rebecca Lazier. He has received numerous awards: a 2014 Guggenheim Fellowship, a Princess Grace Award: Dance Fellowship (2007), a New York Dance and Performance Bessie Award for sustained achievement in the work of Merce Cunningham 2004-2012 (2011), a Bessie for “Outstanding Emerging Choreographer” (2012), and a grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Art (2013). He is a Cunningham Fellow and licensed stager of the repertory. His choreography has been presented in NYC

by Danspace Project, Baryshnikov Arts Center, LMCC, La Mama Moves Festival,

Mount Tremper Arts, Skirball Center at NYU, the Museum of Arts and Design, and at numerous venues and universities throughout the East Coast. He has been on faculty at Sarah Lawrence College and was a full-time Professor of Dance at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. In 2013 Mitchell and Riener were listed in Dance Magazine's "25 to Watch" and were selected for LMCC's inaugural Extended Life Dance Development Program.

CHALVAR MONTEIRO (Performer), from Montclair, NJ, began training at Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts and went on to study at The Ailey School before receiving his BFA in Dance from SUNY Purchase. Mr. Monteiro has worked with Sidra Bell Dance New York, Elisa Monte Dance, Keigwin + Company, BODYTRAFFIC, and Abraham.In.Motion. He assisted Kyle Abraham in setting and creating work for Barnard College, Princeton University, Emory University, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and Wendy Whelan’s Restless Creature. In 2019, Mr. Monteiro was selected to participate in Merce Cunningham Trust’s Night of 100 Solos: A Centennial Event.

His choreography has been presented as part of Alvin Ailey’s 2021 Virtual Spirit Gala, as well as at other festivals and institutions across the U.S. Mr. Monteiro is currently on faculty at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. He was in Ailey II and joined the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 2015.

SILAS RIENER (Stager) is a graduate of Princeton University and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and was a member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 2007-2012. He has performed with Chantal Yzermans, Takehiro Ueyama, Christopher Williams, Joanna Kotze, Jonah Bokaer, Rebecca Lazier, Tere O'Connor, Wally Cardona, and Kota Yamazaki. His own work has been curated at EMPAC, The Chocolate Factory, LMCC's River to River Festival, The Serpentine Pavillion, and Danspace Project. His ongoing collaboration with artist Martha Friedman has resulted in works at Andrea Rosen Gallery 2, The Henry Museum, Locust Projects Miami, and Jessica Silverman Gallery.

RYAN SEATON (Composer and Instrumentalist) is a Bessie-nominated, New Yorkbased composer and multi-instrumentalist. Seaton has created compositions, sound design, horn arrangements and vocal works and for many acclaimed recording and performing artists including Joanna Kotze, Lingua Ignota, Rachel Comey, Grey Reverend, Liz Gerring, Jean Butler, Zsuzsa Rozsavolgyi, Lance Gries, Ririe Woodbury, Dark Sky, Beth Gill, and Mara Hoffman. His work has been featured at BAM, New York Live Arts, Baryshnikov Arts Center, The Kitchen, and Danspace, among many other venues. Seaton also composes for film and TV. He recently composed the score for Militiaman, which is a finalist for a Student Academy Award.

RAHM SILVERGLADE (Composer and Instrumentalist) has done many things.

Most of them are small, regular things. But many moons ago, Rahm started playing a lot of piano and then studied music composition for a while and then started producing music on his own. He is one quarter of the band altopalo.

If you try hard you can find his solo music under the name , with an A. Lately, he has been obsessed with making music using motion sensor gloves.

He regularly makes music with other lovely people, including Vinson. Rahm is totally stoked and honored to be sharing a space with such powerful artists like Vinson and Sara.

TAYLOR STANLEY (Performer) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and began his dance training at the age of three at The Rock School in Pennsylvania.

He attended summer programs at Miami City Ballet in 2006 and 2007 and at the School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet, during the summer of 2008 before enrolling full-time at SAB in the fall of that same year. In September 2009, Taylor became an Apprentice with New York City Ballet, and joined the Company as a member of the Corps de Ballet in September 2010. He was promoted to Soloist in February 2013 and to Principal Dancer in May 2016.

Taylor received the Mae L. Wien Award for Outstanding Promise in 2009 and was the 2011-2012 recipient of the Janice Levin Award. He performed with NYCB Soloist Troy Schumacher’s BalletCollective from 2010-2015, and has had the privilege of working with various choreographers such as Jodi Melnick, Andrea Miller, Annabelle Lopez-Ochoa, Liz Gerring, Pam Tanowitz, Kim Brandstrup, Christopher Williams, Rashaun Mitchell + Silas Reiner, and Omar Roman de Jesus. Taylor has also participated in workshops with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Nederlands Dans Theater, and Batsheva Dance Company. In 2019, he received a Bessie Award for “Outstanding Performance” in Kyle Abraham’s The Runaway, choreographed for NYCB in 2018. In 2020, Taylor danced a solo work choreographed by Abraham titled Ces noms que nous portons, filmed at Lincoln Center’s Josie Robertson Plaza. He has also been a guest artist with Andrea Miller’s company GALLIM, appearing in the 2020 film adaptation of Miller’s BOAT and the live performance installation titled You Are Here presented at Lincoln Center’s Hearst Plaza in the summer of 2021. In July 2022, Taylor will perform in an evening-length program of his own curation titled Dichotomous Being as part of the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival’s 90th anniversary season.

Taylor also currently pursues his Bachelor’s Degree through St. Mary's College of California's LEAP program.

PAUL ZIVKOVICH (Performer) is an Australian-born performer, movement director, and creative collaborator based in Brooklyn, New York. He has worked with the Australian Dance Theatre, Sydney Dance Company, Bonachela Dance Company, Akram Khan Company, Eastman/Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and Punchdrunk. Since 2012, Paul has performed in Punchdrunk’s acclaimed Immersive Theatre Production, Sleep No More. He plays several roles, including Macbeth, and serves as Rehearsal Director. Paul was also instrumental in bringing Sleep No More to Shanghai where he was part of the creative team that redefined the show for a new audience. In 2004, he received ‘Most Outstanding Performance by a Male Dancer’ at Australian Dance Awards and received a nomination for ‘Best Leading Actor in a New Production of a Play’ at the 2013 BroadwayWorld UK / West End Awards.

Paul was Assistant Choreographer for the feature film Anna Karenina, Movement Director for TV series Tin Star (Sky Atlantic/Amazon Prime), Movement Director for Dior AW19 film campaign, and a featured dancer in Hotel Armada - a feature length dance film by filmmaker YOPOOSH. Paul is currently in London working with Punchdrunk on a new production and continues to work internationally as a performer & movement director for film, TV, music videos, visual art, and fashion.

DAVISON SCANDRETT (Lighting Designer) is a Bessie award-winning lighting designer and production manager based in Brooklyn, NY. He has created lighting for works by Pam Tanowitz, Merce Cunningham, Rashaun Mitchell + Silas Riener, Charles Atlas, Sonya Tayeh, Sarah Michelson, Netta Yerushalmy, Moriah Evans, Mina Nishimura, Dylan Crossman, Andrew Ondrejcak, Rebecca Lazier, Mike Birbiglia, and Neal Brennan. Production management credits include projects with Wendy Whelan, Marina Abramovic, Bill T. Jones, Benjamin Millepied, Kyle Abraham, BalletBoyz, Jennifer Monson, Brian Brooks, Silk Road Ensemble, Steve Reich, The Knights, Lincoln Center Festival, Park Avenue Armory, Lyon Opera Ballet, and Paris Opera Ballet. He served as Director of Production for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 2008-2012 and is currently the Design & Production Consultant for the Merce Cunningham Trust.

JOYCE THEATER PRODUCTIONS (JTP) is the in-house producing entity for The Joyce Theater Foundation, Inc., formed to create original work for The Joyce’s stage and for worldwide touring. This initiative provides dance artists who have little or no formal management or infrastructure the means to create productions of the highest standards of excellence. The program also includes the Associate Company model, offering sustained producing, fiscal, and/or administrative management to companies that may require short or longer term support.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists.
