ABOUT THE COMPANY The award-winning Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO!) is the resident company of The Kimmel Cultural Campus. Moving gracefully into the next decade, PHILADANCO! celebrates 54 years of providing exceptional dance performances and training to dancers and audiences in the US and around the world.

Since inception (1970), PHILADANCO! has made a significant impact on the dance world. As a cultural ambassador representing the United States, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the City of Philadelphia, its artistic direction and renowned national and international guest choreographers have developed a reputation of producing a dance repertory with passion, power, skill, and diversity. The stellar faculty, handpicked by Joan Myers Brown, Founder of PHILADANCO!, has trained over 6,500 dancers in its comprehensive program, helping dancers achieve the highest caliber of technical skill in dance and performance. The unique blend of dance styles of PHILADANCO!, Danco-ology, and its roster of concert performances and residencies has made them one of the most sought-after modern dance companies in the United States.

PHILADANCO! has received an NEA Fellowship and the prestigious National Choreography Planning Grant, and organized the historic first two International Conferences for Black Dance Companies in Philadelphia (1988). Since its inception, thousands assemble annually for the International Conference on Black Dance; headed by the International Association of Blacks in Dance (1991). Collaborations for the conferences include Get On The Good Foot with the Apollo Theater and Straight Outta Philly with Rennie Harris Puremovement. The company is commited to engaging with the community and frequently works with Drexel University, University of Pennsylvania, Next Move concerts, and Breaking Barriers, among others.

WHO'S WHO IN PHILADANCO! NIJAWWON MATTHEWS (Choreographer, From Dystopia to Our Declaration) is an internationally acclaimed director, choreographer, educator, and dancer. Nijawwon was selected as The Director’s Choice for the 2019 Dallas Black Dance Theatre season. He is a master teacher, whose appeal was featured in Dance Teacher Magazine. Utilizing his national and international experience as a dance educator and choreographer, he is the founding artistic director of the XY Dance Project, a pre-professional company. Nijawwon has performed in In the Heights and Black Nativity, and has performed on television. His concert career highlights include performing legacy work by choreographers Donald McKayle, George Faison, Otis Sallid, Milton Myers, Kevin Iega Jeff, Gary Abbott, and Christopher Huggins, and with companies including PHILADANCO!, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, and Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, among others. Presently, Nijawwon is on faculty and is a choreographer at Broadway Dance Center and The Joffrey Ballet School in New York City.

RAY MERCER (Choreographer, Balance of Power). A Native of Omaha, NE, Ray Mercer has set works on various companies across the country including PHILADANCO!, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, New Jersey Ballet, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Ballet Pensacola, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, and DRA (Dancers Responding to Aids). He has performed with Deeply Rooted Dance Theater, as a guest artist with Boston Ballet, and is currently in the Broadway production of The Lion King. He is resident choreographer for the Ailey/Fordham BFA Program. Mercer is the recipient of many awards including a 2012 Joffrey Ballet Choreographers of Color Award, a Pensacola Ballet Choreographers Award, and is a five-time winner of Broadway’s Gypsy of the Year Award for best onstage performance.

Recently acknowledged for his choreography in The New York Times, Chicago Sun Times, and Movement Magazine, Mercer has also been commissioned to choreograph a work for the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. CHRISTOPHER RUDD (Choreographer, Mating Season) is a Jamaican-born dancemaker whose work is informed by his experiences as a queer Black man in dance and transverses ballet, contemporary, and circus arts. He is a 2019 Guggenheim Choreography Fellow, the inaugural New Victory LabWorks Launch Artist, the creator of the groundbreaking works TOUCHÉ and LIFTED for American Ballet Theatre, a current resident artist for both BAM and Chelsea Factory, and was named one of 2023’s "six to watch" by American Theater Magazine.

In hopes of bettering the world through dance, his works blend contemporary dance, contemporary circus, and theatricality to speak to relevant issues. As founder of RudduR Dance, he is a two-time Exchange Alumni through the US State Department, having presented his works in the United States, Canada, France, Trinidad & Tobago, Burkina Faso, Ecuador, and Italy. His professional career includes Carolina Ballet, Les Grands Ballet Canadiens de Montréal, and Cirque Du Soleil. Rudd has created works for The Ailey School, Duke University, and UNC School of the Arts, and received residencies from CUNY Dance Initiative, Vendetta Mathea’s La Manufacture, Tofte Lake Center, Kaatsbaan, and STREB. TOMMIE-WAHEED EVANS, MBA (Choreographer, Somewhere Between Heaven and Earth).

A Guggenheim Fellow, Tommie-Waheed's work explores blackness, spirituality, queerness, and liberation. His training began with Karen McDonald, later receiving an Ailey School fellowship, and an MFA in Choreography from Jacksonville University. A former company member of Lula Washington Dance Theater, COMPLEXIONS Contemporary Ballet, and PHILADANCO!, he has created works for BalletX, Dallas Black, DCDC, and Ballet Memphis, among others.

Some recent accolades and honors include Resident Fellow at the Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University, Princess Grace Honoraria Award in Choreography, Inaugural “Joanie Award” from PHILADANCO!, and, recently, a Charles Augins Inspirational Artist Award from the International Association of Blacks Dance. Tommie is currently on the faculty at the University of the Arts and an Artist-in-Residence at PHILADANCO!.

JOAN MYERS BROWN, DFA, DHL, DA (Founder/Artistic Advisor). Founder of the International Conference of Blacks in Dance Companies in 1988, Ms. Brown is also the founder and honorary chairwoman for the International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD), an organization she established in 1991. IABD just received the 2023 National Medal of Arts this year from President Joe Biden. Brown is a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of the Arts and Howard University in Washington, D.C. She was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters by Ursinus College and Honorary Doctorates of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of the Arts. Listed in Who’s Who in America as an “innovator and communicator,” Ms. Brown’s efforts for dance excellence are only part of her contribution to the field. She was co-chair of Dance/USA Philadelphia. She received the Philadelphia Award and is documented in a publication Joan Myers Brown and the Audacious Hope of the Black Ballerina, by Brenda Dixon Gottschild. She has received many awards from the City of Philadelphia and the State of Pennsylvania. Brown was honored as a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania and Outstanding Alumni of West Philadelphia High School. In 2013, she received the prestigious National Medal of Arts Award from President Barack Obama and the United States Embassy’s Award for Cultural Diplomacy in Skopje, Macedonia. Brown was listed in Forbes Magazine introduced as one of the "50 Over 50" in 2022. Most recently Mid Atlantic Arts celebrated the remarkable Myers Brown with the 2022 Alan Cooper Leadership in the Arts Awardand will receive the 2024 Martha Hill Lifetime Achievement Award.

KAYLAH ARIELLE (Dancer), from Baltimore, MD, attended Baltimore School for the Arts, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and The Ailey School. She graduated from Spelman College with her BA in Dance Performance and Choreography. Kaylah also performed with the Atlanta Dance Connection.

ANKHTRA BATTLE (Dancer), from Newark, NJ, studied Dance Theater of Harlem, Peridance Capezio Center, Manhattan Youth Ballet, and studied at the B12 Berlin Workshop Festival in Germany. He is a former D/2 company member. Ankhtra is a 2022 BFA graduate from The University of the Arts.

LESLIE BUNKLEY (Dancer), from Atlanta, GA, trained at Price Performing Arts Center, TriCities High School, Atlanta Ballet, and the Metropolitan Dance Theatre. She received her BFAin Dance Performance from The University of the Arts where she performed works by many guest choreographers.

WILLIAM E. BURDEN (Dancer), from Philadelphia, PA, trained at the Creative & Performing Arts HS, the Rock School of Dance Education, and The Ailey School. William also trained with Tap Team Two & Company. William performed with Eleone Dance Connection and Dance Theater and Spectrum Dance Theatre. He received his BFA from the University of the Arts.

MIKAELA FENTON (Dancer), from Sicklerville, NJ, earned her BFA in Dance from the University of the Arts. She joined PHILADANCO’s D/2 apprentice company and after graduating became a member of PHILADANCO!. Mikaela is an active dance educator with Core Academy of Dance, Philadelphia School of Dance Arts, Ms. Carols Center for Dance, and The School at The Philadelphia Ballet.

MIKAL GILBERT (Dancer), from Virginia Beach, VA, attended The University of the Arts studying jazz performance, later to continue his dance training/education at Norfolk Academy. He trained at Dance Theatre of Harlem, COMPLEXIONS Contemporary Ballet, and The Ailey School. Mikal is a member of Koresh Dance Company and DanceIquailArts.

CHRISTIAN DIYAH GONZALEZ (Dancer), from Kissimmee, FL, studied at The Osceola County School for the Arts and is a graduate from Boston Conservatory at Berklee with a BFA degree in Contemporary Dance Performance. He studied and performed with Giordano Dance Chicago, The TL Collective, GagaLab NYC, and SpringboardX. ISRAEL HILTON (Dancer), from Tuscaloosa, AL, studied multiple dance styles and Musical Theatre at The Dance Centre. He is a BFA graduate from Alabama State University where he received the Ware-Spencer Best Male Ballet Dancer Award and worked with choreographers, Ja’Morris Rivers, James Atkinson, and more.

RAVEN JOSEPH (Dancer), from Jamaica, NY, received her 2023 BFA in Dance from The Julliard School in New York City. Her professional credentials include performing choreographic works

by Jawole Zollar, Francesca Harper, and Ohad Naharian, to name a few.

GRACE KIMBLE (Dancer), from Pittsburgh, PA, trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Ballet in Narberth, PA. Additional training included summer intensives at The Joffrey Ballet School, The Bolshoi Ballet, and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. Grace danced with PHILADANCO’s second company D/2 for two years prior to joining first company.

FLOYD MCLEAN JR. (Dancer), from East Orange, NJ, trained at Sharron Miller's Academy for the Performing Arts and Dallas Black Dance Theatre. He received his BFA from Point Park University. After graduation, he joined Dallas Black Dance Theatre’s DBDT: Encore!, performing works by choreographers Rennie Harris, Kate Skarpetowska, Joshua Peugh, and many more.

NATHAN E. MCNATT JR. (Dancer), from Washington, D.C., earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA with a minor in Music Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology. His professional credentials include Eleone’ Dance Theater and Garth Fagan Dance Company.

BRANDI PINNIX (Dancer), from South Brunswick, NJ, trained at American Repertory Princeton Ballet School, LINES Ballet, The Ailey School, The Juilliard School, Dance Theatre of Harlem, BalletX, and Point Park University. She has had the opportunity to work with choreographers including Eric Wagner, Sidra Bell, Dexandro Montalvo, Danielle Polanco, and Darshan Bhuller, among others.

BRENA KASHUN THOMAS (Dancer), from Chicago, IL, trained at Chicago High School for the Arts and Alonzo King Lines Ballet, Ballet Austin, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and The Ailey School. In 2019, Brena joined Ailey Il, performing works with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Brena has performed works by Gregory Dawson, William Forsythe, and Keelan Whitmore, to name a few.

KAMEREN B. WHIGHAM (Dancer), from Fort Lauderdale, FL, studied dance at Dillard High School Center for the Arts. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Dance from the University of the Arts and his film credit includes Tyler Perry's A Jazzman’s Blues.

BRITTANY WRIGHT (Dancer), from Shady Grove, MD, trained at Olney Ballet Center, Hope Garden Ballet, and City Dance. She continued her training at Towson University, receiving her BFA in dance and performance under professors including Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell, Catherine Horta-Hayden, Alison Sidenstricker, Runqiou Du, and Vincent Thomas.

KIM Y. BEARS-BAILEY (Artistic Director). A BFA graduate of The University of Arts (UArts), Bears-Bailey joined PHILADANCO! in 1981. A 1992 “Bessie” Award recipient, (The New York Dance and Performance Award), she represented PHILADANCO! at the 1988 American Dance Festival, performing works of Dr. Pearl Primus and appeared in the movie Beloved. BearsBailey is an Associate Professor of Dance at the University of the Arts. The former Principal Dancer, who retired from the stage in 2000, is one of few artists granted permission to remount the works of many world-renowned choreographers, including Talley Beatty, Pearl Primus, Gene Hill Sagan, and Louis Johnson. Bears-Bailey received the Mary Louise Beitzel Award for Distinguished Teaching and the Silver Star Alumni Award from UArts. Since 2009, she has co-choreographed, directed, and produced an annual "Dancing with the Stars of Philadelphia'" Fundraiser event. She received the 2017 "Bring it to the Marley" Icon Award and the 2018 ‘Legacy Award’ from DCNS Dance. Her likeness is immortalized on an Artists Mural located in the heart of Center City Philadelphia.

JANINE N. BECKLES (Associate Artistic Director/Lead Dancer) started dancing at Dance Theatre of Harlem for eight years under a fellowship scholarship and also trained at The Ailey School. She received a BFA in Dance Performance and a BA in Sociology from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. She danced professionally for five years with Dallas Black Dance Theatre. Janine is a 2018-2019 School of American Ballet Teaching Fellow.

She is a 2021 National Urban League Emerging Leader. Janine is a Board Member for the Philadelphia Volunteer Lawyers Association, and a 2023 MBA graduate from Southern New Hampshire University with a concentration in Leadership. Janine is also an adjunct professor at Rowan University.

TRACY VOGT (Rehearsal Director/Coach), from Erie, PA, received scholarships to the PA Governor’s School for the Arts, Jacob’s Pillow Modern Intensive, Point Park Summer Dance, and attended the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. She was also a scholarship student at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York, NY, where she was personally chosen to demonstrate the Martha Graham technique by School Director Denise Jefferson. For 12 years, Ms. Vogt was a principal dancer and Assistant Rehearsal Director with PHILADANCO!.

She was Rehearsal Director and Principal Dancer with the Wylliams Henry Contemporary Dance Company in Kansas City, MO, and Cleveland Contemporary Dance Theater. Tracy danced with Verb Ballets in Ohio under the direction of Hernando Cortez. She received the Philadelphia Rocky Award for Dance Excellence and has performed lead roles in works by Martha Graham, Paul Taylor, David Parsons, Gene Hill Sagan, Elisa Monte, and Talley Beatty, to name a few. Ms. Vogt has taught in Uganda, Rwanda, and Guinea, Africa, for the NGO MindLeaps. Ms. Vogt received her Master’s Degree in Dance from Hollins University.

ZANE BOOKER (Assistant Rehearsal Director/Coach), a native Philadelphian, is a former principal dancer with PHILADANCO!. Later, Booker moved to New York to study at the American Ballet Theatre. He appeared as a guest artist with major ballet companies including Netherlands Dance Theater and Les Ballet De Monte Carlos. Zane has taught and choreographed for several major national and international dance companies. In 2020, Zane was part of The Elephant in the Room with Rennie Harris and Raphael Xavier. In 2006, Zane founded Smoke, Lilies and Jade Arts Initiative (SLJ), a socially conscious, multimedia, dance theater company, promoting HIV/AIDS awareness. Booker’s latest venture was opening his own Brown Street Café in Philadelphia.

NICK KOLIN (Lighting Designer)'s works for PHILADANCO! include collaborations with Dawn Marie Bazemore, Thang Dao, Ray Mercer, Francisco Gella, Dianne McIntyre, and Sonia Dawkins. He has served as Lighting Director for the Apollo Theater’s Get on the Good Foot and designed for the Mark Morris Dance Group's Pepperland, Curlew River, The Trout, Little Britten, Numerator, and several other works. His other collaborations include with The Joffrey Ballet School, serving as Lighting Supervisor for the Trisha Brown Dance Company, Daniil Simpkin’s Intensio, Wendy Whelan’s Restless Creature, DanceBrazil, Dance Heginbotham, NY City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival, and Lincoln Center Festival. Other work includes projects with the Cincinnati Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, SYREN Modern Dance, Asolo Repertory Theater, the Drama League NYC, and Nike. He received his MFA from New York University Tisch School of the Arts.

MELODY BEAL (Technical Director). An Award winning Designer/Director, Melody has devoted over twenty years to PHILADANCO! as Technical Coordinator, starting under the tutelage of William H. Grant III. She is currently designing lighting for Negro Ensemble Company, Mindbuilders, Trilogy Opera Company, Asase Yaa African American Dance Theater, and La Guardia Performing Arts Center in New York City.

BRENT WOODS (Program/Stage Manager) was formerly the Senior Director of Arts and Culture at Montgomery County Community College. He oversaw the Arts and Culture Department, its Lively Arts Series, and supervised the Fine Arts Galleries. He has spent over 40 years as an Arts Administrator, Tour Manager, Production Manager, Lighting Designer, Company Manager, and Stage Manager. His dance credits include working with PHILADANCO!, Contemporary West Dance Theatre, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Headlong Dance Theater, Karen Bamonte Dance Works, and the Lula Washington Dance Ensemble. His theatre credits include the Freedom Theatre, The New York Theatre Workshop- iEl Conquistador! the First-Person Arts Festival, and the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival. Mr. Woods earned his Master’s in Arts Administration from Drexel University (2013) and his Bachelor’s degree from Temple University in Theatre/Communications and minor in Art History in 1991.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 475 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists.
