ABOUT THE PROGRAM Since taking the reins of the Paul Taylor Dance Company in 2018, I have been driven by a passion to find innovative ways to present the priceless legacy Mr. Taylor left to us – 147 dances – and to commission a new generation of American choreographers whose work, like Paul’s, is fresh, powerful, expressive, imaginative, and unexpected.

This year we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Paul’s evergreen Aureole. This lyrical, joyful work was a controversial departure from the norm of modern dance in 1962, and it catapulted the then 32-year old choreographer to the forefront of the dance world – a position he never relinquished. Along with Paul’s brilliant, early groundbreaking dances (Fibers, Events II, Images & Reflections, and Tracer) I'm presenting premieres by two utterly compelling and vibrant choreographers: Peter Chu and Michelle Manzanales, who bring diverse stories and perspectives to our repertory. The goal is to reveal a fascinating intersection of where our art form has been and where it is heading, while taking a fresh look at the radical side of the young Paul Taylor, in all its riveting power and beauty.

ABOUT THE COMPANY Dancemaker Paul Taylor (1930-2018) first presented his choreography in New York City on May 30, 1954. That performance marked the birth of the Paul Taylor Dance Company and the beginning of 64 years of unrivaled creativity by the dance maker, who became one of history’s most acclaimed artists and part of the pantheon that shaped America’s home-grown art of Modern Dance. The Company has since appeared in venues throughout the United States and around the globe, from college campuses and rural towns to major opera houses and performing arts centers, in more than 600 cities in 66 countries. Having molded his dancers into one of the world’s most celebrated ensembles, Mr. Taylor established Paul Taylor American Modern Dance in 2015 to give the artform a long-awaited home at New York’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Upon Mr. Taylor’s death in 2018, his chosen successor, Company member Michael Novak, became PTDC’s second Artistic Director. Under Mr. Novak’s leadership, the Company continues to present works from the vast canon of Taylor dances along with other seminal works of past and present, and commissions the next generation of choreographers to create works on Taylor dancers. In 2022 Mr. Novak invited New York City Ballet alumna Lauren Lovette, whom he had earlier commissioned to create a dance, to be PTDC’s first Resident Choreographer. Mr. Novak will bring the Company back to Lincoln Center for its annual multi-week engagement there in November 2022.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY PAUL TAYLOR (Founding Artistic Director) was one of the most accomplished artists this nation has ever produced. He established the Paul Taylor Dance Company in 1954, serving as both a virtuoso performer and a trailblazing choreographer until 1974, when he turned exclusively to choreography. During his 64-year career as a dance maker, Mr. Taylor helped define and shape the home-grown American art of modern dance through a matchless repertoire of 147 works with an extraordinary range of subject matter. In 2015 he established Paul Taylor American Modern Dance with the goal of creating an institutional home for modern dance at New York’s Lincoln Center. In addition to presenting Mr. Taylor’s works, PTAMD presents iconic works by great modern choreographers of the past and present, and commissions the dance makers of the 21st Century to work with the Taylor Company, thereby helping to ensure the future of the art form.

MICHAEL NOVAK (Artistic Director) became the second Artistic Director in the history of the Paul Taylor Dance Foundation in September 2018, having been chosen by Mr. Taylor to succeed him upon his death. A critically acclaimed Taylor dancer from 2010 to 2019, Mr. Novak earned a nomination for the Clive Barnes Foundation Dance Award for his debut season. He performed in 50 Taylor dances in all, as well as in several works by Taylorcommissioned choreographers. Under Mr. Novak’s direction, the Paul Taylor Dance Company continues to be one of the world’s premier modern dance companies,

with a robust domestic and international touring program, dynamic online presence, and ever-expanding repertory that includes the vast Taylor canon, important historical masterpieces, and commissioned works by 21st Century choreographers. The New York Times hailed his inaugural season as Artistic Director as “groundbreaking and inspirational.” In 2019, he partnered with Orchestra of St. Luke’s Bach Festival, curating the first presentation in a single engagement of all six of Paul Taylor’s iconic dances set to music by Bach. In memory of Mr. Taylor, he launched “The Celebration Tour,” a multi-year international touring retrospective of the Taylor repertoire.

Raised in Rolling Meadows, Illinois, Mr. Novak is an alumnus of Columbia University’s School of General Studies, where he received his BA in Dance Magna Cum Laude with Departmental Honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He was the Keynote Speaker for the Class of 2020.

LAUREN LOVETTE (Resident Choreographer) personifies the intertwining of dance and choreography, moving seamlessly from one to the other. Her work has been commissioned and performed by leading dance companies and festivals, including the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the Vail International Dance Festival, American Ballet Theatre Studio Company, the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Nevada Ballet Theatre, as well as a self-produced evening entirely of her own work in which she also danced, Why It Matters. She began creating dance as a ballet student for a 2007 choreographic workshop showing at the School of American Ballet (SAB). Another ballet, for the 2008 workshop, was soon followed by her being selected to create a work for the 2009 New York Choreographic Institute. In 2016, Lovette, then a relatively new principal dancer, was asked to choreograph her first piece, that then premiered at the New York City Ballet Fall Fashion Gala. In 2017, she choreographed for the Vail International Dance Festival, the NYCB Fall Season Gala, and the American Ballet Theatre Studio Company. She was awarded the Virginia B. Toulmin Fellowship at the Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University in fall of 2018, and a year later created a work for the 2019 Fall Fashion Gala at NYCB. Her work at NYCB is noteworthy, forging a path for other female choreographers in an area of dance that has notably been predominantly male.

Born in Thousand Oaks, CA, Lovette began studying ballet at the age of 11 at the Cary Ballet Conservatory in Cary, NC. She enrolled at SAB as a full-time student in 2006. In October 2009, Ms. Lovette became an apprentice with NYCB and joined the Company as a member of the corps de ballet in September 2010. Promoted to soloist in February 2013 and to principal dancer in June 2015, she stepped down from her position at the company in 2021 to embark on a career devoted to dance and choreography in more equal measure. Ms. Lovette received the Clive Barnes Award for dance in December 2012 and was the 2012-2013 recipient of the Janice Levin Award.

MICHELLE MANZANALES (Choreographer) is a choreographer and dedicated dance educator originally from Houston, TX. In addition to Paul Taylor Dance Company, her current choreographic commissions include new works for Ballet Hispánico, Oregon Ballet Theater, Contemporary West Dance Theatre’s ARTSWORK, and Montclair State University. Additional works by Manzanales include If by Chance... (2019) which was created for and performed at the

Jerome Robbins Dance Division at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts 75th Anniversary Gala; Con Brazos Abiertos (2017) which premiered at The Joyce Theater, was presented at New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival, and has since toured worldwide; Paloma Querida, her homage to Frida Kahlo; and Sugar in the Raw, created for Luna Negra Dance Theater. Manzanales is the cofounder of the Latinx Dance Educators Alliance. Before taking her current leadership role of Director of the Ballet Hispánico School of Dance in 2016, she led the organization’s professional company as Rehearsal Director & Artistic Associate for seven seasons.

PETER CHU (Choreographer) was born in the Bronx, NY, and raised in Cocoa Beach, FL, where he began training as a competitive gymnast and later furthered his artistry at Dussich Dance Studio.

After graduating from The Juilliard School, he performed with BJM Danse, EZdanza, Aszure Barton & Artists, Kidd Pivot, and in Céline Dion’s Las Vegas spectacular, A New Day. In 2008, he formed a Las Vegas project based dance company, chuthis., which showcases his work and that of his collaborators. Mr. Chu has created works for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Staatstheater Augsburg, Charlotte Ballet II, Orlando Ballet Theatre, Hubbard Street 2, Giordano Dance Chicago, SYTYCD, Naomi Stikeman’s Çaturn, Houston MET Dance, New Dialect, SALT Contemporary Dance, HSPro, and The Juilliard School, among others. This year, Mr. Chu will be premiering new works for Giordano Dance Chicago, Gibney Dance Company, and a creation for his own company, chuthis.

BETTIE DE JONG (Rehearsal Director) was born in Sumatra, Indonesia, and in 1946 moved to Holland, where she continued her early training in dance and mime. Her first professional engagement was with the Netherlands Pantomime Company. After coming to New York City to study at the Martha Graham School, she performed with the Graham Company, the Pearl Lang Company, John Butler and Lucas Hoving, and was seen on CBS-TV with Rudolf Nureyev in a duet choreographed by Paul Taylor. Ms. de Jong joined the Taylor Company in 1962. Noted for her strong stage presence and long lines, she was Mr. Taylor's favorite dancing partner and, as Rehearsal Director, was his surrogate in the studio and on tour for more than 40 years. She received the 2019 Balasarawati/Joy Anne Dewey Beinecke Endowed Chair for Distinguished Teaching Award from the American Dance Festival for her substantial contributions to the sustainment of the Taylor legacy.

ANDY LEBEAU (Rehearsal Director) was raised in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He graduated from the Boston Conservatory of Music with a B.F.A. in dance in 1993. He then moved to New York City to be one of the original members of Taylor 2. Two years later, he was invited to join Paul Taylor Dance Company. After retiring from the stage in 2005, Mr. LeBeau served as Director of The Taylor School, then Director of Taylor 2, Company Manager, and Rehearsal Assistant to Mr. Taylor. He works closely with Mr. Novak and Ms. de Jong.

CATHY MCCANN (Rehearsal Director) was a member of the Paul Taylor Dance Company for 13 years. Among the 18 dances Mr. Taylor made on her were Mercuric Tidings, Brandenburgs, Musical Offering, and Sunset. She was featured in five Taylor television specials, including the 1991 Emmy Award-winning Speaking in Tongues. In 1991, Mikhail Baryshnikov invited her to join the White Oak Dance Project, where she performed works by Mark Morris and Lar Lubovitch. Ms. McCann has staged Taylor dances for American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, San Francisco Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet and Washington Ballet, among others, and her own choreography has been presented at New York City Center. She has been a faculty member of Adelphi University, Barnard College, and Hofstra University, and has taught at the American Dance Festival and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. She was appointed Director of Taylor 2 by Mr. Novak in March 2019. She became Rehearsal Director in March 2020.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists.
