Made in collaboration with the dancers virtually and during an in-person COVIDsafe residency with the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Governors Island Arts Center, this new work, set to music by Ted Hearne, is the second in the company’s series of site-specific works.

The first iteration of this series was performed via livestream at the Annenberg Center in Philadelphia on October 15, 2020. The piece re-imagines and manipulates material from past works including: "Heaven on One's Head" (2014), "Sequenzas in Quadrilles" (2016), "Solo for Victor" (2016), and "Gustave Le Gray, No. 2" (2020), taking online audiences on a choreographic journey throughout the empty Joyce Theater.

Program Note: “Finally Unfinished: Part 2" is a digital curio cabinet dedicated to the rich history between Pam Tanowitz Dance and The Joyce Theater, delving into its near decade-long relationship. Audience members are invited to step inside Tanowitz’s creative process with an interactive companion piece, to be viewed either before or after the performance. Created in collaboration with filmmaker and designer Jeremy Jacob, this digital scrapbook of inspiration weaves together the images, words, and videos that inspire Tanowitz’s work, giving audiences a rare perspective of dance from start to UNFINISHED. The original recording of Pam Tanowitz Dance seen in this trailer was produced by the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Pennsylvania. The performance took place on October 15, 2020 in the Center’s Harold L. Zellerbach Theatre.

There will be no pause between pieces.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Pam Tanowitz Dance unites critically-acclaimed choreographer Pam Tanowitz with a company of world-class dance artists and renowned collaborators in all disciplines.

As a choreographer, Pam Tanowitz is known for her abstract treatment of classical and contemporary movement ideas. The work is deeply rooted in formal structures, manipulated and abstracted

by Tanowitz until the viewer sees through to the heart of the dance.

The juxtapositions and tensions that Tanowitz creates draws upon the virtuosic skill, musical dexterity, and artistic integrity of the PTD dancers.

Since the company was founded in 2002, Pam Tanowitz Dance has received commissions and/or residencies at Fisher Center at Bard’s Summerscape Festival, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Chicago Dancing Festival, Danspace Project, Dance Theater Workshop, Guggenheim Museum’s Works & Process, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Joyce Theater, Lincoln Center “Out of Doors”, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, MANCC, New York Live Arts, and Center for the Performing Arts at UCLA. Her recent work Four Quartets was included in The Guardian’s “Best Dance Shows of 2019”, ArtsDesk’s “Best of 2019”, and London’s Sunday Times “Best Dance of the Decade”. Pam Tanowitz Dance was selected by The New York Times “Best of Dance” 2013-2020.

ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHER PAM TANOWITZ (Choreographer) is a critically acclaimed New York-based choreographer and founder of Pam Tanowitz Dance.

Her 2017 dance “New Work for Goldberg Variations”, created for her company in collaboration with pianist Simone Dinnerstein, was called a “rare achievement” (The New York Times). Her 2018 creation Four Quartets, inspired by T.S. Eliot’s literary masterpiece and set to music by Kaija Saariaho, was called "the greatest creation of dance theater so far this century” (The New York Times).

Tanowitz was recently named a 2020 Doris Duke Artist. She is currently the first-ever choreographer in residence at The Fisher Center at Bard in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. Other honors include a 2019 Herb Alpert Award, 2017 BAC Cage Cunningham Fellowship, 2016 and 2009 Bessie awards, 2010 Foundation for Contemporary Arts award, 2011 Guggenheim Fellowship, Hodder Fellowship, CBA Fellowship at NYU, BAC Cage Cunningham Fellowship, and a New York City Center Choreography Fellowship. Her work was included in The New York Times “Best of Dance” 2013-2020.

She has created for New York City Ballet, Martha Graham Dance Company, Paul Taylor American Modern Dance, The Royal Ballet, The Kennedy Center’s Ballet Across America, Juilliard Dance, Ballet Austin, and New York Theatre Ballet. Other commissions include Barbican Centre, The Joyce Theater, Bard Summerscape, Vail International Dance Festival, New York Live Arts, Guggenheim Works & Process, Duke Performances, Peak Performances, and ICA/Boston.

Originally from New Rochelle, New York, Tanowitz holds degrees from The Ohio State University and Sarah Lawrence College, and is a visiting guest artist at Rutgers University.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY JASON COLLINS (Dancer, Creative Producer) is originally from Defreestville, New York and has been performing with Pam Tanowitz Dance since 2013. He has assisted Tanowitz with creations for Dance Theater of Harlem, Miami City Ballet, New York City Ballet, and Royal Ballet and has taught repertory workshops at CalArts, Montclair State University, and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. He has also performed with the Merce Cunningham Trust, The Bang Group, Crossman Dans(c)e, Ryan McNamara, and Danielle Russo, amongst others.

In addition to his work as a performer, Collins began managing PTD in 2017 before becoming Creative Producer for Tanowitz and the company in 2019. He has previously associate produced works

by Big Dance Theater and Pavel Zuštiak and served as a project assistant with BAM’s DanceMotion USA from 2015-2017. He is also a co-founder of HEWMAN, a collective that reimagines the traditional model of a dance company run by one choreographer by engaging individual artists with distinct voices to collaborate as equals in the creative process. Collins studied at Walnut Hill School for the Arts and holds a BFA from The Juilliard School.

BRITTANY ENGEL-ADAMS (Dancer) is a dancer, choreographer, and teacher living in New York. She has danced with Yvonne Rainer, Okwui Okpokwasili, Pat Catterson, Pam Tanowitz, Netta Yerushalmy, Emily Coates, Donna Uchizono, Annie–B Parson, Ailey ll, and more.

Brittany performed across disciplines for projects like Sleep No More (immersive theater); The White Album (multimedia theater) directed

by Lars Jan; 10019 (site-specific performance) choreographed by Naomi Goldberg Haas. She is a co-star in the HBO television series Boardwalk Empire and is featured in the film Chiraq directed by Spike Lee. Her choreographic work has been presented at The Guggenheim Museum, Victoria J. Mastrobuono Theater, Symphony Space, PS261, and Kumble Theater. WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY CHRISTINE FLORES (Dancer) is originally from Toronto, Ontario and has been working with Pam Tanowitz since 2016. She graduated from New World School of the Arts (Miami) in 2015 with a BFA in Dance and received additional training at Springboard Danse Montreal, the Contemporary Program at Jacob's Pillow, and Cunningham Fellowship workshops.

She has worked with Peter Chu, Caleb Teicher & Company, Crossman Dans(c)e, Isodoc Dance Group, Emma Portner, the Chase Brock Experience, and Tania Perez Salas Dance Company (Mexico).

Christine is currently based out of New York City and also performing with Company XIV, Danielle Russo Performance Project, NVA & Guests, and Shinsa Collective. She has taught repertory workshops for Tanowitz at NYU Tisch and ADF Cleveland, as well as across Canada at Fresh Dance Intensive.

ZACHARY GONDER (Dancer) was born in Grayslake, IL, a small suburb north of Chicago. At the age of five, he started dancing at The Dance Connection, a local studio. He then trained at the Chicago Academy for the Arts High School under the tutelage of renowned choreographer Randy Duncan. He graduated from Juilliard in 2018, where he performed works by Austin McCormick, José Limón, Aszure Barton, Pam Tanowitz, Richard Alston, Gustavo Ramirez Sansano, and Crystal Pite. Zachary has worked for BODYTRAFFIC in Los Angeles as well as the Barton Sisters’ Axis Connect Program. He currently dances for Pam Tanowitz Dance, Brian Brooks Moving Company, and Zvi Dance.

LINDSEY JONES (Dancer) is a Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist. She has been dancing and working with Pam Tanowitz Dance since 2013, among other dance companies and projects. She is currently studying Traditional Herbalism at Arbor Vitae and works as a gardener for Edible Petals.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY VICTOR LOZANO (Dancer) has been a member of Pam Tanowitz Dance since 2016. His other credits include Dance Heginbotham, Brian Brooks Dance, Madboots Dance, Merce Cunningham Trust (“Night of 100 Solos” UCLA), Ryan McNamara (Boffo Fire Island Performance Festival), and Brendan Fernandes (The Noguchi Museum).

Lozano is a M.A. candidate in Performance Studies at New York University and holds a B.F.A. in Dance from The Juilliard School. He is a recipient of the Juilliard Career Advancement Fellowship (20162018) and the Jacob’s Pillow Ann and Weston Hicks Choreography Fellowship (2019). He is originally from Houston, Texas, where he trained at the Houston Ballet, Houston Metropolitan Dance Center, and Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.

MELISSA TOOGOOD (Dancer, Artistic Associate, Rehearsal Director) is a Bessie Award winning performer. She is both Dancer and Rehearsal Director for Pam Tanowitz Dance and has assisted Tanowitz on numerous creations including works for Ballet Austin, Martha Graham Dance Company, The Juilliard School, Paul Taylor American Modern Dance, Vail Dance Festival, and others.

Melissa was a member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.

She has taught Cunningham Technique internationally since 2007, is a 2013 & 2015 Merce Cunningham Fellow, and is an official Stager for the Merce Cunningham Trust. She has performed with Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion, Kimberly Bartosik, Wally Cardona, Rosie Herrera Dance Theater, Rashaun Mitchell + Silas Riener, Miro Dance Theater, Stephen Petronio Company, Sally Silvers, Christopher Williams, The Bang Group: Tap Lab, and many others.

Melissa is a native of Sydney, Australia and holds a BFA in Dance Performance from New World School of the Arts, Miami, FL.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international

companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through offsite presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park.

To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists.
