ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Waves explores the various ways in which gestures suggest bodily experiences by expanding the research at the heart of my previous pieces.

Movement on Movement (2013) was focused on gestures that explain or comment other movements. Removing (2015) transformed the perception of goal-oriented actions such as hitting, avoiding, throwing or grabbing, by preventing the audience to recognize these goals. For example, the dancers aimed at imaginary objects or interrupted their actions before they were completed, thus allowing the spectator to experience aspects of the action that would remain unnoticed if its goal would have been identified. Faits et gestes (2016) continued these experiments and added an exploration of the ways in which a gesture can recall the feeling of executing a movement: dancers created gestures that expressed their experience when executing another movement. All these projects are rooted in the intuition that a gesture that explains or suggests a movement can often communicate better what is at stake in this movement. In this piece, I would like to pursue and expand this exploration of the ways in which a movement can refer to another movement: symbols, hints, suggestions, schemata, sketches, comments, explanations, experiential correspondences…

Complex experiences can be associated with bodily movements and physical attitudes. The gestures on which we are working are always incomplete, they point to something beyond themselves, and I have the feeling that this incompleteness can allow them to recall these complex experiences associated with movements.

A sudden change of direction, a shift in the gaze of the performer, the effort to divert the momentum from a previous moment or to maintain one’s balance can be used as supports to project complex physical and psychological memories. I do not mean that the spectator will be reminded of a specific episode of his life, but that the specific character of the gestures created by referring to another movement can activate his own bodily memory with all its physical and psychological ramifications. The incompleteness of the gestures thus aims to set in motion the physical history of the viewer.

WHO'S NOÉ SOULIER?

NOÉ SOULIER has developed a distinctive choreographic language nourished by the history of dance, philosophy, and a constant dialogue with other artistic disciplines. Born in Paris in 1987, he trained at the CNSMD in Paris, the National Ballet School of Canada, and P.A.R.T.S., he also holds a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the Sorbonne. From his earliest works, he has sought to revisit classical, modern, and postmodern legacies in order to construct a language of his own. His choreographic research is rooted in the exploration of practical goals — striking, avoiding, catching, throwing — which orient the body’s energy. By displacing them toward absent or imaginary objects, he invents a dance in which gestures generate variations in intensity and tension, offering spectators an experience that is both kinesthetic and affective. This approach unfolds in works such as Little Perceptions (2010), Faits et gestes (2016), The Waves (2018), and Close Up (2024).

Alongside this choreographic research, he has developed theoretical inquiry through performances (Movement on Movement, 2013) and publications (Actions, mouvements et gestes, 2016), aiming to transform the way movement is perceived, overturning hierarchies between body and thought, practice and theory. Noé Soulier deliberately blurs disciplinary boundaries. In Performing Art (2017), he challenged the traditional relationship between dance and the museum by transforming the installation of a collection into choreography. With Close Up, he entrusted performers with the power to compose their own filmed image, reversing established hierarchies of gaze. His collaborations with artists such as Tarek Atoui, Thea Djordjadze, and Karl Naegelen extend this desire for porosity across artistic fields. Whether constructing a sculpture live on stage or generating sonic environments, the boundary between choreography, music, and the visual arts becomes porous.

His works have been presented at major venues and international festivals, from Paris to New York, London, Berlin, Tokyo, Taipei, Brussels, and Venice. In parallel, he has choreographed for numerous companies including the Nederlands Dans Theater, the Trisha Brown Dance Company, the Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon, L.A. Dance Project, and the Ballet de Lorraine. Since 2020, he has been Director of the CNDC – Angers, a unique institution bringing together a choreographic creation center, a higher education program, and an international dance season. His vision of art as an expansion of the range of our experiences — perceptively, affectively, and politically — informs both his choreographic writing and the project he is developing for this institution. He is the winner of the Danse Élargie competition (2010), was named Choreographic Personality of the Year by the French Critics’ Association (2024), and received the SACD Choreography Prize (2025).

ABOUT ICTUS

ICTUS is a contemporary music ensemble based in Brussels, born in 1994 as the live band for Rosas dance company. Founded at a time when ensembles were considered mini-orchestras made up of virtuoso soloists, Ictus emerges today as a collective of creative musicians dedicated to experimental music in its broadest sense: written music, sound art, improvisation and electronics. Ictus is an artistdriven structure consisting of some 30 people spread over three generations. It has become a regular partner of numerous curators, choreographers and large-scale groups, such as Brussels Philharmonic and Collegium Vocale Gent, while developing its own projects in a variety of formats. Its work is available on a Youtube channel as well as a rich web archive, ictus.be, with almost 300 documented projects. Ictus is conducting an advanced Master’s programme for young musicians with the School of Arts Gent.

Last release: Einstein on the Beach by Philip Glass, a double CD on the Brussels label Vlek (also available for streaming on Bandcamp).

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION

The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 500 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION

VISION STATEMENT

The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.

We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

To achieve this, we will:

• Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives;

• Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth;

• Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility;

• Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.

With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.

We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.

We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.

It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
