OUR LEGACY
"The timeless themes, emotions, and conditions that emerge are key to Goya's enduring relevance.
Like the world in which Goya lived, our own is rent by ignorance and fear and ripped apart by conflict and suffering that have taken on new dimensions in the face of a pandemic.
Now and into the future, Goya's art will continue to engage those who seek the essence of human being."
- Mark McDonald, Curator (The Metrpopolitan Museum of Art) Excerpt from Goya's Graphic Imagination
ABOUT THE COMPANY
The mission of NOCHE FLAMENCA is to create a diverse theatrical body of performance through song, music, and dance that expresses a rigorous, spellbinding aesthetic in the form of flamenco; one that exceeds the highest artistic expectations. The company strives to captivate its audiences through its live performances and to evoke in them the vivid and expansive sea of passion and emotion that is flamenco. Through its educational outreach and residency programs, the company seeks to educate and enlighten persons of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds regarding the authentic form of flamenco – a form born of ancestral cultural repression and racial expulsion.
Under the direction and choreography of Martín Santangelo, the award-winning Noche Flamenca is recognized as one of the world’s premier touring companies. Formed in 1993 by Santangelo and his award-winning wife, Soledad Barrio, the company has toured throughout the globe, including regular seasons in New York City, and performances in North and South America, Europe, and Australia. Hailed by critics everywhere for its transcendent and deeply emotional performances, Noche Flamenca is recognized as the most authentic flamenco touring company in the field today. Santangelo has successfully brought to the stage the essence, purity, and integrity of one of the world's most complex and mysterious art forms. All aspects of flamenco – dance, song, and music – are interrelated and given equal weight, creating a true communal spirit within the company - the very heart and soul of flamenco. Noche Flamenca has been recognized with awards from the National Dance Project, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, the MAP Fund, and the Lucille Lortel Award for Special Theatrical Experience, among many others.
Noche Flamenca would like to thank its funders: The National Endowment for the Arts, the Howard Gilman Foundation, The Harkness Foundation for Dance, The Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, and The Shubert Foundation. Noche Flamenca’s New York season is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. The company also extends its special thanks to: Wendy vanden Heuvel, Etta Brandman, Mark McDonald, Aurora Santangelo, Gabriela and Stella (for their patience), Annatina Miescher, Mary Frank, Mark McDonald, The Fundación de Goya en Aragón, Anne Leonard, Lisa Dorin, Frances McDormand, Joel Coen, Eric Cocco, Sharon Levy, Lee Breuer, Martin Weschler, The Joyce Theater, Phil Esparza and Luis Valdez of El Teatro Campesino, Jackie Shue, and our many friends and individual donors.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION
The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 500 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.
It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
