ABOUT LONDON CITY BALLET LONDON CITY BALLET is a touring company of international dancers presenting engaging stories through dance to audiences across the world. Alongside creating newly commissioned work by upcoming, plus established choreographers, their emphasis is on resurrecting heritage works from the classical canon that may no longer be in the mainstream repertoire. The company strive to present engaging and entertaining works whilst ensuring the history which came before it is not forgotten. The original iteration of the company closed in the 1990’s having formerly been the resident company of Sadler’s Wells, and internationally recognised as one of the world’s leading dance collectives, with Diana, Princess of Wales as the Royal Patron. It was sensitively reformed in 2023 after a 30-year hiatus, under the Artistic Direction of Christopher Marney. In under three years the company has engaged a vast public across Europe, Asia and the US, picking up the UK Critics Circle ‘Best Independent Company’ award at the National Dance Awards, for two successive years. To date, the repertoire of ballets on offer showcase leading lights of the international dance scene including Kenneth MacMillan, George Balanchine, Liam Scarlett, Arielle Smith and Alexei Ratmansky.
WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY? CHRISTOPHER MARNEY (Artistic Director) From growing up watching London City Ballet in the early 1990s, the company was an early inspiration for Chris' own career as a choreographer, teacher, and artistic director. Formerly as Director of the Joffrey Ballet Studio Company (Chicago) and Central School of Ballet (London), Chris has had the pleasure of programming tours internationally, curating, and commissioning diverse programmes. These have included the repertoire of such choreographers as George Balanchine, Kenneth MacMillan, Liam Scarlett, Frederick Ashton, Jasmin Vardimon, Matthew Bourne, and Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. As a dancer, Chris worked internationally for the Balletboyz, Gothenburg Ballet, Ballet Biarritz, Bern Ballet, Michael Clark Company, and Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, where he danced many principal roles around the world. The Critics' Circle National Dance Awards nominated him for Outstanding Performance in Modern Dance two years running, as well as including him in Dance Europe’s Outstanding Male Dancer 2013 list. Chris retired from performing in 2017 with Ivan Putrov’s Men in Motion, where he danced the Faun in Nijinsky’s L’Après-midi d’un Faune. As a choreographer, he has created works for Ballet Black, English National Ballet’s Emerging Dancer, The Four Seasons for the Joffrey Ballet Studio Company, Nutcracker at the British Museum, Eve at Sadler's Wells, and Lady Macbeth at the New National Theatre in Tokyo. His London West End credits include choreography for McQueen The Play at the Theatre Royal Haymarket and Tell Me on a Sunday at the St. James Theatre. He was named associate artist of the UK Foundation for Dance and holds a Master's degree in Choreography awarded by the University of Kent. Chris remains committed to reviving less familiar but important works, shining a new light on those choreographies and providing access through extensive touring. JOHN NEUMEIER (Choreographer, "Ghost Light") was born in 1939 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he received his first dance training. He continued his dance studies in Chicago as well as at Marquette University in Milwaukee where he created his first choreographic works. After further ballet study both in Copenhagen and at The Royal Ballet School in London, John Cranko invited him in 1963 to join Stuttgart Ballet, where he progressed to soloist and continued his choreographic development. In 1969, Ulrich Erfurth appointed Mr. Neumeier Director of Ballet Frankfurt, where he soon caused a sensation with his new interpretations of such well-known ballets as The Nutcracker and Romeo and Juliet. In 1973, August Everding invited him to become Director and Chief Choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet. Under his direction, The Hamburg Ballet became one of the leading ballet companies on the German dance scene and soon received international recognition. As a choreographer, Mr. Neumeier has continually focused on the preservation of ballet tradition, while giving his works a modern dramatic framework. In 1975, John Neumeier conceived the Hamburg Ballet Days as a climax and end to each season. In 1978, he founded the School of the Hamburg Ballet. In 1989 the school, together with the company, moved into its own "Ballettzentrum" (ballet center) provided by the city of Hamburg. He established the John Neumeier Foundation in February 2006 with the aim of preserving and eventually making available to the public his collection of dance and ballet-related objects. The Foundation will maintain and secure his repertoire and related materials for the city of Hamburg. In 2011, John Neumeier founded Germany's National Youth Ballet. American choreographer, GLEN TETLEY (1926-2007) (Choreographer, "Firebird") was a leading choreographer of the twentieth century. Tetley created over 60 works for major companies including American Ballet Theater, The Australian Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada, Norwegian National Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, The Royal Ballet and Stuttgart Ballet. The early works he choreographed for Netherlands Dance Theater and Ballet Rambert have been a major influence in the artistic development of both companies. From 1961-69, he directed his own company. He was co–director
of Netherlands Dance Theater and succeeded John Cranko as Director of Stuttgart Ballet. From 1987-89, Tetley served as Artistic Associate of The National Ballet of Canada. Tetley studied contemporary dance in New York City with Hanya Holm and Martha Graham, and trained in classical dance with Margaret Craske, Antony Tudor and at the School of American Ballet. He performed in the companies of Hanya Holm Martha Graham, Jose Limon, among other companies, was a founding member of Joffrey Ballet and became a principal soloist of American Ballet Theater. He received the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award, among other awards and in 1997, was honoured with the Knight of Royal Norwegian Order of Merit for his work with the Norwegian National Ballet. In 1995 Tetley was the subject of Michael Blackwood's documentary film. He died in 2007. JEROME ROBBINS (1918-1998) (Choreographer, "Quiet City") was one of the greatest choreographers of his time. He created more than sixty ballets, performed by prestigious ballet companies around the world. He also choreographed and directed numerous Broadway shows, the most famous of which include On the Town, The King and I, Gypsy, Funny Girl, Fiddler on the Roof, and West Side Story. The 1962 film version of West Side Story earned him two Academy Awards, for direction and choreography. In addition, he won five Tony Awards, several Donaldson Awards and an Emmy Award. In 1981, he received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors and was named a Chevalier of the French Ordre National de la Légion d’honneur. ASHLEY PAGE (Choreographer, "Mephisto Waltz") trained at the Royal Ballet School, entering The Royal Ballet company at Covent Garden in 1975 and subsequently becoming a Principal dancer. He choreographed his first work in 1984 (A Broken Set of Rules for The Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House) and subsequently created many works for The Royal Ballet and other companies in the UK and internationally, developing a reputation for often daring collaborations with designers and composers. His ballet Fearful Symmetries won both a Time Out Dance Award and an Olivier Award in 1994/95, and his dance/theatre piece Room of Cooks was nominated for an Olivier Award in 1999. Both works were commissioned by The Royal Ballet. After 27 years with The Royal Ballet he became Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet in 2002, re-energising and redeveloping them into an internationally renowned modern ballet company over a 10 year period, winning numerous awards and attracting critical acclaim and new audiences. Since 2012, he has been freelancing as a choreographer, opera director and artistic advisor, working with many ballet, contemporary dance and opera companies in the UK and internationally. TASHA CHU (Choreographer, "Soon") is a London based dancer and choreographer of Anglo-Chinese heritage. She graduated from Central School of Ballet in 2018 and made her professional debut as a dancer with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures. Tasha holds a Masters Degree in Choreography awarded by the University of Kent. Her work has featured in collaborations on digital platforms and on stage, including with New Adventures, Welsh National Opera, Ballet Central and Royal College of Music. ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation (“The Joyce,” Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a non-profit organization, has served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, the theater was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. As one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance, The Joyce Theater has provided a performance home for over 500 U.S.-based and international dance companies. Beyond the stage, The Joyce supports dance artists through longstanding commissioning and creative residency programs and Joyce Theater Productions, helping to bring artist-driven projects to life from early development to the premiere and touring. In addition, The Joyce owns and operates the New York Center for Creativity & Dance in Manhattan’s East Village, providing affordable rehearsal and workspace for dance artists. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from The Joyce’s Dance Education Program for Schools, audiences gain insight into the creative process through Curtain Chats, and Family Matinees introduce children to dance and offer opportunities to meet the artists. The Joyce Theater’s annual season of 46 to 48 weeks of dance includes more than 300 performances featuring a broad range of dance forms, styles, and traditions for audiences of over 120,000. ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION VISION STATEMENT
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. To achieve this, we will: • Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives; • Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth;
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
• Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility;
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.
• Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.
It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.
