INDIGENOUS ENTERPRISE SEPTEMBER 16 - 21, 2025

Season Sponsor:

Welcome to The Joyce Theater’s Fall ‘25/Winter ‘26 Season!

We are excited to kick off the season with the long-awaited return of Indigenous Enterprise, following their Joyce debut in 2021. Known for blending authentic powwow dance styles with contemporary performance and animated storytelling, the acclaimed Native American collective brings Still Here, a deeply personal performance that celebrates Indigenous heritage, resilience, and identity.

There is no shortage of landmark anniversaries in this upcoming season. BalletX commemorates 20 years of bold innovation with a retrospective of audience favorites and a new work created in collaboration with Philadelphia jazz musicians. Ringing in over 30 years of boundary-pushing artistry, Complexions Contemporary Ballet continues to inspire profound appreciation for the limitless possibilities of movement. The Limón Dance Company launches its 80th anniversary season with a bold, intergenerational program that concludes with a world premiere work by Mexican choreographer Diego Vega Solorza.

Exciting combinations of classical and contemporary dance grace the stage. The Arpino Dance Festival offers a rare tribute to one of American ballet’s most transformative figures, former artistic director and co-founder of The Joffrey Ballet Gerald Arpino, with an exceptional cast of artists that highlights his signature works. Later in winter, international ballet star Daniil Simkin presents Sons of Echo, a powerful evening that explores identity, vulnerability, and strength through innovative works by Lucinda Childs, Drew Jacoby, Tiler Peck, and Anne Plamondon. Celebrating street dance from across the globe, Rennie Harris Puremovement American Street Dance Theater returns with a new work that pays tribute to the rich legacy of Street Dance across the U.S., featuring a live hip hop orchestra and an acclaimed lineup of guest artists—including House of Jit, Creation Global, Akim Funk Buddha, DJ Razor Ramon, and Ayodele Casel. The France-based DYPTIK makes its New York debut with Le Grand Bal, a raw, high-octane fusion of hip hop, theater, and contemporary dance. In collaboration with Grammy Award-winning pianist and composer Arturo O’Farrill, Ephrat Asherie Dance captures an expansive narrative experience through Afro-diasporic dance and live music in Shadow Cities. Back for an encore run, Compagnie Hervé KOUBI takes us on a poetic journey with What The Day Owes To The Night, a gravity-defying work blending street dance, capoeira, and contemporary movement.

This winter, we invite you to enjoy the holidays with your loved ones at our Chelsea home. Caleb Teicher and their circle of trusted collaborators don their gay apparel once more in A Very SW!NG OUT Holiday, bringing the revelry and festive cheer of Lindy Hop and social dance, complete with a post-show onstage jam session with the audience. MOMIX takes audiences through the looking glass and down the rabbit hole into the New Year in ALICE, the company’s mind-bending take on the classic Alice in Wonderland Percussive dance artists continue expanding the rhythmic potential of sound at The Joyce. Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca brings a powerful new work blending the searing intensity of flamenco with the company’s signature theatricality and emotional depth. Trinity Irish Dance Company celebrates 35 years of boundary-pushing performance with a vibrant program melding of Irish traditions and ever-evolving American innovation.

GALLIM, led by acclaimed choreographer Andrea Miller, unveils the world premiere of MOTHER, a hauntingly beautiful work created in collaboration with visionary artists that showcases the company’s signature fierce physicality. A meditation on mass, weight, space, and speed, Ballet Preljocaj takes the stage with Gravity, creating a kinetic world of rich movement language that speaks to the forces that shape our everyday lives.

A pair of companies that call The Joyce their New York City home will make return appearances towards the end of the season. The Havana-based Malpaso Dance Company continues to nurture new choreographic voices and showcase its versatility with the performance of Martha Graham’s Dark Meadow Suite, becoming the first Cuban dance company to ever stage the iconic choreographer’s work. Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE brings the season to a powerful close, presenting two programs of spiritually charged contemporary dance rooted in African and Afro-Cuban movement traditions.

We are honored to have these 18 artistic engagements this season that celebrate landmark anniversaries, introduce new commissions, and honor culturally rooted forms that continue to shape the future of dance. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

Sincerely,

Animation STUDIO NOVELLA

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Still Here is a groundbreaking multimedia production by Indigenous Enterprise, seamlessly blending championship powwow dance, cinematic animation by Studio Novella, live music, and spoken storytelling. The performance celebrates the resilience and enduring spirit of Indigenous peoples—honoring traditions once banned and persecuted, and reclaiming them on one of the world’s most prestigious stages.

At the heart of the show is an original animated film following the journey of a young boy named Nataanii, who dreams of learning to sing powwow songs. Guided by his grandfather, Johnny, Nataanii embarks on a path of cultural discovery, learning the deeper meaning of the drum and the life lessons it carries—wisdom that will stay with him forever.

This powerful narrative is interwoven with performances from champion powwow dancers representing tribes across the United States and Canada. Through the fusion of movement, music, and storytelling, Still Here becomes both a tribute to our ancestors and a bold declaration of our living presence: our culture is thriving, our voices are strong, and we are still here.

ABOUT INDIGENOUS ENTERPRISE

Founded in 2015 in Phoenix, Arizona, INDIGENOUS ENTERPRISE is an award-winning dance company of champion powwow dancers, singers, and storytellers from tribes across the United States and Canada. Known for their vibrant regalia, powerful choreography, and commitment to cultural authenticity, the ensemble has performed on some of the world’s most iconic stages, including the Super Bowl, Sydney Opera House, Lincoln Center, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the NBA Finals.

Their work not only celebrates traditions that were once banned, but reclaims them in spaces where Indigenous culture has historically been excluded—bringing stories of resilience, pride, and intergenerational strength to audiences worldwide. Every step they dance, every song they sing, and every story they share is a living tribute to their ancestors and a powerful reminder that Indigenous peoples are not only still here—they are thriving.

A NOTE FROM INDIGENOUS ENTERPRISE

Thank you for standing with us over the past ten years. This show is the result of our hearts, our souls, and countless hours of work and seeing our team unite to bring this vision to life is something we will never take for granted. Not long ago, our ancestors were arrested and punished for practicing the very traditions we share here tonight. My grandfather, Kenneth White, was sent to a boarding school where he was forbidden to speak Navajo or live our culture. Today, in 2025, we stand on the stage of The Joyce Theater, celebrated for what colonizers once tried to erase. That fills our hearts with pride and joy.

Happy ten-year anniversary to Indigenous Enterprise. Here’s to the future, to our mission, and to showing the world that Indigenous people are never going away.

We are still here.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Indigenous Enterprise extends heartfelt thanks to The Joyce Theater, our community supporters, the Indigenous elders whose guidance shapes our journey, and the youth who inspire us to keep dancing. This performance is dedicated to all Indigenous peoples—past, present, and future—who continue to keep our culture alive.

We want to thank Studio Novella, which was founded by director Stephanie Gumpel and is an award-winning film and animation studio recognized for its poetic visual storytelling. A regular contributor to The Los Angeles Times and a presence across film and television, the studio first collaborated with Indigenous Enterprise in 2021 for the company’s debut at The Joyce Theater. Its work blends emotional depth, world-class storytelling, and striking imagery to uplift and inspire. We couldn’t have made this show without them.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION

The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 500 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.

We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.

We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.

It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
