Inspired by the spirit of animals, the choreographer incorporated animal Qigong and Taiji principles to explore how sound shapes space and connects dancers with their inner rhythms. This experience underscored the need to acknowledge our inner animalistic qualities to foster more compassionate interactions among humans.
The creation of Echoes of Sole and Animal was made possible with support from Andrew A. Davis and the Shelby Cullom Davis Charitable Fund and by Gibney Company’s Rising Voices of Contemporary Dance Fund, with generous support from Richard Feldman and The SHS Foundation, Virginia & Timothy Millhiser, Larry Keigwin, and Pamela van Zandt. "Three Dances (for prepared piano) John Cage" embraces the rhythmic intensity of John Cage's 1994-45 composition "Three Dances," exploring the intricate interplay between music and movement. Childs' signature postmodern minimalist precision and deep reverence for structured repetition take center stage in this stunning new work, exemplifying Childs' lifelong fascination with transdisciplinarity and formalism, harkening back to her Judson Dance Theater roots.
The creation of Three Dances (for prepared piano) John Cage was made possible by Gibney Company's Master Makers Initiative, with generous support from Joan & Jerry Lozinski, Virginia & Timothy Millhiser, Andrew A. Davis and the Shelby Cullom Davis Charitable Fund, Richard Feldman and The SHS Foundation, the Simons Foundation, Nurit & Rick Amdur, Deborah Goodman Davis, and Pamela van Zandt. This project was made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. We are grateful to the Simons Foundation for their support of Lucinda Childs’ participation in Open Interval, a unique program created in partnership with Gibney that brings together dancemakers and scientists to explore the intersection of art and science.

ABOUT GIBNEY
Founded by Gina Gibney in 1991, Gibney is a New York City-based performing arts and social justice organization that taps into the vast potential of movement, creativity, and performance to affect social change and personal transformation. Gibney deploys resources through three strategic and interwoven program areas: Gibney Center, a meeting ground for New York City’s artistic community comprising 23 studios and five performance spaces that provide critical space for training, rehearsal, professional development, performances, and convenings; Gibney Community programs that use movement to help address a range of social issues with a focus on gender-based violence and its prevention; and Gibney Company, its professional dance ensemble which performs annual seasons in New York City as well as tours to venues across the country and abroad. The Gibney organization supports movement-based artists in every aspect of their creative development: classes, residencies, low-cost rental space, entrepreneurial training and incubation, presentation opportunities, commissioning, and operating a professional dance company.
WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY
ARTISTIC LEADERSHIP
GINA GIBNEY (Founder/Artistic Director/CEO) (she/her) is a nationally recognized leader, entrepreneur, and advocate working at the intersection of dance, social action, and institutional innovation. As the Founder, Artistic Director, and CEO of Gibney, she has transformed a single studio into one of New York City’s most expansive and impactful arts organizations—an anchor institution that supports the creative process, builds community, and champions equity through movement. Trained as a choreographer, Gibney created work known for its formal clarity, emotional depth, and nuanced exploration of human relationships. Her choreography evolved over time, engaging questions of identity, connection, and the interplay between self and others. Presented widely in the U.S. and abroad, her work reflected the same values that shaped Gibney from its founding in 1991: collaboration, intentionality, and a deep engagement with community.
Under her leadership, Gibney has grown to encompass a professional dance company, two multidisciplinary arts centers with 23 studios, and a robust slate of programs linking the arts with social action. She is widely credited with creating vital space - both literal and metaphorical - for dance artists to thrive, while pioneering new models for creative development, civic engagement, and cultural leadership.
Gibney’s groundbreaking programs include Move to Move Beyond, an evidencebased initiative supporting survivors of gender-based violence; Moving Toward Justice, an incubator for artist-activists advancing social change; and the Dance in Process (DiP) Residency, a holistic model of support for mid-career choreographers. Each reflects her commitment to advancing equity and empowering artists as agents of change.
Named to the Vanity Fair Hall of Fame for “making art and taking action,” Gibney has received numerous honors. She has served as a Trustee of Dance/USA, where she
received the Ernie Award for changemaking leadership; is a founding board member of Dance/NYC; and currently serves on the boards of Dance/USA and Creative Capital. A sought-after speaker and panelist, she is known for her entrepreneurial vision and deep belief in an arts ecosystem driven by access, innovation, and impact.
GILBERT T. SMALL II (Gibney Company Director) (he/him) joined Gibney Company in 2020 as Curatorial Director of Training and Company Rehearsal Director and was promoted to Company Director in 2022. He received a Bachelor of Fine Art from SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Dance in 2009. While at Purchase, he studied abroad at Codarts in Rotterdam, an opportunity that shifted his perspective, pushing him to investigate and explore the multifaceted nature of the art form. Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Small began his formal training at the Baltimore School for the Arts.

ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHERS
ROY ASSAF (Choreographer; A Couple) is a mammal of the hominid family, belonging to the species Homo sapiens, although there are those who are convinced he possesses Neanderthal genes. He was born in 1982 in the rural community of Sde Moshe in a place that some call Israel, and some call Palestine. He broke his front tooth at the age of five while dancing on the slippery floor of his family home. At age six, he began giving tap concerts for his neighbor, who watched him dance on his concrete balcony from her window across the yard. From 1990 to 1996 he began creating and performing his own dances for monthly family gatherings in Jerusalem. At the age of 16, he met Regba Gilboa, an educator, dance lover, and believer in people who rooted in Roy the confidence that dance is where he belongs. Two years later, Roy was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces, a fact which never prevented him from continuing to envision dances. And from time to time, when things got tough, he would sway and groove to uplift his spirits. In 2004, he met Emanuel Gat who introduced him to Schubert and for whom he wore his first dress. In 2005 Roy met Anat Inditzky, who loves him for all his shortcomings to this day. Between 2008 and 2017 he met Aya, Nuri, Layla and Jona who continue to teach him about patience, perseverance, and fortitude, among many other things. In 2010, after three years in France, he came back to the place that some call Israel, and some call Palestine. And after one year of idleness, he gathered the courage to make a dance...after which he created another one and another…and another… and continues to this day.
LUCINDA CHILDS (Choreographer; Three Dances (for prepared piano) John Cage) born in 1940, began her career at the Judson Dance Theater In New York in 1963. Since forming her dance company ten years later, she has created over fifty works, both solo and ensemble and received numerous awards including the Dance Magazine Award, The Golden Lion award from the Venice Biennale and the Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival award for lifetime achievement. In 1976 she was featured in the landmark avant-garde opera EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH by Philip Glass and Robert Wilson, for which she won an Obie Award. In 1979, Childs choreographed one of her most enduring works, DANCE, with music by Philip Glass and film décor by Sol LeWitt, which toured internationally and has been added to the repertory of the Lyon Opera Ballet. Since 1981 Childs has choreographed over thirty works for major ballet companies and directed and
choreographed a number of contemporary and eighteenth-century operas for the Los Angeles Opera, for La Monnaie in Brussels and for the Opera du Rhin, among others. Most recently, Childs directed and choreographed Philip’ Glass AHKNATEN for Nice Opera Cote D’Azur which premiered in November 2021.
PETER CHU (Choreographer; Echoes of Sole and Animal) is a movement artist whose versatile roles encompass director, choreographer, stager, performer, educator, and mentor. Driven by a deep curiosity and a passion for learning, he generously shares his experiences and insights with others. Chu's love for the arts fuels his vivid imagination and creative expression. Born in the Bronx and raised in Cocoa Beach, Florida, Peter’s interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine deepened his understanding of his Chinese identity and influenced his artistic and individual values. This healing approach informs his creative process and shapes the movement experiences he cultivates. Peter began his journey as a competitive gymnast and further developed his artistry at Dussich Dance Studio. As a BFA student at The Juilliard School, he honed his technical skills and embarked on a path in choreography, earning the Hector Zaraspe Prize for Choreography upon graduation. With over two decades of experience in both concert and commercial dance, Chu has performed with esteemed companies such as Ballet Jazz de Montreal, Crystal Pite's Kidd Pivot, EZdanza, Aszure Barton and Artists, and Celine Dion's A New Day. His choreography has been featured in numerous organizations, including Ballet Augsburg, Backhaus Dance, Charlotte Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet, Cirque du Soleil, DART Dance Company, Gibney Dance Company, Giordano Dance Chicago, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Kansas City Ballet, MØN festival, and the Paul Taylor Dance Company. In 2008, he founded the project-based company chuthis., where he explores innovative lighting and sound alongside live contemporary movement, delving into the depths of his identity and artistry as a director, choreographer, and educator.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION
The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 475 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.
FUNDERS
Many Thanks to The Joyce's Institutional Funders for Keeping Us Moving Forward
An abundance of gratitude to Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Jerrold Nadler, and Representative Nydia M. Velázquez for their visionary leadership that established the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program, which made the reopening of The Joyce Theater in 2021 and the reemergence of many dance companies possible.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION
VISION STATEMENT
The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.
We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
To achieve this, we will:
• Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives;
• Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth;
• Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility;
• Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.
With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.
It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
