Sharon Eyal demonstrates the hypnotic power of the synchronous, the incredible dynamics of an organism made of human-machine-bodies. Minimal changes or serial variations disrupt the order of her groups, individuals break free from the repetitive patterns of an apparently post-human society. In 2013, Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar founded their own company L-E-V. The artist couple has a close relationship with Theaterhaus. COLOURS International Dance Festival has co-produced OCD Love, L-E-V was guest at following editions and Sharon Eyal has created two world premieres for the company.
ABC
NEW YORK PREMIERE
Choreography: Eric Gauthier
Music: Philip Kannicht, Eric Gauthier
Dancers: Shori Yamamoto / Luca Pannacci
“ABC” works with language – although ABC is meant quite literally. It takes the audience through the letters of the dance alphabet – from A for Arabesque to L for Lift and V for Variations. But “ABC” is also a tongue-in-cheek ‘guide for show-offs’ that plays with serious dance manuals. Among the whole technical vocabulary, Gauthier has therefore sneaked in a lot of expressions taken from the real life of a dancer, such as available or loud.
SWAN CAKE
NEW YORK PREMIERE
Choreography & Composition: Hofesh Shechter
Lighting: Mario Daszenies & Hofesh Shechter
Costumes: Gudrun Schretzmeier & Hofesh Shechter
Assistant to the Choreographer: Kim Kohlmann
Dancers: Anneleen Dedroog, Barbara Melo Freire, Luca Pannacci, Garazi Perez Oloriz, Izabela Szylinska, Sidney Elizabeth Turtschi, Giovanni Visone, Shawn Wu, Shori Yamamoto
Shechter is a master at merging dancing bodies into a single entity – and “SWAN CAKE” is no exception. His self-composed soundtrack, complete with cheeky hidden allusions to Tchaikovsky's “Swan Lake” music, forms the group into a swarm in which the movements spread organically from dancer to dancer. The irresistible, laid-back rhythm not only gets the swans going. The catchy tune stays in people's heads long after the show has ended.
MINUS 16
Choreography & Costumes: Ohad Naharin
Lighting: Avi Yona “Bambi“ Bueno
Music: Soundtrack from Cha-Cha de Amor, Popular song arranged by Dick Dale, Traditional song arranged and performed by the Tractor’s Revenge and Ohad Naharin, Nisi Dominus by Vivaldi, Song by Arlen Harold arranged by Marusha, Frédéric Chopin among others
Staging & Assistant to the Choreographer: Matan David
Dancers: Bruna Andrade, Tuti Cedeño, Andrew Cummings, Anneleen Dedroog, Karlijn Dedroog, Barbara Melo Freire, Stefano Gallelli, Luca Pannacci, Garazi Perez Oloriz, Arnau Redorta Ortiz, Shai Ottolenghi, Izabela Szylinska, Sidney Elizabeth Turtschi, Giovanni Visone, Shawn Wu, Shori Yamamoto
The musical mix of mambo, Vivaldi, hard-hitting electric guitar, and Israeli music is as diverse as the piece’s combination of different dynamics, like a thoughtful duet, reminiscences of ballroom dancing and a segment involving a circle of chairs and the hypnotically repeated question-and-answer ritual of the Jewish Passover song E”chad mi Yodea” – all tinted with Ohad Naharin's idiosyncratic style. “Minus 16” actually combines excerpts from the choreographer’s early pieces and has become a classic of Israeli dance which is performed throughout the world and really takes the audience along.
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Gauthier Dance//Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart is a young, dynamic company of 16 highly individual, versatile artists, directed by the dancer, choreographer, musician, and charismatic dance ambassador Eric Gauthier. Set up in October 2007, the company established itself in the German dance scene with record speed and has long since become an international brand. The repertoire includes works by Gauthier himself as well as famous contemporary choreographers such as William Forsythe, Itzik Galili, Jiří Kylián, Lightfoot/León, Hans van Manen, and Ohad Naharin. In addition to the performances at its home base Theaterhaus Stuttgart, the company is busy touring to international dance cities including Toronto, New York, Tel Aviv, Venice, Amsterdam, St. Petersburg, Monaco, Québec City, Montréal, Berlin, and Chicago. Gauthier Dance//Dance Company Theaterhaus Stuttgart was the German Highlight in the yearbook of the specialist magazine tanz 2022.
Parallel to its growing fame, Gauthier Dance has intensified collaborations with international star choreographers – most notably with artists in residence Marco Goecke (until 2023), Hofesh Shechter, and Barak Marshall. Recent programs include world premieres by Marie Chouinard,
Marco Goecke, Hofesh Shechter, Cayetano Soto, Aszure Barton, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Sharon Eyal, Marcos Morau, Sasha Waltz, Mauro Bigonzetti, Sharon Eyal, Andonis Foniadakis, and Louise Lecavalier. And in summer 2025, Gauthier Dance, as the hosting company, will open the COLOURS International Dance Festival with the world premiere of Turning of Bones , created by none other than star choreographer Akram Khan.
WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY
In addition to the "normal“ shows, Gauthier Dance has been committed to a pioneering socio-cultural format from the very beginning: the Gauthier Dance Mobile brought dance to people who cannot come to the theatre themselves and visited institutions such as retirement homes, hospitals, or homes for people with disabilities. In 2022, Theaterhaus and Eric Gauthier opened a new chapter in this outreach program with the MOVES FOR FUTURE initiative – by involving their new junior company. The Gauthier Dance JUNIORS//Theaterhaus Stuttgart inspire enthusiasm for dance in the next generation with numerous performances at schools in the region. The JUNIORS also make a great impression with their own stage productions, which are in no way inferior to those of their more experienced colleagues. It only took ERIC GAUTHIER (Artistic Director) a few years to make it from charismatic soloist of the Stuttgart Ballet to high-profile international choreographer and artistic director of one of Germany's most successful companies. Not least due to his tremendous networking skills, star choreographers, and exciting talents from all over the world regularly collaborate with Gauthier Dance – first and foremost the artists in residence Marco Goecke (until 2023), Hofesh Shechter, and Barak Marshall. At the same time, top companies worldwide have taken Gauthier's works into their repertoire, amongst others the Staatsballett Berlin, the St. Petersburg Mariinsky Ballet, the Stuttgart Ballet, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, Het Nationale Ballet Amsterdam, or the Ballet Nacional de Cuba. His tongue-in-cheek insider spoofs Ballet 101, Ballet 102, and ABC became international gala hits, danced by the likes of Roberto Bolle, Johan Kobborg, Xander Parish, and Victor Caixeta.
Gauthier is also known for his forays into other genres, for example with choreographies for stage shows, movies, or musical theatre productions. Moreover, Gauthier can now also be seen in front of the camera – as the presenter and dance expert of the documentary series Dance Around the World, which takes the television audience to the world's great dance cities. Gauthier has now also made a name for himself as a festival maker: In the summer of 2015, the premiere edition of COLOURS International Dance Festival, conceived by Gauthier and produced by Theaterhaus Stuttgart, took the public, the media and the dance world by storm.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION
The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 475 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

VISION STATEMENT
The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.
We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
To achieve this, we will:
• Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives;
• Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth;
• Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility;
• Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.
With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.
It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
