WHO'S GARTH FAGAN? GARTH FAGAN (Founder & Distinguished Artistic Director Emeritus) has been called “a true original,” “a genuine leader,” and “one of the great reformers of modern dance.” With over five decades of groundbreaking contributions to the art form, Mr. Fagan uses the dance vocabulary born of Garth Fagan Dance, Fagan Technique™, as the impetus for his choreography. As an “Irreplaceable Dance Treasure,” Tony, Olivier, and Helpmann Award winner, Fagan used his technique to create the movement that helped build Disney’s The Lion King on Broadway to its towering heights, which has earned him the distinction as the longest-running Black choreographer in Broadway history. Throughout his illustrious career, Fagan has continued to push boundaries, with notable works such as Mudan 175/39, Griot New York, Prelude, From Before, and Oatka Trail, earning critical acclaim. His influence spans globally, with commissions for leading companies and recognition from two presidents for his significant contributions to American culture. Beyond his artistic achievements, Fagan's commitment to education and cultural enrichment is evident in his role as a Chancellor's Award-winning Distinguished University Professor Emeritus and his decades-long tenure at the State University of New York at Brockport. His accolades include honorary doctorates from prestigious institutions, such as The Juilliard School and Rochester Institute of Technology, and awards and honors such as the Guggenheim Fellowship, Eastman Luminary Award, Fulbright 50th Anniversary Distinguished Fellow, NY "Bessie" Award, the Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award, and the Order of Distinction in the rank of Commander, and the Special Gold Musgrave Medal from his native country Jamaica, among many others. Most recently, Garth Fagan is the proud recipient of the 2025 "Bessie" Award for Lifetime Achievement!

ABOUT GARTH FAGAN DANCE NORWOOD ‘PJ’ PENNEWELL (Artistic Director & Rehearsal Director) joined Garth Fagan Dance in 1978. He is the quintessential Garth Fagan dancer and serves as Fagan’s assistant and muse. Pennewell is a recipient of the 1988 New York Performance Award "Bessie" and has been showcased all over the world on tour with Garth Fagan Dance, on Great Performances, The Tonight Show, and in Duke Ellington’s Queenie Pie. In 1994, he was invited to perform in the “66th Annual Academy Awards” broadcast. He assisted Mr. Fagan during his work on Broadway’s The Lion King and the NYC Ballet 50th-anniversary Ellington Project. Pennewell has choreographed 14 works on Garth Fagan Dance and has been commissioned to create works with Geva Theater, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Finger Lakes Opera. Of his work, The Village Voice said, “As you'd expect, Pennewell's movement and formal acuity are rooted in his mentor's style. But right away, there's a smart quirk…” The New York Times said, “Mr. Pennewell knows how to organize bodies. And he knows these bodies: their strengths, their weaknesses, their inclinations, in relation to a very particular way of moving.” Each work uses the Fagan Technique™ as a foundation and deftly shows Mr. Pennewell developing his craft by taking risks with musical choices and movement phrases in relationship to the music, lighting, and costuming. As a celebrated and world-class choreographer, he combines the unique elements of the Fagan Technique™ with sophisticated concepts and movement invention. NATALIE ROGERS-CROPPER (President & CEO) joined Garth Fagan in 1989. As a principal dancer, in 1992, she received the prestigious "Bessie" award for her performances. She is also a 1993 recipient of The President’s Award from her country of birth, Trinidad and Tobago. Natalie was voted one of the top three female modern dancers in the world, by readers of Dance Magazine in the 2004 Readers' Choice Awards. Natalie has served as one of Mr. Fagan’s assistants for the Tony Award-winning megahit The Lion King on Broadway, Ellington Elation on the New York City Ballet, and Jukebox for Alvin and From Before on the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Steve was also featured on PBS Great Performances with Griot New York and in Duke Ellington’s musical, Queenie Pie at the Kennedy Center. ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation (“The Joyce,” Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a non-profit organization, has served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, the theater was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. As one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance, The Joyce Theater has provided a performance home for over 500 U.S.-based and international dance companies. Beyond the stage, The Joyce supports dance artists through longstanding commissioning and creative residency programs and Joyce Theater Productions, helping to bring artist-driven projects to life from early development to the premiere and touring. In addition, The Joyce owns and operates the New York Center for Creativity & Dance in Manhattan’s East Village, providing affordable rehearsal and workspace for dance artists. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from The Joyce’s Dance Education Program for Schools, audiences gain insight into the creative process through Curtain Chats, and Family Matinees introduce children to dance and offer opportunities to meet the artists. The Joyce Theater’s annual season of 46 to 48 weeks of dance includes more than 300 performances featuring a broad range of dance forms, styles, and traditions for audiences of over 120,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION VISION STATEMENT

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.

The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.

We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. To achieve this, we will: • Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives; • Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth;

We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.

• Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility;

We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.

• Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.

It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.

With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.
