Fierce, unflinching, and tender, Tayeh draws on Sinéad O’Connor’s uncompromising voice and spirit to create a powerful meditation on voice, protest, and the courage to live a life that defies the norm. The Sarasota Ballet SEP 29-OCT 4 The Sarasota Ballet lands at The Joyce with a program honoring three of Britain’s great choreographers–Sir Frederick Ashton, Antony Tudor, and Sir Peter Wright. Coinciding with the 90th anniversary of its premiere, Tudor’s emotional and poignant masterpiece Lilac Garden opens the show with a tale of a young woman, her lover, and the man she must marry. Considered one of the pre-eminent exponents of the ballets of Sir Frederick Ashton, the program continues with a rich selection of Ashton divertissements, including the Balcony Scene from his seldom-seen Romeo and Juliet. Finally, bringing the performance to a close and in celebration of the choreographer’s 100th Birthday, Sir Peter Wright’s ethereal and exquisitely beautiful Summertide displays a unique and rare example of his abstract choreography.

Limón Dance Company OCT 6-11 The Limón Dance Company’s 80th anniversary celebration bridges legacy and innovation through landmark new work commissions and powerful cultural partnerships, solidifying the company as one of the most vital voices within the landscape of American and global dance. The program kicks off with José Limón’s 1958 Mazurkas, featuring live piano accompaniment and performed in its entirety for the first time since 1964. Born from his journey to Poland after World War II, Limón crafts a world of exuberant movement and rich musicality as a tribute to his dancers and the indomitable vitality he witnessed abroad. The program closes with the 2025 commission of Aszure Barton’s Join, created in collaboration with Grammy-nominated composer Ambrose Akinmusire. Together, they take José Limón's vivid, poetic description of a lost Doris Humphrey work and create a new world of spellbinding movement and transcendent storytelling. SCHEDULE M

Nrityagram Dance Ensemble OCT 13-18 The Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, India’s foremost Odissi dance company, invites audiences on a luminous journey across time with KHANKHANĀ—the sound of dancing feet. Described by the Times Colonist as “uniquely mysterious, eternal, and beautiful,” this evocative program is a tribute to the fertile red earth that nurtures the company’s home—the Nrityagram Dance Village—just outside Bangalore, India. Bringing together a constellation of acclaimed works, both new and beloved, KHANKHANĀ features the choreographic vision of internationally renowned Odissi artist and 2018 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award-winner Surupa Sen. Her work reveals a singular language of movement, at once meditative and dynamic, rooted in tradition yet deeply contemporary. London City Ballet OCT 27-NOV 1 The award-winning London City Ballet, former resident company of Sadler’s Wells, returns after its successful revival tour in 2024 with two mixed programs of enticing new ballets and cherished legacy works. Former director of Hamburg Ballet for over five decades, John Neumeier, presents his recent work, Ghost Light, offering a glimpse at the spirits of artists who once inhabited our stages, with world-renowned ballerina Alina Cojocaru guest-starring. In this centenary year of American choreographer Glen Tetley, the company pays homage by reviving his gothic retelling of Firebird, and, for the first time since 1991, reintroduces Jerome Robbins's Quiet City to the New York stage. Garth Fagan Dance NOV 4-8 The Rochester-based Garth Fagan Dance comes back to The Joyce Theater for its 55th season with its signature fusion of modern, post-modern, Afro-Caribbean, and ballet influences. Honoring Distinguished Artistic Director Emeritus Garth Fagan— recipient of the 2025 Bessie Award for Lifetime Achievement and the Tony Award-winning choreographer behind Disney’s The Lion King—the company presents an electrifying evening of rhythm, rigor, and soul. Program highlights include Fagan’s seminal Prelude: Discipline is Freedom and the evocative Never Top 40, returning to New York City for the first time since 2001. GALLIM NOV 11-15 As GALLIM approaches its 20th anniversary season in 2027, the company returns to The Joyce Theater with a repertory program that honors its past while looking boldly toward its future. Featuring new creations by founder and artistic director Andrea Miller alongside GALLIM’s first-ever commissioned work by another choreographer, former company member Sean Howe, the evening reflects the company’s enduring commitment to innovation, collaboration, and artistic evolution. The program includes state and YEAR, two acclaimed works by Andrea Miller originally commissioned through a creative partnership with A.I.M by Kyle Abraham. Complexions Contemporary Ballet NOV 17-29 “Technically and creatively… at the forefront of American contemporary ballet” (The Ballet Herald), Complexions Contemporary Ballet returns for its homecoming season under the direction of Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson. This twoweek engagement features three dynamic programs, including world premieres by Rhoden, 2021 Guggenheim Fellow TommieWaheed Evans, and Co-Associate Artistic Director Jillian Davis. In a special one-night-only tribute, Suite de Lavallade honors the legendary Carmen de Lavallade, featuring Desmond Richardson, former Dance Theatre of Harlem principal Christina Johnson, former Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater principal Sarita Allen, and music by Björk. TAO Dance Theater DEC 8-13 Founded in Beijing in 2008 by choreographers Tao Ye, Duan Ni, and Wang Hao, TAO Dance Theater has built a singular reputation for pushing the boundaries of physical expression— drawing audiences inside “an austere, meditative world” where “the body is a sacred place” (The New York Times). The company makes its Joyce debut this winter with the melding of two works from the company canon in Numerical Series—13 and 14. In 13, the individual becomes distinctive—expressing emotion and forging relationships while remaining faithful to the communal body, costumes shifting in subtle gradations from off-white to blue-gray. Then, 14 ignites a chromatic explosion, energizing unison movement in a sinuous, contemplative dance. By combining the two numbers, Tao Ye injects a new meaning into the work, mirroring an idiom on eternal curiosity of the body. SCHEDULE M

This January, Sekou McMiller & Friends marks its first Joyce appearance with Palladium Nights, a heart-pounding, joyous, rhythmically infectious celebration of the golden age of Latin dance and music. The latest addition to its repertory series Afro Latin Jazz and Soul Experience, Palladium Nights explores the cultural legacy and enduring artistic influence of New York’s historic Palladium Ballroom and America's Latin craze of the 40's, 50's, and 60's—a movement that became the heartbeat of nightlife, forever changing the landscape of music and dance culture worldwide. Circa WOLF JAN 12-24 Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, Circa has redefined contemporary circus with its “astonishing physical mastery” (The New York Times) since 2004, producing a body of works that “redraws the limits to which circus can aspire” (The Age). The company makes its Joyce debut with it’s latest creation, Wolf, is a gasp-inducing acrobatic thrill ride. For Director Yaron Lifschitz, the wolf is a symbol of our untameable selves: liberating, anarchic, and savage. Clad in designer Libby McDonnell's form-hugging costumes and set to DJ Ori Lichtik's driving, pulse-quickening rhythms, ten extraordinary Circa artists grasp, tear, climb, leap, and balance with fierce abandon. Sergio Bernal Dance Company F L A M E N C O L E G ACY FEB 16-21 Former Principal Dancer of the Ballet Nacional de España Sergio Bernal storms back to New York City with Flamenco Legacy, the highly anticipated evening-length program created by Sergio Bernal alongside Artistic Director Ricardo Cue. The powerhouse triple bill opens with Rango, a gripping drama of tension and shadow exploring honor, love, and family, featuring live music. Next, Aguilar's iconic Bolero strips away ornamentation to reveal escalating passion and relentless rhythm. The evening closes with the U.S. premiere of The Rite of Spring, fusing the jagged energy of Stravinsky's masterpiece with the fire of Spanish movement, featuring a full corps de ballet. Globally celebrated as “exhilarating and enchanting,” (The Guardian), Bernal doesn’t just perform flamenco; he evolves it—fusing the raw, percussive power of the tablao with the regal verticality of a classical prince. Ronald K. Brown/ EVIDENCE FEB 23-28 Founded in 1985, Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE seamlessly melds traditional African and Afro-Cuban dance with contemporary choreography and spoken word. The company closes out the Fall/Winter season with a dynamic program of company classics and Brown’s tour-de-force, Grace. SENSORY FRIENDLY PERFORMANCES

Each year, The Joyce Theater, a national leader in dance education, invites over 2,000 1st–12th grade students and teachers from the New York City metropolitan area to attend school-time performances and workshops, and engage with Joyce teaching artists in their classrooms.

Since 2017, The Joyce Theater has partnered with dance companies and artists to present sensory-friendly, school performances to reframe accessibility. Neurodivergent students, students with autism spectrum disorder or hearing impairments, and those with special sensory needs are welcomed into the theater. The performances feature low-decibel audio, dimmed house lights, and are often interactive. Students are given fidget and stress-reducing toys and a video social-narrative. They will have access to a quiet space at The Joyce, if requested.

INTERNSHIPS The Joyce Theater Foundation actively seeks highly motivated high school and college students interested in learning the behind-the-scenes operations of one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance. Key support provided for The Joyce’s Dance Education Program for Schools provided by The Hearsts Foundations. Lead support for The Joyce’s Internship and Teaching Artist programs provided by Heartfelt Wings Foundation. The Joyce’s Sensory-Friendly programming is generously supported by The Joseph LeRoy and Ann C. Warner Fund.

Through workshops with dancers and Joyce Teaching Artists, students and teachers engage with renowned artists at their schools and experience live performances onstage. The Young Leaders Circle (YLC) is a collective of passionate dance enthusiasts, ages 21 to 45, that include both long-time fans of the art form as well as those curious to learn more.
