ABOUT THE PROGRAM FRONTERAS (NYC Premiere)

Flamenco is the embodiment of what is possible when we don’t speak of boundaries. It is the physical manifestation of a time and place in which emotions are valued over words, gender is not limiting, religion is inclusive, and social hierarchies do not exist. The most liberating aspects of cultures from around the world come together to invigorate flamenco, a distinct art form with the innate potential for self-expression.

With this work, choreographers José Maldonado and Karen Lugo ask us to examine what happens to the individual forced to live within the confines of an inescapable shared space.

Using flamenco, they transpose these experiences into movement, asking the dancers to embody the complex and unknowable human spirit through the nuances found in the many styles of flamenco. Set to the musical landscape of José Luis de la Paz, FRONTERAS challenges the imposition of boundaries on a single person, a group, and society as a whole.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY CARLOTA SANTANA (Founder/Artistic Director), hailed as “The Keeper of Flamenco” by Dance Magazine and honored by the King and Government of Spain with La Cruz de la Orden al Mérito Civil for “all the years of passion, excellence, and dedication to the flamenco art,” is an internationally-renowned flamenco and Spanish dance artist and educator. In 1983, she co-founded Flamenco Vivo with Roberto Lorca; following his death from AIDS in 1987, she was determined to continue their work. In the decades since, she has led Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana’s growth with a mission to promote flamenco as a living art form and a vital part of Hispanic heritage.

Ms. Santana created the company’s innovative arts-in-education program, integrating Spanish dance and culture with academic curricula, and has pioneered bilingual education initiatives targeted to immigrant populations, as well as other programs addressing the special needs of disabled youth. Beyond the company’s on-going work, she has also been the driving force behind a series of unique special projects, including two flamenco symposia produced in collaboration with Duke University’s Dance Department (2012 and 2015), and the 100 Years of Flamenco in New York exhibit mounted in partnership with The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The first-ever curated museum show on flamenco in the U.S., 100 Years, ran for five months (March-August 2013) in The Vincent Astor Gallery at Lincoln Center; in his review, The New York Times chief dance critic Alastair Macaulay praised the “vitality and pride” of the show, noting: “This vivid collection enriches our ideas of both this genre and this city.” Ms. Santana has been on the faculty of Duke University for ten years and has taught at Long Island and New York Universities.

KAREN LUGO (Choreographer/Guest Artist) is a Mexican dancer, knowledgeable and respectful of tradition and at the same time restless and innovative. She has performed as a soloist in the Festival de Jerez, Festival Sangre Nueva Jóvenes Flamencos del Teatro Español de Madrid, the series Flamencos y Mestizos de la Fundación SGAE, the Festival Flamenco Ibérica Contemporánea, the series Concierta Independencia, the Lunario del Auditorio Nacional de la Ciudad de México, Festival Flamenco de Vancouver, Festival Flamenco de Montreal, Festival Flamenco Ciudad de Jaén, Festival Flamenco Madrid, and Festival Flamenco de Saintes, among many others. In collaboration with the Casa Patas Flamenco Foundation, she has premiered three shows; Flamencura, Flamenco Territorio DeMente, and Flamenco Frequencies with tours in the Middle East and the United States. As a choreographer, she has been awarded with Best Choreography award Spring Film Festival of Barcelona, First Prize for Flamenco Dance at the International Festival of Almeria, First Prize for Choreography at the Contemporary Flamenco Festival of Finland, and Third Prize for Choreography at the XVII Certamen de Danza Española y Flamenco de Madrid. Under the direction of Javier Latorre, she participated in the film Flamenco Flamenco by Carlos Saura, FLAMENCONAUTAS, and Lorca x Bach. Her latest show is titled Golpe de Tierra (Nominated for the Premis de la Crítica d'Arts Escéniques in the category of best solo show). She currently participates as choreographer and performer of Caminos by Juan Gómez Chicuelo, Cant Espiritual by Carles Denia, CAYANA by Anna Colom, El Amir Ensemble by Amir Haddad, and in Por Bach (Innovation Award GEMA 2020) by Hippocampus with Jorge Pardo.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY JOSÉ MALDONADO (Choreographer/Guest Artist) was born in Barcelona and received his degree in Spanish Dance and Flamenco from the Professional Conservatory there. At 18, he moved to Madrid and studied with María Magdalena, Paco Romero, and La China, who helped form him and dedicate himself to flamenco. He became a member of different companies each with its own style from the most traditional to the most contemporary: Javier Latorre, Antonio Canales, María Pagés, Blanca Li, Guito, Rocío Molina, Rafaela Carrasco, Marco Flores, Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, and Carlos Chamorro. Maldonado continued his development performing at various tablaos: Casa Patas, Corral de la Morería, Café de Chinitas, Villa Rosa, and Las Carboneras. José received first prize for best solo choreography (2013) and group choreography (2015) at the Madrid Certamen de Danza Española y Flamenco. Maldonado has worked with Guadalupe Torres and Manuel Liñan, acting as assistant director and choreographer. He produced his first full work Andrea in 2014. In 2016, he collaborated with Antonio Canales and Carmen Angulo to produce Bodegon, fusing dance, baroque music, and painting with flamenco. José also paints, and he has done title pages for performance programs and has creates designs for costumes. Maldonado is the winner of the 2019 Premio Artista Revelación at the XXIII Festival of Jerez, an award for best up-and-coming artist. His last commission for Flamenco Vivo was heralded as “the rare flamenco group piece that doesn’t stifle the individual spirit.”

FANNY ARA (Dancer) is an internationally-sought after and award-winning choreographer, performer, and instructor. Her most dedicated worldwide fans especially credit her as one of the driving forces of flamenco today; an artist excelling in the full spectrum of flamenco, from the most traditional to the avantgarde. Fanny has been an invited artist in national and international festivals and has toured extensively in Canada, Central and South America, the Middle East, Africa, and throughout Europe. She has been distinguished since 2006 with nominations from the Isadora Duncan Dance Awards in the categories of Most Outstanding Individual Dancer, Most Outstanding Music, Ensemble, and Individual Performance for her project, Juncal Street, and Best Ensemble for her work with the San Francisco Opera in La Traviata. New York’s Vilcek Foundation also awarded Fanny a prestigious finalist prize for “Creative Promise in Dance” in 2012. Fanny’s versatility in the art form of flamenco is manifested in her many artistic works. As Philip Gardner said of her performance at The Joyce Theater in New York City, “My newest love is Fanny Ara...the captivating expressive qualities of Fanny’s upper body mesmerized us while her footwork dazzled both the eye and the ear...she soared into the upper most echelon of dance artists I have witnessed over the years.”

ADRIAN DOMINGUEZ (Dancer) studied at the Seville Conservatory of dance from 2007 to 2011 and with Matilde Coral and Manolo Marin, the two most known maestros in Seville, and toured with the dance ensemble Mairena del Aljarafe.

Adrian received the First Prize in the youth category in the XXV competition of regional dances in 2008. In 2017, he received the first Prize for Jóvenes Talento from the Cristina Heeren Foundation. He has studied with Juan Manuel Fernández Montoya (Farruquito), Manuel Betanzos, Juan de los Reyes, Alicia Márquez, Rafaela Carrasco, Rosario Montoya (La Farruca), Rafael Campallo, Antonio “El Pipa,” and Andrés Peña, among others. From 2014 to 2017, Adrian resided and

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY performed in tablaos in Madrid such as Casa Patas, Torres Bermejas, Villa Rosa, and La Pacheca. Presently, he is living in Seville performing at tablaos such as Los Gallos and Auditorio Álvarez Quintero, and he is a member of and has toured with the Company of Jose Antonio Ruiz.

LORENA FRANCO (Dancer) began studying dance at the age of five in her home town of Cordoba. She continued her studies there until 2005 when she received a grant to study with the well-known Maestro Granero in Seville. There, she also studied with Andrés Marín, Isabel Bayón, Rocío Coral, Matilde Coral, Rubén Olmo, Antonio Canales, Rafael Campallo, Encarna López, Adela Campallo, and Eva Yerbabuena, among others. She began her professional career with Eva Yerbabuena in 2006 and worked with her until 2017 as rehearsal director. She then worked with other companies such as Daniel Navarro, Javier Latorre, Andrés Peña, and Álvaro Paños, among others. She has worked as soloist in productions of Agustín Carbonell "el Bola" and Manuel Cuevas. She also performs frequently as soloist in tablaos such as Los Gallos in Seville, Las Tablas in Madrid, Los Tarantos and Las Ramblas in Barcelona, and in Japan.

RICARDO MORO (Dancer) was born in Madrid and graduated in Spanish Dance and Flamenco at age 15. Later, he joined the Ballet de Carmen Mota, a company followed by others such as Belén López; Flamenco Hoy, by Carlos Saura (directed

by Rafael Estévez and Valeriano Paños); Flamencos En route, as a solo dancer and choreographer (sharing a poster at the Dusseldorf Opera with Mats Ek and Ana Laguna); Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía (directed by Rafael Estévez and Valeriano Paños); María Juncal, in Flamenco nuevo; Carlos Chamorro, in Sed and Mujeres de Jacinto, La Truco, in Sentencia (Festival de Jerez), among others. He currently works in the different and prestigious tablaos of Madrid: Corral de la Morería, Casa Patas, Villa Rosa, Café de Chinitas, Las Carboneras, Torres Bermejas, and in Seville: El Arenal, Los Gallos and in Los Tarantos, in Barcelona. In 2013, he was awarded the second prize of choreography in the Dance and Performing Arts Contest of Alcobendas with his own choreography, Catharsis.

EMILIO OCHANDO (Dancer) was born in Valencia and began his training at the age of nine. At 12, he collaborated with the National Ballet of Spain and at 16 moved to Madrid, continuing his training and finishing his studies at The Royal Professional Conservatory of Madrid “Mariemma.” He has performed with the Companies of Domingo Ortega, Inma Ortega, Malucos Danza, Nuevo Ballet Español (Rojas and Rodríguez), and Aida Gómez and performed in various tablaos nationally and internationally. In 2013, he created his own Company and produced works such as 3DEUNO and SIROCO. He has choreographed for the Rafael Aguilar Company and for the production of Oh Cuba in Granada at the Generalife. He choreographed Romeo and Juliet for the EBB Company and Sin Duda for the latest production of the Royal Professional Conservatory Marienma.

He performs workshops and masterclasses traveling to the United States, Canada, London, and Europe. During his career, he has received many awards: First prize in the international contest of Spanish dance and flamenco city of Almeria. First prize Talentmadrid 2016 and First prize in the Certamen de Baile Español y Flamenco in Madrid in 2016. In 2018, he was a candidate for the 2018 MAX awards for a best

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY male performance and a best new show for SIROCO. Presently, he is performing as guest artist and touring with his latest 3DEUNO and SIROCO shows. He has performed in festivals such as the Festival de Jerez, Suzanne Dellal Festival, and Flamenco Madrid Festival, among others.

LAURA PERALTA (Dancer) began her musical studies at the age of eight, attending the Manhattan School of Music and later the Johns Hopkins University. She began her dance studies with Omayra Amaya in New York City at the age of 23. Laura has danced for companies including Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, Soledad Barrio y Noche Flamenca, A Palo Seco Flamenco, Nelida Tirado Flamenco, Pasión y Arte, and Juan Siddi Flamenco Theatre. She was a scholarship recipient at the School at Jacob’s Pillow, has taught masterclasses for university dance programs, and has had original work selected for festivals including the Queensborough Dance Festival and MNE’s Emerging Choreographer Series (in 2021 and 2022 as returning choreographer). She has performed in the NYC area and toured throughout the US, sharing the stage with renowned artists at venues including the National Museum of Dance, Wolftrap, the Delacorte Theater, the Rockefeller Estate, Kaatsbaan Cultural Center, BAM Fisher Hall, Jacob's Pillow Inside/Outside Festival, and The Joyce Theater. Laura currently teaches, performs, and continues her flamenco evolution in New York City and Seville, Spain.

JOSÉ LUIS DE LA PAZ (Guitarist/Composer) is an award-winning guitarist: a composer, virtuoso, and performer whose original compositions range from the most traditional to the most experimental forms in flamenco music. Following the oral traditions of the form, he became the prized pupil of the legendary Mario Escudero at the age of 15. In 1995, he appeared in Felix Grande's book Agenda Flamenca as one of the best guitarists in Spain. The unique versatility of José Luis allows him to navigate the dazzling ocean of flamenco, from the accompaniment of singers and dancers to demanding waters of songwriting and solo performance.

He was the musical director and composer for the Ballet Cristina Hoyos for ten years (the star of Carlos Saura’s films) and his collaborations, Siudy Garrido, José Mercé, Concha Buika, Belén Maya, Farruquito, Antonio Canales, La Des Moines Symphony Orchestra, and The Los Angeles Philharmonic (LA Phil), among other figures, speak eloquently of his distinguished artistic personality. While his practice is rooted in the traditional flamenco, José Luis’ work goes far and beyond the flamenco parameters; his music cannot be just labeled as flamenco, but as world music. This is seen in one of his latest collaborations with the composer Colin Farish on his work East of the Evening Star. His commitment to his practice, his profound knowledge of the tradition and the roots combined with the desire for research and experimentation, and his contemporary approach to flamenco music, gives José Luis a powerful potential to be considered as one of the best guitarists of today.

CALVIN HAZEN (Guitarist) has relocated to the United States after 20 years of living and working as a professional guitarist in Madrid, Spain. During this time, he performed at some of the most famous Flamenco Tablaos in Spain, including El Corral de La Moreria, Casa Patas, Las Carboneras, Las Tablas, and El Teatro Arenal. Here, he shared the stage with such illustrious artists as Jesus Carmona, Nino de los Reyes, Karime Amaya, Manuel Liñan, Carmen “La Talegona,” and Belen

He has performed at some of the most prestigious theatres in the U.S. as well as internationally, including Radio City Music Hall and Lincoln Center in New York City, and Teatro Nacional in Mexico City and Teatro Madrid in Spain, where his performances have enjoyed enthusiastic critical acclaim. He has worked as musical director and composer for numerous companies including Suite Española, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, and Maria Benitez Teatro Flamenco.

He is a regular performer and instructor for Festival Flamenco, Albuquerque. Calvin has worked as instructor and accompanist/composer in the Theatre and Dance Department at UNM. Most recently, he collaborated with Spanish pop icon Pablo Alboran on the recording of Terral, the five-time platinum selling record which enjoyed 11 straight weeks as Spain’s number one selling record.

FRANCISCO OROZCO “YIYI" (Percussionist/Singer) was born in Barcelona to an Andalusian family and was introduced to Flamenco rhythms at the tender age of four. Yiyi was trained by flamenco singer and father “Joselón de Jerez” in his Spanish peña named “Peña Fosforito.” Considered a child prodigy of percussion, Yiyi began his professional career at the age of 12. By age 17, and one CD later, he became more involved with singing, and left Spain for Germany on a long-term contract with the company “Flamenco Rubio.” Since that time, he has performed with “Compañia Flamenca Alhama” throughout Europe and Japan; with María Benitez “Teatro Flamenco,” and Domingo Ortega, as well as at “Casa Patas” in Madrid. He has also performed with Alejandro Granados, Yolanda Heredia, El Toleo, El Pelao, María Serrano, La Tania, and Antonio Granjero. Yiyi has been a member of Flamenco Vivo for over 20 years.

FRANCISCO TRINIDAD “EL TRINI DE LA ISLA” (Singer) was born in Cadiz began studying cante at a young age with Manuel Soto “Sordera de Jerez.” At age 22, he dedicated himself to becoming a professional and began singing in festivals and clubs throughout Andalucía. During this time, he received First Prize in the Tacita de Plata contest and as well as First Prize in the contest “Cameron de la Isla” de San Fernando. In 2002, he recorded his first CD with Cristina Hoyos. He then continued his professional trajectory, performing in tablaos in Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville.

He has performed in festivals such as Festival de Nimes, Mont de Marson Potaje de Utrera, and the Festival de Jerez and has toured world-wide. He has performed with Miguel Poveda in the Bienal de Sevilla and with Rosario Toledo, Alejandro Granados, and Pastora Galvan, among others. He is the singer for the flamenco school “Manuel Betanzos” and presently works with many companies touring and in tablaos singing for dance.

CIHTLI OCAMPO (Assistant to the Director) began dancing at the age of three.

Classically trained, Ms. Ocampo moved to New York City at 17 where she studied at the Alvin Ailey School of American Dance. In 1996, Ms. Ocampo changed her focus to Flamenco and began performing with Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, Danzas Españolas, and The American Bolero Dance Company based out of Carnegie Hall. In 1999, Cihtli was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for the study of Flamenco and Spanish Dance in Spain, initiating an 11-year residency in Andalucía, Spain.

From 2000-2007, Ocampo trained and performed exclusively with the legendary Farruco family in Sevilla, debuting in Farruquito’s production of “Alma Vieja.” She

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY has toured with some of the world’s most important flamenco artists, including the Farrucos, Manuel Molina, Miguel Funi, Ines Bacan, Concha Vargas, Montse Cortes, Pepe Torres, and Chano Dominguez. In 2006, Ms. Ocampo was a founding member of Arte y Pureza Flamenco Company, an international dance and music company dedicated to diffusing pure, roots Flamenco Gitano worldwide.

In 2010, Ms. Ocampo relocated to Los Angeles where she continues to produce, choreograph, teach, and perform. She has choreographed and been featured in countless original productions including Maestria, Sonikete Blues, and Our Ephemeral Nature. She appears in multiple films and music videos including Exils

by Tony Gatlif (Best Cinematography - Cannes Film Festival), Kayan by Maryam Najafi, and Send in The Clowns and Tricks for Treats by Ethan Margolis. She has created over 40 original pieces and short films crossing multiple genres and has been recognized by the Kennedy Center Regional College Theater Festival. She rejoined Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana in 2022 as assistant to the director.

WILL ELPHINGSTONE (Lighting Designer), originally from Dallas, TX, is a New Yorkbased lighting designer for live performance. He is excited to return to Flamenco Vivo this spring to design for FRONTERAS. Recent credits include Maytag Virgin (Theatre Three); Designing Women (Arkansas Rep); NYFW ’22 Duncan New York (Nazar Agency); The Great 30 (Bombshell Dance Company); Seussical (Weehawken HS Theatre); The Motherf**ker With the Hat, Shady Acres, Measure for Measure (Rutgers Theater Company). He is the associate lighting designer and moving light programmer for the Drone Racing League, as seen on NBC Sports.

Away from the tech table, Will is an avid photographer interested in capturing the light in the world around us. His work can be found on the ‘gram @wrelighting and @wre.photography.

DAISY LONG (Lighting Designer/Supervisor) is a lighting designer for theater, opera, music, and dance. She is thrilled to be back with Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana at The Joyce this year. Credits include Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Keen Company, Abingdon, Alliance Theatre, Everyman Theatre, Wexford Festival Opera, BAM, The Shed, Speakeasy Stage Company (IRNE Award for The Scottsboro Boys), and TADA! Youth Theater (National Youth Arts Award for The Perfect Monster). She is a New Georges Affiliated Artist and Roundabout Teaching Artist. Member, USA 829. ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists.

The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities.
