Ever So Slightly SEP 17-22

Los Angeles native Victor Quijada grew up breakdancing and performed with Twyla Tharp’s company before creating his own troupe in 2002. His internationally renowned Montreal based dance company, RUBBERBAND, makes its Joyce debut with Ever So Slightly, a thrilling work exploring the reflexes we develop against the irritants that bombard our daily lives. Simultaneously delivering delicacy, brutality, and high-voltage action, the group’s ten dancer-athletes deliver the energy of revolt, chaos, and flight with finesse.

Ayodele Casel + Arturo O’Farrill SEP 24-29 “A tap dancer of unquestionable radiance” (The New York Times), Ayodele Casel joins six-time GRAMMY Award winner Arturo O’Farrill to create a collaborative world premiere.

Rooted in Afro-Latin jazz culture, both artists share a common musical language that flows freely from modal jazz to stride piano to danzón to salsa and rhumba. Joined by a team of incredible musicians and tap dancers, Casel and O’Farrill explore genre-bending music and dance filled with unbridled joy.

The Little Prince OCT 1-6 Hailed as “one of the year’s must-see shows” by The Philadelphia Inquirer, BalletX returns to The Joyce Theater with the New York premiere of Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s The Little Prince, a full-length ballet performed to the live music of composer Peter Salem. Inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry ’s timeless novella of adventure and enlightenment, Lopez Ochoa’s The Little Prince is a ballet for the whole family, sure to delight the imagination of children and adults alike.

Akasha OCT 8–12

“Divinely gifted…intoxicating” (The New York Times) preeminent Kuchipudi dancer Shantala Shivalingappa brings her work Akasha to The Joyce Theater. Offering audiences vivid interpretations of the classical South Indian dance style, steeped in expressive narrative with flowing lines, nimble leaps, and percussive footwork, the program showcases the Bessie Award-winning performer’s exceptional artistry in five solos inspired by ancient Hindu poems brought to life with four master musicians.

A.I.M OCT 15-20 With its “urgent and expressive choreography” (The New York Times), Kyle Abraham’s brilliant company returns with an enticing program that includes the world premiere of the choreographer’s newest solo for himself, accompanied by a live gospel choir. Also on tap is Show Pony, a recent solo work by Abraham performed alternately by Princess Grace Award recipients Tamisha Guy and Marcella Lewis; and Big Rings, a dynamic group work created by A.I.M member Keerati Jinakunwiphat. The company premiere of Trisha Brown’s groundbreaking 1976 work Solo Olos rounds out the program.

The opening night performance will feature a one night only special guest appearance by American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer Misty Copeland performing a work created

by Abraham.

Maya Beiser + Wendy Whelan + Lucinda Childs + David Lang OCT 22-27 A collaboration among legends, THE DAY is a new work by cellist Maya Beiser, beloved dancer Wendy Whelan, iconoclastic choreographer Lucinda Childs, and Pulitzer Prize winning composer David Lang. A New York premiere, this momentous melding of multi-genre creative genius comes in an eveninglong sensory exploration of two journeys—life and the eternal, post-mortal voyage of the soul. THE DAY is a bold and highly collaborative work that explores universal themes through the shared language of music and dance.

Black Grace OCT 29 - NOV 3 Performing a “strikingly imaginative fusion of traditional Samoan/Maori dance and contemporary styles” (The Boston Globe), New Zealand’s Black Grace makes its Joyce debut with a selection of works choreographed by founder and artistic director Neil Leremia spanning the company’s 24-year history.

Signature pieces such as Pati Pati, Deep Far, and Method appear alongside the U.S. premiere of E Toa, E Toa, which incorporates live singing and traditional Cook Island Drumming.

Excerpts from recent full-length works include Crying Men, which explores masculinity from a Pacific perspective, and As Night Falls, set to music by Vivaldi.

Ephrat Asherie Dance Odeon

NOV 5-7 Choreographer and “bona fide b-girl” (The Boston Globe) Ephrat Asherie brings a high-energy, hybrid work that layers breaking, hip-hop, house, and vogue. In their second collaboration together, the choreographer teams up with her brother, jazz pianist Ehud Asherie, whom The New Yorker has called “a master of swing and stride.” In Odeon, the duo reimagines signature compositions of 20th-century Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth, noted for melding classical music with Afro-Brazilian rhythms. Featuring seven dancers and four musicians, Odeon creates a world that offers “a wholly original style and sound” (The Chicago Tribune).

Camille A. Brown & Dancers Mr. TOL E. RAncE NOV 9-10 “Dramatically brilliant, physically exhilarating,” raves The New York Times. Bessie Award-winning Mr. TOL E. RAncE is the first installment of Camille A. Brown’s trilogy on black identity. Inspired by Spike Lee’s provocative movie Bamboozled, and Mel Watkins’s book On the Real Side: A History of African American Comedy from Slavery to Chris Rock, Brown’s work celebrates the humor and perseverance of the black performer while examining stereotypes that still dominate popular Black culture. Comedy, animation, and theater come together with live soul-stirring music and compositions from award-winning artists to engage the audience in a timely dialogue.

Kate Wallich + The YC X Perfume Genius

The Sun Still Burns Here NOV 13-17

Experience a spiritual unraveling of romantic decay with the New York premiere of The Sun Still Burns Here, which blends contemporary dance and live, soul-baring pop-rock. The combination of Perfume Genius’s “glorious, inventive, shapeshifting music“ (The Guardian) with the exacting craft and raw potency of Kate Wallich’s movement will “undeniably lure you and immerse you somewhere far from the workaday world“ (The Seattle Times). Wallich, who has been named in Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch,” brings her Seattle-based troupe The YC to The Joyce Theater for the first time.

Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca Entre Tu y Yo (Between You and Me) NOV 19 - DEC 1 Deemed by The New York Times as “one of today’s great dancers of any genre,” Soledad Barrio performs with some of Spain’s most celebrated flamenco artists in Entre Tu y Yo (Between You and Me), an evening-length program of duets, solos, and ensemble works. The program opens with an exploration of the duet form, and builds to a cathartic finale with a semi-improvised solo for Barrio, touching on themes of love, passion, jealousy, and death. “[This is] flamenco puro — the Spanish art stripped to its flammable core” (The Financial Times).

And Still You Must Swing DEC 3-8 Hailed by The New York Times as “the most moving dance show of the year,” Dormeshia’s And Still You Must Swing brings together three of the best tap dancers in the world— Dormeshia, who leads the project alongside Derick K. Dorrance Dance DEC 17-JAN 5 “One of the most imaginative tap choreographers working today” (The New Yorker), Michelle Dorrance and her tap dream team arrive just in time for the holidays with a world premiere by Michelle Dorrance set to Duke Ellington’s sublime interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. And in the New York premiere of All Good Things Come to an End, the iconic music of Fats Waller frames a wild, satirical ride through tableaux ranging from “Cane and Able” to “The Myth of the American Dream.” A thrilling collection of unique voices, Dorrance is joined onstage with her collaborators Hannah Heller, Melinda Sullivan, and Josette Wiggan-Freund.

AMERICAN DA Urban Bush Women* JAN 7 & 12 Led by award-winning founder Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Urban Bush Women creates theatrical contemporary dance works informed by the traditions of the African Diaspora, performed by dancers who deliver “urgent letters to the world, stories bursting to be told” (Dance Magazine). The program includes a collaboration between Zollar and Senegalese choreographer Germaine Acogny entitled Women’s Resistance, a call to action to amplify women’s voices in 2020. Also planned—and performed to live percussion—is Zollar’s I Don’t Know, but I Been Told, If You Keep on Dancin’ You Never Grow Old, an energetic mashup of dance forms emerging from black communities, from stepping to street dancing.

AMERICAN DA Bruce Wood Dance* JAN 8 & 12 Emotionally charged and virtuosic, Bruce Wood Dance is a compelling contemporary dance company built on the vision and artistry of acclaimed Texan choreographer Bruce Wood.

Hailing from Dallas, the company is known for its moving choreography, poignant imagery, and intimate partnering.

Led by artistic director Joy Bollinger, the company carries on Wood’s legacy while incorporating new works by awardwinning choreographers. For this engagement, the troupe performs Wood’s innovative all-male dance theater work I’m My Brother’s Keeper, and former Parsons’ dancer and choreographer Katarzyna Skarpetowska’s wild rollercoaster of a dance, Yesod.

JAN 9 & 11 Quickly gaining critical acclaim, Embodiment Project is an award-winning San Francisco based company that intersects street dance traditions like house dance, b-girling, hip hop, and more with poetic theatrical elements and live music.

Artistic director Nicole Klaymoon’s signature approach to dance emphasizes the sacred practice of voicing stories of trauma to reclaim power. In this engagement, the company presents Ancient Children, an original work of hip hop dance theater that engages a critical conversation around childhood trauma, race, and healing. “[T]he performers are charismatic, the hip-hop dance commanding, the truths delivered unflinching” (Ford Review).

N C E P L AT F O R M ODC/Dance* Dead Reckoning JAN 9 & 11 Founded in 1971 by Brenda Way, San Francisco’s ODC/ Dance is prized for its “full-bodied and expansive” (The New Yorker) contemporary work. The company presents coartistic director KT Nelson’s Dead Reckoning, a spellbinding dance that explores a world altered by climate change, featuring original music by celebrated Kronos Quartet cellist Joan Jeanrenaud. The work’s title refers to a method of navigation in which one’s position is determined without the predictable reference points of stars, increasing the likelihood of accumulative error. As the dance progresses, lime green snow begins to fall from the dancers’ hands. Bit by bit, our world is transformed.

AMERICAN DA Rosie Herrera Dance Theatre* Make Believe JAN 10 & 11 “One of the strongest and most original talents to emerge from Miami� (Miami Herald), Rosie Herrera is a Cuban-American choreographer known for her whimsical and poignant dance theater works. In Make Believe, Herrera turns her attention toward religion to explore how early encounters of spiritual belief systems inform how we experience romantic love later.

Through vignettes inflected with characteristic humor and sadness, Make Believe deconstructs what it means to believe in magic, and what it means to be in love.

His award-winning company, Rennie Harris Puremovement, brings its powerful, athletic, and deftly constructed dances to The Joyce. In Nuttin’ But a Word, a suite of short works created by Harris, a cast of masterful performers versed in a myriad of street dance forms push locking, house, hip hop, and b-boying to the brink, challenging the notion that the preservation of hip hop and its evolution are mutually exclusive.

Cion (Requiem of Ravel’s Boléro) JAN 15-18 Physically charged and visually striking, Cion: Requiem of Ravel’s Boléro is a powerful work featuring live singing, choreographed by South African star Gregory Vuyani Maqoma. Set in a graveyard filled with the haunting music of Isicathamiya singers—an a cappella style originating from the Zulu people—the production draws inspiration from Zakes Mda’s novel Cion and Maurice Ravel’s Boléro. Presented as part of the pioneering opera-theatre festival PROTOTYPE, in Maqoma’s words, the show is “a lament, a requiem required to awaken a part of us, the connection to the departed souls.”

COMPLEXIONS Contemporary Ballet JAN 21-FEB 2 Artistic directors Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson serve up thought-provoking and entertaining contemporary ballet performed by “utterly transfixing” (Billboard Magazine) dancers. A refreshed version of audience favorite, Innervisions, set to the music of Stevie Wonder, returns alongside two crowd-pleasing world premieres.

Rounding out the program, last year’s “galvanizing protest rally of a ballet” (Hyperallergic), WOKE, and the athletic and celebratory Bach 25 are back by popular demand.

Companhia de Dança Deborah Colker Cão Sem Plumas (Dog Without Feathers) FEB 4-9 “A Brazilian revolution” (San Francisco Chronicle), Companhia de Dança Deborah Colker makes a long-awaited return with Cão Sem Plumas (Dog Without Feathers), an evocative performance inspired by João Cabral de Melo Neto’s poem of the same name. Winner of the international Prix Benois de la Danse, the work explores the Capibaribe River region in Northeast Brazil and the dry land and riverbed dwellers that water sustains. In a powerful blend of contemporary dance, poetry, and film, Colker meditates on inequity and resilience as she attempts to dissolve the moving body, covered in dust, into liquid.

Che Malambo FEB 11-16 The show-stopping, foot-stomping all-male dance company Che Malambo brings rich Argentinian traditions and rigorous dancing to The Joyce’s stage for an exhilarating show that is perfect for the entire family. A dance form practiced by gauchos, or South American cowboys, Malambo developed in the 17th century from competitive duels that tested agility, strength, and dexterity. Che Malambo brings this thrilling spectacle of percussive dance and music to life as its performers exude “a power and passion that builds into a kind of ecstasy” (The Boston Globe).

The Joyce invites young audiences and grown-ups to experience renowned companies together and to enjoy a special opportunity to meet the artists following the performances. Kids’ tickets are only $10. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Kids seeing at least three family performances automatically become Joyce Junior members and save 40% on the price of their tickets—that’s $10 reduced to only $6.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS Each year, The Joyce Theater, a national leader in dance education, invites over 2,000 1st–12th grade students and teachers in the New York City metropolitan area to attend special perfomances and workshops.

INTERNSHIPS The Joyce Theater Foundation actively seeks highly motivated high school and college students interested in learning about the behind-the-scene operations of one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance.
