ABOUT THE COMPOSER ERNESTO JÚLIO DE NAZARETH (Composer) was a Brazilian composer and pianist (1863–1934). He published his first composition Você Bem Sabe (1877), at age fourteen. At this time, he began his professional career playing in cafes, balls, society parties, and in the waiting rooms of movie theaters in Rio de Janeiro. Known for creatively combining musical influences from Brazil, Africa, and Europe, Nazareth straddled the genres of popular and classical music, often blurring the boundary between the two worlds.

Although greatly influenced by Chopin, Nazareth was also noted for his singular maxixe and choro compositions and composed over 210 waltzes, sambas, polkas and quadrilles during his lifetime. His work is now included as part of teaching programs for both classical and popular styles all over the world.

ABOUT THE COMPANY Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD) is a dance company rooted in Black and Latinx vernacular dance. Dedicated to exploring the inherent complexities of various street and club dances (including breaking, hip hop, house, and vogue) EAD investigates the expansive narrative qualities of these forms as a means to tell stories, develop innovative imagery, and find new modes of expression. EAD’s first evening-length work, A Single Ride, earned two Bessie nominations in 2013 for Outstanding Emerging Choreographer and Outstanding Sound Design by Marty Beller. The company has presented work at the Apollo Theater, Columbia College, Dixon Place, FiraTarrega, Works & Process at the Guggenheim, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, the Joyce Theater, La MaMa, River to River Festival, New York Live Arts, Summerstage, and The Yard, among others.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY EPHRAT "BOUNCE" ASHERIE (Director/ Choreographer/Dancer) is a New York Citybased b-girl, performer and choreographer/ director and a 2016 Bessie Award Winner for Innovative Achievement in Dance. Asherie has received numerous awards to support her work including Dance Magazine's Inaugural Harkness Promise Award, a Jacob's Pillow Fellowship at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, and a National Dance Project Award. In 2019 she was the recipient of a NYFA Fellowship and a New York City Center Choreography Fellowship. Asherie is currently a 2021-22 Jerome Hill Artist Fellow.

Her new work UnderScored, commissioned by Works & Process at the Guggenheim, was awarded a 2019 Creation and Development Award from the National Performance Network and will premiere in the summer of 2021. Asherie has created work for various university dance programs, including programs at Lehman College, Smith College, SUNY Brockport and the University of California, Santa Barbara. She earned her BA from Barnard College, Columbia University in Italian and her MFA from the University of WisconsinMilwaukee where she researched the vernacular jazz dance roots of contemporary street and club dances.

Asherie is honored to have been mentored by Richard Santiago (aka Break Easy) and to have worked and collaborated with Buddha Stretch, Bill Irwin, Michelle Dorrance, Doug Elkins, Gus Solomons Jr., and Rennie Harris. Asherie is a co-founding member of the all-female house dance collective MAWU and is forever grateful to NYC’s underground dance community for inspiring her to pursue a life as an artist.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY EHUD ASHERIE (Musical Director) “a master of swing and stride" (The New Yorker), is a jazz pianist who integrates the venerable New York piano tradition into his inventive style. Largely self-taught, or rather, “old-schooled,” Asherie learned the ropes at Smalls, spending the wee small hours of his early teens becoming a fixture of the late-night jam sessions. Mentored by the late Frank Hewitt, Asherie began to develop “his virtuosity and his ear for clean, crisp lines“ (The Star- Ledger). From Smalls to the Rainbow Room, from Lincoln Center to The Village Vanguard, Asherie has since worked with a broad range of musicians including: Eric Alexander, Roy Ayers, Peter Bernstein, Jesse Davis, Bobby Durham, Vince Giordano, Wycliffe Gordon, Scott Hamilton, Catherine Russell, Ken Peplowski, and Clark Terry.

Ehud has toured clubs and festivals around the world, including South America, Europe, and Asia. His playing can be heard on countless recordings, including the 2010 Grammy Award winning soundtrack of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. Acclaimed album releases under Ehud Asherie’s leadership have included Shuffle Along, which reinterpreted the music of Eubie Blake, Organic, which finds Asherie on organ, and Upper West Side and Lower East Side, duet projects featuring the saxophonist Harry Allen and his trio recording Music Makes Me. WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY MANON BAL (Dancer) is a versatile professional dancer from Marseille, France. She has trained at the IFPRO Centre de International de Dance Rick Odums in Paris and at the prestigious Ailey School in New York City. As a choreographer, Manon is the co-founder of Mozaik Dance in collaboration with Janine "J9" Micheletti and Sun Kim. The company has presented their work Sad Hope at Jacob's Pillow, San Francisco Hip Hop Dance Fest, and as a part of the New Victory Dance Series. As a performer, Manon has danced with PMT Dance Company at Barclays Center for the Nets Halftime Show, and worked for respected choreographers such as Ronald K. Brown, Tweet Boogie, Jon Rua, and Miki Tuesday.

TEENA MARIE CUSTER (Dancer) is an artist and healer based in Pittsburgh, PA. Her solo choreographic work has been presented at Sadler’s Wells in London, and then toured around the U.S. She has created street dance theater works for over 35 university dance departments around the country, and after receiving an M.F.A. from Ohio State, was on faculty at Slippery Rock University and the American Dance Festival. She is a member of Venus Fly and Get Down Gang street dance crews, and has been with Ephrat Asherie Dance since 2012, while also touring with Bill “Crutchmaster” Shannon.

HENRIQUE EISENMANN (Musician) has established himself as an innovator inside the contemporary improvisation world, creating an original musical universe that is powerfully creative, authentic, and accessible to anyone. Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Eisenmann has always been intrigued with the idea of translating different musical sonorities to the piano. His music focuses on unique collaborations with artists from all different fields: dancers, poets, and actors. Recently, his "Notes for Pina Bausch" suite has been performed and choreographed by several international dance companies.

Eisenmann is a current piano faculty member at the Juilliard School, the New England Conservatory, and the Artistic Director of Jazz Lab.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY CHRIS HANEY (Musician) was born in Xenia, Ohio and has been living in New York City since 2002. Chris holds a Bachelors of Music from Ohio State University, and a Masters of Music from SUNY Purchase. He has performed throughout the United States, Europe, South America, and the Caribbean. Chris has recorded or performed with Brad Leali, Greg Tardy, Wessell Anderson, Bobby Porcelli, Joe Magnarelli, Ray Vega and many others. He can be seen performing regularly at jazz clubs such as Smalls, Fat Cat, and Mezzrow in New York City.

VAL "MS. VEE" HO (Dancer) Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Ms Vee started making her mark in the NYC dance scene in 2003. Vee has proudly been in Ephrat Asherie Dance since 2012. In her career, she’s also had the pleasure of working with such distinguished choreographers as Buddha Stretch, Rennie Harris, Luam, Maria Torres, and Bradley Rapier. Amongst her numerous TV, film, and stage credits, highlights include: ‘Hideaway’ Video by Kiesza, The Detour, VH1 Dear Mama TV special, Step Up 3D, Rennie Harris’ Legends of Hip Hop, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Sadler’s Wells Breaking Convention, Lincoln Center Out of Doors. Ms Vee is also a celebrated dance educator, and is on faculty at Broadway Dance Center, Pace University’s Commercial Dance BFA Program, and in 2017 became the first Hip Hop teacher at the world-renowned Juilliard School.

ANGEL LAU (Musician) is a Peruvian percussionists based in Hudson Valley, NY. While his foundation comes from his classical percussion studies at Purchase College, Angel’s interests in Afro-Peruvian and Brazilian music expanded into different folkloric and modern percussion styles from across the globe. Angel has performed and recorded with artists such as Kala and the Lost Tribe, Common Tongue, Birdland Latin Jazz Orchestra, Kelly Quigley, Wallace Roney Jr., Ted Piltzecker, Maria Quintanilla, and Leah Woods. In 2017, Angel had the opportunity to commission “Believe Me” a composition by Sergio Krakowski that involved Pandeiro and electronics. It was a reflection of the turmoil in the US government.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY RANJAN RAMCHANDANI (Musician) first encountered Brazilian music through Rio’s Carnaval samba. He then began a serious study of traditional samba and choro and the gamut of Brazilian percussion. He has shared the stage with the leading lights of contemporary Brazilian music, including Moyseis Marques, Rogério Souza, and Nailor Proveta, and leads his own choro group in NY. MATTHEW “MEGAWATT” WEST (Dancer) started dancing at the age of sixteen in Queens. Megawatt is an active part of NYC's underground dance community and teaches youth classes throughout the five boroughs.

Megawatt is a regular guest artist with Dorrance Dance and can be seen in Baz Lurhman’s Netflix series The Get Down and battling with his crew, the Mellow Animals.

OUSMANE WILES (Dancer) was born in Senegal, West Africa and trained and performed with his family’s dance company The Maimouna Keita School of African Dance from a young age. Raised in Brooklyn, New York, Omari is also a legendary member of the ballroom scene and founder and artistic director of Les Ballet Afrik. Omari has worked with many artists including Janet Jackson, Jidenna, Raashad Newsome and Wummi and is on faculty at Broadway Dance Center, Peridance Capezio Dance Center and the Maimouna Keita School of African Dance.

DONOVAN DORRANCE (Audio Engineer) hails from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he trained as a multi-instrumentalist before attending The University of North Carolina for a B.A. in philosophy. In 2014, he moved to Brooklyn to work for his sister’s dance company, Dorrance Dance, and pursue his passion for music; as co-music director, Dorrance has had the opportunity to compose original music and tour internationally with the company for the last six years. Outside of dance, Dorrance composes for film, theatre, podcasts, commercials, and weird passion projects. He frequently collaborates with students from the film and theatre programs at NYU and Columbia and creates media content for Ephrat Asherie Dance. In 2016, he and Gregory Richardson received a New Music USA project grant to score Dorrance Dance's Myelination; they then released an album of the music under the moniker Prawn til Dante.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY MARK ERIC (Costume Designer) is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area and now resides in New York City, where he designs and constructs costumes. He trained as a fashion designer at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where he was recognized as the Critics’ Choice among his graduating class. After interning with Marchesa, he started designing eveningwear for several brands including Monique Lhuillier and Adrianna Papell before discovering his passion for costume design. Mark Eric has designed costumes for a diverse roster of choreographers including: Robert Battle, Darrell Grand Moultrie, Rennie Harris, Stefanie Batten Bland, Andrew McNicol, and Marguerite Donlon among others. He has costumed works for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, BalletX, TU Dance, and Nimbus Dance Works to name a few and is currently working on new works with Gregory Dawson for BalletX and Ephrat Asherie Dance.

She has been a resident designer at the Danspace Project at St. Marks Church for over 20 years and has toured extensively throughout the world. Kathy was honored to be included in Curtain Call: Celebrating 100 Years of Women in Design at the New York Performing Arts Library. She works regularly with many companies including Michelle Dorrance (Dorrance Dance), Joanna Kotze, David Parker (The Bang Group) Eiko & Koma, Rebecca Stenn, Mariana Valencia, Leonardo Sandoval (Music from the Sole) and Rebecca Davis.

AMY PAGE (Wardrobe) is a NY based Dance Costume Creator. She loves to work with creative individuals to hone their design ideas and make them a reality. Camille A. ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international

companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through offsite presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park.

To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists.
