“Why dance?”
I have asked myself this question time after time: why is dance so significant in my life, such that I would create a full length work all about it? My assistant Marlee posed a similar question in her college dissertation. “Is a two step revolutionary?” And it is in this question that I find the answers to my own.
Dance as an artform. Dance as a cultural practice. Dance, a universal language passed down from generation to generation as an oral history through physical movement.
Dance and its cousin music are the supreme holders of our human history. From the Coasts of Africa to the Courts of Europe, from Asia to the Americas and back again, every culture has a tradition of dance and music which reveal the story of the people of those lands. Generation upon generation pour their ancestral knowledge into the next in order to ensure that their story is told. Dance for celebration. Dance for entertainment. Dance for healing. Dance in all its forms is revolutionary, now more than ever. As our society abandons the collective in favor of individuality and factions, dance remains a space where its strength lies in the community - always best done with others. The Ensemble. The Corps de Ballet. The Dance Crew. No matter the form, there is always the collective, and it is my belief that people are at their best when we are participating in collective cooperation.
Echoes of the Studio is my love letter to dance and my dedication to the collective effort required to bring a dance to life. To be honest, I don’t know if the dance itself will stand the test of time; you, the audience, get to decide. But I’m clear that the process of creating this work was well worth the effort and is an experience that has elevated the artistry of everyone involved. Over the course of 5 months, the students had the opportunity to work with a choreographer and composer who were creating a work in real time, in a studio with stage lights and markings. This process involved in-depth discussions about the development of characters, how to use different steps to convey messages, and how to transform your studio training into a stage performance. By inviting alumni into the work, we had the opportunity to share knowledge across generations, helping these young professionals develop as artists and educators.
This work embodies my vision for dance. In a time where dance organizations and dance makers are fighting for survival, dancing is revolutionary and it is my sincerest hope for this art form - this cultural practice - that we continue to exert our collective effort to ensure the passing down of this legacy for generations to come.
Thank you to the dancers - students and alumni. Thank you to my fellow dance and music makers. Thank you to the people working behind the scenes. Thank you to the audience.
Each of us is an integral part of the ecosystem needed to not only keep dance alive, but to see it thrive. Through our collective efforts, there will be dance.
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Mission and Organization Background
BALLET TECH FOUNDATION INC . is committed to introducing New York City public school children to the beauty, integrity, and joy of dance. Annually, we provide the rigorous dance training necessary to fulfill and nurture students' intrinsic dance talents, all tuition free. We are developing the dancers and leaders of tomorrow by offering young people, who reflect the rich diversity of our city, a world class dance education and enrichment that encompasses a wide variety of genres of movement and choreography, alongside an academic education in collaboration with New York City Public Schools. Ballet Tech was founded in 1974 by choreographer Eliot Feld as a professional ballet company, then known as the Eliot Feld Ballet. Inspired by a group of rambunctious children traveling home from school on a NYC subway, Feld created a groundbreaking tuition-free school in 1978 to nurture the intrinsic dance talents of NYC public school students, training many to become members of his professional company. To allow for students to focus on their dance training without sacrificing their academic education, a partnership was formed with NYC Public Schools in 1995 to create Ballet Tech, The NYC Public School for Dance (NYCPSD), which provides enrolled students with a robust academic education alongside intensive dance training, all under one roof. While Feld’s professional company has since dissolved, the tuition-free NYCPSD continues to operate, and allows public school children from across NYC the opportunity to learn dance free of financial constraints. All of Ballet Tech’s dance education programs are offered at no cost to the participants. Ballet Tech’s three-tiered program structure begins for children in 2nd and 3rd grades who participate in the Ballet Tech Across New York enrichment program conducted at partner schools citywide. Students who show an aptitude and enthusiasm for dance are invited as 3rd graders to attend the Introduction to Ballet program, which has operated at Ballet Tech’s studios at 890 Broadway for over four decades. Qualifying students are then invited to enroll at the 4th – 8th grade NYCPSD for full-time training. Since 1978, Ballet Tech has shared the magic of dance with over 957,000 children in 674 public schools in NYC.

Ballet Tech Across New York and Auditions
Through Ballet Tech Across New York (BTANY), Teaching Artists from Ballet Tech travel to public elementary schools across NYC to engage 2nd and 3rd graders in a dance class that introduces them to the basic elements of dance. These tuition-free dance enrichment classes are intended for students of all abilities. Ballet Tech also holds auditions for prospective 4th grade students at 890 Broadway throughout the year.
introduction to ballet program
Twice per year, Ballet Tech holds a 6-week Introduction to Ballet program at its studios at 890 Broadway. Selected 3rd graders, identified via the BTANY program, are bused by NYC Public Schools from their local elementary schools to Ballet Tech once per week for a 75-minute beginner ballet class. Students who demonstrate the capacity for long-term study are invited to audition for enrollment at Ballet Tech’s full-time school, the New York City Public School for Dance.
new york city public school for dance: grades 4-8
The New York City Public School for Dance (NYCPSD) is a partnership between Ballet Tech and NYC Public Schools to provide enrolled 4th – 8th grade students with a robust academic education alongside intensive dance training, all under one roof. NYC Public Schools provides academic faculty, support staff, and the core academic curriculum; Ballet Tech provides quality dance training, dancewear, and transportation. The NYCPSD follows the public school calendar and dance classes take place during the regular school day. In addition to Ballet Technique, the dance curriculum includes Allegro, Audition Prep, Creative Movement, Horton, Jazz, Modern, Partnering, Pointe, Repertory, Tap, and Variations.
kids
dance
Middle school students at the NYCPSD perform in Kids Dance, Ballet Tech’s annual season at The Joyce Theater since 1994. Each year, the Kids Dance program includes choreography created especially for students by faculty and guest artists, as well as an Eliot Feld ballet to honor the legacy of Ballet Tech’s founder. Recent years have also featured an alumni contribution.
Impact
Through a scaffolding approach to learning from the beginning to advanced classes, the five years of rigorous dance training serve as both the bedrock and springboard for the students’ future pursuits, whether in dance or another field. Ballet Tech has fully prepared graduating 8th graders to benefit from a selection of public arts high schools, distinguished ballet academies, and public high schools with strong academic programs. The training at Ballet Tech increases their prospects of access and success in whatever direction they choose.

BALLET TECH COMMISSIONING PROJECT
The COMMISSIONING PROJECT was begun by founder Eliot Feld, who described it as follows:
For aspiring piano students there are Bach’s two and three-part inventions and Bartok’s Mikrokosmos, both designed to develop skills and refine evolving sensibilities. With that model in mind, Ballet Tech has resolved to build a library of new choreography imagined for and designed on emerging dancers. This will be a repertory of original dances, dreamed up and composed by boffo dance makers, for fledgling dancers to hone their skills and whet their imaginations. And, of course, intended to delight the eye and enchant the fancy of audiences of all ages.
Our 2026 addition is Echoes of the Studio (by Dionne Figgins).
The library includes works by Brian Brooks, Laura Careless, Julia Eichten, Eliot Feld, Dionne Figgins, John Heginbotham, Curtis Holland, Karisma Jay, Robert LaFosse, Men Ca, Brian Reeder, Ximena Salgado, Michael Snipe, and Stephanie Terasaki, Conner Bormann, and Riley O’Flynn.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION
The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 500 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION
VISION STATEMENT
The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.
We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.
To achieve this, we will:
• Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives;
• Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth;
• Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility;
• Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.
With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.
We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.
We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.
It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
