ABOUT THE PROGRAMS

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Dear friends, family, and lovers of dance,

It is my great honor to present UNITE!

From the moment I was a ballet student experiencing the magic of performances at The Joyce, I have been enamored with how close we all come to the heroes of the dance world. Taking a seat alongside a community of both dance champions and enthusiasts is a thrilling experience that we all collectively share.

Invited to curate this summer's Festival, I had a deep sense of excitement and terror. How the hell am I going to bring all of my ideas forward? Upon reflection with my Strategic Advisor, Sharon Patrick, the wonderful Joyce staff, and taking a few weeks to brainstorm and calm my nerves, I set out to assemble a wish list of repertoire and artists with whom I’ve shared a personal affinity with over the course of my career. Collaborators whose inspiration and talent strive for the pursuit of excellence in their daily craft and contributions to the art form.

Reaching for the moon to see if I could actually touch it, I longed to showcase works that evoke passion, elegance, and grace to celebrate the long bright line of ballet. With my community of distinguished artists – from five continents, nine esteemed companies, spanning four generations, and a beautiful array of ethnicities and experiences, we boldly unite, stepby-step, to celebrate our collective humanity through dance and music.

I extend endless gratitude beyond all of my dear friends onstage, to those in the pit, in production and support, and behind the scenes who wholeheartedly said “yes!” to join me in this very ambitious endeavor.

I sincerely thank each and every one of you for joining us for this thrilling moment!

Creative Director, Curator, & Co-Producer, UNITE Ballet Festival at The Joyce Theater

*The 2024 Edition of The Joyce Ballet Festival is a celebration of and by Calvin’s community of enduring trailblazers shaping the art form, composed of a diverse group of friends and artists that are both internationally recognized and emerging artists of our time.

Highlights of her career at ABT include countless world premieres and tours; an historic seventy-fifth anniversary gala; a performance at the White House; Galas at the Metropolitan Opera House with First Ladies Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan; and performing at opera houses and venues around the world. In addition to her work with ABT, she has been PSM or Production Coordinator for several choreographers and festivals, including Benjamin Millepied, Christopher Wheeldon, and Ballet Across America at the Kennedy Center Opera House. Additionally, Danielle has lectured and mentored young stage managers as an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University for MFA candidates and a Guest Lecturer at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and feels privileged to be working with Calvin and the international roster of dancers on UNITE at The Joyce.

CAROLYN WONG (Lighting Supervisor) is a New York-based lighting designer whose portfolio includes a diverse range of projects from intimate theatrical productions to internationally touring work. Favorites include Let Me Mingle Tears With Thee (Pacific Northwest Ballet / Jessica Lang), Come Through (a collaboration between TU Dance and Bon Iver), Rockin’ Road to Dublin (US Tour), Une Autre Passion (Le Ballet du Grande Théâtre de Genève/ Pontus Lidberg), Summer’s Winter Shadow (Ballet of Monte Carlo/ Pontus Lidberg). She is the Costume Supervisor for the Mark Morris Dance Group, where she builds costumes, maintains their repertory, and tours with the company. As a Wardrobe Supervisor, Amy oversees many productions at Lincoln Center, as well as many touring companies who grace The Joyce Theater stage. From Akram Khan Company to L.A. Dance Project, The Royal Ballet to MOMIX, her calm, capable presence though lightning fast quick changes and marathon loads of laundry bring a ray of sunshine to the backstage world. On Broadway, she has had the pleasure of dressing Tatiana Maslany in Network, as well as the cast of Hamilton. In the television world, she has worked as a costume fitter on seasons three, four, and five of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. She holds a BFA from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

Joyce Theater Productions (JTP) is the in-house producing entity for The Joyce Theater Foundation, Inc., formed to create original work for The Joyce’s stage and for worldwide touring. This initiative provides dance artists who have little or no formal management or infrastructure the means to create productions of the highest standards of excellence. The program also includes the Associate Company model, offering sustained producing, fiscal, and/or administrative management to companies that may require short or longer term support.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION

The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 475 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.

We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.

We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.

It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
