WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY AYODELE CASEL (Choreographer & Tap Dancer), one of The New York Times' "Biggest Breakout Stars of 2019" and "a tap dancer of fine-grained musicianship" (The New Yorker), was a 2019-2020 fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. Born in The Bronx and raised in Puerto Rico, Ayodele began her professional training at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. Her origins in theater and love for storytelling and tap dance have significantly contributed to the narrative nature of her work, which is rooted in the expression of identity, culture, language, and communication.

Ayodele is Artist in Residence at Little Island and is on the Artist Council for NY Pops Up!, a New York State lead initiative to jumpstart live performances in NYC. She is Resident Director, with Torya Beard, for Dance Lab New York's inaugural Tap Dance Project. Ayodele is also a featured tap dancer honoring the art form of tap on a 2021 US Postage Stamp to be released July 2021. Learn more about Ayodele at www.ayodelecasel.com.

RONALD K. BROWN (Guest Artist), raised in Brooklyn, NY, founded EVIDENCE, A Dance Company in 1985. He has worked with Mary Anthony Dance Theater, Jennifer Muller/The Works, as well as other choreographers and artists, and has been on the faculty of The Juilliard School.

Brown has set works on Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Jeune Ballet d’Afrique Noire, Ko-Thi Dance Company, Philadanco, Muntu Dance Theater of Chicago, Ballet Hispánico, TU Dance, and Malpaso Dance Company.

He has collaborated with such artists as composer/designer Omotayo Wunmi Olaiya, the late writer Craig G. Harris, director Ernie McClintock’s Jazz Actors Theater, choreographers Patricia Hoffbauer and Rokiya Kone, composers Robert Een, Oliver Lake, Bernadette Speech, David Simons, and Don Meissner, and musicians Jason Moran, Arturo O'Farrill, and Meshell Ndegeocello.

Brown is the recipient of the 2020 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award. His other awards and recognitions include the AUDELCO Award for his choreography in Regina Taylor’s award-winning play Crowns, two Black Theater Alliance Awards, and a Fred & Adele Astaire Award for Outstanding Choreography in the Tony Award winning Broadway

Brown was named Def Dance Jam Workshop 2000 Mentor of the Year and has received the Doris Duke Artist Award, NYC City Center Fellowship, Scripps/ADF Award, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, National Endowment for the Arts Choreographers Fellowship, New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, United States Artists Fellowship, a New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Award, Dance Magazine Award, and The Ailey Apex Award.

Brown is Co-Artistic Director of Restoration ART Youth Arts Academy Pre-Professional Training Program / Restoration Dance Youth Ensemble and a member of Stage Directors & Choreographers Society.

AMANDA CASTRO (Tap Dancer), born in Brooklyn and raised in New Haven, CT, is a multidisciplinary artist with her artistry rooted in rhythm with her soul in tap. Castro is a graduate of California Institute of the Arts where she studied under Glen Eddy of Nederlands Dans Theatre and Andre Tyson from Ailey Company. Once a principal dancer of the renowned company, Urban Bush Women-touring theatres such as The Kennedy Center & The John Anson Ford Theatre, to starring in musical theatre productions of Singing In the Rain in the role of Kathy Seldon, Jared Grimes' 42nd Street, “atomic” performances of Glimmerglass Festival’s West Side Story (NYT ‘18) and performing for over 100,000+ audience members in the role of Anita in West Side Story at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Amanda continues to pursue the journey of deepening her practice as a rhythmic storyteller and remaining a vessel for the stories that push humanity forward.

NAOMI FUNAKI (Tap Dancer) began learning tap dancing from Noboru Satou in Tokyo, Japan and is currently living in New York as an IISP student of Steps on Broadway. She has performed with Caleb Teicher & Company and in the debut show of Dorrance Dance’s second company, and at the first “Tap Family Reunion.”

She is an alumna of The School at Jacob’s Pillow Tap Dance program (2017). She also has danced at the Vail Dance Festival, Fall For Dance (New York City Center), Works & Process (Guggenheim), and the Tokyo International Tap Dance Festival.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY CRYSTAL MONEE HALL (Guest Artist) is thrilled to be a part of Chasing Magic at The Joyce. A singersongwriter and vocal arranger and producer, Crystal works with many acclaimed artists including Ben Platt, Kristen Chenoweth, Renee Elise Goldsberry, and Thomas Rhett. JOHN MANZARI (Tap Dancer) is an Ovation Award and Helen Hayes Award nominated performer, teacher, and choreographer. A multifaceted artist, he is best known for tap dancing. Stage credits include 42nd Street, Maurice Hines: Tappin’ Thru Life, The Wiz is 40: A Celebration in Dance and Music, Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies, and Apollo Club Harlem. Television credits include The View, PBS’s special Michael Feinstein at the Rainbow Room, The Jerry Lewis Telethon, and the season seven finale of So You Think You Can Dance. Concerts include A Little Old, A Little New at Birdland & Jacob’s Pillow. John can be seen in the documentary about his mentor titled Maurice Hines: Bring Them Back. ANTHONY MORIGERATO (Tap Dancer) is a tap dancer, producer, director, content creator, writer, and Emmy nominated choreographer. Anthony is the executive producer and artistic director for AM Dance Productions which has produced live theatrical performances and film in NYC since 2006. AM Dance Productions, short films include The Text (2015), The Subtext (2018), When Snow Falls (2020), and Green Riot (2020). AM Dance Productions live theatrical shows include AM Dance Project (20062008), Matt and Anthony (2009), and flood (in the dark corner) (2017). WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY ARTURO O’FARRILL (Guest Artist) is a pianist, composer, and educator, was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. He received his formal musical education at the Manhattan School of Music and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. Arturo’s professional career began with the Carla Bley Band and continued as a solo performer with a wide spectrum of artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, and Harry Belafonte. In 2007, he founded the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the performance, education, and preservation of Afro Latin music. An avid supporter of all the Arts, Arturo has performed with Ballet Hispanico, Ron Brown’s EVIDENCE Dance company, and the Malpaso Dance Company, for whom he has written two ballets.

Arturo’s well-reviewed and highly praised “Afro-Latin Jazz Suite” from the current album CUBA: The Conversation Continues (Motéma) took the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition as well as the 2016 Latin Grammy Award (his fifth Grammy) for Best Latin Jazz Recording. In addition, his composition “Three Revolutions” from the album Familia-Tribute to Chico and Bebo also received the Best Instrumental Composition Grammy in 2018.

SENFU STONEY (Guest Artist) is a mixed PanamanianBahemian-American drummer, producer, composer, singer, teacher, husband, and father from Brooklyn, New York. Born and raised in Bedstuy, Senfu grew up at the epicenter of many intersecting cultures, surrounded by music and rooted in spiritual community.

He made a name for himself as a musical prodigy, drumming with the Asase Yaa African American Dance Theater and other esteemed ensembles including the Forces of Nature, Timbalada, and the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. As one of the preeminent drummers in the United States and the world, Senfu has toured and collaborated with living legends like Ms. Lauryn Hill, OutKast, Diddy, Cynthia Erivo, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, and currently with Leslie Odom Jr., and more.

Senfu is currently creative original music, touring, streaming live drum sessions, hosting a new podcast, and working on a series of digital drumming lessons to uplift and empower kids, everywhere.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY ANNASTASIA VICTORY (Guest Artist) is an internationally acclaimed Pianist-Composer, Award Winning Music Director, Arranger, Conductor, Orchestrator, and Recording Artist. Her work with 3 Mo' Divas, a live PBS special (NAACP Image Award Nominee), earned her the nickname “Diva of the Keys.”

She has arranged and recorded with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Grammy/Tony Winner Leslie Odom Jr. on three of his hit albums, Cynthia Erivo “Live from Lincoln Center Stars in Concert” on PBS (Music Director / Arranger / Orchestrator), as well as collaborating with artists such as Billy Porter, Tituss Burgess, Savion Glover, Jake Gyllenhaal, Brooke Shields, Renée Fleming, Joshua Bell, Zara Larsson, Deborah Cox, Joe Iconis, Alex Newell, Santino Fontana, Ayodele Casel, Morgan James, Ryan Silverman, and many more.

ABOUT THE CREATIVE TEAM TORYA BEARD (Director) is a New York-based director, creative consultant/strategist, choreographer, and producer specializing in dance and theater. Her curvy professional path reflects a deep curiosity about and belief in the boundless possibilities at the intersection of creativity, artistic expression, and social justice. After studying dance at The University of Michigan, she toured with Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, David Rousseve/Reality, The Kevin Wynn Collection, Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, Earl Mosley's Diversity of Dance, Deeply Rooted Chicago Dance Theatre, and Donald Byrd's The Harlem Nutcracker, among others. Torya was a featured dancer in the film "Idlewild" and made her Broadway debut in Disney's The Lion King.

It has been an absolute joy to collaborate with Ayodele Casel on various projects. Among them; "Ayodele Casel + Arturo O'Farrill" at The Joyce Theater (Creative Director/Assistant Choreographer), "Diary of A Tap Dancer V.4" (Director), "While I Have The Floor" (Producer), City Center Encores! Off-Center's "Really Rosie" (Assistant Choreographer), "Rooted" for the inaugural five-borough tour of New York City Center's On The Move (Creative Director), and Diary of a Tap Dancer V.6: Us, commissioned by New York City Center (Co-curator/Co-director). She and Ayodele are Resident Directors of Dance Lab New York's inaugural Tap Project.

ABOUT THE CREATIVE TEAM TEMMA RICHARDSON (Wardrobe Stylist) (Thel Rich) is a native New Yorker, with an eye for Fashion and a love for Costumes. Graduating with a BA from Iona College with a concentration in Public Relations. Temma has always had a hand in the entertainment industry.

After graduation she started her career with NBC Universal, where she discovered her love for styling. This experience drove her to go back to school at The Fashion Institute of Technology, where she studied to earn a certification in Costume Design & Fashion Styling. KURT CSOLAK (Director of Photography, Editor) is the son of a drummer and performing arts school owner.

Kurt grew up surrounded by the arts and naturally gravitated towards tap dancing. Kurt has performed on stages all over the world and on national TV, including NBC’s World of Dance, Tap Dogs international tour, 42nd Street, and with Dorrance Dance. As a filmmaker, Kurt is an award winning director, cinematographer, and editor that has been producing and directing numerous commercial, music video, industrial, and film projects over the last 10 years.

He is the founder and creative director of Solarc Productions, a media production company based in NYC, producing visionary work for some of the top Fortune 500 companies. On a mission to merge his passions and showcase tap dance to the world in the highest quality possible, he is honored to have been asked by Ayodele and Torya to film and edit Chasing Magic for The Joyce.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over three decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international

companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through offsite presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park.

To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists.
