ABOUT THE COMPANY

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, Ailey II is universally renowned for merging the spirit and energy of the country’s finest early-career dance talent with the passion and creative vision of today’s outstanding and emerging choreographers.

Founded in 1974 as the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, the company serves as a bridge between the studio and the stage for these artists, offering unique opportunities to refine their technique while gaining invaluable performing and teaching experience during their two-year tenure. Ailey II members have gone on to pursue successful careers as dancers, teachers, and choreographers with various dance companies, on Broadway, television, and in film.

The company embodies Alvin Ailey’s pioneering mission to establish an extended cultural community that provides dance performances, training, and community programs for all people. Under the leadership of Sylvia Waters, who served as its artistic director for 38 seasons, Ailey II flourished into one of the most popular modern dance companies, combining a rigorous touring schedule with extensive community outreach.

Today, with Francesca Harper at the helm and in her third season as Artistic Director of Ailey II, she brings a fresh perspective to Mr. Ailey’s legacy while nurturing new creative voices and propelling the company forward.

This program is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY

ALVIN AILEY (Founder) was born on January 5, 1931, in Rogers, TX. His experiences of life in the rural South would later inspire some of his most memorable works. He was introduced to dance during junior high school in Los Angeles, and his formal dance training began with his friend Carmen de Lavallade taking him to Lester Horton’s classes. Horton, the founder of one of the first racially integrated dance companies in the United States, became a mentor for Mr. Ailey. After Horton’s death in 1953, Mr. Ailey became director of the Lester Horton Dance Theater and began to choreograph his own works. In 1958, he founded Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He established The Ailey School in 1969 and formed Ailey II in 1974. Throughout his lifetime he was awarded numerous distinctions, including the Kennedy Center Honor in 1988. In 2014, he posthumously received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor. When Mr. Ailey died on December 1, 1989, The New York Times said of him, “you didn’t need to have known [him] personally to have been touched by his humanity, enthusiasm, and exuberance and his courageous stand for multi-racial brotherhood.”

FRANCESCA HARPER (Artistic Director) began her professional dance career with Dance Theatre of Harlem. She was also a member of Ballett Frankfurt from 1991-1999 under the direction of William Forsythe, and she has performed on Broadway in productions including Fosse, All Shook Up, The Color Purple, Sweet Charity, and Sophisticated Ladies, and was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical by Broadway.com for her role as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill. Ms. Harper created her first play, 50 minutes with Harriet and Phillis, produced by Anna Deavere Smith, with her aunt, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Margo Jefferson, and Paul Miller, a.k.a DJ Spooky. In 2014, she debuted her critically acclaimed one-woman show, The Look of Feeling, as a writer, actor, dancer, and vocalist. She is also the writer, producer, composer, and narrator of the documentary film To Lillian (2021). Ms. Harper has choreographed works for companies including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, Dance Theater of Harlem, Hubbard Street II, and Tanz Graz, as well as The Francesca Harper Project, which she had founded in 2005. Her television and film credits include appearances on Boardwalk Empire, Late Night with David Letterman, and The Oprah Winfrey Show. She served as ballet consultant for the motion picture Black Swan and was featured in Zinnias – The Life of Clementine Hunter, directed by Robert Wilson. In 2013, Ms. Harper received a Living History Award during Black History Month from Long Island University and the Innovation and Technology Award for her choreography for Fashion Week with designer Louis Vuitton. She also served as co-director and choreographer for the musical Rose’s War and as movement director for Tommy Hilfiger and Zendaya for their fashion show at the Apollo Theater in 2019. Ms. Harper was the creator and directorial consultant for 16 world premiere virtual films. Her latest works include a new creation for Wendy Whelan, Associate Artistic Director of New York City Ballet, and poet Marc Bamuthi Joseph. Currently, Ms. Harper is engaged as Executive Producer with Sony Pictures on a series in development, and recently she received her Masters of Fine Arts degree from Goddard College.

LEADERSHIP

WHO'S WHO IN THE COMPANY

SYLVIA WATERS (Artistic Director Emerita) was personally selected by Alvin Ailey in 1974 as Artistic Director of Ailey II and led the company for 38 years. She attended The Juilliard School, where she worked with Donald McKayle’s company, and with a young Hava Kohav—who later became an actress and Academy Award nominee—performing very often to widely populated audiences of the entire New York Dance community at the YMHA. After receiving her B.S. from Juilliard, she moved to Paris, where she appeared regularly on television. She toured in the European company of Black Nativity and worked with Michel Descombey, then director of the Paris Opera Ballet, as well as Milko Šparembleck. She also performed in Donald McKayle's European production of Black New World and worked with Maurice Béjart’s company performing in Brussels and at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City. In 1968, Ms. Waters joined Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and toured with the Company until assuming leadership of Ailey II. She has received honorary doctorates from the State University of New York at Oswego and The Juilliard School, and she has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts. Ms. Waters is a recipient of the Legacy Award as part of the 20th Annual IABD Festival, Syracuse University’s Women of Distinction Award, a Dance Magazine Award, and a “Bessie” Award.

BENNETT RINK (Executive Director) became Executive Director in 2013. Mr. Rink first joined Ailey as Manager of Special Events in 1994, became Development Director in 1998, and then worked as Senior Director of Development and External Affairs from 2007 to 2012. In his tenure overseeing Ailey’s development and fundraising efforts, Mr. Rink led a $75 million capital campaign supporting Ailey’s first permanent home, The Joan Weill Center for Dance, which opened in 2005 and attracts more than 200,000 visitors each year. When the Company celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008, Mr. Rink supervised an 18-month celebration, including events, promotions, collaborations, and special performances, bringing public awareness of the Ailey organization to new heights. Mr. Rink also oversaw The Next Step Campaign, which grew the organization’s endowment to $50 million. During his tenure as Executive Director, the Company has deepened its presence in New York City by establishing an annual spring season to complement its New York City Center winter season, while also extending its role as America’s “Cultural Ambassador to the World” with tours to Africa, Europe, and South America. In order to reach audiences beyond live performances, the Company has broadened its commitment to creating film and digital content, including Ailey All Access, an online streaming series featuring full-length works from the repertory, Ailey Extension classes, and other specially created content. Mr. Rink has extended the reach and impact of Ailey’s educational offerings as well, including the creation of new curricula and programs that reach across generations, from elementary school children to senior citizens. To meet the growing demand for its educational offerings, Ailey unveiled the Elaine Wynn and Family Education Wing in 2017, providing much-needed additional studios and classroom space. The building now comprises 87,000 square feet and is the largest destination for dance in New York City. Mr. Rink is a graduate of Syracuse University and holds a BFA in theater.

The Parents Annual Fund provides ongoing support for The Ailey School, enabling its vital programs to flourish, ensuring the next generation of dancers continues to receive high-caliber training, professional opportunities, and the support services necessary for success. In keeping dance education affordable, School tuition covers only a fraction of the actual expenses of The Ailey School. As a non-profit organization, we look to parents, true ambassadors of The Ailey School, to help us fill the gap! Leadership gift opportunities are available. Please contact the Development Office at 212-405-9033 for more information.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION

The Joyce Theater Foundation ("The Joyce," Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for more than four decades. Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 475 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (1st–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 300 performances for audiences of over 100,000. Visit Joyce.org for more information.

ABOUT THE JOYCE THEATER FOUNDATION

VISION STATEMENT

The Joyce Theater Foundation is committed to fostering and supporting a diverse and inclusive environment, both on and off stage. We embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms, and value the rich experiences and perspectives that arise from differences in race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and cognitive and physical ability.

We strive to counteract the social injustices and racism that exist within our communities, our nation, and our world. Our aim as an organization is to embody the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

To achieve this, we will:

• Create and implement proactive diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives;

• Establish and maintain a culture of safe sharing, intentional listening, learning, and growth;

• Engage with and support disenfranchised communities by sharing information and resources and ensuring accessibility;

• Develop metrics and conduct regular reviews of our programs and policies to hold ourselves accountable and shift as neededs.

With these goals in place and our Vision Statement in mind, we are dedicated to the continued learning and growth needed to foster an inclusive environment for all. This is an ongoing process and by nature will be an evolving statement.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Joyce Theater operates on the Lenape island of Manhahtaan (Mannahatta) and acknowledges that it was founded upon the stolen land and erasure of many Indigenous communities. This acknowledgement demonstrates our institution’s commitment to the process of dismantling the legacies of colonialism and cultural imperialism.

We acknowledge the ongoing violence towards Indigenous people through systemic inequality. We pay our respect to the Indigenous peoples who lived and continue to live upon this land, and whose rich history, artistic practices, and spirituality are tied to this land. It is within our responsibility as a cultural institution and our commitment to diversity and inclusion to embody a commitment to Indigenous rights and cultural equity.

We sincerely invite you as an audience member to take a moment to reflect on the history and legacy of displacement, migration, and settlement.

It is our intention to work with local Native American arts councils to better inform our land acknowledgment practices and anticipate that it will evolve over time.
