A Letter From Linda Shelton, Executive Director, The Joyce Theater On behalf of The Joyce Theater, I am pleased to welcome Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra to the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center.

This engagement marks the company’s long-awaited return and first full New York season in six years. Led by former New York City Ballet principal dancer Peter Boal since 2005, the heralded company brings two mixed-bill programs and a gala celebrating its extensive repertory of choreographic voices.

I am honored to have been a part of Peter Boal’s artistic journey, from his first artistic debut in 2003 performing two commissioned solos by Wendy Perron and Molissa Fenley, to 2010 with his first endeavor presenting work as the Artistic Director of PNB, featuring works by Twyla Tharp and Benjamin Millepied. I have long admired Peter’s vision and am thrilled to now be presenting the incredible artists of PNB. The company’s arrival comes at a particularly noteworthy time, as PNB celebrates its 50th anniversary and The Joyce Theater celebrates its 40th.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, PNB performs Ulysses Dove’s Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven (Odes to Love and Loss) and Crystal Pite’s Plot Point, alongside PNB Resident Choreographer and recently appointed Artistic Director of Charlotte Ballet, Alejandro Cerrudo’s Little mortal jump, and Twyla Tharp’s Waiting at the Station. The Joyce is pleased to host our annual gala here at Lincoln Center, accompanied by the much anticipated New York premiere of Waiting at the Station and George Balanchine’s Diamonds, the choreographer’s glittering tribute to his youth in St. Petersburg.

It is thrilling to present this acclaimed company at the David H. Koch Theater, where, since 2012, The Joyce has programmed distinguished companies such as Nederlands Dans Theater, Ballet Preljocaj, The National Ballet of Canada, The Royal Ballet, Twyla Tharp Dance, The Joffrey Ballet, and Miami City Ballet, and artist Sylvie Guillem.

During its 48-week season, The Joyce attracts dance lovers worldwide to its theater in Chelsea, where it is home to international, national, and New York–based companies. In the coming months, you will have the opportunity to see more dance artists expanding the ballet tradition, including Christopher Williams and The Sarasota Ballet. The summer season continues to celebrate The Joyce’s ongoing commitment to bringing international dance to New York audiences, showcased by the return of New Zealand’s Black Grace, and to commissioning works by renowned artists. Diamonds is George Balanchine’s homage to his native St. Petersburg, Russia. The ballet pays homage to Balanchine’s youth: the grandeur of St. Petersburg, the Maryinsky Theater, and the Imperial Ballet, where Balanchine trained. Echoes of Petipa’s Swan Lake and Raymonda abound, and the centerpiece of the ballet is an intimate pas de deux, potent in its chivalrous reserve, for the ballerina and her cavalier. At its end, the entire cast joins the principal couple for a gloriously spirited polonaise.

Diamonds is the third and final ballet of Balanchine’s Jewels. At its New York City Ballet premiere in 1967, Jewels was touted as the first “plotless full-length ballet.” The story goes that Balanchine was inspired to create the ballet after a visit to the New York jeweler Claude Arpels of Van Cleef and Arpels. While each of its three ballets—Emeralds, Rubies, and Diamonds— may not follow any definitive narrative, like real gems themselves, each can be viewed in multiple ways and from a variety of angles. The great American dance critic, Arlene Croce, described Jewels as “unsurpassed as a Balanchine primer, incorporating in a single evening every important article of faith to which this choreographer subscribed and a burst of heresy, too.” Balanchine himself, in his typical noncommittal way, stated, “Of course, I have always liked jewels; after all, I am an Oriental, from Georgia in the Caucasus. I like the color of gems, the beauty of stones, and it was wonderful to see how our costume workshop, under Karinska’s direction, came so close to the quality of real stones (which were of course too heavy for the dancers to wear!).”

Premiere: September 27, 2013; Pacific Northwest Ballet The 2013 world premiere of Twyla Tharp’s Waiting at the Station was generously underwritten by Peter & Peggy Horvitz.

Waiting at the Station is a short narrative ballet set to a collection of compositions—both old and new—by R&B artist Allen Toussaint. Scenic and costume designs by Santo Loquasto set the scene in 1940’s New Orleans.

The story follows one man as he attempts to connect with his son and pass on his steps before he must surrender to the three gilded Fates that seek him out. The ensemble dances upstage for much of the work. They are a living frieze, providing background rhythm and dramatic tableau as two couples gambol, waltz, spar, and swing through a sampling of society’s many small conflicts. After the Father dances his goodbyes and recedes upstage with the three Fates, his Son leads the jazz funeral procession—a celebration of both life and death through music and dance. An epilogue follows, wherein the Father returns briefly to tidy a few loose ends and conduct the finale before boarding his last train.

About The Pacific Northwest Ballet Founded in 1972, Pacific Northwest Ballet is one of the largest and most highly regarded ballet companies in the United States. In July 2005, Peter Boal became artistic director, succeeding Kent Stowell and Francia Russell, artistic directors since 1977. The Company of nearly 50 dancers presents more than 100 performances each year of full-length and mixed repertory ballets at Marion Oliver McCaw Hall in Seattle and on tour. The Company has toured to Europe, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Canada, and throughout the United States, with celebrated appearances at Jacob’s Pillow and in New York City and Washington DC. Consistently lauded as “the best ballet band in America” by The New York Times and other critics, the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra is an accomplished group of musicians, led by the skilled baton of Emil de Cou. PNB’s artistic leaders have always prioritized live music as an integral part of the ballet artform and consider collaboration with the Orchestra to be a key pillar of PNB’s success. After two years of pandemic-era chamber groups and virtual presentations, Seattle audiences reveled in the return of the Orchestra to live performances this season.

Founded in 1974, PNB School is recognized as one of the top ballet training institutions in the United States and offers a complete, professional curriculum to more than 1,000 students. With locations in Seattle and Bellevue, Washington, the School maintains a faculty of more than 20 instructors, each with extensive performing backgrounds. PNB School’s Professional Division offers advanced instruction for those students planning a professional dance career. PNB seeks to reflect the diversity of our community by providing access and opportunity to talented students. The School’s DanceChance program offers students in local partner schools the opportunity to study classical ballet on full scholarship.

PNB’s Community Education Programs reach students and teachers of all backgrounds and experience levels through in-school programming, visits to PNB studios, and specially-priced matinees. PNB also offers unique audience education opportunities for adults wishing to expand their theater experiences.

Peter Boal (Artistic Director, Pacific Northwest Ballet; Director, PNB School) was born in Bedford, New York, and received his training at the School of American Ballet while performing children’s roles with New York City Ballet. George Balanchine invited Peter to join the company as an apprentice in 1983, and he continued to dance for NYCB until his retirement in 2005, when he moved to Seattle. He also served as a faculty member at SAB. In addition to directing PNB School, Peter teaches the Professional Division and Company. He has staged works by George Balanchine, Ulysses Dove, and Jerome Robbins for PNB, PNB School, and other companies.

Emil de Cou (Music Director & Principal Conductor) debuted with the National Symphony Orchestra in 2000, after which he joined the orchestra as associate conductor.

He has remained a regular figure at the Kennedy Center since his first performances there in 1988. He was conductor of the American Ballet Theatre for eight seasons, made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2006, and appears regularly with many of the country’s

David H. Koch Theater leading orchestras. For his ongoing work with NASA, de Cou was awarded the agency’s Exceptional Public Achievement Medal, the first musician to be so honored. He makes his home in San Francisco and Seattle with his husband, conductor Leif Bjaland.

Christina Siemens (Principal Company Pianist & Piano Soloist) joined PNB in 2003, was promoted to Company Pianist in 2008 and Principal Company Pianist in 2018. Her extensive solo keyboard repertoire at PNB includes Variations Serieuses, Concerto DSCH, The Four Temperaments, among many others. Ms. Siemens also performs with Seattle Symphony Orchestra and PNB as a soprano soloist, and with Seattle’s studio recording industry. Ms. Siemens enjoys ongoing engagements at home and on tour with the Northwest Boychoir.

As chamber musician, she is frequently featured on the Auburn Symphony Orchestra Chamber Series, as well as the St. Andrew’s Chamber Series and Haller Lake Chamber Series.

Josh Archibald-Seiffer (Conductor, Company Pianist, & Piano Soloist) has conducted PNB performances of Swan Lake, Cinderella, and The Nutcracker as well as world-premieres by Emmanuel Witzthum and Chicago-based rock band OHMME. Archibald-Seiffer has also worked extensively in the Seattle musical theater community. Production highlights include West Side Story; Kiss Me, Kate; Ragtime (The 5th Avenue Theatre) and Matilda (Village Theatre). He holds an MM from the University of Washington and a BA from Stanford University, both in Music Composition.

About The Joyce Theater Foundation The Joyce Theater Foundation (“The Joyce,” Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over four decades.

Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000 patrons.

A Letter From Linda Shelton, Executive Director, The Joyce Theater On behalf of The Joyce Theater, I am pleased to welcome Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra to the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center.

This engagement marks the company’s long-awaited return and first full New York season in six years. Led by former New York City Ballet principal dancer Peter Boal since 2005, the heralded company brings two mixed-bill programs and a gala celebrating its extensive repertory of choreographic voices.

I am honored to have been a part of Peter Boal’s artistic journey, from his first artistic debut in 2003 performing two commissioned solos by Wendy Perron and Molissa Fenley, to 2010 with his first endeavor presenting work as the Artistic Director of PNB, featuring works by Twyla Tharp and Benjamin Millepied. I have long admired Peter’s vision and am thrilled to now be presenting the incredible artists of PNB. The company’s arrival comes at a particularly noteworthy time, as PNB celebrates its 50th anniversary and The Joyce Theater celebrates its 40th.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, PNB performs Ulysses Dove’s Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven (Odes to Love and Loss) and Crystal Pite’s Plot Point, alongside PNB Resident Choreographer and recently appointed Artistic Director of Charlotte Ballet, Alejandro Cerrudo’s Little mortal jump, and Twyla Tharp’s Waiting at the Station. The Joyce is pleased to host our annual gala here at Lincoln Center, accompanied by the much anticipated New York premiere of Waiting at the Station and George Balanchine’s Diamonds, the choreographer’s glittering tribute to his youth in St. Petersburg.

It is thrilling to present this acclaimed company at the David H. Koch Theater, where, since 2012, The Joyce has programmed distinguished companies such as Nederlands Dans Theater, Ballet Preljocaj, The National Ballet of Canada, The Royal Ballet, Twyla Tharp Dance, The Joffrey Ballet, and Miami City Ballet, and artist Sylvie Guillem.

During its 48-week season, The Joyce attracts dance lovers worldwide to its theater in Chelsea, where it is home to international, national, and New York–based companies. In the coming months, you will have the opportunity to see more dance artists expanding the ballet tradition, including Christopher Williams and The Sarasota Ballet. The summer season continues to celebrate The Joyce’s ongoing commitment to bringing international dance to New York audiences, showcased by the return of New Zealand’s Black Grace, and to commissioning works by renowned artists. Set for six dancers in white unitards and subtitled Odes to Love and Loss, Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven was choreographed for the Royal Swedish Ballet in 1993 and received its U.S. premiere in 1996 at the For the Love of Dove benefit in New York. According to New York Times dance critic Jennifer Dunning, Dove “suggests a broken flow of relationships by placing his solos and duets in a chain of white spotlights.” Dove himself explained, “To me, Arvo Pärt’s music can send souls to heaven. I want to tell an experience in movement, a story without words, and create a poetic monument over people I loved.” The musical score, Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten, is the same used by Susan Marshall for her aerial pas de deux, Kiss.

“Plot Point was instigated by the opportunity to work with a live orchestra. Faced with the task of choosing music, I gravitated to film scores: music that is built to support action. A film score makes space for dialogue and provides the moving image with emotional tone and tension, making it also excellent music for dance. I am a fan of Bernard Herrmann, so choosing the composer was relatively easy. I eventually settled on his hauntingly beautiful score for Hitchcock’s Psycho.”

“With cinematic music as my starting-off point, my thoughts turned to the structures of screenplay, and the techniques of story. For Plot Point, I wasn’t compelled to deliver a specific narrative. I was more intrigued by the subject of screenwriting itself, and by our insatiable need for story.”

Waiting at the Station is a short narrative ballet set to a collection of compositions—both old and new—by R&B artist Allen Toussaint. Scenic and costume designs by Santo Loquasto set the scene in 1940’s New Orleans.

The story follows one man as he attempts to connect with his son and pass on his steps before he must surrender to the three gilded Fates that seek him out. The ensemble dances upstage for much of the work. They are a living frieze, providing background rhythm and dramatic tableau as two couples gambol, waltz, spar, and swing through a sampling of society’s many small conflicts. After the Father dances his goodbyes and recedes upstage with the three Fates, his Son leads the jazz funeral procession—a celebration of both life and death through music and dance. An epilogue follows, wherein the Father returns briefly to tidy a few loose ends and conduct the finale before boarding his last train.

About The Pacific Northwest Ballet Founded in 1972, Pacific Northwest Ballet is one of the largest and most highly regarded ballet companies in the United States. In July 2005, Peter Boal became artistic director, succeeding Kent Stowell and Francia Russell, artistic directors since 1977. The Company of nearly 50 dancers presents more than 100 performances each year of full-length and mixed repertory ballets at Marion Oliver McCaw Hall in Seattle and on tour. The Company has toured to Europe, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Canada, and throughout the United States, with celebrated appearances at Jacob’s Pillow and in New York City and Washington DC. Consistently lauded as “the best ballet band in America” by The New York Times and other critics, the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra is an accomplished group of musicians, led by the skilled baton of Emil de Cou. PNB’s artistic leaders have always prioritized live music as an integral part of the ballet artform and consider collaboration with the Orchestra to be a key pillar of PNB’s success. After two years of pandemic-era chamber groups and virtual presentations, Seattle audiences reveled in the return of the Orchestra to live performances this season.

Founded in 1974, PNB School is recognized as one of the top ballet training institutions in the United States and offers a complete, professional curriculum to more than 1,000 students. With locations in Seattle and Bellevue, Washington, the School maintains a faculty of more than 20 instructors, each with extensive performing backgrounds. PNB School’s Professional Division offers advanced instruction for those students planning a professional dance career. PNB seeks to reflect the diversity of our community by providing access and opportunity to talented students. The School’s DanceChance program offers students in local partner schools the opportunity to study classical ballet on full scholarship.

PNB’s Community Education Programs reach students and teachers of all backgrounds and experience levels through in-school programming, visits to PNB studios, and specially-priced matinees. PNB also offers unique audience education opportunities for adults wishing to expand their theater experiences.

Peter Boal (Artistic Director, Pacific Northwest Ballet; Director, PNB School) was born in Bedford, New York, and received his training at the School of American Ballet while performing children’s roles with New York City Ballet. George Balanchine invited Peter to join the company as an apprentice in 1983, and he continued to dance for NYCB until his retirement in 2005, when he moved to Seattle. He also served as a faculty member at SAB. In addition to directing PNB School, Peter teaches the Professional Division and Company. He has staged works by George Balanchine, Ulysses Dove, and Jerome Robbins for PNB, PNB School, and other companies.

Emil de Cou (Music Director & Principal Conductor) debuted with the National Symphony Orchestra in 2000, after which he joined the orchestra as associate conductor.

He has remained a regular figure at the Kennedy Center since his first performances there in 1988. He was conductor of the American Ballet Theatre for eight seasons, made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2006, and appears regularly with many of the country’s

David H. Koch Theater leading orchestras. For his ongoing work with NASA, de Cou was awarded the agency’s Exceptional Public Achievement Medal, the first musician to be so honored. He makes his home in San Francisco and Seattle with his husband, conductor Leif Bjaland.

Christina Siemens (Principal Company Pianist & Piano Soloist) joined PNB in 2003, was promoted to Company Pianist in 2008 and Principal Company Pianist in 2018. Her extensive solo keyboard repertoire at PNB includes Variations Serieuses, Concerto DSCH, The Four Temperaments, among many others. Ms. Siemens also performs with Seattle Symphony Orchestra and PNB as a soprano soloist, and with Seattle’s studio recording industry. Ms. Siemens enjoys ongoing engagements at home and on tour with the Northwest Boychoir.

As chamber musician, she is frequently featured on the Auburn Symphony Orchestra Chamber Series, as well as the St. Andrew’s Chamber Series and Haller Lake Chamber Series.

Josh Archibald-Seiffer (Conductor, Company Pianist, & Piano Soloist) has conducted PNB performances of Swan Lake, Cinderella, and The Nutcracker as well as world-premieres by Emmanuel Witzthum and Chicago-based rock band OHMME. Archibald-Seiffer has also worked extensively in the Seattle musical theater community. Production highlights include West Side Story; Kiss Me, Kate; Ragtime (The 5th Avenue Theatre) and Matilda (Village Theatre). He holds an MM from the University of Washington and a BA from Stanford University, both in Music Composition.

About The Joyce Theater Foundation The Joyce Theater Foundation (“The Joyce,” Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over four decades.

Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000 patrons.

A Letter From Linda Shelton, Executive Director, The Joyce Theater On behalf of The Joyce Theater, I am pleased to welcome Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra to the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center.

This engagement marks the company’s long-awaited return and first full New York season in six years. Led by former New York City Ballet principal dancer Peter Boal since 2005, the heralded company brings two mixed-bill programs and a gala celebrating its extensive repertory of choreographic voices.

I am honored to have been a part of Peter Boal’s artistic journey, from his first artistic debut in 2003 performing two commissioned solos by Wendy Perron and Molissa Fenley, to 2010 with his first endeavor presenting work as the Artistic Director of PNB, featuring works by Twyla Tharp and Benjamin Millepied. I have long admired Peter’s vision and am thrilled to now be presenting the incredible artists of PNB. The company’s arrival comes at a particularly noteworthy time, as PNB celebrates its 50th anniversary and The Joyce Theater celebrates its 40th.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, PNB performs Ulysses Dove’s Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven (Odes to Love and Loss) and Crystal Pite’s Plot Point, alongside PNB Resident Choreographer and recently appointed Artistic Director of Charlotte Ballet, Alejandro Cerrudo’s Little mortal jump, and Twyla Tharp’s Waiting at the Station. The Joyce is pleased to host our annual gala here at Lincoln Center, accompanied by the much anticipated New York premiere of Waiting at the Station and George Balanchine’s Diamonds, the choreographer’s glittering tribute to his youth in St. Petersburg.

It is thrilling to present this acclaimed company at the David H. Koch Theater, where, since 2012, The Joyce has programmed distinguished companies such as Nederlands Dans Theater, Ballet Preljocaj, The National Ballet of Canada, The Royal Ballet, Twyla Tharp Dance, The Joffrey Ballet, and Miami City Ballet, and artist Sylvie Guillem.

During its 48-week season, The Joyce attracts dance lovers worldwide to its theater in Chelsea, where it is home to international, national, and New York–based companies. In the coming months, you will have the opportunity to see more dance artists expanding the ballet tradition, including Christopher Williams and The Sarasota Ballet. The summer season continues to celebrate The Joyce’s ongoing commitment to bringing international dance to New York audiences, showcased by the return of New Zealand’s Black Grace, and to commissioning works by renowned artists. The work takes a cinematic approach to stagecraft, introducing its viewers to a mysterious place where dancers have dreamlike encounters. Their contents unknown, dark objects hide and reveal these characters, and remain once the dancers disappear.

As a dance, it fuses the technicality of movement, the theatricality of the stage, and the dark humor inherent in relationships. As an experience, Cerrudo aims to transport his audience— to “make them forget what they did today, and what they will do tomorrow,” he says. From cubes that serve as frames and obstructions to diversely characterized couples to vastly contrasting music, Little mortal jump is layered with unexpected twists and turns. This work is a step in the evolution of Cerrudo’s choreographic style, of which he says, “I challenge myself to create more complex works and to do things that I haven’t done before.”

“Plot Point was instigated by the opportunity to work with a live orchestra. Faced with the task of choosing music, I gravitated to film scores: music that is built to support action. A film score makes space for dialogue and provides the moving image with emotional tone and tension, making it also excellent music for dance. I am a fan of Bernard Herrmann, so choosing the composer was relatively easy. I eventually settled on his hauntingly beautiful score for Hitchcock’s Psycho.”

“With cinematic music as my starting-off point, my thoughts turned to the structures of screenplay, and the techniques of story. For Plot Point, I wasn’t compelled to deliver a specific narrative. I was more intrigued by the subject of screenwriting itself, and by our insatiable need for story.”

Scenic and costume designs by Santo Loquasto set the scene in 1940’s New Orleans.

The story follows one man as he attempts to connect with his son and pass on his steps before he must surrender to the three gilded Fates that seek him out. The ensemble dances upstage for much of the work. They are a living frieze, providing background rhythm and dramatic tableau as two couples gambol, waltz, spar, and swing through a sampling of society’s many small conflicts. After the Father dances his goodbyes and recedes upstage with the three Fates, his Son leads the jazz funeral procession—a celebration of both life and death through music and dance. An epilogue follows, wherein the Father returns briefly to tidy a few loose ends and conduct the finale before boarding his last train.

About The Pacific Northwest Ballet Founded in 1972, Pacific Northwest Ballet is one of the largest and most highly regarded ballet companies in the United States. In July 2005, Peter Boal became artistic director, succeeding Kent Stowell and Francia Russell, artistic directors since 1977. The Company of nearly 50 dancers presents more than 100 performances each year of full-length and mixed repertory ballets at Marion Oliver McCaw Hall in Seattle and on tour. The Company has toured to Europe, Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Canada, and throughout the United States, with celebrated appearances at Jacob’s Pillow and in New York City and Washington DC. Consistently lauded as “the best ballet band in America” by The New York Times and other critics, the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra is an accomplished group of musicians, led by the skilled baton of Emil de Cou. PNB’s artistic leaders have always prioritized live music as an integral part of the ballet artform and consider collaboration with the Orchestra to be a key pillar of PNB’s success. After two years of pandemic-era chamber groups and virtual presentations, Seattle audiences reveled in the return of the Orchestra to live performances this season.

Founded in 1974, PNB School is recognized as one of the top ballet training institutions in the United States and offers a complete, professional curriculum to more than 1,000 students. With locations in Seattle and Bellevue, Washington, the School maintains a faculty of more than 20 instructors, each with extensive performing backgrounds. PNB School’s Professional Division offers advanced instruction for those students planning a professional dance career. PNB seeks to reflect the diversity of our community by providing access and opportunity to talented students. The School’s DanceChance program offers students in local partner schools the opportunity to study classical ballet on full scholarship.

PNB’s Community Education Programs reach students and teachers of all backgrounds and experience levels through in-school programming, visits to PNB studios, and specially-priced matinees. PNB also offers unique audience education opportunities for adults wishing to expand their theater experiences.

Peter Boal (Artistic Director, Pacific Northwest Ballet; Director, PNB School) was born in Bedford, New York, and received his training at the School of American Ballet while performing children’s roles with New York City Ballet. George Balanchine invited Peter to join the company as an apprentice in 1983, and he continued to dance for NYCB until his retirement in 2005, when he moved to Seattle. He also served as a faculty member at SAB. In addition to directing PNB School, Peter teaches the Professional Division and Company. He has staged works by George Balanchine, Ulysses Dove, and Jerome Robbins for PNB, PNB School, and other companies.

Emil de Cou (Music Director & Principal Conductor) debuted with the National Symphony Orchestra in 2000, after which he joined the orchestra as associate conductor.

He has remained a regular figure at the Kennedy Center since his first performances there in 1988. He was conductor of the American Ballet Theatre for eight seasons, made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2006, and appears regularly with many of the country’s

David H. Koch Theater leading orchestras. For his ongoing work with NASA, de Cou was awarded the agency’s Exceptional Public Achievement Medal, the first musician to be so honored. He makes his home in San Francisco and Seattle with his husband, conductor Leif Bjaland.

Christina Siemens (Principal Company Pianist & Piano Soloist) joined PNB in 2003, was promoted to Company Pianist in 2008 and Principal Company Pianist in 2018. Her extensive solo keyboard repertoire at PNB includes Variations Serieuses, Concerto DSCH, The Four Temperaments, among many others. Ms. Siemens also performs with Seattle Symphony Orchestra and PNB as a soprano soloist, and with Seattle’s studio recording industry. Ms. Siemens enjoys ongoing engagements at home and on tour with the Northwest Boychoir.

As chamber musician, she is frequently featured on the Auburn Symphony Orchestra Chamber Series, as well as the St. Andrew’s Chamber Series and Haller Lake Chamber Series.

Josh Archibald-Seiffer (Conductor, Company Pianist, & Piano Soloist) has conducted PNB performances of Swan Lake, Cinderella, and The Nutcracker as well as world-premieres by Emmanuel Witzthum and Chicago-based rock band OHMME. Archibald-Seiffer has also worked extensively in the Seattle musical theater community. Production highlights include West Side Story; Kiss Me, Kate; Ragtime (The 5th Avenue Theatre) and Matilda (Village Theatre). He holds an MM from the University of Washington and a BA from Stanford University, both in Music Composition.

About The Joyce Theater Foundation The Joyce Theater Foundation (“The Joyce,” Executive Director, Linda Shelton), a nonprofit organization, has proudly served the dance community for over four decades.

Under the direction of founders Cora Cahan and Eliot Feld, Ballet Tech Foundation acquired and The Joyce renovated the Elgin Theater in Chelsea. Opening as The Joyce Theater in 1982, it was named in honor of Joyce Mertz, beloved daughter of LuEsther T. Mertz. It was LuEsther’s clear, undaunted vision and abundant generosity that made it imaginable and ultimately possible to build the theater. Ownership was secured by The Joyce in 2015. The theater is one of the only theaters built by dancers for dance and has provided an intimate and elegant home for over 400 U.S.-based and international companies. The Joyce has also expanded its reach beyond its Chelsea home through off-site presentations at venues ranging in scope from Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, to Brooklyn’s Invisible Dog Art Center, and to outdoor programming in spaces such as Hudson River Park. To further support the creation of new work, The Joyce maintains longstanding commissioning and residency programs. Local students and teachers (K–12th grade) benefit from its school program, and family and adult audiences get closer to dance with access to artists. The Joyce’s annual season of about 48 weeks of dance now includes over 340 performances for audiences in excess of 150,000 patrons.
