Mustangs Into A New Season!

Unassumingly nestled in a corporate park in Northville is one of the top five law firms in the nation that represents veterans and their dependents in their claims against the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for service-connected disability benefits.

A veteran can become service-connected by VA for any disability that is related to an injury or event that occurred in service. Few attorneys are experienced in the difficult VA claims process. This is especially true now that the VA has implemented new procedures for handling the disability claims. A unique experience is presented to local residents to have this company in their backyard, assisting veterans on both a local and nationwide scale.

Once service connection is granted by VA, the veteran is then paid monthly compensation benefits based upon the degree of current disability. In some cases, these benefits can also be transferred to the veteran’s family members. Widows and widowers of deceased veterans may also be entitled to payments based upon a disability of their spouse, where a service-connected condition contributed to the death of the veteran or where the veteran was totally disabled because of a service-connected condition for a certain period of time prior to death.

A View From The ‘Ville

A Window into the Past L ike a lot of you, I am somewhat new to this town.

At the time I was hired as the editor of the local newspaper nearly 10 years ago, I could tell you where Northville was on a map. I had been through town, certainly, but I simply knew Northville as a place with some cool parks, rolling hills, an old downtown and a horse track.

Once I got to town and started meeting people, however, I realized pretty quickly how deep this town’s history runs.

People are passionate about the past here. And we should be.

From our humble beginnings as a frontier town, to our manufacturing past and now our strong schools and beautiful neighborhoods – Northville has drawn people here for generations. And it’s the people – all the wonderful, colorful characters and everyday folks – who have created such a nice community.

If I’ve learned anything in my 10 years here, it is you can’t

really know a place unless you know its past, at least to some degree. That’s why when I started this magazine, I was determined to make sure I highlighted the past as much as possible.

I encourage you to learn more about our past, especially if you are somewhat new to town like me. Visiting Mill Race Village is a great start. We also have some great organizations, including the Northville Historical Society, and historic commissions in both the city and township (yes, Northville Township also has some pretty cool history), which are keeping our collective history alive.

And please keep reading The ‘Ville. We’ll continue to provide a window into our past.

Roth is proven leader

Originally from Michigan, work had taken us all over the country. Twenty years ago, we came home to Michigan and chose to live in Northville, the last four in the historic district. We appreciate those who have served our community. For this reason, we are supporting the reelection of Ken Roth for mayor.

While many hope to serve “someday” Ken Roth has served the community for more than 20 years. His accomplishments include providing the leadership that led to the passing of the road bond; along with City Council, approving the preservation of green space; and significantly improving the management of Northville’s’ financial situation. His work includes the Board of Education, Parks and Recreation Commission, and the City Budget Committee. Ken Roth’s broad experience and collaborative leadership style are assets to Northville.

We may well be starting into one of the biggest changes and growth spurts ever in Northville, and I want the best and most experienced leadership we have available to lead us through. I choose Ken Roth as mayor.

I have lived in Northville since the early 1990s and served on various City government committees, including City Council during that period. I love this town and feel very fortunate that my wife Jacque and I are able to live here.

I have worked with Ken in committees and have seen his time commitment, hard work, tenacity and deep budget skills at work.

There will be some tough decisions on how to best allocate the tax revenue generated by the change in land use of the current Northville Downs land. We need experienced elected officials. I want Ken Roth as our Mayor. Do us a big favor and vote for Ken. Doug Bingham

Talking about capacity in a roundabout way…

I spent the first 30 years of my life in Germany, where roundabouts became increasingly popular in the 1990s, and remain so to this day.

Lowering noise and emission levels, caused by the start and stop traffic at intersections, were some of the key objectives for smoothing traffic flow.

The traffic challenge that the development at The Downs brings to Northville is, however, not a challenge of flow, it is a challenge of capacity.

All the discussion about improving the flow at the 7 Mile/Center Street intersection is distracting from the real problem. Imagine all the changes that would need to be made in and around the city if we really faced increasing the capacity for traffic through Northville.

We still have a community where the roads and the traffic do not cut the town in half, like in Plymouth. The moment we go from two-lane roads to broader streets we will slice the city into pieces, and the walkable feel of downtown will be gone.

Roundabout will ease congestion I’m voicing strong support for the planned roundabout at the intersection of Seven Mile and Sheldon roads. I reside at Six Mile and Sheldon, and believe a well-planned roundabout will dramatically improve traffic flow and significantly ease congestion. I was very pleased to hear of this plan and hope to see it accomplished.

First responders will be impacted Concerning the proposed roundabout, there’s a much worse problem than fender benders. It’s Impossible to look at merging traffic and pedestrian crossings at same time. Equally important, there are no exit provisions for first responders for high priority rescue routes going through or around traffic and considerations for traffic backups.

7 Mile/Northville Road needs work First off, I love your magazine.

Thank you for all the work you do.

While the roundabout is the biggest issue with the new development in downtown Northville, nobody has addressed the Northville Road/7 Mile corridor and especially the situation near Custard Time where traffic is going to increase exponentially with new development. The situation already is a mess, the road is crumbling near the tracks, and there’s always traffic backed up turning left and right onto both roads, and then you have a yield at the interchange of Northville Road back onto Seven Mile heading west.

This situation has the potential to become very dangerous with hundreds of new daily drivers. Although the interchange at Northville Road/7 Mile Road/Hines Drive is new, it too may become very dangerous with much more traffic.

Mustangs determined to put recent slump behind them hen you walk into the Northville’s weight room during a summer football lifting session, you can feel a sense of urgency as head coach Matt Ladach barks out directions and blows his whistle.

Everybody seems to be focused on the task at hand as the Mustangs try and reverse uncharacteristic back-to-back

3-6 seasons under Ladach, who has a sparkling record of 70-38 in his 11 years, including seven postseason MHSAA playoff appearances.

One of the players expected to do a lot of the heavy lifting this season is senior Demir Tagani, a 6-foot-1, 250-pound lineman who started at center last season.

“What it’s going to take to turn things around is just our attitude, our effort, and we’re just here to work hard,” Tagani said. “We have a little chip on our shoulder from losing all these games and we’re just ready to come back with some heat.”

Tagani wants to make the most of his senior football season. His long-range plans include continuing his football playing career in college, either at Michigan Tech or Valparaiso University, where he plans to study civil engineering.

Tagani has enjoyed a great offseason, which was highlighted by a record bench press of 355 pounds, according to Ladach.

“He’s definitely a guy that will be playing offensive and defensive line,” the Northville coach said.

As the Mustangs prepare for their 2019 season opener

at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29 at Westland John Glenn, the preparation has been ramped up.

“Ladach made it harder on us for sure because he wants to make sure to push us, so when it comes to game time, we’re ready,” Tigani said. “Our charisma, our team chemistry is just through the roof right now.

It’s better than last year . . . we’re just a family right now, so we’re ready to play for each other.”

Ladach admits the losing has taken somewhat of a toll, but remains optimistic heading into his 12th season.

“These last couple years . . . they’ve been a struggle,” he admitted. “They’ve worn on us and worn on our kids. I think they’re ready to come out of their shell. I really believe we’re going to do significantly better.”

During the early preseason camp, the quarterback job was a competition between seniors

Tyler Peterson and Tyler Vos, along with junior Nick Lauderback, the latter of whom saw varsity action at QB as a sophomore.

“Our quarterback has to be consistent,” Ladach said. “We also like him to have some playmaking ability.”

Although All-KLAA running back Enzo Rodriguez graduated, the Mustangs will have a balanced running attack and will feature three playmakers.

They will be led by senior Nicholas Gattoni, a three-sport standout who also wrestles and plays baseball, along with fellow senior Robert Husband, who can churn out the inside tough

yardage.

Meanwhile, speedy 5-foot11, 180-pound junior Cayden Saunders also shows promise after a year on the JV squad.

Saunders ran a 4.52 40-yard dash time at Ohio State’s camp and a 4.58 at Bowling Green’s camp.

Last year the Mustangs averaged only 15.2 points per game on the offensive side of the ball, so Ladach is going to tweak a few things heading into the 2019 season.

“Our approach to teaching and coaching remains the same,” he said. “Two years ago, we went to the triple option and we had the two worst years that

we’ve had in my tenure as the coach, so we’re going to go away from the triple. We’ll still have some of the same principles of our triple offense, but we’re going to be running inside and outside veer and mid-line primarily.

“We’re going to be going back to what we ran three- and four years ago with our counter, our counter read, power, power read and play-action off of those.

Things that we were more successful in and more familiar.

And our players embrace those concepts more as well.”

The Mustangs will stick with their usual defensive philosophy led by a crew of seniors including Timothy Garby and Tigani on the line, Adam Saghir and Nicholas

team chemistry, the Mustangs embarked on a two-day summer retreat in late July at the Proud Lake Recreation Area.

“It was fun, it was just relaxing, we did nothing,” Ladach said. “I just said, ‘Fellas, we’re going camping.’ It’s something we like to do every summer. We’ve gone to rope courses in the past. We’ve gone to a National Guard base. This time I just said, ‘Let’s just go camping, hang out and relax.

Cook some burgers, cook some hot dogs, bonfire . . . ‘ and I think the kids enjoyed it.”

The Mustangs, who went 2-5 last season in the KLAA West, will embark on their division schedule beginning at 7 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 6 in their home opener against perennial power

“Everybody in our (KLAA West) division could win our division to be quite honest,” Ladach said. “It will be interesting. I don’t think there is going to be anybody that is down and getting beat up this year.”

Meanwhile, Northville will try and reverse the trend of two straight losing seasons.

“We told the guys and people have asked: ‘Coach, are we going to be good?,” Ladach said. “And my answer is: ‘I don’t know.’

And I really believe we’ll be as good as our players want to be.

And as good as they’re willing to be. Really, everybody wants to be good, but whether they’re willing to do what is necessary to be good remains to be seen.”

Fighting the White Plague Maybury Sanatorium made Northville a global TB treatment center

T

his month marks the 50th anniversary of the closing of one of Northville’s most renowned institutions.

Maybury Sanatorium, a stateof-the-art treatment center for tuberculosis patients, closed in August 1969 after nearly 50 years of service. Its closure marked the end of an era in treating one of the nation’s deadliest diseases, known as the White Plague. Improved treatments and the advent of antibiotics would diminish TB, though the disease has not been eradicated. The sanatorium — now occupied by the 944acre Maybury State Park — is testament to its visionary and namesake William H. Maybury.

It was at the beginning of his 13-year tenure as deputy health commissioner (1918 until his death in 1931) that Maybury was put in charge of construction of a new tuberculosis sanatorium planned by the City of Detroit on an 850-acre site in Northville. Tuberculosis Sanatorium struggled to find bed space for an ever-growing patient population.

Once financing was approved and acreage acquired from eight Northville farms in the quadrant bordered by Seven and Eight Mile roads on the north and south and Napier and Beck on the east and west, construction of the facility began in earnest in 1919.

Acreage on the site included part of Howard and Helen Whipple’s farm. It was Howard Whipple and his team of horses that helped plow a single furrow marking the roads to be built at Maybury.

The Whipples would eventually join the sanatorium family when Maybury hired Howard to manage the farm grounds and property. Helen was hired to host visiting dignitaries, researchers and physicians who came to tour the sanatorium, cooking and serving meals to guests at the farmhouse that is now part of Maybury Farm, operated by

the Northville Community Foundation. The Whipples lived in the farmhouse for more than 20 years before moving back to their farm; Howard worked on the Maybury farm for 38 years before retiring.

William Maybury was a constant presence at the building site during the sanatorium’s construction.

His title was construction supervisor but that hardly describes the multiple hats he wore as engineer, architect, supply purchaser, operations manager and anything else that required his attention.

He also had a knack for economy taking advantage of the 1920 demolition of the original Hotel Ponchartrain in Detroit (located at Woodward and Cadillac Square) to purchase at auction the elaborate doors, casings, plumbing fixtures and hardware at bargain prices. The hotel had spared no expense when it was built in 1907 using only the finest materials. In addition, windows came from thousands

of discarded x-ray plates from Herman Kiefer, University of Michigan hospitals and other facilities. The plates were washed clean and the glass panes placed throughout the sanatorium’s main buildings.

In an interview prior to the sanatorium’s opening in 1921, Maybury stated “we have tried in every way to eliminate the bare effect that makes the majority of hospitals so bleak and dreary. We do not want the patients to regard this as an institution, but as a temporary home, and we have endeavored to make the surroundings as homelike as possible.” Originally called the Detroit Municipal Tuberculosis Sanatorium, and later Spring Hills Sanatorium, the name was permanently changed in 1927 in recognition of William Maybury.

SELF-CONTAINED COMMUNITY The Maybury site would eventually contain 45 buildings including the ambulant building with five wards (all with porches), a powerhouse, a children’s unit, doctors’ quarters, a nurses home, a school building, an annex, women’s dormitory, service buildings with four fully-equipped kitchens, a central heating unit, ice house, bakery, tinsmith’s shop, carpenter shop, water supply, laundry, pasteurization plant, auditorium (which also served as a chapel) and fire protection.

A portion of the milk used yearly came from the farm’s dairy herds. The sanatorium even had its own library branch, part of the Wayne County library system, and its own patients’ magazine, titled The Fluoroscope, with advertising

William H. Maybury did not live to see the White Plague’s decline. In the fall of 1931, he became ill, infected with tuberculosis, the disease for which the sanatorium was established.

For NPS, the work and results are big steps forward and their thanks goes back to the community for the support.

School construction projects on schedule The start of school is right around the corner.

When students return, they will notice a lot of changes at many Northville Public Schools.

The district has been busy implementing upgrades to the several buildings thanks to the bond passed by voters in 2017. Phase 2 work has been underway this summer at Amerman Elementary School, Hillside Middle School and Northville High School.

NPS said all projects are proceeding as planned.

Amerman looks forward to a new secured entry, an expanded media center with flexible collaborative spaces, updated classrooms and new heating and cooling throughout the building.

Northville High’s new fitness center and cafeteria addition will be completed and occupiable in October. NHS will also be equipped with a more secure front entrance with an added set of locked doors and updated security hardware. New turf on the soccer field at NHS will be ready for use in August.

Northville Schools officials said they are appreciative of the support from the community as the district improves learning environments in all of its buildings. It will be hosting open houses for each building upon completion.

“We are incredibly thankful for the support from our community for the 2017 bond as we create flexible learning environment upgrades, make improvements to the infrastructure of our buildings, and enhance safety and security across Northville Public Schools,” NPS Superintendent Mary Kay Gallagher said.

“Our community’s ongoing investment in our schools speaks volumes about its commitment to our children, and is a key factor in continuing to build on the excellence that exemplifies our schools and community.”

At Hillside, construction will continue throughout the year and work will be completed in 2020 with a new school building.

The far west side of the building will be closed for renovations during the 2019-2020 school year and fine arts classes will be temporary located in other classrooms in the building.

With the start of the year around the corner, the question for many is what will the first day of school look like?

District officials said Amerman will welcome students on the first day of school to a freshly renovated building while some minor construction may take place at the beginning of the school year to complete the renovation work.

High schoolers will enjoy the new facilities and additions in October once the project is complete, while Hillside students can expect school to operate as normal while construction continues with fine arts and music classes temporarily in new classrooms.

Open houses are being planned for Amerman and NHS, which will take place in the fall.

Work at Amerman Elementary will largely be complete by the start of school.

The Day the Sky Fell A jet crashed in a Northville neighborhood in summer of 1959

ay 8, 1959 was a beautiful sunny Friday afternoon in Northville. People were shopping uptown and Main Street Elementary School had just ended classes for the day. Children were walking home and being loaded onto school buses along Main Street.

Like most days, several children had stopped at Mr. and Mrs. Eugene King’s house on South Rogers Street to play in their backyard. The King family had cut a tree down the previous day in their back yard and Mr. King had asked his two sons to start digging out the tree stump when they got home from school. Eugene King was Northville’s newly appointed chief of police and he wanted to remove it when he got home that night.

At the same time, Major John L. Moutier of Belleville was preparing his approach to

Moutier, at the time a pilot for 21 years and serving with the 107th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron of Michigan’s Air National Guard, saw his flight bring him over western Wayne County on that afternoon while returning from a routine mission to photograph geography in southeast Michigan.

As he was preparing for his final approach back to the airport, he started to experience problems with his aircraft.

He described it as a “frozen stick” -- a problem that occurs when the hydraulic system fails or malfunctions. He reported that he was fighting the malfunctioning hydraulic system when he lost control of the jet and it started into a steep vertical climb at a high rate of

Meanwhile, the boys had just completed digging out the stump and were in the process of lifting it out of the hole when they saw the plane coming at them. The brothers dropped the stump and started to run from the hole. As the stump fell to the ground, it landed on the foot of their young sister Elizabeth King who had been playing in the hole with her doll. She cried out to her brothers for help and when David saw her, he ran back to help. As David got to his sister and freed her, the plane crashed spraying flaming jet fuel onto both children.

The scene of the crash became very chaotic and the air was filled with thick black smoke as frightened children were running away. David ran into the house with his clothes still on fire while Elizabeth lay in the back yard on fire.

Reverend John Taxis of the First Presbyterian Church was cutting the grass at his Main Street home when the jet crashed; he knew his children were playing in the King’s backyard. He ran to the crash site and up the driveway when he encountered Patty King first, whose pants were one fire. He stopped to pull her burning pants off and then seeing Elizabeth lying in the grass with her clothing on fire he ran to her. He removed his coat and wrapped it around her to smother the flames.

Another witness that was close to the crash site was Darwin Teshka, a school bus driver with 25 children on his bus from Main Street Elementary School. He stated

that he could not have been more than 300 yards away from the area of the crash and that he was very scared as the plane looked like it was heading right for him and his busload of children.

help. Fred Casterline who saw the plane go down was already heading to the area in his ambulance fearing the worst. Eugene King was stuck between performing his duties as Chief of Police and helping his children. He had to rely on emergency crews to help his

call for Northville’s Fire and Police departments. Many people from Northville who saw the plane flying over the city and either saw or heard the crash began to clog the streets.

Northville’s firefighters arrived on scene quickly and began to extinguish the flames while police officers were trying to secure access to the area for the public’s safety.

Mrs. King, seeing her injured children, placed an emergency telephone call to Casterline’s Ambulance Company for

family while trying to balance the needs of the community.

I recently spoke to Elizabeth King about the day’s events from 60 years ago and she shared with me how the day’s events are still so clear to her from how badly the pain was, to the ambulance ride that took her and her brother to Detroit’s Sinai Hospital. She remembers laying in the back of the ambulance hearing the siren blaring away.

Shortly after the crash occurred, military officials

were notified and began heading to Northville. The pilot, after landing safely with his parachute near Hines Drive and Cass Benton Park, was offered a ride back to his unit at Metropolitan airport in Romulus. It was reported by the Northville Record that the canopy of his jet plane landed about a quarter mile east of Novi Road near Eight Mile Road and was found in a field. The ejection seat came crashing to earth on Railroad Street when it landed on a parked car near Mergraf Oil Company, which was located east of the railroad tracks off Doheny Drive today.

Michigan State Police assisted the Northville Police Department with the investigation of the crash site.

Over the next few days, military officials worked to collect parts from around the neighborhood.

Heavy equipment pulled into the backyards to assist with the recovery of the larger sections of debris. Northville residents were drawn to the scene day and night and watched as a crane lifted the wreckage onto flatbed trailers and servicemen from the Air Force then began filling in the 10-foot deep crater that the jet plane made after slamming into the earth.

Surprisingly, with the exception of damaged shingles on roofs and a few broken windows, the damage was very light to area homes. Northville Fire Chief William McGee and his men worked tirelessly assessing the damage in the neighborhood.

The King children faired much worse as they would be in the hospital for months and had to undergo many surgeries that

included skin grafts for second and third degree burns. David was first to be released from the hospital and hailed a hero when he returned home by the community for saving his young sister.

Major Moutier would visit the children several times in the hospital and after both children were released, they were invited to lunch at the airport and to visit the Michigan Air National Guard Base. During the visit David was shown another Thunderflash jet and even sat in the cockpit while young Elizabeth did not want to go anywhere near the aircraft.

The King family would receive more than $110,000 restitution from the US

To get there, the Northville Township Board of Trustees has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the MCMBA. Township Clerk Marjorie Banner said the agreement is a “win-win” for the community.

“The board unanimously agreed that this is a win-win,” Banner said. “We get trails for our residents for little or no cost and the Motor City Mountain Bikers, including many Northville residents, get more trails to ride.”

With the agreement now in place, MCMBA spokesman Loren Konkus said they’re excited.

Banner said the east end is the right place to start because the west end still has some environmental clean-up

required, and she added the township feels, “we need to see how the partnership with the bikers works before agreeing to more bike trails on the west end, which is larger.”

So is part of the plan to connect to any existing trails and/or pathways?

“Absolutely,” Banner said.

“Connectivity is central to this whole concept.”

Konkus said the MCMBA helps develop and maintain almost 100 miles of mountain bike trails in the western Metro Detroit area. He said some of these are long destination trails in massive parks, such as the 16 miles of trail at Highland State Recreation Area, but he added they’re also finding that smaller neighborhood trails nestled in active communities are increasingly popular.

“People really value being able to leave their cars at home, and ride pathways that connect to neighborhood trails,” he said.

“And so we’ve been investing more on those types of trails such as LakeView and River View along Hines Drive, the new Settlers Park in Highland, and Rouge Park in Detroit.”

He said they believe Northville is a good fit for them.

“We think the Northville Seven Mile Park is a great opportunity to extend this idea,

So what’s next?

“There’s so much to do – designing signs, raising funds, creating schedules – but the next steps are to work with Northville Township staff to identify existing trails, key landmarks, trail connection points, and the basic route of the trail network,” Konkus said. “Reviewing topographical maps, hiking through the forest marking GPS coordinates, and flagging and refining potential trails will take some time, but then we’ll be ready to build.

n Nov. 5, voters in the city of Northville will be asked to make some tough decisions on who will help lead their city government.

Voters will decide who will be mayor for the next two years, as well as who will fill two city council seats – both four year terms.

In a previous edition, The ‘Ville discussed the two-man race for mayor between current mayor Ken Roth and Brian

The council race has longtime city councilwoman Nancy Darga not seeking another four years while incumbent Marilyn Price is. She’s going up against candidates Joe Corriveau and Barbara Moroski-Browne.

MARILYN PRICE In seeking re-election, Price said it’s her hope to continue the “great work” being done by the city.

“We’re in the middle of an exciting and challenging time in

the city,” she said. “We have the opportunities that come with growth and face the challenges that come with change. I believe that the composition of our leadership team is very important. I have experience and am dedicated to creating positive solutions to the decisions and issues that face Northville.”

She points to her time on council and what’s been accomplished.

“We have increased fiscal responsibility. Northville is in the top tier of Michigan cities in terms of addressing legacy costs. We have improved communication and transparency by overhauling the city’s online presence and videotaping council meetings and placing them on the webpage. We passed the road bond which will improve Northville’s streets.

She and her husband moved to Northville in 1993 and have two sons, both graduates of Northville Public Schools.

“I’ve really enjoyed my tenure on city council,” Price said. “We have dedicated people working for Northville. They’re a pleasure to work with and I’d like voter support to continue in my role as a council member.”

JOE CORRIVEAU Corriveau, who has a longtime law practice in Northville, said he believes his combination as resident, lawyer, husband, father and local business owner makes him uniquely qualified to lead this city into the future.

“As both a local business owner, and resident, I understand the balance between profit and quality of life,” Corriveau said. “While on city council, I pledge to keep Northville the very best place to live, work, and raise our families.”

He has been on the Northville District Library board since 2006. He also ran for city council in 2015, narrowly losing by around 80 votes. From a large Northville family, he and his wife Melissa, together with their two children, have lived in downtown Northville for more than 20 years while his family has maintained a business in the historic district since 2001.

He’s a graduate of Catholic Central, Wayne State University and Michigan State University College of Law. He points to his experience as a strength he can bring to the council.

“Virtually every day I represent the residents of Northville in counseling my clients, both businesses

and individuals, from very routine to very complex legal problems,” he said. “In each instance I carefully listen, research, and apply the law in order to find a sound solution. It is the application of those skills and experiences drawn from my diverse background that I will bring to city council.”

BARBARA MOROSKIBROWNE Moroski-Browne, trained as a public policy analyst and a former U.S. GAO evaluator, is a senior data analyst and public sector consultant for a forensic engineering consulting firm. She said she will listen, learn, do her homework, “walk the talk’” and be a strong, collaborative voice on city council.

She said she and her late husband, Daniel, moved to Northville in 1986 to raise their children and from the start the town felt like home; she has lived in the city’s Historic District for six years. Over many years, she has served in numerous volunteer and elected leadership positions supporting Northville Public Schools and local service organizations.

“Northville is a wonderful place to live, work, and visit,” she said. “Our leaders, over many years, deserve much

credit for this. I want to continue that legacy — preserve what’s great about Northville today while making the right decisions for tomorrow.”

She said the city needs a strong vision that promotes strategic residential and commercial development, supports local businesses and prioritizes infrastructure maintenance. She said she believes a walkable town center

is the city’s strongest asset, and it must encourage the right mix of businesses to retain the inherently social nature of shopping, dining and green space.

“Our community needs to be engaged and informed about what’s happening and offered more opportunities for their voices to be heard,” Moroski-Browne said. “The current wrong-sized Downs redevelopment plan is our-wake up call to stay informed and get involved. I will find common ground on tough issues, keep us focused on our shared goals, and make sure we are doing what’s best for the Northville we know and love.”

No matter how the vote turns out, the city council will be missing a familiar face and voice in Darga, who has been serving on the council for the past 12 years.

Darga, who served on the Recreation Committee then Commission for more than 20 years, has also served as the city council liaison to the Art House and previously Allen Terrace.

She said some of the most thoughtful people she has ever worked with served on these boards.

In looking back at her time, she said she also wants to thank Northville Township for being great partners during some trying times.

“I believe that is why Northville prospers,” she said.

She said she’s not seeking re-election, but is, “very excited about the new individuals that have decided to run. They bring great business experience and a caring attitude.”

She said the city of Northville is in good hands with the great talent in its new Police Chief and Public Works Director; with a Fire Chief and Downtown Development Authority

2nd Annual Color Run

Color My World, a student club at Northville High School, will be hosting the second annual 5K Color Run/Walk from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Sept.

22. The event begins and ends at Northville High School. It is open to the community with all proceeds going to teen suicide prevention and mental health awareness at NHS. According to organizers, the event raised more than $10,000 last year, which was used to fund eight free peer to peer mental health activities as well as suicide prevention training for the high school staff and administration. Goals this year include creating a mental health resource library, increasing outreach activities to twice monthly, creating a public service announcement (PSA) and pamphlet specific to teens and enhancing suicide prevention training including guest speakers.

His award-winning work, which is exhibited regionally and nationally, is enjoyed by an international Ritchie audience and is owned in a growing number of private, corporate, and commercial collections.

This year his recognition has expanded to the Big Apple. In March his work won a $1,000 cash Excellence Award in the 34th Chelsea International Fine Art Competition in New York City. In addition, he participated in the 2019 NYC Summer Invitational, held June 25 – Aug. 3. Nast recognized for volunteer work

Kevin Nast, owner of the Northvillebased NastGroup Financial, has been named a finalist for the 2019 Invest in Others Awards Gala.

Nearly 700 advisors and financial services executives attend this premier event each year to celebrate the individuals that actively give back to their communities. This year the event will be held Sept. 26 in Boston.

Nast was recognized for his volunteer efforts with the Life Remodeled project, Kevin Nast (right) with another Life Remodeled which removed blight volunteer. in the City of Detroit. He and his wife Jamie have taken an active role in the project. Over the past five years, they’ve volunteered hundreds of hours plastering, priming and painting walls, removing blight, serving in leadership roles, and helping raise significant financial donations. In addition, they are among some of Life Remodeled’s largest financial donors.

Kevin has also served as the project’s Director of Transportation, ensuring that more than 10,000 volunteers get to-and-from the worksite and registration areas as timely as possible. Thanks in part to his efforts, four square miles in Detroit were beautified and repaired, resulting in lower crime rates and increased positive views of the city.

The other two finalists for the award are Wayne F. Holly of Sage Rutty and Company, Inc., who has taken care of more than 54 foster children over the past 20 years, and Brock Moseley of Miracle Mile Advisors, who has worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles.

“The advisors we recognize demonstrate leadership and dedication as they make lasting impacts in communities across the country and around the world,” according to a Invest in Others Awards Gala press release.

CFCU grant helps preserve history Community Financial Credit Union recently awarded $1,000 to the Friends of Northville Township Historic Fund. The grant will be used to help the renovation of the historic Thayers Schoolhouse located at Napier and Six Mile roads.

The “Friends” are the non-profit fund raising arm for the Northville Township Historic District Commission, which is overseeing the renovation of the oneroom schoolhouse that was built in 1854. Once completed, this building will not only beautify a once-neglected corner of the community, but also provide a meeting place for community groups and a learning opportunity for local school children as they step into the past.

“Exterior work is nearing completion and we anticipate interior renovations to come into full swing shortly,” said Friends member Robin Schleh. “This grant will be a big help towards new windows, flooring or brick repair.”

The grant comes from Community Financial Credit Union’s “Summer of Sharing” program. They give away $60,000 in $1,000 increments every day for 60 days during the summer months.

“As a community credit union, investing in the communities in which we operate is one of our core missions,” said CFCU’s Natalie McLaughlin. “This donation is to recognize and thank those organizations that strive to keep our communities strong and help those in need.”CFCU presented the check to the Friends. New Upscale Italian Bistro Brings Veteran Chef Full Circle

A long career in the restaurant business has led John Gallagher back to square one — and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Gallagher, a chef and restaurateur known in the Northville area for his 20-year run at Little Italy, an award-winning favorite located in a charming Victorian-era house on Hutton Street, is back with a similar concept, this time at Nonna Maria’s American Italian Bistro in West Bloomfield, which opened in December.

Gallagher was running cafes in upscale office buildings last year when the closed Maria’s became available. “This kind of fell in my lap, really,” he said. He sold the

With Nonna Maria’s — Nonna is an affectionate Italian term for grandmother — he is continuing his family’s tradition of good food and hospitality as well as honoring Maria Valente’s legacy and the earlier restaurant that bore her name.

current lineup includes veal marsala, veal di mare (a veal and shrimp combination), seafood, New York strip steak, filet mignon, and a veal and lobster piccata with artichoke hearts, lemon, capers, butter and white wine.

There are pastas, two with chicken and three with seafood, plus salads, minestrone and appetizers like stuffed eggplant and calamari and shrimp with roasted peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, olive oil and garlic.

They will also be serving their famous Spiedini, an appetizer that was a favorite at Little Italy.

Gallagher, who cooks at Nonna Maria’s most nights, also offers small-plate specials (bruschetta, meatball sliders and fettuccine alfredo among them) and house wines for $5 a glass during social hour, 4-6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

The new place is the old place, too -- the same building where Gallagher started in his family’s restaurant business when he was about 10, washing dishes, doing prep work and, later, cooking and waiting tables. Then simply called Maria’s (and officially, for a time, Maria’s For Pizza), the place was named for his maternal grandmother, Maria Valente, and young John worked alongside her and grandfather Alfred.

“I just grew up in it and I was good at it,” Gallagher said. He had planned on becoming a lawyer, but grew to love restaurant work. “I like cooking Italian food. That’s my specialty.”

“I want to make it a place where people can come and have something different every day,” said Gallagher, who plans to change up the menu four times a year. In nine months, Nonna Maria’s has become both a neighborhood hangout and an area destination spot.

He also teamed up with Dan Mahan, the former general manager at Roma Café, who will serve as general manager. “He is a huge part of the business,” Gallagher said.

The decor also features murals by Northville artist Janisse Lahti Larsson. Nonna Maria’s seats 55 people and includes a small bar, and a planned expansion early next year will add another 25 seats.

Nonna Maria’s hosts a winemakers dinner, a ticketed event in which wines from a specific vineyard are paired with courses of food, every few months, and a beer dinner, with the suds provided by Old Nation Brewery in Williamston, Michigan, is planned for this fall.

orthville lifer” Jeff Moon and his wife Josselyn took their copy of The ‘Ville with them in May when they traveled to Peru. According to Jeff, during their eight day trip, they visited Cuzco, Lima, and the ruins at Machu Picchu (pictured) built by the Inca in the mid-1400s.

“The pictures of the archaeological site don’t do it justice; it has to be seen in person to fully appreciate how spectacular it is,” Jeff said. “We promised ourselves we would do this for our 25th wedding anniversary. This year, we will be married 40 years -- so we are right on track!”

Jeff is a lifelong resident of Northville and Josselyn is a professor at Schoolcraft College.

The ‘Ville also traveled to the Women’s World Cup. The Jones family took the magazine along to France in June.

They attended two of the U.S. games – on June 16 in Paris against Chile, and the second June 20 in Le Havre against Sweden. In addition, they were able to visit Normandy where they did a D-Day tour.

“The soccer games were fantastic with an enthusiastic crowd and many Americans present,” Pete said.

Northville’s Carol Doyle traveled to Seattle back in May to visit her sister -- and made sure to snap a photo with her copy of The ‘Ville. Here she is pictured atop the famous Space Needle.

“It offers such a beautiful view of Seattle,” she said.

ow, we blinked and it’s August. Another summer is winding down. If you have not been to Custard Time, a community staple, do it now.

It’s always amazing to me to round the corner on Seven Mile Road and see the line up of folks waiting, and then to see how quickly the line moves. I love frozen custard – and Custard Time Likewise, if you haven’t been to a concert in Town Square, the Belanger Farmers Market or eaten outside at one of our lovely downtown restaurants – what are you waiting for?

Convertible tops have been down more than up recently.

Meanwhile, teachers are getting ready for the start of the school year. High school marching bands have started rehearsing. Track teams are running through town in training. College freshmen are heading off to uncharted territories and if you have your first kindergartener here’s a little advice – school supplies are already on sale.

Mackenzie Belanger is packing her bags and heading south. She is preparing for her role as Patty in the musical “Grease” on board Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas Freedom-class cruise ship beginning in September. Mackenzie attended the American Musical and

Northville Boy Scout Troop 755 had the opportunity to honor and celebrate veterans of WWII on Wednesday, July 17 at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. The scouts escorted veterans as they boarded an American Airlines flight as part of Soaring Valor, through the Gary Sinise Foundation. The veterans visited the museum built in their honor in New Orleans.

The Foundation also sponsored a historian to record their stories. The program has expanded to include students, so they may learn directly from America’s Greatest Generation.

This event is just one outreach program originating from the actor’s personal relationships with our nation’s service community.

Sinise explains, “As citizens, we benefit from the freedom and security they fight to protect. Supporting these heroes is a responsibility we all must share.”

Northville resident and Imagine business owner Jack Kelly held a contest to make over the yard of a deserving homeowner, as a surprise! The winner was a lovely woman, Barbara Adams who lives on Allen Drive. There were more than 50 volunteers who participated, including the Kelly clan and a special guest volunteer, Miss Michigan USA Alyse Madej. Ten members of the recipient’s family also joined the effort.

Barbara was deeply moved

by everyone’s generosity. When all was said and done Jack Kelly smiled and said, “Just imagine if we all helped our neighbors.”

Jack’s folks Michele and John Kelly have spent a lifetime serving the community. Michele was on hand for the make-over.

“We are very proud to see our children also giving back to our community.”

This reminds me of a contest I once had the honor of judging.

It was sponsored by ColgatePalmolive, and it was part of a beautification effort in downtown Detroit. Residents were so proud of their hard work. I will always remember the smiles as they showed off “no weeds in the cracks of the sidewalk.” I have spent a lifetime trying to do the same at my house. Those who know me know I lack gardening skills, so I am in awe of this wonderful project by the team at Jack’s Imagine Landscaping.

I am happy that weeding season is soon over, but slightly reluctant to say good-bye to summer. However I can’t help but smile when I recall a song from my youth, "See You In September."
