Greetings, Members!

I would like to give you a warm welcome to SPE ITS SC 2020/2021 on behalf of the Boards of Committees. I am Kevin, President of SPE 20/21, and I am proud to announce that our e-magazine has been published. My utmost appreciation goes to all the boards engaged in the making of this magazine.

Along with SPE ITS 20/21 boards, we envision this organization to be recognized for the predominance of our works as an organization

in terms of impactful development, gradual learning of global energy cultivation, and professional competence by working with integration, commitment, and maintaining relations within members, stakeholder, and society. To achieve such visions, we come up with a set of missions. First to enhance gradual learning of Oil and Gas knowledge, developing an efficient working environment, elevating boards and members competence, providing delegates with assistance, expanding relations between stakeholders, and conducting social responsibilities to the community.

All those ambitious missions will be achieved through our programs which are all available to you. Unfortunately, aware of the current critical situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is a challenge to digitize everything. But we are making it a top priority and doing our best to integrate all of our work programs online so that everybody can enjoy them safe and sound at home, including this magazine.

I hope this edition of PETROPOLIS magazine has a beneficial effect on all those who want to broaden their understanding of the oil and gas industry.

Welcome, readers!

Last year was a tough one, wasn’t it?

Even now, many are still in disbelief of 2020; a string of wildfires, airplane crashes in Iran and Pakistan, the death of basketball legend Kobe Bryant, social dispute over the killing of George Floyd, the deadly explosion in Beirut, and various natural disasters – all under the cloud of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But we’ve persevered and passed the unexpected 2020 and now it’s the beginning of 2021.

The Journalism Team of the Society of Petroleum Engineers proudly greets you

with another of our official online magazine, PETROPOLIS Volume 2. It’s been quite a long time since Volume 1 was released due to a long preparation to deliver our best efforts.

We have collected excellent headlines, interviewees, and insights on not just the oil and gas industry, but also SPE ITS SC event highlights, life hacks, career prospect, and self-development topics. We wish for our readers’ minds to be sparked with new information and hearts to be warmed with relatable and meaningful content.

It’s not too late to wish you a happy new year, right?

I think last year was a very tough and tiring year for all of us. All sectors of life were severely affected and life gets a little gruesome. This year, I hope we can all start over, knitting one by one the things that were not resolved in the last year.

At the beginning of this year, we proudly brought a new face from our magazine, “PETROPOLIS.” With the grand theme-REVIVAL, we would like to invite you to fight again.

During this pandemic, there are many failures that we may encounter. But I want to make sure you are not alone, let’s take a breath and then get up. It might be a little difficult, but I’m sure we can all get through it.

Jeffrey Gitomer once said that, “Obstacles can’t stop you. Trouble can’t stop you. Other people can’t stop you. Only you can stop you.”

EventSpotlight An organization won’t last without having continuous improvement.

The one method to do by measuring its performance against other related organizations or known as benchmarking. As one of the biggest student chapters in Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember Surabaya, SPE ITS SC always tends to develop its organization and continues to compete not only with related organizations in Indonesia but also globally. Carrying a mission to increase relations among SPE SC in the ASEAN region, SPE ITS SC 2020/2021 held a benchmarking with SPE UTP SC at the closing of the end of 2020. This event, which took place on Sunday, December 27, 2020, is one of the work programs supervised by the external affairs division that aims to increase insight and establish relationships with SPE SC from various universities in the ASEAN region. According to Ezra, this activity needs to be done because we can get a variety of new knowledge that is good for the management of SPE ITS SC now and in the future.

Besides that, this moment can also be used as an evaluation for improving each division and person in our organization. Let’s take a peek at the excitement behind the event from Ezra’s point of view as a PIC.

In sharing the session and game’s part, each of BoC is invited into several rooms that contain staff from the same department. It is intended that discussions and games run fun and each participant can gain new insights and add connections to open up opportunities in the future. For Ezra, even though there were some obstacles during the preparation, this event was quite successful and went well.

THE URGENCY OF ENERGY TRANSITION PLANS FOR OIL AND GAS COMPANIES

As a matter of fact that the United States has been the leading country in the oil and gas industry ever since the start of the 20th century, it is quite the mystery to have experts denounce their prediction of the previous decade again and again. In 1914, it was predicted that oil would run out in 10 years, then in 1939 and 1950, it was renounced to run out in 13 years. Continuing its pattern in 1973, it will run out by 1990, and alas recently by the last decade in 2002 oil will run out by 2030 and other fossil fuels in 2050.

So, are we really running out of oil?

It turns out that the reality of oil running out is way more complicated than just mere statistics.

Technology advancement also plays an important part in denying what experts have said during their times. During the early stages of finding American gold, it was the pioneer in extracting oil hence they were only able to extract oil from easily accessible oil reservoirs known as “elephant” oil fields.

That would have been the basis of what experts predicted to run out of. But, with the advancement in the extraction technology, they can now access from harsh conditions and still obtain the oil they were looking for. Time to time technology leaps a giant hole, oil resources that are recently found adds a new light to the prediction of oil running out. There is actually another factor that adds on to the rapid decade to decade change, which is the increasing price of oil.

that there is space for increase in production fees which would make it possible for industries to venture the most unconventional reservoirs to still obtain profit. For example, the deepwater drilling in offshore areas and also oil sands.

According to Stanford University, they show the future energy reserves in billions of oil equivalents as a function of year. While we obviously use up fossil fuels without taking notice of what future reserves look like, we should take note of the endpoints. These endpoints are dangerously close: Since our society is so dependent on fossil fuels, it therefore is ex tremely important for us to know when these fuels will run out as follows:

Oil will end by 2052 – 30 years time Gas will end by 2060 – 40 years time Coal will last till 2090 – 70 years time However, according to British Petroleum, earth has 53 years of oil reserves left at the current rate of consumption. According to the 2019 Annual Energy Outlook, the global GDP growth is expected to average at 3,4% between 2017 and 2040 and the demand will grow by onethird throughout 2040. These are enhanced because of the countries that are currently developing like China and India who both have the highest rate of growth. Hence, talks regarding renewable energy have started to grow.

Amidst this prediction by 2019, the global economy and also the oil and gas industries have been affected by the current COVID-19 pandemic. In the Upstream region, certain fields have reached the negative margin of price because of the low demand and creating discounts to avoid stoppage of production but squeezing it to minimum flow. This must be done because stopping production totally will be technically difficult and it could jeopardize the extraction in the near future. Whereas exploration and development are drastically cut which would slow down the production in the long run if suddenly the demand for oil rebounds back to normal. Continuing

on the downstream of the oil and gas industry, all service companies from pipeline gas, infrastructures, and floating storage ships are feeling the pain and making drastic adjustments to avoid liquidation of their companies.

Just one year ago the main contradiction of energy transitions would be political and environmental issues that build up pressure politically amongst the communities and the government, but this hiatus because of the pandemic can serve as a double edged sword.

Temporarily healing environmentally can either continue its morale support of transition or embarking through the overflow of oil supply.

What does the expert say about energy transition plans?

From the perspective of a geoscientist, is it true that oil and gas will deplete soon?

In my opinion, oil and gas will not deplete any time soon. Instead, it is the falling economy that will end the triumph of the industry. Oil (and gas) cannot easily run out, there will always be an “extra” or amount that is left out. Even the wells that are not used anymore still have oil in them because oil cannot be extracted 100%.

We can certainly come back to those wells to extract more with advanced technology, but we often forget that when we are talking about geophysics and geology exploration, we are actually talking about a business that revolves around money and time. Another factor that contributes to the end of the oil and gas industry is regulation. For example, in other countries such as France and New Zealand, activities of oil and gas exploration are banned due to environmental issues. As we all know, there is a global agreement to minimize carbon emission and one of the ways is to stop exploration activities.

How do these environmental issues lead to transition to renewable energy?

As of right now, Indonesia’s oil and gas industry is in great need of investors. What’s happening is that these investors have averted their attention to something else, namely renewable energy. For example Shell and BP who have committed to transform their business and invest in geothermal, wind, etcetera. Thus, we have no other choice but to follow this energy transition rather than not getting any investors and buyers.

What should oil and gas industry players consider in order to follow the energy transition plans?

In order to follow with the transition, companies should change their focus. Take Shell as an example, as I have worked at Shell for over 20 years, it is true that Shell started as an oil and gas company. But now they have committed to focus on being an electricity company. Shell has invested and will continue to do so into renewable energy by hosting competitions such as the Shell Eco Marathon in support of hydrogen cars. Well, I must say that if companies want to survive, they have to transform their businesses.

What is the role of the Geoscience field in energy transition?

Well, as of right now, we are only getting the impact. When I was in Shell, Shell had a block in New Zealand. When we were planning its exploration and other processes, all of a sudden, New Zealand started implementing its regulations to stop oil and gas exploration activities. Also, it is very hard to find a partner to collaborate with. But there is also an opportunity in the midst of all these. We realize that big key players in the industry have lessened their activities, which then paves the way for medium and small businesses, such as Petronas itself. With all that said, I still feel like there is a lot of potential in Geoscience.

Personally, I am currently studying Geothermal. things commonly based on England.

How is the prospect of renewable energy in Indonesia?

The future of renewable energy in Indonesia is actually quite bright. But the problem is, not many can see that. Indonesians still focus their path on oil and gas, when actually, we are being left behind by other countries such as New Zealand. This happens because there is a lack of promotion and guidance for renewable energy in Indonesia, especially for the students. From what I know, the majority of university students studying Geoscience are targeting to work in the oil and gas industry, which is hand-in-hand with the lecturers’ aim to prepare their students to work in that industry as well. Meanwhile, the field of Geothermal is not socialized well because the market now is not that much yet on top of the government’s lack of knowledge on how to develop geothermal energy. We are still too invested in the oil and gas industry. In actuality, the oil and gas industry in Indonesia rarely develops new concepts and theories, we do things commonly based on England.

For A Sustainable Future Why does Flaring Occurs?

In oil and gas production operations, the flaring system is essential. Flaring occurs due to the disposal issue caused by the associated gas produced with oil during the production stage.

Associated gas comes from separators after gas and water have been separated from crude oil. The associated gas is generally considered a waste by-product, and there is typically no market for it. Due to economic constraints and limited infrastructure, the associated gas was often burned (flared) in the oil fields. This kind of practice is commonly called routine flaring.

Flaring also could reduce the risk of fire and explosion. Processing and storage equipment for oil and gas is often run at high pressures and temperatures. When abnormal conditions occur, the control and safety systems must release gas into the flare to prevent hazards to employees or the public. Flaring also may be required in shut-down situations to avoid a catastrophic situation occurring. Flaring for safety reasons is also known as non-routine flaring.

Environmental Issues Flaring leads to climate change by releasing carbon dioxide and other contaminants, which affects the atmosphere. Flaring is also blamed as the cause of the environmental problems such as acid rain and ozone depletion. Around 140 billion cubic meters of associated gas is flared annually by thousands of oil production sites worldwide—causing more than 300 million tons of CO2 to be emitted to the atmosphere. If this amount of associated gas were not wasted by flaring but is used as an energy source, it could meet the electricity demands of the entire African population (750bn kWh).

The environmental risk of flaring could be an economic burden to a nation. The implication of flaring could be taken by the case of Nigeria—the seventh-largest flaring country. Based on PwC analysis, to reduce gas flaring emission, 7,5 million hectares of trees need to be replanted in Nigeria. The number of trees could absorb 638 million cubic tons of carbon from gas flaring and other carbon emissions sources. It will need $94 million to rejuvenate the environment impacted by gas flaring.

Global Concerns and Commitment Since it has an impact on the environment, flaring is becoming a global concern. Social pressure pushes oil companies to commit to greenhouse gas reduction to achieve the Paris Agreement’s goal. Various energy companies, governments, and institutions began endorsing the Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 initiative launched by the World Bank and the United Nations in 2015. The initiative is concerned with routine flaring and not with non-routine flaring for safety purposes, which can still be reduced. Oil and gas operators are asked to utilize or conserve the associated gas from its new field development and eliminate the routine flaring from its existing field no later than 2030.

The government that endorses the initiatives would be benefited from sustainable oil and gas production that would boost the nation’s prosperity. In order to achieve this, the government needs to provide a conducive environment for upstream investment and the development for flaring utilization.

The oil and gas company that commits to the zero flaring initiative will benefit from gaining global recognition as a responsible oil company concerned with environmental impact. The recognition will earn public trust in oil and gas companies that would impact the business continuity.

What Do You Know So Far About Crude Oil? Petroleum, commonly known as crude oil is one of many fossil fuels that formed from organisms millions of years ago. Besides its geographical name, there are many ways to classify crude oil. In this part, we will show you the 3 basic categories of crude oil, let’s start!

1. Black to the light

2. Sweet vs. Sour

3. Heavy vs. Light

Variations of the crude oil can be shown by their colors. Crude oil is usually black or dark brown, but can also be yellowish, reddish, tan, or even greenish. The colors would be indicated about the distinct chemical compositions of different supplies of crude oil. For example, petroleum that has few metals or sulfur, for instance, tends to be lighter.

Crude oil is composed of some molecules, one of which is sulfur. In crude oil, sulfur is considered an “impurity” so it can corrode metal in the refining process and contribute to air pollution. Based on that, petroleum could be called “sour” which has more than 0,5% sulfur, or “sweet” which has less than 0,5% sulfur.

Sweet oil is usually much more valuable than sour because it does not require as much refining and is less harmful to the environment.

API (The American Petroleum Institute) is a trade association that rules about standards for a variety of oil and gas-related products in the oil and gas industries.

The one which is about a measure of the density of petroleum liquid compared to water named API gravity.

If an API gravity is greater than 10, petroleum is called “light” and if it’s less than 10 it is called “heavy.” Light oils are preferred because they have a higher yield of hydrocarbons. Heavier oils have greater concentrations of metals and sulfur and require more refining.

Even now, it is hard to believe that 2020 just slipped through our fingers in dismay, regret or ambition should i say? A string of natural disasters, airplane crashes, death of legends, social dispute, deadly explosion, protests, stock market crash, award-winning Parasite, Covid-19 vaccine rollout, Joe Biden wins, and various disasters or achievements. And through the chaos emerges the light of 2021 which serves as a hope for humanity and civilization.

Well, enough with the major turbulence of international issues, but how have we personally dealt with ourselves during all this turmoil. Occupations and social roles have shifted to adapt with the currency crisis but have we just nodded and said yes or there is still some internal unrest to deal with. First of all, it’s completely normal. On the brighter side, we have brought someone close to us also with the capability to overcome.

We hereby invite the Vice President of SPE ITS, Ms. Bella Clarensia, one of the great faces of SPE. Well, of course, it wasn’t an easy journey getting here. A fun fact was that she got rejected from Petrolida during her first year and is now the Vice President of SPE, the organization that hosted Petrolida. Her key virtue that pushed her to do her best was a loving father’s word that said,

All-in-all, she brought herself from a simple interviewee that got rejected towards being the board of director of an organization. It all lies upon these few secrets that she has shared with us on this opportunity.

1. Personal Branding - “If we know that we are capable, it’s a shame if others didn’t get to know.” those are the impactful words that I quote from my Interview with Ms. Bella. It has a deep meaning and it was Ms. Bella’s main problem during her first years in ITS. It was when she decided to step out of her comfort zone and show others her skills, then only she got the opportunity to thrive.

2. Personal Space - Personal space may seem like the boundary that you set in a relationship, but here is to find a place where you feel the most comfortable to thoroughly open your thoughts. Ms. Bella herself mostly resides with her brother when things get tough, else judgmental will get the best of her. Judgmental is really an ivy thorn that can stumble our principles of judgment. At that personal space, she can feel calm, be grateful, and push her to move forward.

3. Passion - This is the most tricky part. Ms. Bella explores quite a few environments, from the student association, oceano event, PMK staff, BEM internship staff. She also said, “Don’t fear new elements, because anything you obtain will help you thrive.”

It was only then that she realized that SPE is where she feels the passion and thrives becoming a blooming flower.

In reality, a journey in college isn’t as simple as doing your tests during the final examination where there are an expected learning outcome and specific boundaries of the learning progress. The real college journey has unlimited possibilities and learning outcomes, it all comes back to what you really desire. Alas simple tips from our beloved vice president, adapt and expand your network.

Soft Skill and Tips Revival: 4 Steps to Break From a Mental Block Hello fellas! Have you ever felt afraid to do something, including your hobbies? or you feel doubt about your potential? If yes, maybe you’ve got a mental block!

What is a mental block?

Based on the book “Quantum Life Transformation” by Dr. Adi W. Gunawan, ST, M.Pd, CHWA, CCH, the mental block is a mind program that hinders the achievement of goals. This makes you feel so afraid and worry about something that could not necessarily and sometimes can be “a giant wall” to stop your productivity and creativity.

How could we resolve this?

Dr. Adi explained that mental block strength is determined by emotional intensity. So, one way to get rid of mental blocks is to do the Hypno Emotional Freedom Therapy (Hypno-EFT) Technique.

This technique focuses on

pressing several points on the body to allow energy to flow properly throughout the body, so that the negative emotions attached to the traumatic event become positive energy.

Steps to do the Hypno-EFT by yourself 1. Think about the problem, then write down any negative emotions that arise 2. Making a scale of 0-10 as a measure of emotional intensity, a scale of 0 means very low emotions and a scale of 10 means emotions that are very irritating to oneself.

3. Intend to release all negative emotions by reading positive suggestions three times by pressing the sore spot on your chest.

4. Press the area under your little finger then repeat the suggestions that have been made many times. Do this seven times while saying positive suggestions over and over again.

Pandemic has certainly provided unprecedented disruption for the energy sector on fossil fuel sources. Behavioral shifts due to COVID-19 have made people work remotely, resulting in reduced mobility, impacting fossil fuel consumption decline. The S&P Global has reported that the pandemic has lowered the long-term world oil demand by 2.5 million BOPD. The energy transition is also supported through the massive development and investment of renewables technology, where the expense becomes cheaper. Based on the Mckinsey report, by 2035, 50% of global power generation will come from renewable sources.

The Fossil Fuel Peak is Near

Based on McKinsey’s Global Energy Perspective report, the fossil fuel demand will peak in 2027 as renewable power rapidly grows. The forecasted peak for the oil demand is 2029, while the natural gas demand is 2037. However, the role of fossil fuel in the energy mix will remain until 2050.

Crude-to-chemical is the Future

Although the fossil fuel peak demand is near, fossil fuel will continue to play a significant role in the petrochemical feedstock. Petrochemical demand is driven by population growth— forecasted to surpass 9 billion people by 2040.

It is also supported by increasing urbanization and improving the standard of living with economic growth and development. The growth of durable goods (propylene derivatives) and packaging (ethylene derivatives) post-pandemic will contribute to the petrochemical’s demand.

Purnomo Team, Champion of International Case Study Competition

Prevailing in the midst of the raging COVID-19 pandemic, delegates of the Society of Petroleum Engineers ITS Student Chapter added another prodigious achievement to the collection. This time, it was the Purnomo Team with members Anargya Agrapradanandika Anindya (Industrial Engineering 2017), Kevin Fausta Rajendratama (Engineering Physics 2017), Ferrel Hamonangan (Chemical Engineering 2017), and Geniara Abi Ramaditio (Ocean Engineering 2018), who became champions at an international competition, the Industry Delve Business Case Study Competition. With participants coming from different regions of the world, the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies SPE Student Chapter hosted this competition successfully in collaboration with APTA Consulting Pvt. Ltd.

Introducing, the Purnomo Team It turns out that this Industry Delve Case Study Competition was not the first competition these four men entered together. Kevin revealed that they had once participated in another international competition that was held by SPE UI SC in collaboration with UPES SPE SC, which also resulted in a winning title in 2019. Through that experience, Argi, one of the members of the Purnomo Team, actually expanded his network and connected with someone from UPES SPE SC. And that same person then personally invited Argi to join in on their case study competition in collaboration with APTA Consulting. When asked about the whereabouts of the team name they have adopted, Purnomo, Kevin mentioned that it was actually in honor of a figure in their lives. It turns out that in their first case study competition, the team was greatly helped by Mr. Purnomo, an expert in the oil and gas industry. Kevin added that the honourable mention was always willing to be consulted and shared his insights on the case, which most definitely contributed to the team’s win.

Overview of a Mud Engineers Drilling Mud Purpose

Drilling mud also referred to as drilling fluid, is a circulating fluid used to perform any or all of the different functions required in drilling operations. The drilling mud’s purpose is to cool and lubricate the drill bit, clean the hole bottom, carry rock cuttings to the surface, control formation pressures, and improve the drill string’s function tools in the hole.

Drilling mud is a viscous mixture of clay (usually bentonite) and additives mixture of natural and synthetic chemical compounds.

Commonly, drilling muds are divided into oil-based drilling muds (OBs) and water-based drilling muds (WBs). The type of fluid base used depends on the drilling and formation needs requirement.

Task and Responsibilities

Mud engineers—so-called drilling fluid engineers or mud men—are responsible for managing the drilling fluid used in the process of drilling oil and gas wells. The job involves formulating and testing the drilling fluid at oil and gas rigs. The mud engineer must maintain mud weight, properties, and chemistry within recommended limits. They conduct standardized testing during the drilling process and use various methods to change the mud’s viscosity, including adjusting the mud’s temperature, pH balance, and chemical components.

Drilling Fluids Engineers are typically hired by oil services companies that provide the operators with contracted services and can be employed onshore or offshore. The mud engineer will work closely with geologists, drilling engineers, and completion teams on new or existing oil and gas fields. When formulating the drilling fluids, mud engineers regularly use predetermined geological information obtained by geologists and drilling engineers. The Drilling Fluid Engineer plays a vital role in the drilling and production process by ensuring its operations are safe.
