Ananta Ruri, or Ms. An, was graduated from Industrial Engineering Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember in 2005. Started off as a financial analyst and tender specialist in Jakarta and Balikpapan in 2006, she decided to swerve her career path by successfully becoming a Drilling & Measurement Field Engineer in Qatar, 2007. Been in charge in numerous countries such as Abu Dhabi, Hungary, Germany, and Oman, she’s now a Recruiting Manager for Indonesia and Australasia. On 12 September 2019, it was such an honour for SPE ITS SC to conduct a company visit to Schlumberger CIB. We were welcomed very heartily by several employees, including Ms. An. It was such a pleasure too, that we had an opportunity to exclusively interview her. While she was a field engineer in Oman for about 6 years, each segment had different roles, she said. To simplify, she used to prepare tools for data logging, pick up the DHA, run the tools until it hit the total depth, and continuously monitor the data because it was transmitted in real-time data, so if

there was something wrong with the data, it could affect the petrophysicists and geologists in taking decisions. “The most tiring part was picking up the DHA because it could take almost an entire day,” she added. “When I wasn’t at the field, I was at the office to do some requirements for promotion or do a callibration.” In general, she spent a month at an offshore field, went back to town for a week, and then departed again for the field for the next one month. From a field engineer to someone who works in Human Resources Department, she did it through promotion. We all know that Schlumberger is a multinational company, and it is very challenging to work there. As stated by

portfolio to be able to compete in the world of work. First thing, predominantly for ITS students, don’t be a part of Himpunan or BEM only because they’re just an internal organizations and you can’t associate with external parties. “For the first to third semester, I think it’s OK, but later than that, I suggest you to join an international organization such as SPE or extra-curricular like MUN. It will hone your organization skills, the way in dealing with people, so your adaptability will improve and you’ll exchange ideas smoothly. Or signing for an international competition, that surely can help you to be a soft-landing before truly jump Ms. An, in some examples, Indonesians are very smart and laborious, but rarely speak up their thoughts and opinions. “If you never speak, people will not recognize what’s inside your brain and they start to think that you only keep the knowledge for yourself,” she remarked. It is necessary to be brave to speak up especially when work with other people. No means no, and yes means yes. “When you have to complain for something they shouldn’t do, just complain.” So, the most important challenge is to be fearless to raise your voice. For college students, you have to develop yourself by improving your

into the real world. “You can apply for internship on semester break. It can literally give you a clue of what you have learned while at college,” Ms. An noted. “Also don’t forget to try applying your knowledge for the society. Smart people are everywhere, but there are only a handful of smart people who want to change the society with their knowledge.” Last thing, Ms. An said that we, especially women, must be strong. In workforce, you have to be mentally tough because there will be a lot of unexpected bitter experience. When you know you’re not wrong, just go ahead. Rise and shine.

Petroleum Production WELL AND RESERVOIR PRESSURES Tubing pressure is measured on the fluid in the tubing, whereas casing pressure is measured on the fluid in the tubing-casing annulus. The pressure gauge at the top of a Christmas tree measures tubing pressure. Bottomhole pressure is measured at the bottom of the well. The pressure is measured either as flowing, with the well producing, or shut-in or static, after the well has been shut-in and stabilized for a period of time such as 24 hours (Figure 1). Downdraw is the difference between shut-in and flowing pressure in a well. The original pressure in a reservoir before any production has occurred is called virgin, initial, or original

pressure. During production, reservoir pressure decreases. A pressure bomb, an instrument that measures bottomhole pressure, can be run into the well on a wireline. A common pressure gauge consists of a pressure sensor, recorder, and a c1ock-driven mechanism for the recorder.

WELL TESTING Tests are run on a well to determine the optimum production rate. The tests are run by the well operator, a specialized well tester, or a service company. After the well has been completed, a potential test can be run. The potentia! test determines the maximum gas and oil

Figure 1. Flowing and Shut-in Pressure In A Well

that the well can produce in a 24-hour period. It uses the separator and tank battery on the site to hold the produced fluids. A productivity test is run to determine the effect of different production rates on the reservoir. It is made with portable well test equipment

(Figure 2) that measures the fluid pressure at the bottom of the well when it is shut-in and then during several different stabilized rates of production. The measurements are used to calculate the absolute open flow rate and the maximum production rate that the well can produce without damaging the reservoir. Oil well test data typically includes oil production, water production, gas rate, gas-oil ratio and flowing tubing pressure. Gas well test data typically includes gas rate, condensate production, water production, flowing tubing pressure and condensate-gas ratio. Pressure transient testing on a well involves measuring pressures and flow rates. One type, a drawdown test measures the shut-in bottomhole pressure and then the pressure change as the well is put on production and the pressure drops to a stable, flowing pressure. A buildup test measures the flowing bottomhole pressure and then the pressure change as the well is

Figure 2. Productivity Test Equipment

shut-in and the pressure rises to a stable, shut-in pressure. A multirate test, such as a four-point test, measures the flowing bottomhole pressure at different, stabilized flow rates. Deliverability is the ability of the reservoir at a given flowing bottomhole pressure to move fluids into the well. Maximum potential flow or absolute open flow (AOF) is the maximum flow rate into a well when the bortomhole pressure is zero. It is a theoretical flow rate that is calculated from a llluhivariate test. The production index (PI) of a well is the downhole pressure drawdown in psi divided by the production in bblsl d. Wells on land usually have a PI of greater than 0.1 psi/bbl/day whereas offshore wells have a PI greater than 0.5. Inflow performance relationship

(IPR) is similar to PI because it plots drawdown against production but is more accurate in that it also accounts for reservoir drive, increasing gas-oil ratios, and relative permeability changes with production.

CASED-HOLE LOGS After a reservoir in a well has been depleted, a decision must be made to either plug and abandon or recomplete the well. To recomplete, an oil or gas reservoir must be identified behind the casing. Only the natural gamma ray and neutron porosity logs can be run in a cased-hole. A pulsed neutron log is a type of neutron log that emits pulses of neutrons into the formation and measures returning gamma rays. It can distinguish gas and oil from water in the

reservoir and is used ro find gas and oil located behind the casing.

PRODUCTION LOGS Production logs are run in producing wells to evaluate a problem. They are run either on a wireline through the tubing or on a tubing string. There are several types of production logs. Tracer logs are used to detect fluid movement in a well. A radioactive cracer is injected into the well at a specific location, and its movement is tracked by recording gamma rays. A noise log uses a microphone to detect and amplify any sounds in a well. The log can locate where fluids are flowing into the well, and the frequency of the sound can be used to distinguish between liquid and gas. A temperature log measures the temperature of fluid filling a well. Before the temperature log is run, the well is shut in for a period of time to allow the temperatures to come to equilibrium.

Figure 3. Open and Cased Hole Completion

DECLINE CURVES A decline curve is a plot of oil or gas production rate with time made for a single

well or an entire field. Production rare will decline with time as the reservoir pressure decreases. The initial production (IF) of a well is the first 24 hours of production and is usually the highest. As the production rate declines, the well eventually becomes a stripper well that is barely profitable. The economic limit of a well is when production costs equal net production revenue. Most wells are designed with a 15- to 20-year life.

WELL STIMULATION Several well stimulation methods can be used to increase the well production rate. These include acidizing and hydraulic fracturing.

Acidizing The well can be acidized or given an acid job by pumping acid down into the well to dissolve limestone, dolomite, or any calcite cement between sediment grains. HCI (regular acid), HCI mixed with HF (mud acid) and HF (hydrofluoric acid) are acids that are commonly used. HCI is effective on limestones and dolomites and HP is used for sandstones. For formations with high temperatures, acetic and formic acids

are used. Hydraulic Fracturing During a hydraulic fracturing, a service company injects large volumes of frac fluids under high pressure into the well to fracture the reservoir rock . A common fracture fluid is a gel formed by water and polymers, long, organic molecules that form a thick liquid when mixed with water. It is done in three steps. First, a pad of fracture fluid is injected into the well by several, large, pumping units mounted on trucks to initiate fracturing the reservoir. Next, a slurry of frac fluid and propping agents are pumped down the well to extend the fractures and fill them with propping agents. Propping agents or proppants are small spheres that hold open the fractures afrer pumping has stopped. The well is then back flushed in the third stage to remove the fracture fluid.

Iceland is home to many volcanoes, hot springs, and geysers; 87% of the country’s homes are heated using geothermal energy.

Geothermal Energy

For every 100 metres you go below ground, the temperature increases by 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Once you reach the Earth’s core (6.437 metres deep), temperatures can reach more than 5000 degrees Celcius. The oldest known spa fed from a hot spring is believed to be a stone pool found on Lisan Mountain in China, built in the 3rd century BC. In some parts of Iceland, hot water runs from geothermal power plants under pavements and roads to help melt ice.

Baker Hughes’s Intelligent Injector Control System A smarter way to reduce uncertainties and risks in coiled tubing operations As the utilization of coiled tubing (CT) for intervention operations increases, so do the risks. High-pressure and deeper wells can push operational limits, often resulting in costly tubing damage and equipment failures. The latest advancement in CT operations, the Intelligent Injector Control (IIC) system provides industry-leading CT injector control through the integration of real-time modeling using actual dynamic well conditions. Powered by the CIRCA™ REAL-TIME (RT) modeling software, the IIC system drastically reduces the likelihood of a significant failure during CT operations. The CIRCA RT software uses live operational data to dynamically update safe operating guidelines, situational advice and system warnings. The software provides real-time updates on CT

string limits with respect to taper design, pressures, and completion profiles. The display also provides a constant visual feed showing coiled tubing position and reel rotation. The IIC system receives these critical parameters from the CIRCA RT software and makes automated adjustments to avoid tubing damage and failures, all while maintaining the system within a safe operating envelope. The IIC system can also operate in an alternative mode where BHA loads are also considered. In this capacity, force critical tools such as logging spinners and shear release tools are protected in the same method as the CT. Safety measures are also considered and built into the IIC system. If the system fails based on a loss of data input or electronic power, the hydraulic system will default to maximum trac-

Q : How was your team’s preparation for the competition? A : The competition was on November and we prepared for the competition for about 3 months. It started with an online selection and we did a lot of research for the competition. We had been planning on participated on PETROFEST . So we did a lot of research related to the theme. The theme was about “unconventional gas to prevent national gas balance deficit”. And then we submitted the abstract, and then submitted the full paper. Q : Why did you choose to join the case study competition instead of the others? A : Actually, we were looking for a study case competition since the beginning. Because we have already participated on a business case competition and were looking for a similar competition. We chose PETROFEST because it is one of the most prestigious competition, held by SPE Java in collaboration with SPE Student Chapter. Q : Was there any problem during the preparation or competition? A : We don’t think we had any problem during the preparation or competition, but we did have challenges. First thing is because we were from the

MEET The Barden Bellas Team 1st runner up Case Study Competition PETROFEST 2019 same academic background which is ocean engineering, we needed to learn from the beginning about unconventional gas and did research as much as possible. And the second thing is because we already are on our third year in college, we surely needed to have a great time management. Q : Any tips to win? A : first tips, you need to find a team. Find people that you think they can work well with you and the other members. It will be great if you know the person or from different backgrounds of academic. Second, find more about the competition you want to participate. Third, you need to understand the theme and topics required for the com-

petition. Fourth, the competition will definitely ask you the solution of the problem they gave to you and you must purpose ideas or solutions as realistic as possible and make sure that they could be implemented well. Last thing, on a competition, it’s not all about knowledge. You need to have other skills like public speaking or something like that. It’s about how well you can deliver your ideas to other people and make sure that they understand your ideas. For all of you who haven’t try joining a competition, I suggest you to at least try. It’s better to try than never. It’s better lose than regretting the fact that you’ve never tried. By Adisya Salsabila

PETROSTUDY: Wireline Evaluation Wireline logging is the process of using electric instrument to continuously measure the properties of a formation, in order to make decisions about drilling and production operations. Or in other words, wireline logging is the measurement of downhole formation attributes using special tools or equipment lowered

into the borehole. In wireline logging, the sonde is gradually pulled out of the hole, and records the real-time properties of the formation rocks and their fluids along the way. According to Mr. Setya Perwira Putra’s presentation as a Wireline Logging Maintenance Manager of Schlumberger, there are 5 basic reasons we must do the logging.

1. Identify hydrocarbons 2. Determine hydrocarbon types and volume 3. Determine type of fluids that will flow and at what rate 4. Confirm well integrity 5. Optimize well construction and reservoir production

Unfortunately, personal financial management is not something you could learn at school like biology and English. This leaves many young adults clueless about how to control what’s inside their wallet and bank account. As college students, we’re in the verge of the way to live independently as grown-ups in general. So, there is no better time than now to start manage your money. I’ve applied them and since then, I feel my life’s improved. First thing first, you should learn how to control yourself. The rise of online shopping today makes you can buy things effortlessly without having to leave your bed. The presence of mobile and internet banking might also support this problem. Don’t forget about online food delivery, too. It is something undeniable that we’re living in the digital era, but you should maintain your desire. Try to separate between your needs and cravings. When something catches your attention on either online of offline platform, wait at

least three days before deciding to buy it. If you still want to buy after those three days, you probably need it. If the sparks are not there anymore, don’t buy it because most likely it’s just your temporary yearning. Second, you must know where your money goes. Take a note of your monthly income and expenses. Save 20-30% of your monthly income regularly. You can withdraw it from your account and hide the cash in a somewhat hidden place in your room or transfer it to a separated saving account. This prevents you from using the whole monthly money. And this doesn’t mean you can’t spend your money for lifestyle and other happiness. Create a budget for every category. Allocate wisely how many percent of money you need for each category. This excludes the 20-30% for monthly savings. And don’t forget to always stick to this budget. Slowly, but surely. Don’t cheat. Third, for college students, try to find a side job to generate more in-

come. There are various of activities that will not distract you from your study priorities, but still will give you some additional bucks. This can be working for a coffee shop as a part-timer, selling products online, offering some creative services which match your skills (for example if you’re an ace at website designing, try to open for request), and many others. Depending to your creativity and ability to see a positive opportunity, getting money by your own doesn’t require you to graduate first. Fourth, start planning your financial future. As a person in the early 20s and late teenager, start to see yourself as a pre-adult. Learn from your parents. Try to learn global and national economic situations in general. You have money, it is an asset, and you must know what would be going on with it. Doesn’t matter if you’re a very scientific person, financial is crucial. Even building a family needs a thoughtful financial planning. And the biggest enemy of money is inflation. The Rp10.000 you had when you were in elementary school doesn’t mean anything today. If you only think about today’s money, all is not gonna work. Learn how to invest. Starting from the tiniest scope, for example, buy a limited-edition famous lipstick or shoes, but not for yourself (if you want, you can buy 2). Sell it again when the original brand has ran out of

that limited-edition stock, and you can offer it for a higher price than buying price. If you know that the brand is potential and many people love them, someone will buy it even for a higher price, and bingo, you get some profit! But besides that, investing is not always about visible ‘things’. There are many types of investment, and I suggest you to learn at least some of them. Trust me, it would be very useful for your future. I know you’ll feel so old when talk about investment, but that’s what an adult does, and college life is where the gate to adulthood is technically located. Investing is essential. Fifth, design your financial goals. This is exceptionally important, especially if you already have your own income besides your parents monthly funding. If you still don’t have your own income, you can set a goal for your savings. Try to set your goals a little above average, but don’t get it too idealistic. You will be not motivated, but otherwise you’ll lose the appetite if you see yourself are still out of the way to the goals. After the first goal is achieved, you can increase the target of your second goal, and so on. It is much more effective than putting your goals up too high at once. Remember, you don’t need any fancy degrees to manage your finances because it is a basic life skill. Last, don’t forget to guard your health.
