After failing to reach a consensus last week, OPEC and its allies have again compromised on whether to keep production cuts at current levels, thus delaying gains scheduled for January.

OPEC, the 23-nation coalition led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, had put the options on the table, but no oven-ready deal due to several opposing camps. Several producers decided to stick to the initial agreement; reducing production during the first quarter and then increasing it gradually over the following months.

However, Abu Dhabi’s broad desire to increase its regional production quotas has sparked new tensions in these discussions. In addition, the provision

of compensation limits serves as a requirement for certain countries, such as Saudi Arabia, which seems highly unfair because it is not implemented for other underdeveloped countries, such as Iraq and Nigeria. This resurgence in infections sparked a new wave of lockdowns and dealt a new blow to fuel consumption with a sharply polarized picture between recovery in Asia and stagnation in Europe in 2021. So if consensus cannot be reached, the existing agreement allows members to add 1,9 million barrels per day to world markets, potentially thwarting the recent rebound in crude prices.

Advantageous Deployment of NonMetallic Composites in Downhole Applications A study by Badeghaish (SPE), NouiMehidi (SPE), and Salazar (Saudi Aramco) on the role and utilization of non-metallic composite materials in upstream oil and gas identified the complications that occur due to the usage of CS (carbon steel) in most applications. Some of the issues are as follows: corrosion, scale, and friction. In response to this, the deployment of non-metallic composite materials, which are notable for their lightweight, high-strength, as well as superior fatigue and corrosion resistance characteristics, was proposed.

Briefly, composite materials are made by combining two or more materials to create new materials with properties unique from those of the original materials. These nonmetallic (NM) composite materials are highly recommended to be utilized; especially in facing the inability of well-intervention tools of steel coiled tubing to reach target depth due to pitting corrosion and high friction, frequent failures of conventional metallic impeller pumps due to the highly corrosive environment, and many more cases. However, significant challenges remain. The path of actualizing deployment of NM composites involves developing roadmaps to accelerate mass deployment, support localization, and encourage investment in research studies.

Uncontrolled release of oil or gas f rom a well Natural gas is often promoted as the transition fuel towards renewable energy. But if methane is released into the atmosphere, it is approximately 25 times more potent than CO2, thus contributing to global warming. The oil and gas industry has played a role in methane leakage or so-called fugitive gas emissions. Methane may be released from nonpoint sources such as flanges, valves, sampling connections that are not properly sealed (equipment leaks and open-ended lines). The oil and gas industry must continue to take steps in addressing fugitive gas emissions. To mitigate the methane emission, oil and gas companies may improve their leak detection and repair system (LDAR) and install vapor-recovery units (VRU). It is also recommended for oil and gas companies to catch up with the latest technology such as double mechanical seals on pumps, dry gas seals on compressors, and carbon packing ring sets on valve stems.

Ardian Nengkoda Ardian Nengkoda is a well-known figure in the oil and gas industry, with more than 20 years of experience. Currently, he works as group leader for offshore facilities development at Saudi Aramco. He is a member of JPT Editorial Committee and the SPE International Energy Information Committee.

Ardian finished his undergraduate study in gas and petrochemical engineering at the University of Indonesia. He started his career as a petroleum engineer at Core Laboratories. Before joining Saudi Aramco in 2012, he worked as an expert in several oil companies including Chevron, Shell, Schlumberger, and PDO Oman. Ardian has led several mega projects in the petroleum industry. He has been awarded the 2015 Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Regional Projects, Facilities and Construction.

In 2016, his name was mentioned in the Indonesian media as a candidate for Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).

Was the Offshore Platform Really Built in The Middle of The Sea? You may be familiar with offshore platforms, which are rigs that operate on water (usually at sea), but aren’t you confused about how to build massive construction in the middle of the sea?

Get rid of that thought immediately! Offshore platforms are made on land, perhaps near the coast and even from various continents.

Fabrication results in the form of the structure will then be taken by boat with high buoyancy, whereas in some cases, four helicopters were used simultaneously to the installation site in the middle of the sea. After arriving, the structure is assembled according to the offshore type (usually following the depth of the sea at the location), such as fixed platforms, compliant towers, until spars platforms.
