Celebration of Life Community gathers to remember crash victims BY CHANING GREEN NEWS WRITER

A crowd made up of friends, family and community members estimated between 3 and 4,000 gathered in Tad Smith Coliseum Saturday morning to celebrate the lives lost in the plane crash that shook the Oxford community to its core a week ago. That tragic crash claimed the lives of six prominent citizens who not only provided great business services to those among us, but also offered tremendous leadership and generosity. The University of Mississippi’s former Dean of Students Sparky Reardon organized the joint memorial for Drs. Jason and Lea Farese, Dr. Michael and Kim Perry and Dr. Austin and Angie Poole. Representatives from the three churches the families attended stood atop a stage that was placed in the middle of the coliseum floor. Family, friends and close colleagues were seated in rows in front of the stage while other mourners filled the stadium seating. One section in particular stood out with a vibrant splash of orange as members of the Yalobusha Giants youth baseball team stood in uniform to pay respects to their late coach Jason Farese.

The UM String Quartet played Spring from Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons after Pastor J.D. Shaw of Grace Bible Church began the event with an opening prayer. Shaw prayed that God would comfort the families and friends left behind in the wake of this tragedy and that, as time progresses, the happy memories the community shares of the three couples lost might offset a fraction of the crushing grief everyone affected is feeling. Dr. Brant Kairit followed Shaw by delivering a remembrance through sniffles and chuckles over fond memories he held of the three families. Kairit runs his dental practice out of Senatobia and held both personal and professional connections to the six individuals being honored at the service. He said that one word in particular comes to mind when he thinks of all three couples: passionate. He described them as passionate about their friends, family and careers. Kairit’s connection to the Poole family goes back to dental school where he first met Austin. He later became acquainted with Angie at a crawfish boil. The speaker said that Dr. Poole had perfected the art of boiling crawfish as well as the celebration surround-

ing it. This was met with several nods and tearful smiles from those seated before the stage. Jason Farese and Kairit were teammates in college when the pair played baseball at Vanderbilt. The two also attend dental school together, where Kairit lived with Michael Perry, being roommates for two full years before Perry moved out and married Kim. He said that he considered himself very blessed to have held friendships with all of them. “The media has been constant in saying that we have lost four passionate dentists this past week,” intoned Kairit, speaking into a microphone as he stood at a podium bearing the Ole Miss emblem. “We did; we lost four exceptional dentists, but we also lost a caring nurse practitioner and we lost a skilled business woman. But they were all so much more than their professions. They were loving sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles. They were trustable, fun-loving friends, donors and supporters of their community. We all know this is important, and it’s really important that their kids hear this: of all the many titles TURN TO MEMORIAL PAGE 6
