Cowboy Maloney’s Electric City

He wasn’t really a cowboy, but the late James “Cowboy” Maloney could certainly be considered an entrepreneurial wrangler. He began his career in show business on radio’s Original Amateur Hour, owned a gas station, did construction work and finally bought a Jackson lumber yard in 1952. But when the boom of the television industry sounded in the mid-1950s, Maloney’s lumber yard transformed into one of the nation’s most recognized television and electronics dealerships. Maloney knew the business would be held to a higher standard as a Mississippi-based company, so he stood firm behind every product sold.

In 1973, Cowboy sold the business to eldest son Con, who quickly opened additional Cowboy Maloney’s across Mississippi and later changed the name to Cowboy Maloney’s Electric City. On June 17, 1994, the national media gathered in Jackson to watch Con and his two owner-brothers Eddie and Johnny become the first retailers ever to sell the DirecTV satellite TV system.

The company also sold the first Sirius Satellite Radio and DishNet Satellite Internet systems in the world. Today, Cowboy Maloney’s Electric City boasts annual sales of over $50 million while employing nearly 300 associates in Mississippi and Tennessee.

A member of the historic Double-A Southern League, the Mississippi Braves offer affordable family baseball entertainment for fans of all ages. Serving 23 counties of southeast Mississippi, Southern Company member Mississippi Power is recognized throughout the utility industry for excellence in storm restoration and recovery efforts. Mississippi Power ranked first in the 2013 Southeastern Electric Exchange Safety Performance reports and was awarded the Edison Electric Institute’s Emergency Assistance award.

The company was established in 1924 when it took over the assets of the Gulfport and Mississippi Coast Traction Company.

Today, Mississippi Power serves over 186,000 customers with electricity, including six Rural Electrification Administration-financed electric cooperatives. The company also operates generating facilities in Harrison, Jackson, Lauderdale and Greene counties. It is building the first commercial scale generation plant to run on Mississippi-mined lignite in Kemper County.
