2014 Businesswoman of the Year Pat Thomasson
T
Thomasson Company CEO Pat Thomasson is the Mississippi Business Journal’s 2014 Businesswoman of the Year. The announcement was made during a ceremony earlier this year at the Hilton of Jackson. Becoming the leader of a company her parents built, however, was rather humbling for Thomasson. The Thomasson Company provides pressure treated utility poles of varying lengths and specifications for use by utility companies of all types. Depending on specific climate, Thomasson provides varying degrees of treatment designed to delay the decaying process and ensure pole longevity. As CEO of the Thomasson Company in Neshoba County, she’s increased the wood products company’s sales by more than 50 percent to more than $60 million without any acquisitions. An active member of the Women’s Business Enterprise Council South, Thomasson is a strong advocate for other women in business and passionate about issues surrounding the business community. In 2010, she was elected president of the Mississippi Lumber Manufacturers Association. Thomasson was the first female to achieve this position. A breast cancer survivor, Thomasson is also a graduate of the University of Mississippi and is founder and director of the Neshoba County Rebel Club and serves as secretary of the Rotary Club of Philadelphia.

As a public relations practitioner, Kristie Aylett provides PR counsel to a diverse clientele through Ocean Springs-based The Kard Agency. The Oklahoma native is a past president of both the Public Relations Association of Mississippi and Southern Public Relations Federation. In 2009, Aylett was recognized by each organization for their Professional Achievement Award. Her primary areas of expertise are strategic communications planning and implementation, media relations and writing. Recognized as one of the first PR professionals in Mississippi to utilize Twitter, Aylett become a Public Relations Society of America Fellow in 2013. The Texas Christian University graduate is currently a member of the University of California-Irvine faculty as an online adjunct instructor. In her leisure time, Aylett enjoys beginning her day by walking her dog Nastasha, and reading, boating and home improvement projects.

In this day of the 24-hour news cycle, Rachel Beech takes pride in mobile news gathering. A reporter and multimedia journalist for Hattiesburg television station WDAM, the Long Island, New York, native is adept at covering the news by any means necessary, including her smart phone. At WDAM, she shoots, edits, produces and reports her own stories, mostly investigative and political pieces. Beech was honored by the Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters for the 2013 Best Investigative Reporting award. A former press intern for Sen. Roger Wicker, the University of Southern Mississippi graduate also was on the front lines covering the controversial Hattiesburg mayoral election last year. Active in her community, Beech serves on the Hattiesburg DREAM board of directors and as a Breast Cancer Awareness volunteer. In her spare time, Beech enjoys playing piano, working out and listening to music.

Julie Polk Breazeale has long been aware of her career destiny. After all, the Prentiss native grew up in her family’s business, learning all aspects of the meat products industry from her father. Today, Breazeale is the chief executive officer for Polk’s Meat Products, where she carries out the strategy and vision put in place to ensure long-term sustainability. Overseeing 115 employees and a $6 million budget, Breazeale believes small businesses like Polk’s are the lifeblood of the Mississippi economy. Active in her community, the mother of three children is a member of the Junior Auxiliary of Hattiesburg, University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Board of Directors and the Oak Grove Primary PTO. Married to husband Eddy, Breazeale and her family reside in the Oak Grove community and attend Venture Church. Self-described as “spunky”, Breazeale enjoys family outings and watching her sons play baseball.

HILARY BURROUGHS Sanderson Farms, Inc.

Hilary Burroughs is the Manager of Marketing Services for Sanderson Farms. Over the past 14 years, the Tupelo native has held positions in export sales, corporate poultry buying, national sales representative and corporate sales manager. In addition to her current duties, Burroughs manages the state’s only professional golf event, the Sanderson Farms Championship. Prior to joining Sanderson, the University of Mississippi graduate was a substitute elementary school teacher in Laurel. The mother of one son, Burroughs says the joys of motherhood far outweigh any of her professional accomplishments. Involved civically, Burroughs is a board member for several organizations, including the United Way of the Pine Belt, the Laurel Housing Authority and Mississippi Main Street Association. A lover of the outdoors, Burroughs enjoys playing tennis, cycling, running and entertaining friends.

For Linda Bynum, helping others has become a way of life. The executive director for the City of Ridgeland Chamber of Commerce, Bynum is involved in fundraising for several non-profits, including Hospice Ministries Chapel, American Cancer Society, Adam’s Playground and Special Olympics Mississippi. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Bynum has served in her current capacity with the City of Ridgeland since 1996. One of her most cherished accomplishments was leading a fundraising drive for the Ridgeland Police Department to purchase bullet-proof vests and other equipment. A graduate of the Mississippi University for Women, Bynum is an active member of the Madison County Creative Economic Council, Madison County Business League and Jackson Professional Women’s Association. An avid reader and traveler, Bynum enjoys spending time with family, friends and her Maltese dog, Sunny.

A self-professed Air Force brat, Karen de Kock grew up all over the country before settling in the Jackson area. A Fort Walton Beach, Florida, native, de Kock attended Mississippi State University, earning a degree in Broadcast Journalism. Formerly a news anchor with both WCBI-TV and Jackson’s WAPT-TV, she decided to “turn off the microphone� and pursue her other passion, interior design. The first member of her immediate family to attend college, she currently serves as a board member of the Jackson Public School District Board of Trustees. Dr. Mary S. Graham, was named the 12th President of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in 2011. The more than 100-year-old, multi-campus institution serves more than 30,000 residents annually in its four-county district with a $117 million operating budget and more than 1,000 full- and part-time employees. A native of Mississippi, Dr. Graham earned her Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM); her Master’s and Bachelor’s Degrees are from USM as well. As an MGCCC graduate and alumna, she embraces the philosophy of the community college and the rich tradition of excellence in education. During Graham’s tenure as president of MGCCC, the college has been recognized as a “Great College to Work For” in 2012 and 2014. The college has also been named as a “Top 100 Associate Degree Producer” by Community College Week and has been one of 150 community colleges nationwide invited to apply for the prestigious Aspen Prize. Graham currently serves on the American Association of Community Colleges’ Board (AACC) and is the chair of the AACC Governance Committee. She also serves on the board of directors for the Gulf Coast Business Council, Vice President of COMBASE and the Mississippi Community College Foundation. She was named the 2012 Stone County Educator of the year.

Before she reached her 30th birthday, Stephanie McCrary had achieved the title of Executive Director for Southern Bone & Joint Specialists. Today, McCrary maintains direct responsibility for managing the clinic’s 15 physicians, five extenders and four physical therapists. Under the University of Southern Mississippi graduate’s leadership, Southern Bone & Joint has expanded its services to include rehabilitation, and partnered with Forrest General Hospital to build the state’s first orthopaedic specialty facility. Active in several professional organizations, McCrary is a member of the American Association of Orthopaedic Executives and Healthcare Administrators Association. When she’s not at the ballpark attending one of her children’s athletic events, McCrary enjoys shopping.

Today, the Jacksonville, Florida, native is flying high as Director of the Center for Career Education at Millsaps College. She is responsible for the administration of the Center, which provides a full-range of services that optimize students’ internship, employment and graduate opportunities to enhance their career success. Prior to joining Millsaps, Nations served as Manager of Career Counseling and Development at the University of Southern Mississippi. Today, Northington serves the MEC as Vice President for Programs and Administration. The Jackson native’s main responsibility is facilitating Leadership Mississippi, the nation’s second-oldest leadership program, and overseeing MEC’s three annual meetings held across the state. A graduate of Mississippi College, Northington enjoys giving back to the community through volunteer work with Special Olympics and the American Cancer Society. Sally O’Callaghan is a voracious reader. Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or blogs, the Tylertown native will read it — even the back of the shampoo bottle, she admits. The Associate Director for Contracts Administration for the University of Mississippi Medical Center, O’Callaghan formerly practiced law in Texas before moving back to Mississippi. She considers her most significant professional accomplishment as instituting the development of a mixed use center on the UMMC campus. After completing undergraduate work at Millsaps College, O’Callaghan received her law degree from Southern Methodist University. Active with the Jackson Symphony League, O’Callaghan serves the organization as President-Elect. When she’s not reading, O’Callaghan enjoys the outdoors.

Stephanie Patton turns a blind eye to the naysayers who preach that the newspaper industry is dead. Not in the small Mississippi Delta town of Leland, where Patton owns The Leland Progress and doubles as the paper’s publisher and editor. Prior to purchasing the Progress, Patton enjoyed a career in marketing for over 20 years in the national magazine publishing field. An active member on the Mississippi Press Association board of directors, the West Monroe, Louisiana, native also serves as board president for the Leland Chamber of Commerce and Secretary for the Leland Presbyterian Women. Since moving to Mississippi, Patton has been accorded several honors, including the 2013 Special Service Award of Excellence by Mississippi Main Street and Washington County Volunteer of the Year award.

Most engineers have a once-in-a-lifetime project that consumes their lives. For Cindy Rich, the Highway 82 mega-bridge over the Mississippi River in Greenville was hers. The Las Vegas, Nevada, native spent nearly 15 years on the project, which was completed in 2010. Today, Rich is the Engineer Manager for Jackson-based NeelSchaffer and credits her even temperament and work ethic for helping her make the transition from design engineer to department head. Her 12-person team assists on structure projects for Neel-Schaffer offices in eight states. Rich’s proudest accomplishment was rearing three children who combined hold seven graduate degrees. An active member of the Highland Colony Baptist Church, Rich loves to cook and travel to exotic locales with her husband.

Amory native Pat Robertson has the responsibility of leading the nation’s 66th largest pension system. Named the Public Employees’ Retirement System Executive Director in November 2005, Robertson oversees benefit plans to more than 162,000 active members. As PERS fifth executive director, she is responsible for the effective and efficient operations of all systems for the agency. Robertson earned her undergraduate degree from Mississippi State University and attended the John C. Stennis Institute of Government State Executive Development program. For the past two years, she has served as president of the Executive Board of the National Association of State Retirement Administrators. In addition to following MSU athletics, Robertson enjoys cooking, cross-stitching and boating.

As the first-ever female Director of the Mississippi Legislative Budget Office, Debbie Rubisoff leads a technical staff support team necessary to enable the Joint Legislative Budget Committee and the Legislature to adopt a balanced state budget. She supervises 24 employees, including eight budget analysts. Prior to becoming Director in 2011, the Missouri-born Rubisoff served the agency as Deputy Director. She believes her work is vital to providing complete transparency of the budgeting process for the State of Mississippi. A graduate of Delta State University, Rubisoff is the mother of three children, all of whom are working professionals. During her children’s early years, Rubisoff served as a Cub Scouts leader and volunteer at Jackson Prep. She enjoys gardening and spending time at the beach.

Emily Sanders may be young, but she’s well-known by colleagues to take control of most any situation. Sanders often shows her “can do” attitude as Events Coordinator for Jackson’s historic Fairview Inn. Never acting as though a job is beneath her, the Jackson native occasionally will don a uniform to work a banquet, if necessary. When Sanders isn’t handling catering responsibilities, she manages the Fairview’s 1908 Provisions restaurant. She began her career path in the hospitality industry at age 15 in a small Canton restaurant and went on to hold several internships while in college. A skilled calligrapher, Sanders is most proficient in event styling and coordination in the planning process for everything from weddings receptions to corporate affairs. When Sanders isn’t working, she enjoys kayaking.

R & R Rentals and Hotshot, Inc., provides over 80% of all Oil Field Rental Equipment on Drilling Sites for the State of Mississippi, Alabama and parts of Louisiana. They also offer a complete line of Trucking Services for the Oil Field Industry. In 2011 Smith was recognized as one of the “Top Five Women Owned” businesses in the State of Mississippi. Prior to starting R & R Rentals and Hotshot, Inc., Smith served in the Army. In early 2013, Smith’s entrepreneurial spirit led her to open Quarter Century, LLC, a high-end fashion boutique, selling the thriving business later in the year. Active civically in Jones County, Smith donates her time and money to many organizations, including Zac’s House in Laurel. In her spare time, Smith writes poetry and enjoys a good game of golf.

Amy Tate is the Government Relations Manager for the Tennessee Valley Authority. At TVA, Tate is responsible for maintaining bipartisan working relationships with local, state and national government officials. Before joining TVA, the Natchez native was special assistant to the mayor of Tupelo, where she coordinated public relations efforts for the mayor and city departments. She also participates annually in local fund raisers through memberships in the Belhaven Garden Club and the Women’s Council of REALTORS. Prior to joining First American, Vessell worked for Delta Title and Ten Mile Title. A graduate of the University of Mississippi, she is considered a home warranty expert and was named by both the Mississippi and Jackson associations of REALTORS as “Affiliate of the Year” in 2013. Vessell is an active member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she serves as a substitute Sunday school teacher and Chair of the Catechism Recognition Reception. On the job, Walker vigorously promotes healthy living for Mississippians through her office’s worksite wellness program. The Drew native earned her medical degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and Master’s degree from the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Walker is a member of the Jackson chapter of Links, Inc., and provides positive messages to help reduce childhood obesity among African American females. The Everyday Gourmet is Mississippi’s largest independent gourmet retailer featuring the finest in Mississippi made products, gift baskets, gourmet foods, cookware and tableware. And now The Everyday Gourmet is moving away from its current location into the former O'Charley's Restaurant building on County Line Road in Jackson. Walters hoped for the new store to be open by Oct. 1, which would be in time to make the most of the holiday shopping season. New flooring, additional lighting and other interior improvements such as painting are planned, Walters has said.

Rebecca Lee Wiggs is a Member Attorney of Jackson law firm Watkins & Eager, a full-service, diversified firm specializing in a multitude of practice areas. Wiggs was admitted to the Mississippi Bar, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the U.S. Court of Appeals in 1985. Her experience spans from general product liability and medical malpractice to labor and employment, consumer finance and appellate advocacy. Prior to joining Watkins & Eager, Wiggs was a law clerk to the Honorable Paul H. Roney, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Wiggs received her law degree from the University of Virginia after graduating from Wake Forest University.
