Schubert excited to be new OIS art teacher

Kelsey Schubert is now officially one of the newest additions to the Oxford School District as the art teacher for Oxford Intermediate School.

The Baldwyn native originally came to Oxford because of her husband’s job running local branch of Action Pest Control. His family owns the main branch in Olive Branch while he opened one for the Oxford area. She relocated with him and began working in the Lafayette County School District.

For a little over a year, she worked as an art teacher at Lafayette Upper Elementary. The school did not have a full position available for a certified art teacher, so the job that Schubert had was technically that of a teaching assistant, rather than a fully certified educator. When a full position opened at Della Davidson Elementary

School, she applied. Soon she got a call from the school district and was asked if she would be willing to apply for a position that opened at the intermediate school. Schubert did and was soon offered the job, which she eagerly accepted.

“I’m sad to be leaving Lafayette,” she said. “I loved where I was, and I loved the teachers I was able to work with during my time there, but I’m excited about the new opportunities this job will provide.”

Schubert said that she has always had a love for visual arts. Her aunt is a professional artist and even taught at Northwest Community College for some time. Her cousin is also an art teacher. Schubert describes her mother as always having had a knack for crafting. When it came time to select a major, Shubert said that she knew she wanted to teach and she knew she loved art, so it all fell into place. She enrolled

Because of this specialized degree program, Schubert was able to spend near equal amounts

of time working in a studio as well as a classroom, learning different ways to educate children while engaging them in interesting and challenging art projects.

“I do genuinely enjoy seeing the kids learn,” she

said. “Most of the time, the kids can tell that I really, really love art. They can tell that, so I think it rubs off on them. For some kids, this is their only outlet. They don't enjoy anything else in school, so this is an opportunity for them to find something they love.

Watching them learn new processes and taking them out of their comfort zone is always fun.”

As for a favorite method of making art, Schubert said that she could never tie herself down to just one.

When she was in college she spent so much time working with many different art styles and she found herself enjoying nearly all of them. She loves working with ceramics, oil painting and paper sculpting. Drawing is not her favorite, but she does it and appreciates its role in the artistic process.

She said that one of the many things she is excited about this school year is having the ability to work

with an older group of kids.

At Lafayette, Schubert worked with third, fourth and fifth graders. The intermediate school serves fifth and sixth graders. She said that though she loved working with that age group, she is excited to see what challenges and opportunities will come from working with an older group of kids who will be able to hand more in-depth projects.

“I guess I’m mainly looking forward to learning about how they do things and learning from the people there,” she said. “Every where I’ve been, I’ve enjoyed meeting the new teachers and figuring out how they do stuff and how I can use that. I guess it comes down to figuring out how to be a better teacher.

It's because you wouldn't give them the information or roll the window down. Your attitude and the things you're doing make them think something is going on and then they pull you out of the car.”

Laws have changed over the years, and East said things have become more liberal in regards to how people look at the law. He reminded that the laws are made by legislators and not the officers. If an individual doesn't like the laws, they need to contact the ones that made the rules rather than engage the officers who are trying to do their job.

“Law enforcement is caught in the middle,” East said. “For instance, let's take the war on drugs. What you get is the legislature writes a law saying this is illegal. You enforce it. You don't care what the law is. I particularly don't agree with a lot of the laws they have, but I swore I would uphold them. So you enforce them and then you get all this negativity because they feel like the law is out of date and should be changed.

Summer Fest Returns to the Square

This Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Courthouse Square in downtown Oxford will be bustling with closeout summer sidewalk sales and children’s activities during the Oxford Square Summer Fest.

Summer Fest is an event coordinated by the Oxford Square Alliance and is meant to encourage downtown foot traffic at the end of a slow sales month, while giving families an activity that everyone can participate in.

The event was originally planned by the Square Alliance as a way to coordinate the sidewalk sales businesses were doing on the Square.

If all of the sales were held the same weekend, more customers are likely to turnout, benefitting everyone. Five years ago, the alliance had the idea to make it a family event by putting family friendly games and activities on the courthouse lawn to give children something to do during the event.

Will Hunt of Hunt Marketing handles the promotion of the event. He said that timing the schedule the way it is now is to both help local businesses on the Square clean out their summer supply in preparation of the fall, stimulate the local economy with an increase in retail sales and restaurant visits as well as just having an event that gets people out of the house and on the Square to enjoy the summer sun.

Activities available that day include bouncy houses, face paintings, free cotton candy, balloons and snow cones.

Andi Bedsworth will also be there to provide fun and engaging art activities for kids attending the event. In past years, different games have been switched out. When the Summer Fest first began, they had a dunking booth featuring Ross Bjork. The athletics director was new to town and it was a great way for him to become acquainted with the community outside

Mark Huelse is the president of the Oxford Square Alliance and said that while there are some things can stay with the event each year, new games and activities need to be added to keep things different and that alone can be an exciting challenge.

“The first year we did this was Ross Bjork’s first year in town,” Huelse said. “So doing the dunking booth with him was

an easy PR move, and we also did it with some aldermen. Now, once you go through 10 people the first year, the second year you really struggle to find 10 more. By the third year, you’ve gone through 20 people and it’s time to find something new. It was a fun thing to do, but from a management standpoint, you gotta change things up every year. Keeping things different.”

pletely free and open to the public. All of the games and activities are free for the kids as well as all of the treats like cotton candy and snow cones.

The event is meant more to encourage people to get out and spend time on the Square rather than function as a fundraiser.

Both Huelse and Hunt said that they enjoy Summer Fest. Hunt said that the Summer Fest always has a great turnout and seeing everyone outside

“I absolutely love it,” Hunt said. “I grew up in Oxford and I love the events that we are a part of. I love that the Square embraces family friendly and free activities that are open and free for anyone to come and enjoy. Saturday night beginning at 10 p.m., Off Square Books will be filled with magic and wonder during the midnight release party for J.K. Rowling’s latest installment in the wizarding world titled “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”

All muggles, squibs and fans alike are welcome to the party that bookstore staff have been planning since the book’s release date was announced.

Copies of the book are not allowed to be purchased until 12:01 a.m., but calling the store and asking to reserve a copy will guarantee patrons both a copy of the book and two spots at the party. Fire code at Off Square Books will only allow for up to 200 people to be in the building at one time, so bookstore staff strongly urges those wishing to attend the party to call in and reserve a copy.

The bookstore has several games and activities planned to help pass the time until the book’s release. Attendees will have the opportunity to play a game of Toss the Snitch.

There will be a photobooth set up where people can take their Azakaban mug shot. A cut out of the flying Ford Anglia from “The Chamber of Secrets” will also be set up for photos.

There are several other activities and games planned that include prizes for those competing. Those who complete some of the

more difficult tasks might even receive a special homemade chocolate frog.

Themed refreshments will also be available for those at the party. There will be a cauldron of Polyjuice Punch that, while the transformative properties have been removed, is assured to be delicious.

Hot dogs made out to look like the spider followers of Aragog, butterbeer cupcakes and broomsticks made of pretzels and cheese will also be available.

Bookstore staff members working that night will be in costume for the party and encourage everyone to dress up and represent their favorite house or character. If enough people show up decked out in wizarding garb, a costume contest will be held.

“I love trying work out the logistics for something this big,” said Paul Fyke, a senior bookseller at Square Books who has overseen the planning of the release party. “I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, but it’s been a long time for me since I’ve been involved in anything Harry Potter. I caught on to it pretty late, by most standards I came in and the fourth or fifth book and tore through them in just a couple weeks. I then went to midnight release parties for the sixth and seventh books. For this one, it’s been nice to rediscover Harry Potter in this way.”

On the other side of things, the party needed decorations, games, prizes,

store-themed snitch buttons and so much more.

That was where Head of Shipping Karen Kettles came into the picture.

“For me, I loved the creativity aspect of it all,” said Kettles “I’m kind of a craft supply hoarder, so this has been a lovely and fun way to use some of my stash.

When the last two Harry Potter books were released, I was working at Barnes and Noble. I’m looking forward to taking it to 11 from what I experienced working through them.”

Kettells went on to say that she greatly enjoyed the release parties she handled at Barnes and Noble, but the decorations were provided and it had more of a corporate feel to the whole event. At Square Books, she said it feels like the party has come about more organically. The decorations are handmade and the bookstore staff has poured in their love for the series into every aspect of the party. Kettells said that this has made the entire process feel like a much more genuine celebration of one of the most beloved book series in the world.

Shelter on Van Buren will be holding a special Harry Potter Trivia night during the party. Oxford residents made donations to Thacker Mountain Radio The Thacker Mountain Radio Hour has announced two major donations as well as a personnel change for the long-running program. The two donations are each in the amount of $25,000 to be spread out over 10 years.

The donations were made by Tom and Carol Sharpe and Dr. Lisa Chandler, all of Oxford.

The gifts are part of a “sustaining donor” program begun earlier this year with a $25,000 donation by part-time Oxford resident, Ron Feder. The sustaining donor program seeks to enlist large contributions that can put the radio show on solid financial footing to allow for better long-range planning.

Kaye Bryant, chairperson of Thacker’s Development Committee said sustaining donors will ensure the radio show can keep up with ever-increasing production costs.

“The generous sustaining donations from Ron Feder, Lisa Chandler and Tom and Carol Sharpe makes it possible for us to concentrate on finding the best in music and literature to present to our faithful fans. We invite the entire Lafayette County community to come be a part of the best in entertainment each week and watch us grow. And be sure to thank our generous donors!”

Carol Sharpe has been a Thacker fan since she first arrived in Oxford. “When I came to Oxford from another university town and attended my first Thacker Mountain Radio Hour, I immediately recognized it as a gem.” Tom Sharpe adds, “We believe in Thacker Mountain Radio to our core. It is a mar-

velous reflection of all that is good, and strong, and deep in the culture of our community, state and region--expressed in their soulful music and diverse literature."

The radio show, recorded every Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. in spring and fall at Off Square Books on the Square, is broadcast on Saturdays at 7 pm on Mississippi Public Broadcasting. Next year, the show will celebrate 20 years on the air.

The show is currently on a summer tour that will find it performing in Tupelo on Aug. 13, Jackson on Aug. 20 and Ocean Springs on Aug. 27. The show resumes production in Oxford on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Lyric Theatre.

The show will celebrate a new producer/director on Sept. 1 when former Thacker intern Kate Teague takes the reins. The show’s current producer, Kathryn McGaw York, will step down after five years.

Teague, a 2015 Ole Miss graduate, is no stranger to the stage.

She has won music scholarships in her hometown of Mobile, Alabama and worked in Nashville with Vector Management, Rounder Records, and alongside long-time musician, Will Kimbrough. In Oxford, she played guitar and sang for the band, Reels.

“I am beyond excited to accept this position,” Teague said, “and for the chance to continue to work alongside the Thacker family.”

Children that live in and around Abbeville have a new place to burn some calories and have some fun. The First Baptist Church of Abbeville is set to dedicate a new playground Saturday night. The Family Fun Night will feature kickball, volleyball, cornhole as well as hamburgers and sno cones. There is even a mechanical bull for the adults.

Everything is free, and the public is encouraged to attend.

Even after the fun is over Saturday night, the playground will serve a big need for the children of FBC and those that just can't make it to Oxford to run around at Avent Park.

Michele Holt, who is a member at Abbeville First Baptist and a part of the children's committee. Holt said the playground was needed, and wanted.

“Some of the committee volunteers have kids that go to church there and when we started, some on the committee didn't even have kids and there are some that don't have any but they care about the kids,” Holt said. “They care about the kids that go to church there and the community also. The playground is there for the entire community, not just the ones that go to church there.

We want people to say that maybe on a Saturday morning, if you don't want to go to town, you can come to this playground.”

Donations have come over time from members of the church. The committee also

hosted dinners that made money as well as a Paint Night, which allowed people to put color on their own canvas.

“A lot of it has come from us raising money and then people donating to that cause as well,” Holt said.

The playground is made of wood and it features a swing set, a convential slide and then two culvert slides along with some monkey bars. A big expense was the cut up pieces of rubber that was installed as a cushion on the base of the playground. A border goes around the entire project.

For a small town like Abbeville, it's serves a huge purpose to meet the needs of the local children.

Oxford School Board holds July meeting

The Oxford School District held their monthly school board meeting this Monday at 5p.m. in Oxford Middle School.

The meeting began with the recognition of Kelly Graeber and Lauren Hitchcock by the Mississippi Schools Public Relations Association. The two district workers, who comprise the totality of the school district’s public relations team, were recognized for their work in promoting the school district through innovative and well-designed methods. Hitchcock works as the district’s webmaster while Graeber serves as a the public relations contact and oversees marketing.

Graber and Hitchcock won first and second place in the Coordinated School Health category and third place in the Special Purpose Publication category for their work on the Board Advocacy Notes that was developed for their board of trustees.

For the upcoming school year, the district approved the hiring of 42 certified education professionals in the district. Of

Perhaps the most thoroughly discussed points on the board’s agenda Monday evening was the results of a study conducted by the Southern

Research Group in an effort to determine how the Oxford community feels about the school district and the possibility of holding a bond referendum. The study was put together using 300 phone interviews that were conducted with registered voters living within the Oxford School District.

A total of 81 percent of the people interviewed

had positive views of the school district their performance in the community. Of the 300 people interviewed, 87 percent of

those who had children in the district gave the district and “Excellent” or “Good” rating. In terms of school leadership, 83.6 percent of participants with children attending Oxford Schools said that the schools are being well managed while 75.3 percent had positive feelings of the leaders within the school district.

These along with the other statistics the research group provided showed that public opinion of the OSD has increased quite a bit from the last couple years. The purpose of the study was to properly gage where the district stood with the public and whether or not that public would be willing to support the school district in an endeavor to build an additional elementary school to cope with the rising number of younger students in the district. As of now, the new elementary school is in the very earliest stages of

planning, but the board is now taking steps to bring about the bond referendum that would bring in the funding necessary to build the additional facility school.

Also discussed at the meeting was the possibility in integrating a rewards-type program for district employees. The program would allow employees to present their district identification at local businesses and receive a discount. The program would not be applicable to principles, the superintendent or school board members, but would include everyone else from new custodians to longtime teachers. Bad hair day at the Fair Jim Dees Tales of the Town

T

he 127th Neshoba County Fair, outside of Philadelphia, MS, wraps on Friday and this year’s edition brought the usual mix of politics, family reunions and the searing red dirt heat. I’ve become such a spoiled couch spud, I semi-balk every year when it’s time to load up and spend the weekend. (Oxford is well represented, by the way.

Members of the Howorth family are regulars as well as Rosie and Steve McDavid, Charlie Mars and even the Thacker Mountain Radio show). You have to psyche yourself for the experience.

Lodging for the weekend is a three-story, partially air-conditioned, wooden cabin that sleeps 30 or more with two showers. This year we had eight children under the age of 3 – all staying for the weekend. With crowded conditions and the furnace-like heat, it’s a tribute to everyone there was no major melt-down or unnecessary drama.

Gatherings like “the Fair,” as it’s known, are vanishing in our sped-up world. Who has the time (or energy) to take a week off and basically camp out with their extended family (and 50,000 strangers) on the hottest days of the year. As it turns out, plenty of people. At my cabin, like hundreds, three meals a day are concocted for over two dozen people for a week. Our sleeping rooms are air-conditioned but most of the day is spent on the back porch under eight roaring fans.

As I write this on Tuesday, Donald Trump, Jr. was scheduled to speak at the racetrack stage located inside a half mile red clay track. His father, The Donald, was invited and the campaign mulled the offer but apparently logistics and security were concerns. At least, that was the public answer. I believe there was a very different reason: his hair.

Much has been made of how weird Mr. Trump’s hair is and jokes about it probably number in the millions. I watched him on TV during his convention last week and found myself really checking out his hair, particularly on the sides where he combs it up and over his ears.

The combed area sits unnaturally high on his head as if by

magic. It’s sort of a duck tail from the 1950s updated with modern technology.

That hair, ostensibly the best that money can buy, would be no match for the withering Neshoba County humidity.

That’s why I think The Donald sent his son in his stead. If Trump Sr. had gone to the Neshoba racetrack and spoken to the throng of thousands for 45 minutes, his hair would have come unglued and collapsed around his head and shoulders.

It wouldn’t have been a good look.

I’m trying to visualize what it might look like and the closest I can figure is, he would have had Rick James-like Jheri curls.

and humidity at the Fair is another animal. He would be reduced to a puddle. All the cabins block the wind and you’re left to fry in the sun, sweat pouring onto the red dirt until it turns to mud the color of sweet potatoes.

The Fair is a unique setting and if you were born going, like so many Mississippians have over the years, you just go every year. It’s a chance to catch up with family – including meeting all those newborns – and eating a multitude of casseroles. Oxford and Lafayette County probably had a county fair years ago but now with Double Decker and home football games, we have more than enough opportunities to put out the welcome mat and host

big weekends. Generations return to Oxford, as they have for football games all their lives, after being born into it. Like the Fair, you simply go every year.

Such traditions are handed down like family recipes for each succeeding generation to put their own stamp on the experience in order to hand it down again. There must be some reason people will interrupt their lives to go be miserably hot for a week (or weekend) without a shred of privacy, stacked in like sardines, and to blow their diets with spectacular abandon.

Continuity? Genetics? Habit?

Or maybe because it’s just good to see your family and it’s fun; and it reminds you of your very first memories of fun.

Republican National Convention a big hit with Yoste, MS delegates

Geoffrey Yoste knows how to have a good time. So when he says the Republican National Convention, held in Cleveland, Ohio last week, was one of the best times he's had, the almost week-long event must have been electric.

“I had never attended one before and I kind of thought I knew what to expect but it was over the top.

It was busy, busy, busy with so much going on with events,” said Yoste, who attended the RNC with his wife Julie and youngest son. “There was a breakfast or sponsored brunch each morning, a sponosored lunch and dinners in the evening. Then you went into the conventional hall, which was just amazing with the electricity there.”

Yoste was one of three from Lafayette County to attend convention from a delegate standpoint.

William Alias and Donna Ruth Roberts also attended.

He said Karen Elam was unable to attend. Yoste, who is a member of the Lafayette County Republican Executive Committee, said the Mississippi delegation had a great week spending time with each other.

Ohio Governor John Kasich was the man Yosted stumped for during the primary season, even appearing on MSNBC in front of the student union on campus prior to voting in Mississippi. Him being for Kasich wasn't going to stop Yoste from coming together with others from the GOP to support Donald Trump at the convention.

“It wasn't as exciting for me from a loyalty standpoint because my guy didn't get it. For me, as long as I can remember, I've always supported someone who didn't get out of the primary. It wasn't such a big deal other than Trump is such a controversial candidate,” Yoste said. “It was different and still a lot of fun. I pledged to be a delegate for Trump and I'm going to support him and vote him.”

Yoste came away impressed with Trump's pick for a running mate, Mike Pence, the governor of Indiana.

“I didn't know that much about him prior, but after some study on him, I'm thrilled about the resume with him being a conservative congressman for a dozen years and being a can-do, job-creating governor,” Yoste said. “I think he will serve the ticket well, and conversely, I think Hillary Clinton's VP pick will serve her well. Now, what's different is the guy that turned the (Republican) party upside down is the head of the ticket and the guy that nearly turned the Democratic party upside down, Bernie Sanders, he didn't get it and now, what they're having to deal with at their convention, is that they find out the DNC has been conspiring against the upstart Bernie Sanders, which has people all up in arms.”

The feelings toward Trump grew every day at the RNC, Yoste said. Outside of the one speech given by former candidate Ted Cruz, Yoste felt everyone was pulling in a positive direction. Yoste felt Cruz was “tacky” for the speech he gave, and Cruz was panned for it, even by his supporters.

“It was like inviting somebody over for your party and they eat your refreshments and dance to your music and before they leave, they turn the punch

bowl over,” Yoste said. “It was just rude. He shouldn't have not spoken or said let's go beat Hillary and given a lukewarm endorsement. A lot of people were upset at Kasich for not coming on board, and I wanted him to frankly. But by the same token, I respect him standing by his convictions saying he wasn't there for (Trump) yet. His sentiment was not to come to his party rather than come and not embrace him.”

Cleveland had a lot of security set up around the convention, and Yoste said everything was handled well. He said the city is going through a renissance and that the folks who work in the service industry, hotels included, were very friendly.

“I think they were appreciative of us being there. I think by the time it was over they were glad we were all gone. I never felt safer in my life than I did that week,” Yoste said. “The highway patrol from a dozen different states there and that's not even mentioning the folks from the Ohio National Guard that were there. It was safe and the convention went well.

My favorite speaker was Laura Ingraham and then I liked Pence's speech second best. Trump's wife did a great job. I was disappointed to learn that some

of the lines were lifted from Mrs. Obama's speech.

Most of the lines were cliché anyway. Julie my wife

had never been and she had a great time. I was there went Trump came on board and I was there when his daughter spoke and she is very, very impressive young woman.”

John Owen Yoste was able to work for the Mississippi Republican Party while in Cleveland. Each day he helped delegates sign in to receive credentials and John Owen was able to meet Mississippi's top leaders such as Gov. Phil Bryant and Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann as well as congressional leaders such as U.S. Senator Roger Wicker.

“That was a real neat deal for him and he got to go to some of the social engagements that were somewhat kid friendly,” Yoste said. “He had a neat experience that I don't think I could replicate for him. I'm glad that he was able to get to do that.”

Leaving Cleveland, Yoste felt that the Republican party was “75 to 80 percent” behind Trump. Prior to the convention, he felt

like the party was “60 percent” on board with Trump.

“I think you're going to have 5 to 10 percent that may never get on board, but the good news is, from a numbers standpoint, Donald J. Trump has brought so many new people into it that he may make up for that difference,” Yoste said. “Is that enough to win? I don't know. At each of the breakfasts we had different speakers and Karl Rove said if takes Ohio and Florida, he has a great shot at winning. He also told Trump that he would never get California or New York but that he might be able to take Iowa, which has voted Democratic recently. If he can get a few of these battleground states, it will be a close one and there is a chance that Trump can pull this thing out. This year’s focused on the fermentation process with an emphasis on sauerkraut, but Choinski addressed other vegetables that could be changed and arguably upgraded through fermentation.

“It’s a class about how to ferment your own sauerkraut and pickles,” Choinski explained before the class. “I won’t be doing any cooking. During the class, we’ll be preparing cabbage to be turned into sauerkraut. We’re just gonna be doing sauerkraut, but with pickles, it's absolutely something I can talk about during this because it’s the same concept.”

Growing up in upstate New York, Choinski said that many of the people she grew up around used their basements to store different kinds of fermenting vegetables, including a lot of sauerkraut. She said that her family always made a lot of pickles, but she only began experimenting with sauerkraut about a year ago. Choinski

said that once she got the methodology down, she ran with it.

“I always have some going,” she said when asked how often she makes sauerkraut in her own home. “I like it. I grew up where people had basements and almost everyone had crocks of sauerkraut and pickles in their basement. It’s just something I really like doing. We also make a lot of Reubens. It’s delicious and it’s really great to make your own. It’s the best.”

Those attending the seminar ranged in age from fresh out of college to retirees. In the back of the auditorium by the entrance, three bowls were set out on a table where attendees could sample fermented snap peas, beets and sauerkraut. Sitting beside the bows was a handout that Choinski prepared that contained much of the information she would be sharing with everyone and even included a step-by-step guide with pictures that walks the reader through the fermenting process.

CHANING GREEN

Buffy Choinski stands at the front of the Lafayette Oxford public library Saturday afternoon, explaining the science behind fermination to those attending the seminar.

Once it reached 2 p.m., Choinski stood in front of the crowd and began walking everyone through the process of fermentation. Being a scientist, she was able to provide a very detailed explanation of what turned cabbage into sauerkraut. Choinski explained that cabbage is

sauerkraut its characteristic tartness and bite.

Choinski invited two volunteers up to the table that she had set up at the front of the auditorium.

Each volunteer was given a quart jar and a giant bag of cabbage. They pulled form bag and crammed as much cabbage into the

full of sugar. By creating a brine, a salt and water solution, and letting the cabbage sit in that brine in a sealed jar for an extended period of time, it creates the perfect environment for certain bacteria. This bacteria consumes the sugars in the cabbage and converts them, giving

jars as they could fit.

Choinski told them not be afraid to really pack the shredded cabbage into the glass jars. After the jars were filled, the pair topped the jars off with special lids that would allow for the gases generated by the bacteria to escape the jar, without letting in air.

Sunny and Eli Baker attended the seminar. The married parents-to-be said that they had tried making sauerkraut in the past, but could not get it to turn out correctly. The Bakers have a plot at the community garden and said that ideally, they would like to ferment some of what they have grown in the garden.

“We tried making our own sauerkraut a little while ago and it just got moldy,” said Sonny. “We came here to figure out what we’re doing wrong. Healthy again, OM's Engels is free to showcase his running ability

C

raig Engels was close, real close, to making Team USA and punching his ticket to Rio for the 2016 Olympics.

The Ole Miss junior distance runner from Pfafftown, North Carolina performed at a high level earlier this month in Eugene, Oregon at the Olympic trials. He competed in both the 800 and 1,500 meters, setting personal records in both.

He finished fourth in the 800 with a time of 1 minute, 46.03 seconds. He ran a school-record time of 3:37 in the 1,500 to finish fifth. The top three in each race advanced to the Olympics. Engels didn't hang his head by any means. He was disappointed, yes, but pleased with his results as a whole.

“It's funny because I think I was the only fourth-place finisher that was happy at the Olympic trials,” Engels said. “If you go in with low expectations and you do well, you come out happy. I went in just hoping to run a couple of races. I was hoping to get into the next round in the 800 and then possibly get into the 1,500. Six races later, I was over the moon and back. I couldn't be happier with how I did.”

Engels had a fantastic finish to a very strong 2016 in outdoor track. For the North Carolina State transfer, running is a lot about confidence. A couple of weeks before the trials, his coach, Ryan Vanhoy, had him do a workout that turned out well, boosting his confidence level.

“I went in with nothing to lose. I think that combined with the ball rolling down the mountain and it never stopped until the end of the 1,500,” he said.

Ole Miss is a school that Engels has grown to love. He said it was such a different college compared to when he first came on a visit and was thinking about leaving N.C. State.

“I was sold immediately with the guys on the team. I like the whole atmosphere of a college town because N.C. State is in a big city,” Engels said. “I enjoy the whole atmosphere of Ole Miss and I continue to.

I've enjoyed my time probably than any other time in my life at Ole Miss. Running healthy and running well has been a big part of that.”

Ole Miss had a milestone season in soccer last year.

Wins over Murray State and Clemson in the NCAA Tournament will be remembered for a long time, and for the players that are returning to the team, last year serves as a motivation for a better 2016.

Melissa Capocaccia is heading into her senior season with the Rebels. The 5foot-3 defensive midfielder from Memphis said the team is working hard in order to keep things moving in the right direction.

“Everyone is excited, everyone is working very hard this summer. We pretty

much have the entire team back and I've been impressed with everyone's attitude and effort across the board,” she said. “Everyone has that standard now and the freshmen expect that standard. I think it's been passed along to our team to raise the bar a little bit.”

Looking back to last season, Capocaccia said it was a fun year all around. She felt like the team really got going last fall when the beat Arkansas and South Carolina. The victory over Arkansas came in the last seconds of the match, in double overtime, while South Carolina was a shutout.

“It wasn't too bad to win at Texas A&M either,”

Capocaccia said with a laugh. “It's been a good battle between us two. It was definitely a good feeling to break their winning streak at home.”

Another trip to the NCAA Tournament, and some more big wins during the regular season, are the goals of the Rebels in 2016.

“There a lot of little goals, but the goal for the end of the season, in the back of our mind, is to be back in the NCAA Tournament,” she said. “My summer has been a little different. I went home and I've been rehabbing my back. It wasn't as strenuous as past summers, but it was in other ways. I had to focus on things that I could do. I had to be out the

first month and a half of the summer and then I could do little things like a bike ride or swimming.”

The back injury has come over the course of her soccer career. Little injuries are something she has endured.

“It's nothing huge, it's something we had to work on,” said Capocaccia who is one of three sisters to play soccer in college. “My sister started playing competitive soccer before any of us. I have another older sister as well. My middle sister started playing when I was in the second grade. It was the kind of thing where I would always be out there watching her and the coach TURN TO SOCCER PAGE 21

Ready to Go Seventh-grade Chargers hold mini camp to prepare for 2016

Football season arrived in earnest for those wanting to become members of the Oxford seventh-grade football Chargers. The annual three-day mini camp, held by coach Mike Hardwick, was the first exposure to the sport for a few.

For other players is was a continuing process of getting in shape to play the game they have for several years.

One of the perks for coming to the volunteer camp is to get organized for the upcoming season.

If the players give Hardwick their time, he makes sure to set them up with their locker, helmets, game pants and shoulder pads.

Practice after school starts on Monday, so having extra steps taken care of is a big deal for many.

“They got their helmets and they were real excited about that. After the first practice, we gave some positions their shoulder pads and then we give out their game pants and have everything that they need when they come back for regular practice in August,” Hardwick said. “We also put in our base offense besides all the equipment they need. We put in everything that we're going to build off of so we're ready to go in August. They will know all the terminology and of course they are getting acclimated to the heat, especially for some of the big guys. It's been hot, it's difficult and it takes time to get used to that.”

There is a direct correlation between the camp and the success of the Chargers. Hardwick has held it for 12 years and over the last five or six years, the entire staff, all the way up through 12th grade, Hardwick felt like things have been identified that work in regards to football.

“If you come to a seventh grade game and then come to a Friday night game, on a smaller scale,

it's the same. The plays are the exact same. It's a smaller scale version, but you're going to look at the same product,” Hardwick said. “For the younger kids, that's exciting. They want to look like Oxford High and they want to run what Ole Miss runs on Saturday, those exciting plays, and we do that. I think that's been the biggest change over the last five or six years that the coaching staff from the head coach down to the seventh grade, which is me. We've all gotten on the same page.

We've changed a whole lot in the middle school. It's not anything like it was when I came. It's totally different, and all for the better.”

More time is spent with the players compared to when Hardwick first started at Oxford. Playing for three straight MHSAA Class 5A titles didn't just happen for the Chargers.

Those runs were built starting in the seventh grade.

“I think we've seen that and the Buccaneers has been invaluable to us.

That's another piece of the program, an extension of the seventh and eighth grade program,” Hardwick said. “Dr. (Jack) Abraham and I talk from now until November. We talk everyday. I talk more to him than I do to the head football coach because he's the pipeline to me. I'm the pipeline for the varsity. It all works together. We consider the Bucs as our feeder, as a part of the Oxford school district.”

Technology has made things easier for Hardwick during the season. He is in constant touch with the parents and he tries to communicate hydration and nutrition. In years past, if Hardwick didn't see a player, there wasn't a way for him to communicate with them or the families as well.

If we can find between 50 and 60 seventh graders, we can identify some football players,” Hardwick said.

“We've actually had more kids in the eighth grade than in the seventh grade the last few years. I think if they decide not to go out for football in the seventh grade, once they get around the coaches or around the equipment, they see and want to be a part of it. I think you will see that this year, some kids that could play but don't play for whatever reason and then want to be a part of it and come out in the eighth grade.

“There were options to get on the professional circuit. I don't know how much money I would have made, and that's not the driving factor in my decision,” Engels said. “Really, this team we have going on at Ole Miss, we're going to be really good next year.

I can't leave the guys. Regardless of my possibly turning professional next year, if I stay healthy, I will stay in Mississippi and train with Coach Vanhoy. Versatile Commodore DE Armani Johnson a tough matchup up front

Armani Johnson has always done his talking on the football field for the Lafayette Commodores. The senior defensive end made his mark on the team last season, and this year, he is looking to do even more.

Johnson has gotten stronger in the weight room and really impressed his new head coach, Michael Fair, who was familiar with him when he coached at Senatobia.

“I remember him from last year and knew big No. 36 was over there and he was physical and would disrupt our run game if we let him,” Fair said about Johnson, who had 68 tackles in 2015. “A lot of times we tried to go away from him last year to be honest. We knew he was a good player when we all got here and he has just been a model of consistency in the weight room and in our offseason stuff. He doesn't say a whole lot, but everyone of his teammates knows where he stands. He's the same every day and he's going to work hard.”

Even though Johnson was a good player last season, Fair was counting on him being better this coming fall. Johnson can do a lot of different things in the new scheme due to his overall length at 6-foot-2. He may even go out and cover an opposing offensive player.

“We've got some things where we will drop him back a little bit. The thing that is going to separate him apart is his ability to get away from the linemen that are trying to block him,” Fair said. “He's strong. He's got some length and he's able to separate and see what's going on and shed that block and make some plays. We're excited about that.”

Drew Tapp has gone against Johnson in practice at tackle and he knows how tough he is to block. The one-on-one matchups in pass protection has really given new respect for Johnson.

“He's a great athlete. He's got a great frame. He's super fast and he knows how to use his weight and his hands,” Tapp said. “He's good, he really is.

He's got great hips.”

Johnson thought his effort

level was better than what it was last season, and that's bad news for teams Lafayette plays.

“I think I've gotten quicker off the ball. Besides that, I'm not sure how much I've changed, yet,” Johnson said. “I think I increased my bench by 10 or 15 pounds. My squat, I used to not be able to do four plates and now I can.”

Johnson had high expectations for the Commodores in 2016, adding that he thought they could go all the way to the Class 4A title.

“For myself, I'm expecting to play every play as hard as I can, as long as I'm on the field,” he said. “I feel like the results will take care of themselves.”

If Lafayette wins 10 or 11 games this year, Johnson said he wanted those wins to come in the state playoffs, or more specifically, the state championship. There are many who feel like the Commodores will contend for a title, and Johnson said that shouldn't be a surprise.

“We've been in the playoffs each of the last few years. We're really just trying to change the bottom of our scoreboard to add another year to it,” Johnson said about winning a title.

Johnson said that Fair was “great” and that he was more of a player's coach.

“He's experienced it in the past. He had a stint in the NFL and he brings a high level of experience to it,” Johnson said. “I like his aura you can say.”

All of Johnson's eggs are in the football basket. That's his main priority and he would like to keep playing after high school.

“I want to get some offers. I don't have any yet. I've thought about (college) some and there are some schools that have some interest,” Johnson said. “It's definitely that has come up a bit.”

A player that could surprise people this year, Johnson said, was linebacker BJ Curry.

“He's a high effort guy. He's an underclassman, but he does his best to take on a leadership role. It's impressive,” Johnson said. “Coach has a pretty good trust in him, too. I think there is going to be a lot going for him.”

Commodores have depth, experience to build with in 2016

When linebacker Zach Cunningham first arrived at Vanderbilt, the Commodores were headed to their second bowl game in a row, and a win away from 10. The past two seasons, Vanderbilt has only won seven games total, and just two in the SEC. The redshirt junior from Pinson, Alabama is looking to change the outcomes of the last two seasons this fall. Derek Mason is heading into his third season as the head coach of the Commodores, who are as experienced as any team in the SEC. Vanderbilt returns eight starters on both offense and defense, two on special teams and total of 56 letterwinners from 2015.

Of those 56 players that earned a letter, 42 of them are either a junior or senior.

The defense improved in Mason's second season.

He started to call the plays on that side of the ball, and the Commodores were in a lot more games, losing three by a total of 13 combined points.

Cunningham, who finished with 103 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 2015, said Mason drives home playing tenacious on defense each week.

“He preaches to play relentless on defense, striving to dominate,” Cunningham said. “That's what we look to do week in and week out, forcing our will on the opponent. The sea-

South Carolina visits Vanderbilt to open the season, and Cunningham has only been focused on the Gamecocks. That game could decide a lot in how the Commodores do the remainder of the season.

Mason said a lot of people thought he was crazy to go back and all the defense, but it was his strength and it turned into a strength for the Commodores.

“These guys understand the expectation in the room of making sure that they play well, that they understand how to play with each other,” Mason said. “That we communicate, that we understand situational football, and that we try to entrench ourselves in what it takes when you stand up and stand out. That's what we are, and that's what we're looking for, and that's what we plan on being in 2016.”

Every single starter is back in the secondary for Vanderbilt, including cornerback Torren McGaster, who finsihed with 13 pass breakups in 2015.

Vanderbilt struggled to find any real consistency on offense. Quarterback Kyle Shurmer saw action late in the season as a freshman, and Mason has been pleased with how he's worked during the season.

Three offensive linemen return to protect for Shurmer, while three wide receivers with experience return. The top pass catcher is Trent Sherffield, who had 51 grabs for 659 yards and three touchdowns last season.

The biggest threat for the Commodores on offense is tailback Ralph Webb, who established a sophomore record with 1,152 yards in 2015. That was the fourth highest rushing total in the SEC among returners.

Mason said Webb was a tireless worker, a player who arrives first to the weight room and leaves only after every one else has.

He's taken the hints, the subtle hints that aren't so subtle like pick your feet up, like get stronger, like increase your vision and your ability to be a more complete back,” Mason said.

“You know, he doesn't shy away from those things. He lets us hold him accountable for every bit of the work that he's doing. So, I think what you see is a guy that's got a full growth

mindset in terms of what he wants to be. You saw him move from year one to year two without having a sophomore slump. He didn't have the same personnel around him, but still did well. He's a team-first guy. I fully expect Ralph Webb to be a multidimensional back. As we step into this year, he needs to be better on third down, catching the ball in backfield, better in pass pro, if

he wants to play every down. That's something we've openly talked about.

And he's taking that challenge.”

Fair excited about his first practices at Lafayette

Michael Fair's first football game as the head coach of the Lafayette Commodores is still more than three weeks away. His first official practice will be Monday. Fair, who is in his first season after being hired from Senatobia, has been with the team the past three months, starting with spring drills.

Fair has seen his Commodores arrive early in the morning for workouts, and he likes the chemistry the

team has created.

The first two days of summer practice will be players in helmets only. The shoulder pads go on Wednesday.

“It will be a lot of teaching but we're going to bounce around. Our practices will be intense, and shorter,” Fair said. “They will seem shorter than that due to how we practice and the speed of practice. We will work scheme stuff and tackling drills and blocking drills even though we don't have any pads on. Not only do I think it will help us, but also to show the impor-

tance we're going to put on it.”

The players ran 110-yard sprints 16 times on Monday in order to fine tune from a conditioning standpoint.

Fair said everyone did well with them, and thought the team was in good shape.

“There is nothing we can do right now to get you in game shape,” Fair added.

“Football shape is different.

You can run in the offseason and do a lot of different things. I do think the one thing we're going to do that will separate us is how we practice. If we practice at a

really high tempo and high intensity, I think that will help us get into game shape.”

There are four days of practice before the players report for school. Of course the coaches all teach and they will be in meetings starting on Monday. There will be meetings, and lifting, after lunch for the players during those first four days.

“Football has really changed. We do have them in the summer, and we're going to make the best use of our time,” Fair said.

One area that depth is

needed is at the offensive line. Fair likes his five starters, but he wants to see a couple of additional players step up.

“We're going to have to shore that up quick because we don't have as much depth as other places,” Fair said about the offensive line. “We feel good about our 22 guys but there are some places that we need to get serious about developing some depth and our offensive line is one of them. We need someone to be that No. 6 and No. 7 guy that you need sometimes to

finish out a season.”

Lafayette is returning a number of skill players, including quarterback Will Ard. Fair likes the wide receivers that Ard will throw to in 2016.

“We feel like we have some guys that can stretch the field vertically. Some of those guys will play some defense and some will just play receiver,” Fair said. “It's just a jig saw puzzle getting guys in the right places to help make us successful.” john.davis@journalinc.com Twitter: @oxfordcitizenjd

Oxford cheerleaders have been hard at work this summer

High school football is right around the corner, and the Oxford High cheerleaders have been working hard in preparation for 2016 just like the players. Summer work is not exclusive to the Chargers. The young ladies that support the team also work hard in the summer on their craft.

OHS coach Allison Wally came away pleased with what her team accomplished over the last couple of months.

Oxford qualified and competed in the national cheer competition held at Walt Disney World this past February. As a result, they were able to attend the masters summer camp associated with the Universal Cheerleaders Association.

The elite-level camp allowed four Lady Chargers — Kate Abraham, Ansley Byars, Lexi Nichopoulos and Brynnen Yoste — to earn All-American status which was a big honor to take away from the camp at Ole Miss.

“It was a great experience and we are definitely trying to step our game up a little from where we were,” Wally said. “I think going to a masters camp showed them what it's going to take to get to that level. The teams that

were at that camp were teams that had been going to nationals for years and years. Last year was our first time to go in a decade. We are still building, but I think we have some good, strong girls this year that can get us where we need to be.”

Practice over the summer has included three times a week for two hours in the morning. Once a week Trey Griffin, a consultant through Oxford Cheer, helps on elite-level stunting.

For two weeks after camp, Griffin came in all three days to help cement the things learned at Ole Miss.

“Trey is phenomenal.

He's worked with Ole Miss and I think Northwest Mississippi Community College and last year he helped with another school in Mississippi that went down and won nationals,” Wally said.

“He has really helped us with what we're doing and we have just been so excited to be working with him.”

Wally was hoping that locals noticed all the hard work on Friday nights, and through the separate competition squad.

“Even the ones that aren't competing this year are still very strong and we're planning on doing a lot of stunting on the sidelines where as in the past, it's been kind of haphazard,” Wally said.

For the game day competitions, we will use all 16 of those girls for the traditional competition, we will use 12,” Wally said. “Small varsity is the name of the division that we will be in. The other four girls will be my alternate team in case of injury. And we do not know

who those people are right now.”

The first competition is Oct. 29 and that is for the national one that Oxford took part in Orlando, Florida. Oxford is also hosting its own competition for schools all over North Mississippi and even schools from West Tennessee and North Alabama on Nov. 12.

On Nov. 19, Oxford will also host the MHSAA Junior High cheer competition.

The state competition for cheerleading, hosted by the MHSAA, is on Dec. 17. The nationals will take place again in February, and the dates are the 11th and 12th.

was like 'Why don't you come out and play?' We just kind of fell in love with it and then my older sister started playing competitively as well.”

Soccer just stuck for Capocaccia who said her biggest moment up to this point was playing against both her sisters at Tennessee.

“It was very, very fun.

(Ole Miss) didn't come out with the outcome that we wanted as a team, but as their sister, it was very, very fun,” Capocaccia said. “They would do something good on the field and I would say 'Good job Caroline' as we would be running to chase the ball the other way. It was just back and forth. It was a very fun time.”

Defense is the side of the ball Capocaccia gravitated to because she likes to see things in front of her. She thought it was easier, and on offense, everyone was around her.

“You have a more predictable scenario when

everything is in front of you,” she said.

Gretchen Harknett and Georgia Russell share an apartment, and Mackenze Parma, another senior, has been with Capocaccia since kindergarten.

“Our team isn't really clique. We all hang out with each other. No one person is closer than another,” she said.

Former Lafayette High standout Alley Houghton is now with the Rebels, and Capocaccia said that Houghton brought a lot of personality to the team.

“Usually freshmen are a little timid. She's not afraid,” Capocaccia said adding that each new class is different in their own ways. “Every single class has their strengths and weaknesses, but it's been a good balance with everything.”

Graduate school is where Capocaccia will studying starting in August. Speech pathology was her major and she is interested in working with children with speech impediments.

Cutcliffe pleased with his Chargers heading into summer drills

Chris Cutcliffe has been around his Oxford Chargers all summer. He's seen the returners develop during his coaching tenure and during his first spring this past May. On Monday, Cutcliffe will lead his first official practice as the program's head coach.

All summer, Cutcliffe has done his best to push the Chargers in the weight room, and on the field in various situations. The skill players have gone through a number of 7-on-7 workouts and the team has run and worked on agility in between. Compared to when Cutcliffe was playing for the Chargers, summer drills are different. There are no more two-a-day practice sessions and the last two weeks of the summer were all about getting ready once everything went live.

“We're doing everything

we can to push them to get ready for the heat in August,” Cutcliffe said. “The last two weeks you also want to get some football stuff done to just make sure everything is prepared and everyone knows where they stand heading into fall camp. The biggest focus, to me, is conditioning and that last stretch run heading into camp.”

The first week includes two days in helmets and three days in shells. All of that is mandated by the MHSAA. The coaches are in school starting Monday even if the students don't report for class until Aug. 8.

“It's really not that much different than the season because we have to wait until the end of the day to practice,” Cutcliffe said. “It's kind of like we do all year. Day 6, we get to put on the pads and we'll have a scrimmage that Saturday. Then the next week is really gearing up to play in the jamboree. Then

it's game week against Southaven. At the high school level, you have two weeks of practice and then you're playing your jamboree. We do have them all June and July. You obviously can't put pads on, but you can get a lot of the mental work done before August. So that's helpful.”

One of the last things the Chargers did as a team was to attend a camp in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. That allowed for more training and conditioning.

“It's a lot different when you used to show up on Aug. 1 a few years ago and you had to really get everyone into shape,” Cutcliffe said.

“We really are in shape. Playing in pads is a little different, putting that extra weight on your body. Football shape is a little different than you can get from just running, so there is a little bit of a process there. They show up a lot further along than we did when I played. What's strange to

me is that high school football has the shortest camp period before that first game.

College is a little longer and the NFL is even longer than that. As the levels go up, you have more time to prepare for your first game when you might think it was opposite.”

Players that will see action at the varsity level for the first time usually get more work on tackling. He wants them to do things properly, and safely.

“You want them to use the proper technique and you only get one week in pads and you're playing in a jamboree that Friday night,” Cutcliffe said. “That kind of stuff is a little bit strange in that high school camp is so short. I also understand why.

On the other side of it is safety from heat exhaustion and heat illness. So there is kind of a balance you have to manage.” john.davis@journalinc.com Twitter: @oxfordcitizenjd
