UM student making waves by teaching kids to swim BY CHANING GREEN NEWS WRITER
Down the winding roads of the Woodland Hills subdivision, just north of Oxford, sits the home of the Murphy family. For the past several years, Hayley Murphy has been pass-
ing the sweltering summer days using her family’s pool to teach swimming lessons to children in the community. The Ole Miss junior uses a gentle, yet authoritative voice as she sets 3-year-old Denton Ellis on the side of the pool and tells him that she is going to
back up and he will swim to her. She does so and he follows her instructions, kicking his legs and making large sweeping motions with his small arms. He has to stop once to catch his breath, but the boy soon reaches the other side of the pool where Murphy takes
him into her arms and congratulates him on the successful swim. Murphy is a student at the UM School of Education where she is earning a degree in elementary education. The TURN TO SUMMER PAGE 10
