Preppy gentlemen

Bow ties fit for every flavor of debonair

There’s something gentlemanly about a fellow in a bow tie. He sticks out in a crowd, has a distinct dapper air with a dash of playfulness, too.

“It takes a special person to wear a bow tie,” said Dewayne Porter, “a person with confidence, style, poise. He’s got it together.”

Porter would know. The Corinth native owns and operates his own bow tie and image consulting business, Preppy Gentleman.

Porter had a penchant for style even back in high school, when he would sport ties and loafers to class on just an average day.

It wasn’t until he finished his service in the Navy two years ago that he realized his dream, with the help of his wife, of course.

“She asked me where I saw myself in five years, and I knew I wanted to own my own business.

I just didn’t know what it would be,” he said. “So I prayed on it and Preppy Gentleman dawned on me.”

To get his plan off the ground, Porter first ran a consignment shop from the extra space in his mother’s beauty salon in Corinth.

Now, he crafts and sells bow ties full time from his home while collaborating with a design team based out of Chicago called Dr. Stitch. He makes them out of neckties and even shirts, occasionally.

“People bring me ties from their dad or their grandfather that they want to turn into a sort of heirloom or keepsake,” he said. “I’m making some for a wedding that are specially embroidered. They can be a really personalized thing.

When someone buys a tie from me, they know no one else will have one like it.”

His ties are picking up steam, gaining a solid following on Instagram and Facebook. In addition, he’s currently working with 15

“The one thing I tell them is to be open-minded,” he said. “As far as bow ties go, I think people can be intimidated by the boldness.

But they trust me.”

Once someone tries a bow tie, said MLM owner Jimmy Long, they’re usually converted.

“They don’t turn back,” Jimmy said. “I learned about them when I lived in NewYork. Lots of them were worn onWall Street back in those days.”

Even with quality brands like Robert Talbot and Southern Tide,

bow ties tend to run cheaper than neck ties. Long said neck ties could cost between $85 and $155, while bow ties cost between $45 and $60, depending on the fabric.

“The quality of material makes a huge difference, of course,” Long said. “Flimsy silk is going to wrinkle and come untied, and you don’t want that.”

Reed’s department store is also taking note of the bow tie wave.

According to Jack Reed Jr., president of R.W. Reed Co., the garments are no longer exclusively for the stuffy or professorial.

bow ties, but they’ve really exploded in the past three years or so,” Reed said. “The surge really came from the college age sect, and traveled outward, down to the high school age and up to the young at heart.”

Like Porter, Reed said the tie had become popular for people who want to be different, but still nice-looking. Their colors and patterns range from conservative to far out.

“It’s not your father’s bow tie,” Reed said. “They’re way more vibrant. We have them with tennis rackets, lobsters, one line has

pastel colors with cotton bolls on them. They’ve been very popular.”

Of their six different lines, includingVinyardVines and Ted Baker, Reed said the store carries a tie for anyone, and assured shoppers their sales people will be glad to help school them on how to tie one.

A line Chunn carries, Antelope, features a cork or canvas heel, an open toe and metal studs.

“These are gray metallic wedges, not a stiff clunky wedge,” he said. “Anything that’s metallic gray is really hot right now.”

Chunn is also seeing flat, strappy sandals with a braided look, and cork

wedges with simple leather straps. And flipflops are as popular as ever.

“We carry a line, Fitflop, that Oprah made huge when she gave them away a few years ago,” Chunn said. “Some have fringe on them, some are leather and some are laseretched. Another line we carry, Sanuk, combines canvas and leather for a flip-flop.”

Chunn said his store’s best-seller continues to be Chacos.

“Anything in bright colors or prints from Chacos is big right now,” he said.

TUPELO – Bright colors are in when it comes to women’s shoes this spring.

You’ll see lime green, bubblegum pink, coral, lemon yellow and turquoise on everything from athletic shoes to sandals to pumps.

“Anything in bright colors is supposed to be popular this spring,” said Corey Chunn, store manager for Shoe Country in Tupelo. “They’re especially popular with high school and college-age kids.”

Chunn said when the economic downtown hit in 2008, everybody bought black or brown shoes.

“We went through that stage for a while, with people just wanting basics that went with a lot of things,” Chunn said. “Now that we’re coming out of our shell, companies are coming out with colors again.”

Even nursing shoes are moving away from plain white to eye-popping colors.

“All our nursing shoes are in spring colors, from hot pink to rainbow,” said Peggy Privette, owner of Peggy’s Shoes in Tupelo.

“And your basic pumps are now available in apple green and lemon yellow, with handbags to match.”

Privette said coral is a popular color this spring.

“We’re seeing that not just in shoes, but in handbags and clothing, too,” she said.

Chunn said he’s not selling as many dress shoes for ladies these days.

“Dressy is not trending for us right now,” he said.

Spring ushers in color, practicality for men

Men and women will find something to enjoy with spring’s new trends for men.

Let’s start with the women, because it’s not about them diving into their significant others’ closets. It’s about women dressing up their men.

“We see guys coming in with their girlfriends and she’s saying, ‘You will look good in this,’” said Jack Reed Jr., president of R.W. Reed Co. “We have women come in with the guys to help them pick out the brighter colors. Usually, if they like it, the guys will like it.”

Bright, lively colors abound for men, from shirts to ties to socks.

“It’s coming in daily, a lot of color,” said Joe Yarber, co-owner of MLM Clothiers in Tupelo.

The knit and sport shirts are available in plaids and checks, as well as solids.

Lightweight cotton makes a lot of sense in Mississippi’s climate because spring will turn to summer sooner rather than later.

Toward that warm end, shirts and slacks are available in special fabrics.

“This year, you’re going to see a lot of tech fabrics in sportswear,” Yarber said. “It’s a moisture-wicking product. It’s great for the golf course or the tennis courts, anywhere, really.”

Reed said younger men have been interested in lightweight, long-sleeve sport shirts. It’s a collegiate look, he said.

“You can roll up the sleeves when it gets warm.

At night, you roll it down,” Reed said. “You could say it’s about versatility. You

The Columbia fishing shirt has steadily grown in popularity, and the company has added stripes and gingham checks to its regular stable of solid colors. Part of its success has been the vent in the back.

“I saw a guy wearing one of these shirts to church with a tie,” Reed said. “It’s a sport shirt. It just happens to have that comfortable, breezy back to it.”

Comfort and style combine with one of MLM’s newest offerings, a travel pant by Jack Victor.

“We’ve had customers ask for a travel pant,

something to get on an airplane with and when you get off, it’s not all wrinkled up. You could drive for eight hours in a car and it won’t be wrinkled, and it feels great,” Yarber said. “We have a travel sport coat, too.”

Kühl Pants have attracted interest at Reed’s.

They’re made from lightweight, stretchy fabric with a knee designed to move with the wearer.

“People will buy a pair, then come back for another pair,” Reed said. “It can be a work pant, but it’s also a knock-around pant.”

“Really, they’re just a lot of fun,” said Jimmy Long,

Lacy, lovely, the season’s best looks

A sweet summer breeze is blowing through Northeast Mississippi boutiques.

The spring’s fashions feature popping pastels, delicate neutrals, feminine accents, lightweight fabrics and styles that are versatile, comfortable and good-looking.

“I like the mix of elegant and bright and fun,” said Amber Mooneyham, coowner of Snooty Owl in Tupelo.

There’s a lot of versatility in the spring’s best pieces.

“We’re seeing trends that we can wear in our every day lives that go from desk to dinner date,” said Dale Simmons of Reed’s Department Store.

But relaxed and comfortable doesn’t mean plain.

Even the simplest dresses, tops and pants are likely to have an extra touch like lace, fringe, crochet and embroidery.

“It really takes something that’s simple and dresses it up,” said Kristi Martin, owner of Black Sheep Boutique. “Anything that adds that little bit of detail makes it really feminine.”

Women don’t have to stop with the embellishments the designers created.

Monograms are being used to personalize shirts, bags, swimsuit cover-ups and Converse tennis shoes.

“Monograms are huge,” Martin said. “People can’t get enough of them.”

“I love the way this season mixes the feminine with relaxed styles like distressed denim and updated jogger pants,” said Krista Blanchard of Reed’s Department Store.

Based loosely on the pants you used to wear for gym class, the jogger pant has been given a high style makeover in silks and linens. This new, dressier version keeps the comfort but goes new places.

“You can find them in a variety of prices in denim, linens and silks,” Blanchard said. “You can wear them with lots of different shoes from thong sandals to stilettos.”

Traditional spring and summer staples like linens are as strong as ever, but even they have a new wrinkle. Designers are adding texture that really owns the wrinkles and crinkles that come with the fabric.

“It’s linen with oomph,” said Maggie Waddle, manager for Bliss Boutique, which has locations in Fulton and Tupelo.

Women ready to shed dark winter colors will find pastels like yellow, lavender, coral and apple mint in both subdued shades and near-neon tones.

Neutrals like cream and white and mochas look great together or paired with the neon pastels.

Popular prints range from simple florals to bold geometrics to classic black-and-white. Gingham plaid is even in the mix.

“The clothes are fun,” Simmons said. “You’re almost wearing a piece of art.”

Spring comes ruffling in

The cold has been hanging around for far too long, but warmer weather will bring with it new looks for kids.

And this year, it’s all about the vintage.

Stacey Blaylock, who owns Stacey B Boutique in Tupelo, says that vintage is the way to go this season.

“There’s a lot of lace and ruffles for girls,” she said.

“And there’s a lot of the vintage for both boys and girls.”

Ruffles, tiers, lace and fringe are popular for girls this year, but not too overwhelming to take away from the attire.

“There’s a lot of fun prints in this year,” Blaylock said, “with Aztec designs that seem to be popular. Prints are always fun but I think chevron is

The Daily Journal asked three Northeast Mississippi stores to share their best bets for steals and splurges for shoppers looking for the spring’s freshest looks. Swallows on Main, Ella Ivy Boutique and Reed’s Department Store each took on a distinct look and shared their bargains and their best.

The look: Layered tank tunics

“It’s really bohemian with lots of layers,” said Erica Holloway, owner of Ella Ivy Boutique in Pontotoc. The ruffles and lace and the delicate cream and ivory color combination look great with distressed boyfriend jeans, denim shorts or on their own as a dress.
