Popsy finds a frozen niche in Tupelo

TUPELO – When it comes to popsicles, strawberry makes sense, so does cherry cream, chocolate and blueberry lemonade.

But buttermilk?

“Buttermilk is my favorite,” said Hana George, a 24-year-old Pontotoc resident. “It sounds like it would be bad, but it’s so good. It tastes like cheesecake.”

George has become an expert on popsicles over the summer while running the Popsy Gourmet Frozen Treats cart.

“We had to tell her she had to start paying for them because she was constantly in the cart,” said Chance Beck, co-owner of Popsy and George’s sister. “She called one day and said, ‘I’m spending all my tip money on popsicles.’”

George isn’t the only fan. The Popsy cart gained a following over the past few months, with some customers coming back day after day.

There are two Popsy carts, but one’s been out of order. The working cart has been to the flea market and Tupelo Furniture Market, as well as events atVeterans Park. It spends most of its time in front of Fairpark.

“Now that school’s started back, it’s slowed down,” George said. “On Friday when the food trucks are here, it’s busy.”

The change in seasons was always going to be challenging, said Beck, a 28-year-old Tupelo resident. But she and co-owner Blake Whitehead, 33, of Tupelo, know a gourmet popsicle business can survive because it’s been done before.

“Blake lived in Birmingham for a little while, and there was a gourmet popsicle shop there,” Beck said. “He went on and on about it,

At first, the name was going to be “Pops,” but Whitehead came up with the idea of adding the “y” at the end.

“He called and said, ‘What do you think of Popsy?’” Beck said.

“We use all fresh fruit, so a lot goes into it. We try to be as local as we can,” Beck said. “We get milk and cream from Brown’s Dairy Farm in Oxford. It makes a big difference. The coffee flavor is really good. We get our coffee from Thomas Street Coffee on Coley Road.”

Parham: Agent, volunteer and ‘coolest grandma’

OXFORD – The last time Cynthia Parham was featured in a newspaper, she said she was committed to three C’s: career, community and church.

Now, she has her life narrowed down to three F’s: faithfulness to God, family and the future.

By day, she’s an exclusive agent for Allstate, where she manages two others in her office; by night, she’s a volunteer, faithful church member and a wife, mother and grandmother.

Parham, an Oxford native, has been an exclusive agent for Allstate since 2007.

“I’m an old-time family agent,” she said. “If you need help, that’s what we’re here to do. That’s how I was taught. We are as good as the services we render.”

She takes pride in her office, in which she manages “my girls,” as she calls them – her fellow agents, Ann Vaughn and Gabrielle Goolsby.

“I run a business,” she said. “I don’t run a black business. I don’t run a white business. I run a business. I’m going to give you service with a smile.”

Parham has roles outside of the office, too.

She’s a member of East St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church, where she serves as church clerk and choir president.

Parham is the president of the Oxford Development Association and a member of the OxfordLafayette County Heritage Foundation. The two groups teamed to restore the historic site of the first African-American church in the area. Formerly the Burns Methodist Episcopal Church, and then The Belfry, the building, built in 1910, is now the Burns-Belfry Museum & Multicultural Center.

When Cynthia Parham isn’t at her Allstate office just off Jackson Avenue in Oxford, she keeps busy by volunteering. She’s also a licensed cosmetologist.

The building boasts rotating Civil Rights exhibits, as well as exhibits that honor people who were special in the building’s history.

Next up, the groups hope to acquire kiosks, which will provide oral histories, for the museum.

There’s still work to be done – more fundraising to do, more phases to complete – but Parham remains excited.

And she’s quick to point out she’s one of many people who have made these accomplishments.

“I don’t do anything by myself.

There are many hands,” she said.

“Many hands make light work.”

Parham loves Oxford and wants to make it a better city, but all of her community service also is done with her family in mind.

she’s been married to the “coolest, most wonderful guy,” Thomas Parham Jr., for 38 years.

The couple has two sons.

“These six babies of mine will know their history forever,” she said.

Trustmark’s Barath takes pride in Tupelo’s community spirit

TUPELO – Rashni Barath is a people person.

The South African native’s desk sits right inside the door of the Trustmark Bank at Fairpark. Almost everyone who walks in greets her with a laugh or a story, and Barath knows them by name.

“You know hair dressers hear lots of stories, but you’d be surprised how we do, too,” the 39-year-old said. “With so much banking going digital, you might ask, ‘Why come inside at all?’ People want that human interaction. When people say their grandchild did well in a play or had their first soccer game, I think that’s cool.”

Barath was born in the city of Durban, a metropolis with all the hustle and bustle of a place like Miami, thanks to its strong tourism and manufacturing economies. English is the region’s primary language, but Barath said it officially recognized over a dozen tongues like Swazi and Zulu.

She came to the United States 16 years ago with her husband Navin, also from Durban, to follow his career in information technologies. They lived in south Florida for five years, then spent a year in Tupelo before moving to Canada, just outside of Toronto, for about a year and a half.

“Even though it’s very diverse, Florida was such a culture shock. Canada was fine, but I remember shoveling snow to get out of the garage, then shoveling more snow to get back into

Taste of Tupelo set for November 6 The 2014 Taste of Tupelo presented by Magnolia Business Centre is set for Thursday, November 6 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the BancorpSouth Arena. Elvis Presley Birthplace Trail Project breaks ground in Downtown Tupelo Local development officials broke ground recently on an enhancement and revitalization project connecting Downtown Tupelo to East Tupelo and the Elvis Presley Birthplace. Additionally, the project will improve both traffic flow and efficiency as well as pedestrian comfort and safety.

It has taken years of planning through the partnerships of the Downtown Main Street Association, City of Tupelo, Community Development Foundation and the Mississippi Department of Transportation to make this project possible,” said Downtown Main Street Association Director Debbie Brangenberg. “A revitalized setting will enhance the commerce, community and tourism experience of Main Street

as well as promote economic development projects along the route.”

Modifications and enhancements of the project include repaving and widening East Main Street to five lanes, synchronized traffic signal controls, street trees and green space, sidewalks with bricked pedestrian crosswalks, crossing signals and decorative street lighting, among others.

“Tupelo is well known as an All-America City, but we’re also a first class city with first class citizens.

From the Medical Center, to our schools, to Fairpark, Veterans Park and beyond, everything Tupelo does is first class and this project is nothing less,” said Ward Five Councilman Buddy Palmer.

“The new sidewalks, ramps, crosswalks, street lighting and other enhancements will not only provide a unified corridor connection between two of Tupelo’s greatest historic landmarks, but will also create a safer environment for people who work, live and shop in this area,” said Ward Four Councilwoman Nettie Davis.

The $11.5 million project is funded by the City of Tupelo Major Thoroughfare Program and a $2.3 million transportation enhancement grant awarded by the Mississippi Department of Transportation made available by the Federal Highway Administration.

Renasant Center for IDEAs graduate expands, creates jobs Less than a year after moving into the Renasant Center for IDEAs (RCFI) business incubator, Bryson Law Firm, a former oneman operation, has expanded rapidly, graduating from the program into a larger commercial space in Downtown Tupelo.

Bryson Law Firm offers legal council in a broad range of practices including family law, criminal defense, bankruptcy, estate cases, and more.

A recent graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Law, Kerry Bryson set up his solo practice at the RCFI after searching for local resources that were supportive of start-ups and small businesses. He saw the RCFI as a perfect fit within his business plan.

Bryson notes, “I had a great experience at the Renasant Center for IDEAs. By taking advantage of the Center’s combined services from its professional space and its supportive staff to its low-overhead and builtin infrastructure, my firm thrived in ways I couldn’t have imagined.”

Operated by the Community Development Foundation, the Renasant Center for IDEAs serves as Tupelo/Lee County’s business incubator by lowering startup costs for new businesses and entrepreneurs.

In addition to an affordable office space, services are available to tenants including assistance with business basics, management and financial training, technical, accounting, and research. Since its con-

struction in 2006, 16 businesses have graduated from the Center, creating 374 jobs in Lee County.

Currently, 27 RCFI tenants employ 126 workers.

Outlaw offers everything for ‘total woman’ in Aberdeen

‘Sometimes when I get stuff in my shop, the girls are afraid to try it. …

But most people like to see something on somebody else before they try it.

ABERDEEN – The way Flora Outlaw figures it, she’s worked in retail on Commerce Street for more than 40 years now.

She started at the clothing shop Tots to Teens before moving on to Lasky’s Dress Shop, where she worked for 20 years.

“I did everything for them,” she said. “I was their buyer, but I kind of wanted to go into business for myself.”

So in 1993, Outlaw opened Flora’s Collections on Commerce Street.

“We’ve always been a ladies’ dress shop,” she said. “The same location, the same style. I just keep upgrading.”

Outlaw said most of her customers are 30 and up and largely middle-class working women.

“I carry a lot of careeroriented clothing, but I do fun stuff, too,” she said.

“Life would be boring if it was all work and no play.”

Flora Outlaw opened Flora’s Collections in downtown Aberdeen in 1993, but she’s been in the clothing business for more than four decades.

Flora’s Collections has everything for the “total woman,” Outlaw said, including dresses, suits, handbags, hats, coats, belts, scarves, sleepwear, pantyhose, jewelry and cologne – everything but shoes.

“When I first opened, I used to go to market, but now that I’ve been here a while and built a reputation, a lot of my reps come to me on their way to market,” she said.

Outlaw said she likes to

keep her store fresh and often she’s a step ahead of everyone else.

“Sometimes when I get stuff in my shop, the girls are afraid to try it,” she said.

“I like to be different. But most people like to see

something on somebody else before they try it.”

When the economy took a downward turn in 2008, Outlaw hit some bumps, but she never even considered shutting her doors.

“We have great customer service and that’s the best thing you can have in your shop,” she said. “If you’ve been good to your customers, they’re going to be good to you. And if you don’t love people – all people – you don’t need to be

Outlaw, the oldest of 12 children, grew up on Lenoir Plantation in Prairie, where her folks were sharecroppers.

“We would be in the field picking or chopping cotton and I would see a nice car drive by and I’d say, ‘That’s my car,’ you know, just playing a game. And when I’d see the Sears and Roebuck catalog, everything nice stuck with me. I always wanted nice stuff. And the best way to have nice stuff and be able to dress up all the time is to have a dress shop. So that’s what I did.”

Craig finds perfect fit in office role

For Dianne Craig, her role at Accent Plastic Surgery has added up beautifully.

Trained as an accountant, Craig became the office manager when her husband, Dr. Mark Craig, went into solo practice eight years ago.

“It was an optimal time to re-enter the work place,” Craig said, with their youngest entering first grade. “I was able to contribute and be there for the kids after school.”

She manages billing, collections, marketing, staffing and product lines, freeing her husband to focus on patient care. It’s a mix that works well for both of them.

“I don’t want to do what he does,” Craig said. “He doesn’t want to do what I do.”

Craig decided to pursue a career focused on numbers and organization early in life.

“I took accounting in high school and liked it,” Craig said.

After graduating and passing the CPA exam, she worked as an auditor in a large national accounting firm and then a venture capital firm in Dallas.

When she and her husband moved back to Jackson while he was in medical training, she continued to work as an accountant, but shifted to a home-based business.

“It let me have the flexibility to stay home with the kids,” Craig said.

When Dr. Craig came to Tupelo to practice, Dianne Craig shifted her focus to their three children and volunteer work. But as Shelby, Chandler and Landon grew, she was ready to step up to something more.

“It was perfect timing,” she said.

Craig keeps her hands in the day-to-day bookkeeping detail work.

“I like to post payments,” Craig said. “It keeps me in

Taylor advocates for individuals with disabilities

CORINTH – Individuals employed at Alcorn Industries in Corinth couldn’t have a better advocate than Therray Taylor.

For the 40-year-old director of the employment and pre-vocational program of North Mississippi Regional Center, working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities is like working with members of an extended family, something she has done for the past 14 years.

“This kind of work is kind of in our family’s blood,” Taylor said. “My parents have adopted or fostered about 32 kids over their life span, and my aunt ran a group home.”

Taylor is one of four natural children of her parents, but they adopted eight others, and many more have been sheltered and nurtured in their household through the years, including two teens

“Some of the kids in the house had developmental disabilities, so I grew up

with family members who have disabilities,” she said.

As she grew up and was ready to leave home, Taylor said she started college as a

pre-med student.

“I tried to run away from it, but God has His own way of making you do what He wants you to do,” she

said. “This feels right; it’s just natural.”

Taylor and her husband Fred Taylor, a mental health counselor with Region IV–Timber Hills services, have two daughters – 17-year-old Kaaliyah and Kh’ierra, 15.

Between her work at Alcorn Industries and home, where she’s a band mom for both daughters, Taylor’s schedule is a busy one.

Part of what she does on behalf of individuals at Alcorn Industries is seek employment opportunities for them in the community and urge elected officials to promote their employment as well.

“There are many kinds of jobs people with intellectual and developmental disabilities can do,” Taylor said. “They are able to earn an income and it gives them a sense of self respect that they are being productive.”

The support they receive at Alcorn Industries includes skills such as: • Pre-vocational skills –

reading, learning sight words, proper work attire, work conduct, getting along with peers, dealing with conflict, personal space issues, relationship issues.

• Vocational skills – computer use for work or entertainment, janitorial skills, small parts assembly, some large assembly work, packaging, using small household tools.

Alcorn Industries does subcontract work for Caterpillar and Corinth Coca-Cola Bottling Works, and has employees at Kroger, Gateway and one employed at Pizza Hut for more than 25 years.

“We spend a lot of time getting to know everyone, learning their likes and dislikes,” Taylor said. “We support and assist them in learning the job they want to do. We want each individual to have a voice, and we teach them that they can make decisions for themselves.” lena.mitchell@journalinc.com

“Time flew by, and all of a sudden my daughter can drive. She doesn’t need me as much anymore,” Barath said. “They knew I had no banking experience whatsoever, but they took me under their wing.”

At first, she worked just part time, about 16 hours each week, and eventually transitioned to her full-

time role as a commercial lending secretary.

“Before, my perception was that you just go to the bank, deposit your check, and leave, but there’s so much going on behind the scenes. It was cool to learn how the whole thing works,” she said.“But customers are my favorite part. You never know what kind of day someone is having, and how the smallest gesture might turn it around. And sometimes, I just get to listen.”

Unfortunately, Barath said, she doesn’t get to see her real family in the flesh too often. She last visited Durban three years ago,

Only Landon, 15, a student atTupelo High School, is still at home.

Being a medical office manager has proven to be a rewarding career in ways Craig never imagined.

“I’m able to share in the successes,” Craig said. “I know I didn’t get that working for Arthur Andersen.”

Popsy requires late nights and early mornings, Beck said.

“We’re trying to get on a schedule. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve been working until 1 in the

morning,” she said. “I got pulled over by a police officer at 2 in the morning one day. He said, ‘Why are you out this late?’ I said, ‘I’m making popsicles.’”

In addition to the cart, Popsy’s products are available at Neon Pig and Tupelo Country Club. The owners are looking to expand into Oxford, and there’s the possibility of opening a storefront in Tupelo.

They also have some

“We would love to do some fall flavors, like pumpkin spice or caramel spice,” Beck said.

And no matter how it sounds, the Popsy team remains committed to buttermilk.
