“It’s about big, bold patterns, and lots of different patterns together,” said Silly Simpson’s owner Deanna Russell.

If there’s an image on the

outfit, it could range in anything from hearts and hashtags for bigger girls to cute foxes or owls for little girls.

Vests are making a comeback for both little girls and boys.

Woodland creatures are stylish for boys this fall, too.

“It’s all about elephants, foxes, elk,” Hart said. “Any outdoor scenes and camo.”

Tribal prints are also popular in Reed’s Tea Collection,

and Northface jackets and pullovers are must-haves, too.

Traditional fall colors for boys – browns, oranges, blues and greens – are always in style, and plaid is a staple, Russell said.

TUPELO – Sometimes an outfit just needs a little zing.

That’s where accessories come in.

From shoes and purses to headbands and earrings, little touches can turn boring into fabulous in an instant.

Joy Whittle of Southern Roots boutique likes the look of a lace vest.

“You can use it to dress up something that’s plain,” she said. “It just changes an outfit. You can wear it over any solid long top or dress.”

At Sparrows on Main, Tina Franks is all about texture on her accessories.

“We have leather bags with chains and ankle boots made of leather” Franks said. “Chains and leather are really popular this fall.”

Peep-toe wedges are all the rage at The Snooty Owl. “We’ve already sold out and had to re-order,” said Amber Mooneyham. “They’re surprisingly comfortable and good transition shoes because you can wear them through the fall into winter. Peep-toe is huge right now.”

And how can you talk about accessories without mentioning jewelry?

“We’re seeing a big trend in jewelry this year,” said Juli Palmer of Corner Shoe Store. “Jewelry can take an outfit from plain to elegant. It’s easy to go from daywear to eveningwear just by using jewelry as an accessory.”

Fall’s fashions invite you closer

Cozy, charming are two descriptions for the fall look for women

This season, there’s plenty to fall in love with.

Cozy classics that feel as good as they look, charming dresses that cover the spectrum of fashion, and textures that add dimension are all part of the package.

“This is definitely a season to invest in,” said Dale Simmons of Reed’s Department Store.

Traditional fall colors – rusty reds, mustard, orange and mocha – are out in force. They are backed up by beautiful grays, camels and ivories. Black and white patterns, along with rich jewel tones like cobalts, purples and magentas.

The sweater is a fall staple, but they are out in force this season with a host of lightweight layering pieces. Women can chose from lacy, light boleros to robe-style jackets and capes.

“The emphasis is on cozy,” in both casual and dressy looks, said Krista Blanchard of Reed’s Department Store.

But touchable knit fabrics aren’t stopping with sweaters. They’ve taken over the dress, shirt and pants aisle, too.

There’s a great versatility in the fall knits. Many are lightweight, which makes them friendly for the Southern climate and great for layering with different shirts and jackets.

“You can make everything different every time you wear it,” said Brody Holland of the Main At-

Dresses from casual to fabulously dressy have staged their biggest comeback in years.

“This is definitely the year to add a dress to your wardrobe,” Simmons said.

The styles range from simple to fabulous, embellished with lace, tex-

ture, crystals and sequins.

“I see a lot of vintageinspired pieces,” Holland said, like dresses you could imagine Audrey Hepburn wearing. “It’s classy, yet comfortable.”

But the season is anything but dowdy. Along with the classics, there is a playful edge to the season.

“They’re marrying different prints and different materials in one dress,” said Tina Franks, coowner of Sparrows on Main. “I love the mixed patterns.”

The season is rich with textures. Designers have used a host of techniques to elevate the classic into something new.

Lace is adding romance across the board. Leather continues to add a hint of the wild side.

“Fringe is everywhere,” Franks said.

But it doesn’t stop there. Embellishments with buttons and sequins are showing up on tops, dresses and pants. Embroidery is bringing art

into the fabric of clothes.

Shearling is popping up on vests, sweaters and even purses.

“Shearling is huge,” Blanchard said. “This season, they’ve kind of spiffed up for a look that’s both dress and casual.” michaela.morris@journalinc.com

Fall fashion about function, versatility

“All our fabrics come from Italy, England, Scotland, and Ireland,” Long said. “One thing that’s getting bigger is designer socks with kind of wild colors and patterns.”

Long also said to check out the women’s line from True Grit, called Dylan.

The brand has become a favorite in recent years with its distinct flavor of casual luxury.

The outdoors continues to influence trends in men’s fashion, especially as the camping weather of fall draws near.

In the months to come, expect autumn staples like flannels paired with other pieces that fit in equally well at church as a hiking trip.

“A lot of outdoor companies are catering to people who want the rugged, comfortable look of outdoor, but don’t want something synthetic,” said Claude Clayton, men’s buyer and manager at the Barnes Crossing location of Reed’s. “They’re definitely striking a middle ground between technical outdoor gear casual dress.”

For ladies, Clayton predicts Woolrich flannels to be a huge seller. Already, he said, Reed’s has seen a huge demand for the classic brand in a “boyfriend cut,” a roomier size usually worn with tight jeans or leggings.

In addition, the Kuhl brand that Reed’s began carrying just a few years ago, continues to provide rock climbing pants with class.

“These pants fit really well and are definitely durable. They’re clean enough to wear to church or a social event or even work, but also aren’t afraid to get dirty,” Clayton said.

“They’re a little more expensive but give a lot more value because they are so versatile.”
