Wedding invitations are often a great source of information for guests. While wedding websites also provide a great opportunity for couples to get the word out about their weddings and share pertinent details like the date and location of the wedding, many people are still unfamiliar with the concept of a wedding website, and therefore they rely on invitations as their primary source of information about a wedding.

One of the most important bits of information couples must include on their wedding invitations is the RSVP date. The RSVP, which stands for "repondez s'il vous plait", is a couple's request for a response

Newlyweds often have a lot on their plates upon returning from their honeymoons. One of the more critical issues newly married couples must address is their finances and how those finances will be combined going forward.

Combining finances can be a touchy subject for many couples, especially those who had not given much thought to their finances prior to tying the knot. But there are steps couples can take to make the process of merging finances go more smoothly.

• Discuss finances early and often.

Allowing finances to be the elephant in the room is a mistake, as couples do not want to begin their lives together treading lightly around an issue as significant as finances. Couples should discuss their expenditures and spending habits as early as possible, as one of the biggest hurdles newly married couples must clear is coming to grips with one another's financial habits. If such habits have already been

discussed, then developing a financial plan will be much easier once that time comes.

When discussing finances, define both short-term and longterm goals and how each of you can adjust your spending habits to make those goals come true.

• Pay off any debts.

The cost of weddings has skyrocketed over the last several decades, and many newlyweds find themselves in a considerable amount of debt upon returning from their honeymoons. When merging finances, couples should prioritize paying down such debt, as debt is a significant source of stress for newly-

weds and long-married couples alike.

Certain traditions, such as fathers walking their daughters down the aisle and grooms sharing a dance with their mothers at the reception, are moments to cherish. Though such traditions have withstood the test of time, couples still have some opportunities to embrace relatively recent traditions.

One such recent tradition is the savethe-date card, a precursor to wedding invitations that simply lets guests know when the wedding is so they can clear their calendars and be there on a couple's big day. While save-the-date cards are best kept simple, there are a few rules couples should follow before sending their cards out to loved ones.

But there are now many modern twists, both in design and in ways brides choose to wear pearls.

Modern brides often personalize their pearls by wearing bolder, longer styles, by mixing and layering different millimeters and by twisting, tying or knotting them. The variations are endless with a

Plus-sized brides may need a few extras. A dress is unlikely to meet all of your needs right off the rack, so find a good seamstress who can alter your dress to meet your needs. Sleeves can be put on, dresses can be

shortened, support can be added, and many customizations can be done to a gown postproduction.

• Find a flattering shape. Choose a gown with a full-skirt or an A-line skirt with an empire or a droppedwaist seam that will elongate your midriff and flow away from your hips. Curvier brides typically avoid strapless gowns, as such dresses have a tendency to make a woman's shoulders and arms look wider.

• Don't get stuck on size. Sizes vary widely depending on the manufacturer.

Being chosen as a best man or a maid of honor is a significant and meaningful honor.

Those roles have evolved over the years, but these special participants must still perform some of the traditional duties of the past, including serving as the official witnesses to the ceremony. The following is a rundown of the various duties maids of honor and best men are now expected to handle once they're chosen for these distinguished honors.

PRIOR TO THE WEDDING Before the wedding takes place, the maid of honor will closely assist

the bride-to-be with many of the important decisions related to the look and the feel of the wedding.

She typically accompanies the bride to dress shops to select gowns for the bride and bridesmaids. Much in the same manner, the best man will assist the groom-to-be with choosing tuxedoes or suits and also with coordinating with the ushers to ensure they know when to go for fittings.

Although the best man will serve as a sounding board for the groom, traditionally the

WEDDING DAY On the day of the wedding, the maid of honor and the best man will act as a support system for the bride and groom. The maid of honor will help the bride get dressed and help iron out any mini-emergencies that

should crop up. The best man will help ensure all of the ushers are dressed and get the groom to the wedding on time.

During the ceremony, the maid of honor will hold the bride's bouquet while she participates in the wedding. The best man will keep the rings safe until they are needed.

The maid of honor also will help adjust the bride's train and veil as she sits and stands during the ceremony. Both will sign the marriage certificate as witnesses.

At the reception, the best man is expected to give a toast and the maid of honor may share some words as well. She also may accompany the bride to the restroom and assist her with managing the gown.

AFTER THE WEDDING The best man will be in charge of returning the tuxedoes to the rental shop, if necessary. He also may drive the newly married couple to the airport so they can depart on their honeymoon.

The maid of honor will assist the bride in changing out of her gown and into her travel clothes.

Oftentimes the maid of honor takes the gown to the cleaners in the days following the ceremony so the dress can be preserved.

9 - 12 MONTHS BEFORE WEDDING Choose your wedding date. If you plan to be married in a church, temple or mosque or in a religious service at home, clear the date and time with your clergy.

Announce your engagement in local newspaper.

Set your budget. Take time for a heart-to-heart talk with your fiancé about the budget and style of your wedding, reception and wedding-related parties, and who pays for what.

Enlist help. Consider hiring a bridal consultant. If your budget won’t stretch that far, ask relatives and close friends to assist you in specific tasks – selecting a dress, interviewing caterers, locating a reception site – especially in areas where you feel you need support.

Compose a guest list. Let out-of-town guests know your wedding is in the works so they can make travel plans.

Reserve your reception site.

Choose your attendants.

Select your wedding gown, shoes and accessories.

Decide on your bridesmaids’ dresses.

Determine the theme or mood you’d like to establish with the food, table settings, flowers and entertainment.

Interview caterers, musicians, florists, photographers, videographers and bakers. Get written estimates of their costs.

6 MONTHS BEFORE WEDDING Choose your caterer. Remember to get a written contract.

Book your photographer and or videographer.

Shop for wedding rings.

Decide on your honeymoon destination. Work with a travel agent to book your travel and accommodations.

4 MONTHS BEFORE WEDDING Register for gifts at one or more bridal-gift registries. Help both mothers to coordinate and shop for their weddingday attire.

Select music for your ceremony and reception.

Choose readings for your wedding and write your wedding vows.

Plan a rehearsal dinner for members of your wedding party, your family and out-of-town guests. Reserve the location.

1 MONTH BEFORE WEDDING Get your wedding license.

Arrange hotel accommodations for members of the wedding party who live out of town. Reserve a block of rooms for other out-of-town guests, and let them know the rooms are available. Remember to ask for any group discounts or special packages.

Have a final fitting of your gown and make sure your attendants have theirs.

Reserve your wedding-day transportation and any other wedding-day rental needs.

Purchase a special book to keep track of wedding gifts as they arrive.

Make appointments for gown fittings.

Write those thank-you notes on a daily basis.

Check the requirements for a marriage license.

If you plan a formal dinner for your reception, it’s time to draw up a seating plan and make up place cards.

Make sure contracts and arrangements are complete with all of your service providers.

3 MONTHS BEFORE WEDDING Carefully prepare directions, including simply drawn maps, if necessary, to help guide guests to the wedding and reception, and to hotels. For guests who will travel a long distance to your wedding, consider assembling an information package on fun things to do and see in your area.

Check that your menu selections and service plans are locked in place with the caterer.

Check with your florist to confirm dates and time of flower deliveries.

Review your wedding-day transportation plans and make sure drivers are clear about addresses, times and number of passengers.

Make name or address changes official on documents, including driver’s license, Social Security forms and financial accounts.

Begin addressing invitations and announcements. Select a special stamp at the post office. Invitations should go in the mail six to eight weeks before your big day.

Meet with your photographer to specify the formal shots you want taken of the bridal party, as well as specific, candid shots you’d like taken during the reception.

Give the caterer or other food suppliers a close idea of the number of guests you expect.

Review the video plans with your videographer.

Make sure all reservations are in place for honeymoon travel. If you’re traveling overseas, check again that your passports are current and that you have any necessary visas.

Check with bridesmaids to make sure they have their gowns and are getting them adjusted.

Make a date with your photographer for any formal portraits you desire.

Wrap gifts for bridal attendants and have them ready for the rehearsal dinner.

Purchase travelers’ checks and reconfirm honeymoon travel and hotel plans.

See that checks are written and ready to be handed out to vendors at the agreed- upon time.

Inform your caterer of the final number of guests.

Confirm that out-of-town guests are set with hotel accommodations, transportation and wedding-day directions.

1 DAY BEFORE WEDDING

Finalize the music that will be played during your wedding ceremony.

Take time to relax and enjoy a massage, manicure and pedicure.

Meet with musicians who will provide entertainment during your reception and orchestrate precisely what you want and when you want it played. Don’t be shy to voice your preferences, down to the volume, favorite songs you’d like to hear or even songs you don’t want played.

Traditionally, this is the day for your rehearsal ceremony and rehearsal dinner.

THE WEDDING DAY

Plan your rehearsal dinner and a brunch or fun activity for out-of-town guests to enjoy on the day following your wedding.

Allow time for dressing, makeup and hair styling.

Make appointments for a hairdresser, makeup artist and manicurist.

If you plan on photography before the ceremony allow ample time so you’re not rushed.

Gather necessary birth or baptismal certificates you may need for your wedding license.

Relax, and remember: This is your special day, the result of all your careful planning. Now it’s time to enjoy. Refuse to let any glitch get to you. Savor every moment of this sacred day.

Wedding advice: Be open to ideas and expertise

TIP #1: TRUST YOUR VENDORS Couples often have unique ideas for their wedding day. It may seem tempting to spell out what you want in minute detail and insist on wedding vendors carrying out your wishes to a T. But the smarter idea may be to give vendors a little more free reign - after all, they are the professionals.

When deciding on particular aspects of the wedding, you can give your general ideas, but leave the finished product to the professionals.

Don't list every song you want the deejay to play or micromanage all of the poses the photographer should take. After all, experienced pros have likely done this dozens of times in the past and could pro-

duce results you never dreamed possible.

TIP #2: SCALE DOWN Unless you are planning on auditioning for the show "Over-theTop Weddings," it might pay to make your wedding more about being personal and less about wowing the crowd with special effects and expensive treats. It's easy to be lured into extra dinner courses or be persuaded to release doves at the ceremony, but will these extras impact your relationship or the life you will be building together?

TIP #3: DON'T OVEREXTEND Your wedding will hopefully be a once-ina-lifetime event.
