Smoothies help you get a healthy start to your day TUPELO – You hear the recommendations every time you go to the doctor or pick up a health magazine: Try to eat five to nine servings every day of fresh fruit and vegetables.

But sometimes, that just seems impossible.

Enter the smoothie.

These portable vitamin- and nutrient-filled drinks can take less than five minutes to put together for breakfast in the morning, when you’re trying to get out the door for school or work.

And summer is the perfect time to enjoy smoothies, when fruits like berries and melons are at their peak of freshness.

Whether you want to add lowfat yogurt to your smoothie for a creamier drink or leafy greens for more vitamins or ice cubes for a slushy mix, you can’t go wrong

with these recipes.

Strawberry Smoothie 10 strawberries, hulled 1 medium banana 1 ⁄2 cup skim milk 1 ⁄2 cup vanilla yogurt 1 tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 6 ice cubes, crushed In a blender, combine strawberries, banana, milk, yogurt, sugar and vanilla.

Toss in the ice. Blend until smooth and creamy.

Serves 2.

Green Smoothie 1 banana, frozen and peeled 1 apple, peeled, cored and chopped 1 pear, peeled, cored and chopped 2 stalks celery, chopped 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

2 cups Romaine lettuce, chopped 2 cups baby spinach, chopped Place banana, apple, pear, celery and lemon juice in a blender and pulse several times. Add greens and blend on high until smooth and creamy. Serve immediately.

Serves 3.

Pineapple Smoothie 4 ice cubes 1 ⁄4 fresh pineapple, peeled, cored and cubed* 1 large banana, cut into chunks 1 cup pineapple or apple juice Place ice cubes, pineapple, banana, and pineapple juice into the bowl of a blender. Puree on high until smooth.

Serves 2. * You can use 1 (20-ounce) can pineapple chunks in juice, and then add additional pineapple or apple juice to equal 1 cup.

Berry Smoothie ⁄4 cup blueberries ⁄4 cup raspberries 1 peach, halved and pitted 1 ⁄2 cup orange juice 3 ⁄4 cup plain low-fat yogurt 2 teaspoons honey Place all ingredients in a blender and blend for 1 minute.

Serve immediately.

Serves 2.

Creamy Mango Smoothie 2 mangoes, seed removed, peeled and chopped 2 cups mango sorbet 2 (6-ounce) containers fat-free French vanilla yogurt 11⁄2 cups skim or soy milk Place all ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until smooth.

Healthy smiles are about more than pearly whites.

The Northeast Mississippi Health Journal asked Tupelo dentist Dr. Barry Thornton and Saltillo dentist Dr. Cooper Ogg for the inside line on what dentists really wish their pa- Ogg tients knew.

Dentists really mean it when they say they want you to floss every day.

“I kid all my patients, ‘Only floss the teeth you want to keep,’” Thornton said.

Why so important? Even if you do the best possible job brushing your teeth, you are still missing a lot of tooth surface. The germs that get left behind can cause gum disease. If you notice bleeding when you brush or floss, you’ve got gum disease. Talk to your dentist and start flossing.

The string is best, but those little flossing brushes and picks help, too.

“We know that anything is better than nothing,” Ogg said.“Waterpiks are helpful when appliances like orthodontics are present.”

Losing your teeth is not an inevitable part of aging.

“I have people say to me all the time, ‘What does it matter? They’re going to fall out anyway,’”Thornton said.“That couldn’t

be any further from the truth.”

With fluoridated water and the available treatments at the dentist office, there is no reason to lose your teeth.

If you’re anxious about dental care, share your concerns.

“Tell the staff and dentist ahead of time,” Thornton said.

Thornton “There are really good anti-anxiety methods available to calm even the most fearful patient.

Only one third of Americans visited a dentist last year; fear is one of the biggest reasons along with financial concerns and perceived lack of time. All of those issues can be addressed, Thornton said.

Be a smart consumer.

Learn about dental health from reputable sources so you don’t get taken in by fads.

“Talk with a dental professional,” Ogg said. “Do not rely solely on the Internet or TV for information.”

Your dental health affects the rest of your body.

Gum disease is also linked to other other diseases, not just tooth decay, Thornton said.

“We all are busy, busy, busy, but the bottom line is your teeth and gums are an important part of your overall health,” Thornton said. ”If you don’t take care of them, you will regret it later.”

Freezing out fat

Cryolipolysis offers nonsurgical solution for love handles, muffin top

Fat can be a stubborn adversary.

Love handles, muffin top, a poochy tummy and pockets of back fat can resist even the most vigorous exercise and diet programs.

Cryolipolysis offers a non-surgical avenue to freeze away that stubborn fat.

“We’ve had very high satisfaction,” said Dr. Mark Craig, who offers the Cool Sculpting system in his office.

The process takes advantage of a weakness of fat cells.

“Fat cells are injured at a higher temperature than the skin,” Craig said.

The Cool Sculpting machine uses suction to pull the skin into contact with

cooling plates that drop the temperature to 40 degrees.

“It physically kills the fat cells,” Craig said.

Over 30 to 90 days, the body gets rid of the fat cells and there’s a 20 to 30 percent reduction Craig in fat.

around the bra line.

“It responds so well,” Craig said.

For the moment, liposuction remains the choice for removing fat deposits from the legs. The shape and structure of the thighs makes it difficult for the Cool Sculpting machine to pull the skin into the applicator to cool the fat cells.

The procedure works best on people who are within their ideal body weight range or close to it. The results are less than ideal for people with a lot of loose skin in the treated area, because the procedure doesn’t cause the skin to contract, Craig said.

Because the procedure affects only the fat just below the skin and not the visceral fat that can build up around the organs, it

doesn’t improve your health.

For people with loose skin in the abdomen, a tummy tuck usually delivers the best results, Craig said. However, he has used Cool Sculpting to help those patients get some reduction because they weren’t good candidates for surgery or they couldn’t accommodate the four to six weeks of down time required after a tummy tuck.

Usually cryolipolysis runs about $1,400 per area that’s treated. It typically offered in the offices of plastic surgeons, dermatologists and medispas.

Craig recommends patients considering the procedure consult with a plastic surgeon because they can offer the widest range of options to achieve the patient’s goals.

Limiting screen time takes effort, but pays dividends for families

Coming unglued from screen time can be a tall order for kids and parents.

The options for screen time have multiplied in the past decade. The tablets, smart phones, iPods that have joined TV and video games are hard to ignore.

Video games can’t replicate the face-to-face interactions with parents, siblings and peers and handson problem solving skills. It’s an important life skill to learn how to balance leisure time with devices and the other things, Tucker said.

“Unplugging increases interpersonal skills,” Tucker said.

Parents who didn’t grow up

in such a technologically rich world are having to play catch up.

“We didn’t grow up this way,” Tucker said.

In their battle to hold the line against too much screen time, the Hodges family of Tupelo finds it helps to keep their three kids,Will, 11, Mary, 8, and Sam, 3, going with an active schedule of sports, music and dance in addition to setting boundaries for video games and screen time.

Sometimes it’s hard, but once the screens are off, the kids start looking for other things to do, Kim Hodges said.

“When it was time to turn the TV off, I found Mary and Will

preciate that they keep kids happily occupied and quiet without making a mess. And there are plenty of quality TV shows, games and apps that encourage learning and creativity.

Screen time doesn’t have to be evil, but there are good reasons to limit it. The American Academy of Pediatricians recommends that kids 2 and older have no more than two hours of screen time daily.

Most screen time is sedentary, which contributes to the dramatic increase in obesity in children.

Kids who are overweight and obese are at risk for health problems now and in the future.

But it’s more than just the physical, said Kathy Tucker, the director at HealthWorks!

Kids need 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Limiting screen time makes room for fun, active play.

• Give kids active toys like balls, kites, and jump ropes.

• Encourage children to join a sports team or try a new physical activity.

• Keep the TV out of a child’s bedroom.

• Walk around the block after a meal.

• Make a new house rule: no sitting still during television commercials.

• Turn on some music and dance in the living room.

• Find time to spend together doing a fun activity: family park day, swim day or bike day.

Efforts to reduce screen time don’t have to be elaborate.

“It’s mostly common sense,” Tucker said.

Here are some tips to get kids moving: • Parents have to lead by example and manage their own screen time and create opportunities for family time. That can mean turning the phone and tablet off to give kids undivided attention.

“If we don’t do that, they won’t either,” Tucker said.

• Make screen time more active.

Wii and Xbox games combine the best of both worlds.

• Give older kids room to manage their device time within boundaries. They need to learn to make choices about what they want to do with their screen time.

Younger kids will need more structure and suggestions.

“This is teaching a life skill,” Tucker said.

• Pull out the board games.

They are cheaper than many video games and can give family conversations a focus.

• Let go of perfect. Two hours or less of screen time a day is the target, but going cold turkey can add conflict instead of enjoyment.

• Go out for a walk as a family.

Throw a ball or a Frisbee around.

“It’s really simple. You don’t want to overthink it,” Tucker said.

Just as expired, unused medications need to be disposed of in a way that no one else can use them, pill bottles also need proper care. Before chunking, make sure any personal identifying information has been removed.

Old, unused medications need to be disposed of carefully

TUPELO – Like closets and refrigerators, medicine cabinets need regular cleanouts, too.

Medications don’t last forever.

Whether prescription or over-thecounter, there’s a time they need to go. Most drugs are good more than a year after they are dispensed.

All prescription and over-thecounter medications are labeled with expiration dates. After that point, the medicines may not function as expected, said Kristie Gholston, director of the North Mississippi Medical Center pharmacy.

“Some medications get stronger and some medications get weaker,” Gholston said.

Beyond outliving their efficacy, it’s not good for your health to let old medications hang around.

There might be a temptation to self-diagnose and take leftover antibiotics. But you may not be treating the right bacteria.

“Not all antibiotics are the same,” Gholston said.

Misusing antibiotics also con-

tributes to antibiotic resistance.

That means an antibiotic may not work as well when you need it to.

A person’s medical profile can change, too, Gholston said. If you’ve developed high blood pressure, the cough and cold medicine that was fine two years ago may no longer be a good idea.

An old medication may have a bad interaction with a new prescription.

Some guidelines for medications like acetaminophen have been updated; the maximum daily dose has been decreased because of the risk of liver damage.

CLEANING UP

Medications – prescription and over the counter – need to be disposed of with care to minimize impact on the environment and the chance for misuse.

“They used to say to flush them,” Gholston said, but that is no longer encouraged out of concern for introducing chemicals into the water supply.

For non-narcotics, expired pills and liquids should be mixed into kitty litter or coffee grounds in a plastic container to render them

• Store out of reach of children. They can probably get the caps off faster than you can.

• Bathrooms are less than ideal because of moisture.

• Needles and sharps should be disposed of using proper containers – thick-walled, sturdy plastic containers. A list of local household sharps collection stations is available at deq.state.ms.us. unusable. They should be sealed in the container, and then they can be safely thrown in the trash.

Identifying information should be removed from pill bottles before they are thrown away.

Because of the risk of misuse, narcotic medicine and other controlled substances shouldn’t be disposed of in household trash.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration hosts annual drug take-back days in coordination with local and state agencies where all kinds of unused medications can be turned in for disposal.

Between take-back days, the

Lee County Sheriff’s Department and most other sheriff’s departments are able to accept medications that families need to dispose of with a special emphasis on handling controlled substances.

“We realize that things happen, such as death, sickness or change in medications, and that people find themselves needing to get rid of some medications,” said Lt. Sheri Hall of the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, which accepts medications for disposal during regular business hours. They cannot accept sharps or other hazardous items.

Cycling offers fun, efficient workout

or people who want to mix fun and exercise, it’s hard to beat cycling.

Two wheels and the open air offer a time machine of sorts.

“It’s going back to being a kid,” said Jeremy Maxey, owner of The Trail Bicycle Company in Pontotoc.

Biking can deliver a powerful cardiovascular workout without the wear and tear that running can deliver to the knees. But cycling works more than just the legs and lungs. Because of the balance it requires, it also challenges the core muscles in the torso, said Maxey, a certified personal trainer who has been biking seriously for about 15 years.

Getting fit was part of the initial motivation for Jeff Snyder when he started biking about five years ago.

The first time out on a mountain bike trail was challenging.

“Half way through the 9-mile ride, we had to call for water,” Snyder said.

But they had so much fun, they decided to go out again the next week.

But cycling enthusiasts say

The Snyders of Saltillo – Alonna, 8, and parents Jeff and Carey – enjoy biking as a family.

The Music Bend trail near Veterans Park is one of their favorite spots. Jeff and Carey Snyder also make time for longer, faster rides with friends and with the Birmingham Ridge Riders group.

Cover story there’s a benefit for the brain, too.

“I love being outside and feeling the wind,” said Carey Snyder, who takes mountain bike and road bike rides with husband Jeff and a group of friends along with shorter family rides with daughter Alonna, 8. “It definitely helps you stay strong mentally,” she said.

GETTING RESTARTED

Once you learn, it’s true you never forget how to ride a bike.

But muscles and lungs do need time to get reaccustomed to providing pedal power.

“Don’t overdo it,” said Jeff Buse of the Brewer community, who is a USA Cycling licensed coach. “Focus on enjoying it.”

If your bike has been collecting dust, the first stop needs to be the bike shop for a tune up, Maxey said. If you don’t have a helmet, pick one up and use it every time.

“If you don’t think it’s important, try dropping a cantaloupe from bike height,” Maxey said.

Although some soreness is part of acclimating to the bike, it’s important to make sure the bike fits you properly.

“If you have an uncomfortable bike, you’re not going to

enjoy it,” Carey Snyder said.

Like any exercise program, it’s important to start slowly.

“Start with one mile a day and then build up,” Maxey said.

People who have built up their lungs and legs during spin class also need to give themselves space to transition to a real bike.

“It’s two different things,” Maxey said, because the seats and the balancing are different.

As beginners work up to longer rides, they should continue to pace themselves.

“You have to have the energy to get back,” Maxey said. “Don’t wait until you’re tired to turn around.”

Padded bike shorts are highly recommended for all riders, Maxey said. Sometimes it takes some experimenting to find the right seat that is comfortable for you, especially on a road bike. Online bike forums are great places to find used seats.

Lots of folks bike every day, but it’s important to vary the intensity and duration of rides to avoid overtaxing muscles.

If your arms and shoulders are hurting after a road bike or cruiser ride, you’re probably putting too much weight on your arms, Maxey said. Sit back and

put more weight on your seat.

During July and August, it’s important to avoid the heat of the day and make arrangements for extra water.

WHERE TO GO

Buse, who does much of his biking on the back roads of southern Lee County, recommends that riders find quiet, wide roads so that cars have plenty of room to pass cyclists.

Many riders like Magnolia Way – sometimes called the Toyota Highway – which runs from Highway 9 to the plant in Blue Springs.

“The only significant traffic is at shift change,” Buse said.

With kids, plan shorter, slower rides as a family. The Snyders have seen their daughter’s interest in cycling grow especially since she got a new bike. The family often goes out for shorter rides with her around the neighborhood or at parks likeVeterans Park in Tupelo.

• MOUNTAIN BIKING: Trails are available at Trace State Park between Tupelo and Pontotoc, Taylor Trails adjacent to University of Mississippi campus in Oxford, the Clear Creek Trail on Sardis Lake and the TVA Trails in Florence, Alabama. Elvis Presley Lake also has a trail, but the park is currently closed as tornado damage is cleaned up.

• BACK ROADS around North Mississippi offer great riding loops. Look for low traffic roads with wide shoulders and good visibility.

• Because of heavy traffic and the narrow road, MOST LOCAL CYCLISTS RECOMMEND AVOIDING BIKING ON THE NATCHEZ TRACE PARKWAY through Tupelo.

Rules of the Road • Follow the law: Bicyclists have the same rules and duties as drivers. Obey traffic signals and stop signs. Ride with traffic; use the rightmost lane in the direction you are headed. In Mississippi and 21 other states, motorists are required by law to give cyclists at least three feet of space when passing.

• Be Predictable: Make your intentions clear to everyone on the road. Ride in a straight line and don’t swerve between parked cars.

Signal turns, and check behind you well before turning or changing lanes.

• Be Conspicuous: Ride where people can see you and wear bright clothing. Use a front white light, red rear light and reflectors when visibility is poor. Make eye contact with others and don’t ride on sidewalks.

• Think Ahead: Anticipate what drivers, pedestrians, and other people on bikes will do next.Watch for turning vehicles and ride outside the door zone of parked cars.

Look out for debris, potholes, and other road hazards. Cross railroad tracks at right angles.

• Ride Ready: Check that your tires have sufficient air, brakes are working, chain runs smoothly, and quick release levers are closed. Carry tools and supplies that are appropriate for your ride such as water, a snack, cell phone and tools to fix a flat tire. Wear a helmet.

Mountain bikes have heavy duty frames with front shocks to handle the ups and downs of tough, off-road trails. Prevention, awareness key to combating West Nile Virus

By Michaela Gibson Morris | Daily Journal Like ants at a picnic, mosquitoes are on the move as the temperature rises.

More than a nuisance, they come bearing the potentially lifethreatening West Nile Virus.

The mosquito-borne illness can occur at any time of year in Mississippi, but most cases are reported during the summer months, typically peaking in August. The presence of the virus has been documented across the state, but has historically hit more urban counties the hardest.

“It’s pretty much here to stay,” said Dr. Thomas Dobbs, Mississippi State epidemiologist.

Most people infected by West Nile have no symptoms, but about 1 percent of people will develop the neuro-invasive form of the disease.

All Mississippians should take measures around their homes and businesses to reduce their risk of contracting the disease.

“We want to prevent as many cases as possible,” Dobbs said.

Here’s how:

CLEAN IT UP

Cutting down on breeding habitat – standing water – is key to reducing the mosquito population.

• Clear out trash. The Southern house mosquito can breed in anything that can hold the smallest amounts of water.

• Flush outdoor pet water bowls and bird baths every 2-3 days.

• Drain standing water from flower pot saucers, clogged gutters.

• Clean and chlorinate pools.

• Treat ornamental ponds without fish with larvicides.

• Search out anything that holds water; dump or flush weekly.

PERSONAL PROTECTION

• Limit activities outside at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

• Wear long sleeves and

long pants if possible.

• Use a repellent. Be sure to read package directions about how frequently it needs to be reapplied and if it’s appropriate for children.

SYMPTOMS

Most people who develop symptoms after West Nile Virus will experience only a slight fever and mild headache. But it becomes a medical emergency for the small group of people who develop the severe forms of the disease: meningitis, an infection of the spinal cord; encephalitis – an infection of the brain; or flaccid paralysis. People over 50 are at highest risk of contracting West Nile Virus.

Rapid onset of these symptoms should prompt immediate medical attention: • Rapid onset of high fever • Head and body aches • Confusion • Neck stiffness

Breaking the code hidden in your blood

Lab work helps your health care provider get a picture of what’s happening inside your body. The results tell only part of the story and have to be interpreted in conjunction with a person’s medical history and symptoms.

Neutrophils accomplish this by eating these substances. Approximately 50% to 70% of white blood cells are neutrophils. An increased number may indicate a bacterial infection.

The Complete Blood Count, CBC for short, is one of the most commonly used blood tests. It can give your doctor or nurse practitioner a lot of information. Blood has four main parts: red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout the body; white blood cells, which fight off infections; platelets, which seal up leaks; and plasma, the fluid they all travel in. Their levels remain consistent unless there’s a problem.

Eosinophils also create an inflammatory response. Inflammation is both good and bad. It helps isolate and control the immune response at the site of an infection, but it also damages the tissue around it. Allergies are immune responses that often involve chronic inflammation. Eosinophils play a significant role in the inflammation related to allergies and asthma.

Lymphocytes help fight off diseases. An increased number may indicate a viral infection. In adults lymphocytes make up roughly 20 to 40 percent of the total number of white blood cells. They are found in the circulation and also are concentrated in central lymphoid organs and tissues, such as the spleen, tonsils, and lymph nodes, where the initial immune response is likely to occur.

The hematocrit is the proportion, by volume, of the blood that consists of red blood cells. The normal ranges for hemocrit depend on the age and, after adolescence, the sex of the individual. A low hematocrit number could indicate anemia, which can cause fatigue, weakness; a high number can indicate polycythemia, which in extreme cases can interfere with blood flow in small veins and arteries.

Hemoglobin is the protein molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and takes carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs. The normal ranges for hemoglobin depend on the age and, beginning in adolescence, the gender of the person.

Facing Infertility

eciding to start a family is one of the most exciting times a couple will experience – there’s so much hope and possibility for the future.

But that excitement can quickly turn to frustration and stress when the months begin to tick by without getting pregnant.

In the United States, 10 to 15 percent of all couples will face infertility issues, and many will be diagnosed with a reproductive disorder. That means you or someone you know will most likely experience some type of infertility. It can be a heartbreaking journey, but thankfully many factors that lead to infertility can be addressed and treated with current therapies available.

What is infertility?

Infertility is generally defined as one year of not being able to conceive and not using any type of protection. If you’re under age 35, doctors advise that you try getting pregnant for about a year before seeking help. Women age 35 and older should see their doctor after six months of trying to conceive

Is infertility mostly a female problem?

Male infertility isn’t something you hear much about in the news, so it may be surprising to learn just how common it is. About one-third of infertility is thought to be male derived. The good news is that even for men with very low sperm counts, the ultimate success rates of achieving pregnancy are extremely high with infertility treatments such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization.

What happens when you see your doctor about infertility?

Your regular gynecologist may do some basic testing, or for more thorough fertility testing you may be referred to a reproductive endocrinology and infertility doctor,

Be aware of your child’s developmental milestones

D

evelopmental milestones are the gauge by which a child’s maturation is monitored. Milestones are skills which are performed at certain age ranges as a child grows.

Parents, caregivers, doctors and other health care professionals closely monitor when a child achieves or fails to achieve a developmental milestone.

Hearing a child say his or her first word can be the source of much anticipated excitement, but it can also be a source of worry if not performed in a timely manner. Many guides are available on typical achievement of developmental milestones.

Here are some general guidelines: At one month of age, most children can hold a tight hand grasp, turn their head to the side when on their stomach, and their eyes can follow to midline (the middle of the body). He should begin to utter “oohs” and “aahs” and follow objects briefly with his eyes. In some advanced cases, the child may be able to hold his head at a 45-degree angle while on his stomach, smile and laugh.

At six months of age, most children can transfer objects from hand to hand, release objects and reach with their arms.

Most should begin to eat solid food (stage 1 baby food) and mouth objects. Some children at this age will be able to combine syllables and shift their weight from side to side (getting ready to start crawling).

At 12 months, most children can turn pages in a book; reach for, pick up and give back objects; begin walking alone; sit down from standing and gesture to indicate wants. Many children at this age will take a few steps and say one word besides “mama” or “dada.” Some children will be able to walk alone, say two words or scribble with a crayon.

Between 16 to 19 months, children should be able to jump in place, run with poor coordination and use six words regularly.

in this age group include recognizing when something is wrong, dancing to music and sorting toys by color, shape or size. Some children may be able to wash and dry their own hands and recognize when they need to use the bathroom.

Meeting a developmental milestone in a timely manner is significant, but the quality by which the skill is completed is also important. For instance, a child may be walking but the quality might be fair or poor due to a clumsy appearance. If the child is just beginning to walk, this is not a concern; however, if the child has been walking for longer than six months, he may need to be assessed to determine if there is an underlying problem. Another important factor in development is the sequence in which milestones occur. In other words, “you must crawl before you walk.”

Never underestimate your intuition as a parent or caregiver. If you feel your child is not achieving developmental milestones appropriately, contact his pediatrician. If further intervention is needed, an evaluation by an occupational therapist, physical therapist and/or speech pathologist may be recommended.
