A Taste To Remember

Despite the months of planning and poring over every minute detail of a wedding, it has often been said that what people remember most about wedding receptions is the food and if they had fun. Therefore, instead of worrying about choosing Jordan almonds over chocolate truffles, or whether the cake should have an extra tier, couples may want to pay more attention to selecting their reception menus.

Although certain foods are wedding staples, it could pay for couples to think with their stomachs instead of their heads when selecting wedding day fare. Having a selection of foods that taste as good as they look is a wise idea over having certain foods simply because they are trendy.

Whether you are cooking yourself, having a family member serve as chef or relying on the menu of the reception hall, think about foods that will please guests and select those items, regardless of them being fancy. Here are some other tips.

• You want foods to be filling but not so much so that guests have to waddle to the dance floor. If you're planning on several courses, keep portion sizes small to offer a taste of the different items offered.

• Choose items people have heard of. Instead of tornadoes of beef, select a hearty prime rib. Just because a dish sounds fancy doesn't make it taste better. If a guest doesn't know what he or she is eating, it can be uncomfortable. Now is not the time to experiment with exotic foods, either. Otherwise, some picky eaters may be left hungry.

• Think about the foods you love and see if they can be incorporated at the wedding. Although a breakfast bar at an evening event may seem funny, waffles and omelets may appeal to a greater number of guests than a gourmet fish creation.

• Don't make vegetarians an afterthought. Too often, vegetarians must eat whatever the kitchen can pull together, which is usually a compilation of the vegetable garnishes from the meat dishes. Make an effort to have a true vegetarian dish that is intricate and delicious.

• Mashed potatoes are a crowd pleaser. Serve little portions of mashed potatoes in cocktail glasses and enable guests to top as they see fit with bacon bits, cheese or chives.

• No idea is silly, and serving any type of food in a hors d'oeuvre style can make it acceptable at a formal affair, whether that food is pizza or caviar-topped crackers.

• If you have a favorite restaurant that serves delicious food, find out if they will cater your wedding.

• Just because it isn't on the menu doesn't mean it cannot be prepared. Talk to the catering manager and let him or her know your preferences. Provided you're willing to pay a little more, there's a good chance you can have items that aren't on the standard catering menu.

• Think outside the box for your cocktail hour "bars." A bread bar, a dipping station, milk and cookies service, or vegetable bar are options that go against the standard cheese and pasta stations.

Although it's your wedding, ultimately the goal is to please the guests. By choosing foods they will love and rave about, you're guaranteed positive remarks on your wedding.

Navigating an interfaith wedding Faith plays an important role in many people's lives, perhaps even more so when it comes time to celebrate a wedding. However, couples who do not share the same faith may have to make some compromises.

Although romantic feelings may transcend faith, heritage and other factors that make people so different, individuals who are quite religious often find that there are some challenges to getting married to someone outside their own faith.

Depending on the faith, some religions will not honor a wedding that does not conform to their strict guidelines for a wedding within the faith. Oftentimes, this means that both participants need to have been raised according to the faith, including meeting certain religious milestones throughout their lives. For example, Catholics must have been baptized, received communion and been confirmed under the auspices of the Catholic church before being allowed to marry. They must present official certificates of these sacraments in order to receive a religious Catholic wedding.

Those of the Jewish faith may believe in a "bashert," a belief that everyone has a soul mate. According to the Talmud, 40 days before a male child is conceived a voice from heaven an-

nounces whose daughter he is going to marry.

In Yiddish, this perfect match is called "bashert," a word meaning fate or destiny. The bashert is typically one who is also Jewish.

To handle the intricacies of an interfaith marriage, it is wise to speak to clergy in your respective religions to see what will be required of you as a couple. There could be workarounds, depending on what the couple decide.

Some couples feel it is in their best interest if either one of them converts to the other's religion so that the ceremony is easier. Others choose to hold two distinct religious ceremonies if the officiants are lenient in their rules to allow it to happen. In other cases, couples feel it is better to have a non-denominational wedding to avoid any obstacles. Even though this ceremony will not be sanctioned by either church, the couple can still choose to include prayers and customs specific to their faiths in the ceremony.

Many couples decide that their mutual love and happiness is reason enough for an interfaith wedding, even if that means sacrificing acceptance by their clergy and church. Interfaith couples should begin wedding planning early to discover what will be expected of them to have the wedding they desire.

Some might say a long celebrity marriage is one that endures the duration of the newly betrothed's trip down the aisle. We've seen Britney Spears dissolve a marriage after 55 hours and Kim Kardashian call it quits after 72 days.

It seems even money can't buy matrimonial happiness.

But some couples have been together for 50, 60 years and say they're still as much in love as they were the day they spoke their "I dos." What do they know that others do not?

According to clinical psychologist and relationship guru Dr. Phil McGraw, "We all need to be flexible and to compromise in marriage, but you've got to be true to your core traits and characteristics, what I call your authentic self." Some couples enter a relationship projecting a persona they believe the other person wants -- one that really isn't what they're all about. This could be a woman trying to fill the role of her husband's nurturing mom or a guy playing the protector to his wife. In reality, marriage is more of a partnership, and truth and trust are often at the basis of good marriages.

• There's no such thing as the perfect marriage. Some couples create an image of what they think marriage is supposed to be, and that image that often goes "poof" once reality sets in. Even soulmates are bound to frustrate or irritate one another from time to time.

• Couples should express their frustrations.

and eventually destroy a marriage. Talking about the things that are bothering you with your partner opens up a discussion and can help you work through things.

• Make time for romance. It's easily said but not so easily done. Too often married couples forget what it was like to date when all of their attention was spent on each other instead of the house, kids, work, etc. Today there seems to be even more distractions, from e-mails to texts to pressure and obligations at the office. Happy couples find the time to spend quality time with their spouses -- even if that's only 10 minutes of alone time a day.

•Put "we" first. Many people operate on a "me" mentality. When you're part of a couple, give more to your spouse than you take.

If he or she is doing the same, you're working collectively for the benefit of the marriage instead of yourselves.

• Respect each other. Often couples having troubles realize they treat strangers better than they treat each other. Would you use the insults or unflattering terms that you sometimes throw at your spouse with a complete stranger? Probably not. Good marriages are based on a foundation of respect and love.

It's easy to lose feelings of love if the respect is gone.

Couples can realize that there are some thorns that come with the roses of marriage, and staying happy together does take work for it to all be worth it.

Checklist 3 MONTHS

Plan a luncheon for your bridesmaids.

BEFORE WEDDING

Make appointments for a hairdresser, makeup artist and manicurist.

Carefully prepare directions, including simply drawn maps, if necessary, to help guide guests to the wedding and reception, and to hotels. For guests who will travel a long distance to your wedding, consider assembling an information package on fun things to do and see in your area.

Begin addressing invitations and announcements. Select a special stamp at the post office. Invitations should go in the mail six to eight weeks before your big day.

Give the caterer or other food suppliers a close idea of the number of guests you expect.

1 WEEK

BEFORE WEDDING Make final checks with all your vendors: officiant, musicians, florist, photographer, videographer, limousine or other transportation provider, caterers and baker.

Finalize honeymoon plans. If you’re traveling overseas, check again that your passports are current and that you have any necessary visas.

Ask a friend or family member to arrange for wedding gifts that may be brought to your reception to be delivered to your home or another safe spot.

Gather necessary birth or baptismal certificates you may need for your wedding license.

Wrap gifts for bridal attendants and have them ready for the rehearsal dinner.

1 MONTH

Purchase travelers’ checks and reconfirm honeymoon travel and hotel plans.

BEFORE WEDDING

See that checks are written and ready to be handed out to vendors at the agreedupon time.

Get your wedding license.

Make sure all reservations are in place for honeymoon travel.

Have a final fitting of your gown and make sure your attendants have theirs.

Check with bridesmaids to make sure they have their gowns and are getting them adjusted.

Shop for gifts for your bridesmaids. Offer to help you fiancé select gifts for his attendants.

Check that your menu selections and service plans are locked in place with the caterer.

Purchase a special book to keep track of wedding gifts as they arrive.

Select your “going away” outfit and special items for your trousseau.

Write those thank-you notes on a daily basis.

Make a date with your photographer for any formal portraits you desire.

If you plan a formal dinner for your reception, it’s time to draw up a seating plan and make up place cards.

Make an appointment to have your hair done just before your portrait session and again the day or so before your wedding.

Consider including your bridesmaids in a “day of beauty” before your wedding with manicures, hair styling, massages and makeup sessions.

Inform your caterer of the final number of guests. Confirm that out-of-town guests are set with hotel accommodations, transportation and wedding-day directions.

1 DAY

BEFORE WEDDING Take time to relax and enjoy a massage, manicure and pedicure.

Traditionally, this is the day for your rehearsal ceremony and rehearsal dinner.

Check with your florist to confirm dates and time of flower deliveries.

Review your wedding-day transportation plans and make sure drivers are clear about addresses, times and number of passengers.

2 MONTHS

Make name or address changes official on documents, including driver’s license, Social Security forms and financial accounts.

BEFORE WEDDING

THE WEDDING DAY

Meet with your photographer to specify the formal shots you want taken of the bridal party, as well as specific, candid shots you’d like taken during the reception.

Mail out your wedding invitations and announcements.

Have wedding portraits taken.

Finalize the music that will be played during your wedding ceremony.

Meet with musicians who will provide entertainment during your reception and orchestrate precisely what you want and when you want it played. Don’t be shy to voice your preferences, down to the volume, favorite songs you’d like to hear or even songs you don’t want played.

Plan your rehearsal dinner and a brunch or fun activity for out-of-town guests to enjoy on the day following your wedding.

If you plan on photography before the ceremony allow ample time so you’re not rushed.

Relax, and remember: This is your special day, the result of all your careful planning.

Now it’s time to enjoy. Refuse to let any glitch get to you. Savor every moment of this sacred day.

Review the video plans with your videographer.

Send bridal portrait and wedding announcement to newspapers.

Allow time for dressing, makeup and hair styling.

2 WEEKS

BEFORE WEDDING Keep writing those thank-you notes for wedding gifts.

Pick up wedding rings.

Begin packing for honeymoon.

Purchase special accessories for your wedding-day attire.

Destination Anywhere: Packing for the honeymoon

• If you don't already have a suitcase, choose a design with a hard case. This way it won't expand while packing, and there's no chance it will ever exceed the size limits.

• Roll clothes because it will limit wrinkling.

• Use a layering technique to fit a multitude of items and protect against displacement during transit.

• Fill the bottom of the suitcase with the heavier items: shoes, jeans, jackets, and any gear or tech items.

• Be sure to know airline requirements in advance. While some restrictions have been lifted, the Traffic Safety Administration and the airlines themselves may have rules regarding how much liquid or sharp items you can bring along.

• Keep important documents, such as tickets, reservation numbers and emergency contacts, with you in a travel bag.

Any prescriptions you need should be carried as well.

• Place an emergency outfit in your carry-on in the event your luggage is lost or temporarily detained.

• Consider packing lightly and buying some necessities at your destination.

• Sometimes it is less expensive to ship items instead of paying airline baggage fees. Investigate these options, especially on the return trip.

• Next, layer dresses and slacks so they lay lengthwise on top of the first layer of items. It's okay if the ends extend over the edge of the suitcase.

• Take advantage of laundry service on honeymoons so you won't return with a bag full of dirty items that need laundering right away. Also, doing laundry on your trip limits the number of things you need to pack because you can wash and rewear.

• Shirts and sweaters (if applicable) can be rolled and then layered next. Use any overhanging slacks and dresses to fold over the shirts and keep them in place.

• Make the most of the honeymoon by packing early. Come your travel day, you can simply hop in the car and look forward to the vacation ahead.

• Lightweight items, like lingerie and undergarments, can be placed on top. Also, include toiletries that are sealed in leakproof bags.

When basking in the afterglow of a momentous wedding, most couples would rather think about scores of other things than packing for their honeymoons. But with ever-changing restrictions on what and how much a person can bring along on airlines and other modes of travel, packing is something that eventually must be done.
