About thirty reservists from the Régiment de Maisonneuve, accompanied by members of the 34 Service Battalion and the Fusiliers Mont-Royal, took part in winter training in the municipality of Shefford, during the weekend of February 17 to 19.
This annual exercise was designed to prepare reservists to deploy and operate in cold weather. Although Quebec experienced a mild spell in early February, members experi-

enced a rather cold weekend and set up camp and makeshift shelters in -26° C temperatures.
Upon their arrival on Friday evening, the reservists quickly set up the tents and the necessary equipment to be ready to operate by 6 a.m. the following morning. It all started with off-road navigation and then the erection of makeshift shelters at a second site. Sunday was mainly dedicated to defensive position instruction and various lessons on survival in cold weather.
For Captain Anthony Savard, course commander at 2nd Canadian Division and Joint Task Force (East) headquarters, such an exercise serves to maintain the operational capabilities of the regiment. “We have very good instructors in the unit and they allow candidates to acquire different notions to operate in all kinds of circumstances. The exercise validates the members of the unit and maintains our ability to operate and evolve in a winter environment.”

The closure of the Air Task Force – Romania operation last December marked the end of an important mission for Canada, NATO and Romania. The success of this task would not have been possible without the mission closure team from 3 Canadian Support Unit (3 CSU).
Operation REASSURANCE in Romania was a NATO air policing mission led by the Royal Canadian Air Force that began in 2014. Its objective was to monitor and deter violations of Romanian airspace in response to security concerns over events in Ukraine.
The operation involved the establishment of an Air Task Force (ATF) at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base
3 CSU contributes to the closure of OP REASSURANCE in Romania
in Romania, consisting of CF-18 Hornet fighter aircraft and Canadian Armed Forces support personnel. The objective of this mission was to strengthen relations between Canada and Romania, as well as to reinforce NATO's presence in the Black Sea region.
Canada's presence was necessary following the annexation of Crimea, as stated by the Honourable Anita Anand, Canada's Minister of National Defence: “Ever since Russia’s initial invasion of Ukraine in 2014, Canada has been steadfast in demonstrating our commitment to NATO’s collective defence across Europe. Air surveillance and policing is a critical part of maintaining a nation’s security in the face of aggressive nations that continuously seek to test the defences of their
neighbours, something Canada has its own experience within the Arctic. Our mission in Romania allows us to contribute to NATO’s collective defence, and allows us to deliver capabilities that are a tangible symbol of Canada’s resolve to NATO’s collective defence.”
However, December 2nd, 2022, marked the end of this operation and thus the closure of ATF Romania. In order to support the termination of this operational theatre, the establishment of a Joint Task Force Support Component - Mission Closure Team (JTFSC-MCT), from the Canadian Forces Joint Operational Support Group (CFJOSG), was required to repatriate the equipment and effectively close the operation. JTFSC-MCT is an operational capability that allows for the repatria-
tion, removal, or transfer of equipment, as well as operational support. This capability is essential to ensure that our military operations are conducted effectively, even when they must be suspended or terminated.
JTFSC-MCT's activities in Romania included a headquarters to coordinate operations, a production line to return equipment to Canada, a movement detachment to transport equipment, and several other sections such as engineers and communications specialists. The entire JTFSC-MCT staff was composed of experts in their respective fields. This support component allowed resources to be quickly redeployed to other operations or to reconstitute units in Canada.

3 CSU role
It is important to note that the success of this task would not have been possible without the Mission Closure Team from 3 CSU, based in Montreal. This group of nine members was instrumental in the success of the closure. The 3 CSU is a unit specialized in logistics, supply and operational support. Its members are experts in material and supply management, specifically associated with opening and closing operations. They were therefore a perfect choice for this task.
The 3 CSU team was responsible for the logistical coordination for the return of all equipment used during the mission in Romania. This coordina-
tion work was crucial to ensure that everything was returned to Canada efficiently. The specific tasks that this team had to perform were, among others, the planning of the packaging requirements for hazardous material, the stocktaking, and the physical verification of the material. In addition to that, the team was responsible for loading the equipment into shipping containers. During this task, more than 95,000 items, with a total value of over $26 million Canadian Dollars, were processed by this team.
The establishment of the JTFSC-MC, along with the 3 CSU closure team, allowed this operation to be completed efficiently and on time.

Chewing, saliva and weight management
ler pieces. It is your teeth that do this work and then the second stage begins: your mouth begins to produce saliva. The latter contains enzymes that contribute to the proper functioning of digestion. In scientific terms, the amylase in saliva is said to break glycosidic bonds or, in plain English, to break down sugar! At this stage, the food is still at the level of your mouth. We are talking here about predigestion.
If you don't take enough time to chew your food, the enzymes in your saliva don't have time to do their job. Result: your stomach and the rest of your digestive tract have to work harder! In other words, chewing is one of your best allies to ensure good digestion.
Chewing and satiety
But that's not all! Chewing well has another advantage: you will probably eat less!
|Mathieu Boudreau, health promotion specialist
What if, instead of devouring your meals in minutes, you gave yourself a few more minutes to savour them?
When you want to manage your weight, food choice is important. If you eat too much fat or too much sugar on a daily basis, weight management may become an issue in the long term. The quantity of food is also likely to become… Weigh in the balance! But did you know that your digestion could become your best ally?
Chewing is the mechanical action of cutting and grinding food into smal-
The faster you eat, the faster you fill your stomach and the more likely you are to give it too much food. Your appetite is regulated by hormones. The two main ones are ghrelin, which sends the hunger signal to the brain, and leptin, which sends the satiety signal.
It is important to know that leptin is secreted about 15 minutes after your first bite. This means that if you eat quickly, you can easily overload your stomach within the first 15 minutes of your meal. On the contrary, if you slow down the tempo and take the time to chew, leptin will have time to transmit its satiety message to your brain. You will therefore have the chance to eat less!
Ultimately, chewing well is good for the health of your digestive system and for your waistline!

NEARLY 400 CADETS gathered at
Saint-Jean Garrison

Capt Cédric Séguin
On February 25, nearly 400 Marine cadets from the Montreal area gathered on the parade ground of the academic building of the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School to participate in a seamanship competition.
Captain Cédric Séguin, Public Affairs Officer of the Regional Cadet Support Unit (East) - Estrie, maintains that the event was eagerly awaited by all. “This is one of the first big activities we've organized since the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Five hundred cadets from 24 Marine cadet corps were expected for the event. They arrived from everywhere between Gatineau and Trois-Rivières, via Abitibi, Montreal, Laval, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Drummondville. “Due to bad weather conditions, some were unfortunately unable to join us.”
Throughout the competition, the cadets were able to put their knowledge and skills to the test during the various events. “Among the activities were map navigation, knots, flag communication and boat workshop. We had sailboats and whalers on site and the cadets were able to board and discover these boats.”
1 - Among other things, participants were able to board survival crafts.
2 & 3 - Maritime navigation exercises were on the program.

A host of outdoor activities await you with MARC-ANTOINE MERCIER
|Yves
Bélanger, Servir
Since his early childhood, Marc-Antoine Mercier has had the greatest passion for sports and outdoor activities. Since January 24, he has held the position of Outdoor Specialist Community Recreation Instructor for the Personnel Support Programs (PSP) of Saint-Jean Garrison.
As far as he can remember, he has always had an attraction for nature and what one can experience there. “Already, as a child, nature and sports fascinated me. Thanks to my family, I started ice skating at two and a half years old and since then I have never stopped learning different outdoor sports.”
Football, ultimate frisbee, climbing, canoeing, kayaking, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, telemark, golf, rugby, snowboarding and archery are some of the sports he practices. “I have also done a lot of mountain biking. I participated in competitions. I was ranked 10th in Quebec. However, one day, I fell and an injury forced me to put this sport aside, at least the competition.”
The new instructor mentions that he is much happier outside, in nature, than between four walls. “It is outside, in a tent, that I sleep best. The outdoors calms me down. This is really where I feel on my X.”
Ex-military
The taste for adventure also led Marc-Antoine Mercier to enlist in the Reserve for 11 years. He started at The Sherbrooke Hussars where he was a reconnaissance driver. “I was there for six years.” He then joined the Naval Reserve in Chicoutimi, where he worked for five years. “I was a naval warfare Officer in Her Majesty's Canadian Ship Cham-
plain.” Knowing that he would go to live in France for a few years, he subsequently decided to leave the Reserve.
Mr. Mercier's atypical career continued with various training courses as instructor, lifeguard and driver of land and water vehicles. “This led me, among other things, to work for 18 months in Gaspé for a company specializing in adventure tourism.”
Today, his free time is mainly related to medieval combat, climbing or digital drawing. “I also go out camping or outdoors whenever I have the chance. I always love to learn new things.”
Many activity ideas in mind
With his new position at the PSP, Marc-Antoine Mercier has many outings ideas in mind. “Among other things, I am thinking of organizing a picnic at sunset. I am also working on setting up an outdoor survival activity at night.”
In terms of indoor activities, the instructor indicates that he is very eager to present to the customers of the Saint-Jean Garrison sports centre the climbing wall of the palestra which has recently been improved. “We have reviewed it and added new, more challenging and diverse routes. Climbers will have even more

will allow us to offer indoor archery workshops.”
To find out about all the outdoor activities that will be offered in the coming months by Community Recreation, watch the spring-summer program of the Saint-Jean Garrison sports centre which will be published soon.
Backcountry camping and hiking await members of the military community and citizens!

From field to tatami
For many years, Captain Fatou Camara has been recognized for her performance in soccer, a sport she began practicing at the age of 12. Some time ago, she decided to return to another of her favorite sports, taekwondo.
Unit: 51st Field Ambulance
Sports: Taekwondo
What led you to practice your discipline?
I discovered taekwondo at the university. A few years ago, I started practicing it again on a regular basis. I really like the values that this sport conveys. To list a few:
• Self-control: it is knowing how to dominate oneself, to control one's emotions.
• Humility: it is recognizing one's limits and abilities by showing modesty.
• Loyalty: it is being faithful to one's commitments, respecting the rules of honour and probity.
Taekwondo is excellent for working on speed of execution, flexibility and precision.
What are your greatest achievements in this sport?
I was named a recipient of the Female Hope Award while practicing taekwondo in university. Presently, I participate in various civil competitions in order to finish among the first.
What is your strength?
My strength and my power are my strengths, as well as my speed of learning. Bodybuilding is also part of my training.
During a competition, what do you focus on?
I observe the approach of my opponents a lot in order to understand their strategy and defeat them by surprise.
Poor performance or failure is part of an athlete's journey. How do you live with the worst performance?
I work harder and I continue to listen to the advice of my coaches.
What influence do the athletes you meet have on your training and your performance?
They are all examples of perseverance and determination. I always feel extremely privileged when I receive advice from them.
What role do your loved ones play in your success?
My motivation is to continue to be healthy and be an active aunt to my nieces for many more years!
What other sports do you practice? Football.
Do you have a ritual that brings you luck before a competition? No.
What would you say to someone who wants to try your discipline? It's a great sport. It is extremely gratifying.
This section introduces you to members of the Defence Team, civilian or military, who train rigorously in order to participate in various competitions. Do you know an athlete whose efforts deserve to be recognized? Contact the editorial’s team at servir@forces.gc.ca

Officially launched in 2021, the boxing training club now has nearly 80 members among the officer cadets and naval cadets of the Royal Military College Saint-Jean (MRC Saint-Jean), which makes it the most popular club of the institution at the moment.
Although boxing is not a sport promoted by the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), boxing training represents excellent physical fitness. It is for this reason that RMC Saint-Jean agreed to found such a club.
A discovery
Officer Cadet Vandy Bédard
Prakongkham never had much interest in combat sports. Two years ago,
BUILD CONFIDENCE with boxing training
he discovered boxing training and literally fell in love with this discipline. Today, he is the vice-president of the RMC Saint-Jean boxing training club.
He explains that although officially launched in the fall of 2021, the club began operations the year before.
“It was Lieutenant Olivier Sauvagnat who was an officer cadet at that time, who had the idea of setting it up. When I went to a training session, I was immediately hooked.”
Kill two birds with one stone
OCdt Bédard Prakongkham explains that practicing this sport has allowed him to develop real selfconfidence. “Besides, it has helped me a lot to be in better physical
shape and I now know how to defend myself better.” He also likes being able to train alongside people who have the same interests as him.
Three boxing training sessions take place each week. Club members participate on a voluntary basis. “I try to go there at least twice a week. We have three different coaches, Marc-André Gauthier, Yves Trottier and Alexandre Bradette. It's good, because everyone has a different style.”
OCdt Bédard Prakongkham advises all his fellow students to try this training at least once. “I think everyone can pick up something in this sport which is great for maintaining good physical shape.”
Each session begins with a warmup, followed by a period of boxing
simulation (shadow boxing). “We always end with a series of exercises for the abdominals, muscles that are essential for this type of sport.”
As far as he is concerned, OCdt Bédard Prakongkham has every intention of continuing to train in boxing once he leaves RMC Saint-Jean to pursue his career in the CAF. “If this type of training is not offered at the garrison where I will be transferred, I will go and do it in a civilian gymnasium. For me, it's the perfect way to exercise and burn off my energy.”
Please note that only officer cadets and naval cadets can join this club. Those interested in doing so should write to vandy.prakongkham@ cmrsj-rmcsj.ca.
