“It really is a poignant story” wrote Captain(N) Jill Marrak, Canadian Defence Attaché to the Embassy of Canada in South Korea when describing the participation of two officer cadets (OCdts) in a special ceremony held at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery Korea. And an inspiring one as well, as it is a story of remembrance of the utmost sacrifice, one that goes back three generations.

WO 2 Trenter was killed in the early hours of 11 October 1951 during a Chinese attack on A Company’s position. The attack focused on 2 Platoon, A Company, and was repelled in part by the company’s anti-tank platoon, firing recoilless rifles.

LEST WE FORGET

Last 28 February, OCdts Jacob Trenter and Athena Pucovsky arrived at the Korea Military Academy in South Korea, which they will attend until 17 June as part of an international exchange within the International Studies program offered at Royal Military College Saint-Jean. Studying abroad in Korea is certainly an exceptional opportunity, but for OCdt Trenter and his family, it will remain a milestone. It is only last December that he, along with his family, learned that his great-grandfather Warrant Officer Class II (WO 2) George Sydney Trenter was buried in South Korea. The family knew very little or nothing then of WO 2 Trenter’s service, as OCdt Trenter’s grandfather never knew his father, since he died in service at the age of 25 leaving behind two young sons.

MILITARY CAREER

On Thursday 24 March, the day started with a ceremony marking the opening of a photo exhibit highlighting Canada’s contribution to the Korean War at the United Nations Peace Memorial Hall. Following this singular event, the Canadian delegation among whom the

Canadian Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, held a moving remembrance ceremony at the cemetery to honour OCdt Trenter’s great-grandfather. This was quite moving for all attendees, as the cemetery’s Custodian solemnly presented OCdt Trenter with an outline of his great-grandfather’s service.

The Division held a front of approximately 19 km, with seven battalions in the front line, one battalion in a back-stop position and one battalion in reserve. The three battalions

Upon hearing the details of these tragic events, OCdt Trenter explained that it was like his great-grandfather had died twice: once during the Korean War and a second time on this day when for the first time a member of the family was able to visit the grave. His off-thecuff comments and deep sense of loss touched everyone, said the Defence Attaché, Capt(N) Marrak, and drove home that the 376 Canadian soldiers buried in the cemetery left behind precious family members. The impact of the war on those left behind is still being felt despite the passage of 7 decades, she said. Indeed, the Monument of Canadian Fallen in the cemetery, commemorates more than 30,000 Canadians who served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1953 and as peacekeepers in Korea until 1957. On this special day, WO 2 Trenter was remembered with respect and honour for his dedication, courage, and the ultimate sacrifice of his life. The OCdts extend their gratitude to the Department of National Defence and the Director Foreign Liaison who have provided funding for this visit.

The final stage of exercise RÉACTION ROYALE 2022 took place in Valcartier from March 25 to 27 for the 34 and 35 Canadian Brigade Groups, supported by the headquarters of the 2nd Canadian Division. The purpose of this command post exercise was to develop new Reserve capabilities to provide greater operational flexibility to 2nd Canadian Division / Joint Task Force (East) (2 Cdn Div/JTF (East)).

Although this exercise is held an-

nually (outside the COVID-19 pandemic), some of its objectives were different this year. Instead of serving as validation for Territorial Battalion Group (TBG) command posts, it served instead to train a Reserve Land Component Command (LCC) to serve as a potential alternative to the LCC usually provided by the 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group. Speaking to exercise participants, Brigadier-General Stéphane Boivin, Commander of 2 Cdn Div/ JTF (East), said, “You have shown that it is possible for a headquarters, made up of the two brigades reserve,

to conduct national operations. I have confidence and I know that you are ready.”

The training scenario was one of flooding in southern Quebec, in the Chaudière and Richelieu river regions.

The trained LCC had under its command two Task Forces (TF) based on the Montreal and Quebec TBGs. Their mission was to support the civil authorities in order to help the Canadian population affected by these floods.

According to Colonel David Shane, of 2 Cdn Div HQ and director of the exercise, “this training not only en-

hanced our level of readiness to assist Canadians in a possible crisis situation at home, but also developed and to experiment with a superior command structure made up of reservists.”

This final stage of the RÉACTION ROYALE 2022 exercise was a success for the dozens of participants involved. The training objectives were achieved and a large number of lessons learned were noted, both in terms of the exercise itself and the command and control of a domestic operation in a LCC.

They reload their machine At the Montreal Garrison, nine CAF members have accepted the Health Promotion invitation and are currently participating in the Recharge your machine program.

Carl Coicou, health promotion specialist at Personnel Support Programs (PSP) in Montreal, explains that the group is halfway through. “This activity was created to rekindle motivation among participants and help them resume good lifestyle habits following confinement. The program offers 16 workshops, spread over eight consecutive weeks.”

He maintains that the synergy and cohesion are excellent in the group.

“Participants enjoy the experience and encourage each other. Many feel better since starting the program. One CAF member even scored silver on the FORCE Evaluation and was five points shy of gold. He attributes his strong performance to his fitness and the good support provided by the PSP Montreal team.”

The topics covered in the information capsules include motivation, injury prevention, healthy eating and stress management. “In terms of physical activities, we have pickleball, spinning, volleyball, hiking, mindfulness meditation and we offer introductory sessions to running.” (YB)

CAF members have better dental health than the general population Yves Bélanger, Servir

Better access and free care are among the elements that would explain why CAF members have better oral health than the general population. On the occasion of Oral Health Month, Servir presents two articles on the dental clinics of the SaintJean and Montreal Garrisons.

Captain Linda Chau, military dentist at the dental clinic at 1 Dental Unit - Saint-Jean Detachment, and Sergeant Mélodie Noël, dental clinic coordinator at 1 Dental Unit Detachment Montreal, were able to confirm that the members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) display good dental health.

It is the members of the Saint-Jean clinic team who notice the poorest dental health conditions. “The reason is simple, our clientele is mainly made up of young candidates from the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School (CFLRS) who are entering the CAF. Very often, they did not have access to

an insurance plan to cover part of the costs,” notes Capt Chau. “We are therefore more often confronted with the problems of cavities.”

Once enlisted, the dental condition of CFLRS candidates greatly improves. “In addition to having access to free services, it is part of the member’s routine to ensure that they have good dental hygiene. It makes a big difference,” says Capt Chau.

Sgt Noël adds that military patients follow the recommendations given by dentists and their team members very well. “Our system allows us to offer better follow-up for our patients.”

Sgt Noël explains that the most recurrent oral health problems among soldiers concern periodontal problems, that is to say gum disease. “It is often due to the fact that many of them are still heavy smokers,” concludes Capt Chau.

Watch out for energy drinks!

For a long time, we have heard about the harmful effects on the teeth of sugar, tea and coffee taken in large quantities. Appeared on the shelves about twenty years ago, energy drinks are also a product that should be avoided in excessive quantities according to our two dental health specialists.

“These drinks contain a lot of sugar and can cause cavities,” says Sgt Noël.

Capt Chau goes on to argue that it is easy to detect patients who consume a large amount of energy drinks. “They cause very specific damage such as dental erosion.

It's somewhat akin to the teething of a person grinding their teeth, but you can see that it's clearly caused by too much acidic drink consumption.”

More than thirty people work at the SaintJean and Montreal detachments of the 1 Dental Unit to ensure the dental health of CAF members in the region.

First of all, it is important to note that the two dental clinics are very different since the one in Saint-Jean mainly serves candidates from the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School (CFLRS). “Before the imposition of sanitary measures, we received up to 200 patients a week here,” explains Captain Linda Chau, military dentist at the dental clinic of the 1 Dental Unit – Saint-Jean Detachment.

“In Montreal, we were talking more about an average of 75 patients per week.”

The Saint-Jean Garrison team is made up of 25 people. “In addition to dentists, there are four other categories of positions: dental assistant, dental hygienist, dental technician and receptionist,” says Capt Chau. At the Montreal Garrison, the team has seven people.

All basic dental services, annual exams and cleanings, restorations, prosthodontic services and orthodontic consultations are offered by the two work teams. “We can also perform endodontic and dental surgery treatments that are less complex. The other treatments are entrusted to specialists from civilian

Two dedicated teams! offices, as the case may be,” notes Sergeant Mélodie Noël, coordinator of the dental clinic at 1 Dental Unit – Montreal Detachment.

SERVICES AFFECTED BY THE PANDEMIC

If you are one of those who believe that COVID-19 has not changed much for oral hygiene specialists who have already been wearing the procedure mask for several years, think again. The pandemic has had a major impact on the way all team members work.

Sgt Noël indicates that since the beginning of the pandemic, dental clinics can no longer receive as many patients per day due to the disinfection protocol which requires more time. “In addition, the patient parade had to be replaced by telephone triage to avoid contact.”

Capt Chau adds that air filtration devices have been added to the treatment rooms at SaintJean Garrison since they are open. “Despite everything, we had to add downtime between patients to allow the air to regenerate properly.”

For hygienists, the work is longer. “Ultrasound devices have long been banned during the pandemic due to the aerosols produced. Our specialists therefore had to work only with a curette, which was more laborious for them and uncomfortable for our patients,” says Capt Chau.

To this day, he sees this hockey player with his parents in arenas and they discuss the impact Sgt Allaire had on his development. “It's very rewarding to see young people flourish and to see players playing a level higher, that's my report card”.

Sergeant Steeven Allaire has always enjoyed training in all its forms. At Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School (CFLRS), he was an instructor on platoons of candidates for several years. He got involved as a minor hockey coach in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu due to is his interest in teaching and also in combining business with pleasure.

FOR THE FUTURE

Today, Sgt Allaire has nearly 20 years of Regular Force service. After a short stint in the Reserve in 2001 as an infantryman, he changed trade to Resource Management Support Clerk in 2022. His current tasks involve supervising personnel, but also supporting them in their professional development and reaching the next rank. A bit like hockey players, he helps his colleagues to flourish. Thus, he wants to pursue his military career as long as possible.

His two boys were young when the family settled in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Soon they were signed up for hockey and have never stopped playing since. “I spent endless hours freezing at the arena so I decided to get involved,” Sgt Allaire tells us with a laugh. Naturally generous, he therefore began to train young people in 2012. It is an average of ten hours per week that he dedicates to the team for practices, games and tournaments.

He will continue his involvement with the minor hockey club, because he considers it a very important school of life both for him and for young people. Everyone wins – young people learn resilience and the values of hard work, success and failure and Sgt Allaire gains a sense of accomplishment.

A CONSIDERABLE IMPACT IN THE LIVES OF THE YOUTH

He fondly remembers a young player in the bantam B section who, before arriving on his team, had been left out and never had the opportunity to develop to his full potential.

Tracy Squadron from Royal Military College Saint-Jean (RMC Saint-Jean) is the great winner of the annual elementary drill competition which took place on April 9 at the institution's Couture Pavilion. It won all three trophies presented during the annual event.

in Kingston, Master Warrant Officer Stéphane Paquette, from the Coordination Service of SaintJean Garrison, and Chief Warrant Officer Éric Dugas, of the 3e Bataillon, Royal 22e Régiment.

The jury evaluated each movement and sequence of exercises carried out by the four squadrons. It also took into consideration the clothing of the participants during the inspection carried out before the beginning of the events.

They determined that the Tracy Squadron performed best on basic drill and colour guard. Consequently, Tracy received the trophy for the best squadron.

Basic drill and colour parties are important elements for the Canadian Armed Forces during protocol ceremonies. The preparation of officer cadets and naval cadets for these exercises is excellent for fostering discipline, rigor, attention to detail and teamwork.

The RCAF invites you to its race

The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) invites all CAF members and the public to “earn their wings” by participating in its annual race, which will be held virtually from May 28 to June 19.

Participants will have the choice among the four courses offered (3 km, 5 km, 10 km and half-marathon) and cross the finish line at their own pace. Runners can de-

termine their route or run on a treadmill.

The RCAF Run welcomes participants of all fitness levels. Whether it's to achieve a new personal record or simply to explore the landscape or keep in shape, there is something for everyone.

He also recalled that the she has always conveyed the message that “nothing is impossible, even for women” and that this has a significant impact on the perception of women in the Forces. “The combination of her professional successes, her decorations, her family, her engaging personality and her positive media visibility make her an invaluable asset to the military colleges, the CAF, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and Canadian society. For these reasons, RMC Saint-Jean selected her to be the 12th personality and also the first woman inducted into the Hall of Fame.”

He composed the Naval Reserve 100th Anniversary March MUSICIAN AT HEART

21-year-old Sailor 2nd Class Tarek Bouhennache, of Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Donnacona, composed the military march that will mark 100 years of the Canadian Naval Reserve in 2023. His work, Marching over the seas, was selected by the members of the jury during a competition launched within the institution.

S2 Bouhennache was a cadet for seven years with 555 Maple Leaf Squadron. In 2019, he won first place at the Eastern Region Cadet Music Festival. In the same year, he was also awarded Gold Merit of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award for achieving various goals during his junior years. “It was really within the squadron that I discovered a passion for military marching.”

The trombonist is obviously very proud to have won the competition. “My piece was officially presented on February 2. The goal is for the majority of Naval Reserve units across the country to be able to learn and master it by next year.”

He explains that Marching over the seas represents the way sailors stay on course at sea, regardless of the obstacles that stand in their way. “They are always moving forward, without looking back and without stopping until they have reached their destination.”

The young musician, currently in his third year of a Bachelor of Music at McGill University, wanted Canadians to be able to have a march for them, composed by one of them. “Most of the marches we perform, even those representing an official Canadian unit, branch or event, are composed by British or Americans.”

Solutions to save on groceries!

Captain Sara McRae's passion for the epee possible target.”

Twenty years ago, Captain Sara McRae, doctor at 41 Canadian Forces Health Services Centre – Saint-Jean, discovered fencing and the handling of the epee.

After participating in various military competitions, she continues to devote time to the practice of this sport that she loves. She is also involved with the International Military Sports Council (CISM).

Although she likes to fight alone against an opponent, Capt McRae admits to having a lot of fun fighting as a team. “The strategy is different.

The goal is to seek out the strengths of each player.”

The officer explains that it was when she arrived at Royal Military College (RMC) of Canada, in Kingston, that she began to take an interest in fencing. “I had the chance to try it once when I was in primary school, but it was not a very accessible sport. At RMC, I began practicing this sport and saw how much it was made for me.”

What she appreciates about fencing is that this discipline combines physical training and strategy. “It is important to be in good physical shape to practice this sport, as it is very demanding on the cardiovascular level. Some fights can last longer than 15 minutes.

For us, leg strength is paramount.”

The officer therefore spends a few hours a week in the gym to ensure that she maintains good muscle mass.

When it comes to epee training, the lessons vary. “Before a competition, we can do more than one per week.

There are individual lessons and team lessons. I like the two types of training which allow me to develop different strategies.”

When a fight does not go as well as she would have liked, she does not hesitate to take a step back to seek to improve.

“I try to take the game point by point and find what would be the best strategy to adopt in such situations.”

CISM

Although she no longer competes at the military level, Capt McRae continues to be involved with the fencing program of the Canadian Armed Forces. She now represents Canada on the CISM fencing committee which brings together 140 countries.

Her experience as a CISM athlete from 2001 to 2015, her years of experience as an officer, and the fact that she speaks five languages make her a good fit for the organization.

Summer camp A grant for military families This year marks the 9th edition of the national Support Our Troops summer camp program. This grant program allows eligible families of serving CAF members to receive reimbursement so that their dependents can attend an accredited summer camp of their choice.

On June 17, the Montreal Garrison's Personnel Support Programs (PSP) team is offering CAF members and civilian employees (members of the Sports and Recreation Plan) the opportunity to participate in a triathlon that will take place at the garrison.
