In response to a request from the provincial government, 200 reservists from the 34th and 35th Canadian Brigade Group (34 and 35 CBG) were recently deployed in several regions of Quebec to support the vaccination campaign for the booster dose of the vaccine against COVID-19.

The 34 CBG mainly deployed its members to Montreal and Laval, while 35 CBG deployed reservists to vaccination centres in the Mauricie, Centredu-Québec, Estrie and ChaudièreAppalaches regions.

“We did not expect an impact as big as this. We knew, however, that the arrival of the CAF members would give us a hand and offer some rest to our people, most of them retirees who have been working hard to support vaccination for the past few months,” said Élise Dufour, COVID-19 vaccination manager for the Trois-Rivières and Nicolet region.

In each vaccination centres, CAF members mainly perform administrative tasks, help with reception and contribute to the disinfection of areas and equipment. According to Ms. Dufour, the contribution of the reservists has been major. “In the last week, thanks to their help, we were able to give 3,000 additional doses of the vaccine to the population, which is huge!”, she mentions.

“CAF members are motivated, autonomous and particularly skilled with our computer system. Their presence gives a boost of energy to our entire team.

Public Affairs - 2nd Division Canadian Support Group Between February 14 and 18, Saint-Jean Garrison will be holding a confinement exercise called BASTION VERROUILLÉ.

This exercise allows the garrison employees to perform the necessary procedures in the case of an active shooter.

Sergeant Hoang Vu Le Sailor 1st Class Laurie-Ann Dugas

HMCS Donnacona Deployed at the Palais des congrès de Montréal vaccination centre Originally from Quebec City, Sailor 1st class Laurie-Ann Dugas enlisted three years ago. She is the Botswains Divisional Petty Officer with Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Donnacona. She was available when she was asked to participate in the operation and had not taken part in Op LASER two years ago.

Why did you join the CAF? When enlisting as a diver , I never would have imagined doing this task. But in the end, we help the population and that is why we serve our country.

What are your tasks on Operation VECTOR? I am the platoon regulating officer. I make the link between the chain of command and the sailors on the field.

Canadian Grenadier Guards Deployed at the Ville Saint-Laurent vaccination centre Originally from Vietnam, Sergeant Lê enlisted 10 years ago. He is a rifle platoon commander with the Canadian Grenadier Guards. Having just completed his bachelor's degree in accounting, he was available when he was asked to participate in the operation.

Why did you join the CAF? I was a cadet when I was younger. I had friends in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and wanted to serve. I accepted the challenge to join the CAF. What are your tasks on Operation VECTOR? I'm a platoon commander. Our tasks are mainly those of administrative agent. We proceed with the registration of users and we carry out the data entry. We ensure the recovery of users in the rest area after receiving their vaccine. We work closely with civilians.

I ensure compliance with force protection procedures and measures. I also observe the morale of the members. We support civilian staff to lighten the workload and speed up the vaccination process in the vaccination centre where we are deployed.

What is rewarding about the tasks you perform? It's fun as a task.

I appreciate the contact with civilian employees and the population and I like to see how the centre operates. Shifts pass quickly when there are a lot of people. The civilian employees and the population are sympathetic to our involvement in the vaccination campaign.

What is rewarding about the tasks you perform? The most gratifying thing is to interact with the staff of the vaccination centre and to receive positive feedback on our work and how we improve the efficiency of day-to-day operations.

Had you participated in Operation LASER two years earlier? Yes. There are many similarities between LASER and VECTOR operations, because we participate directly in helping the population. We feel useful.

What will you remember from this operation? It was a great opportunity to practice my leadership, see how the vaccination machine works and see behind the scenes. At the professional level, it allowed me to learn the different facets of leadership and to put my knowledge of domestic operations into practice.

What will you remember from this operation? The appreciation of the people. This gives me greater experience and it makes me see other areas of society (health, running a vaccination clinic, etc.) in addition to learning how to manage staff during a domestic operation.

What are your responsibilities within your unit? I am an armored crew member. I work full-time for my unit's quartermaster. In terms of logistics, I make sure that my colleagues have all the equipment they need for training and for their development.

Why did you enlist in the Reserve? I enlisted in August 2017 to take on new challenges and support the people of my country in times of need. Also, since my childhood, I have always been fascinated by the power and versatility of armored vehicles!

Your other deployments? I participated in Operation LENTUS during the floods in Quebec in 2019. Using our light armored vehicles, we were helping civilians reach certain submerged areas so that they could recover personal effects.

What is your contribution to Operation VECTOR? I mainly help to register on the Clic-santé digital platform the information relating to each person who is about to receive a booster dose of the vaccine.

Your impressions of this deployment? I enlisted to go on deployments like this. Native of Trois-Rivières, I have a strong sense of belonging to my community and I am happy to be able to help the local population near my home. The atmosphere is currently very good and our morale is at its peak. We are all motivated to fulfill this new mandate. If a deployment opportunity like this presents again, I will definitely volunteer!

What are the skills you have developed during your military career? Like never before, I had the opportunity to develop my concentration, my global vision of the tasks to be performed and my leadership. I would eventually like to have the opportunity to be deployed abroad in order to put these new capacities at the service of populations in difficulty.

I recently did my college studies in History and Civilization at the Cégep de Trois-Rivières. I would like to start a bachelor's degree in international relations at Université Laval soon.

Why did you enlist in the Reserve? My two brothers were already members of my unit when I joined in 2018. One of them also had the opportunity to be deployed in Afghanistan. I saw the fun and the pride they both had in serving. It was a great source of motivation for me.

What are your other deployments? I participated in Operation LENTUS in 2019. This is the Canadian Armed Forces effort to fight floods in Quebec and support vulnerable populations during natural disasters. During this operation, I was the driver of the tactical armored patrol vehicle. We walked the streets to see which houses would need dikes and sandbag walls to protect them from the rising waters. I then had the opportunity to learn how to work with different civilian trades such as firefighters, paramedics and police officers.

Your contribution to Operation VECTOR I help point people in the right direction when they arrive at the vaccination centre. In the waiting room, I also make sure that the vaccinated people do not feel unwell after the inoculation of their new dose of the vaccine. If anyone experiences side effects, I notify a medical official immediately. I also help with registration of people and some administrative tasks. Our days are busy. We work an average of twelve hours a day.

Your impressions of this deployment? We are happy to get up in the morning to help the local population. It is also a pleasure to have a special bond with our fellow citizens during Operation VECTOR. What skills have you developed through your military career? I am much more motivated, organized and determined to achieve the goals I set for myself.

Two years ago, Master Warrant Officer Stéphane Paquette, Sergeant Major of the Saint-Jean Garrison, made a decision that changed his life: drastically reduce his alcohol consumption. Today, he is happy, feels good about himself and is proud to have chosen the path of moderation.

While posted in Kingston in 2018-2019, MWO Paquette met with his doctor.

It was at this moment that he became aware of his situation with alcohol.

Often, I opened a second one and emptied it.”

He goes on to mention that alcohol had no adverse effect on his mood. “I wasn't one to get nasty or violent when I had a too much drunk. On the contrary, I was considered a merry man. When I felt I had had enough, I would go to bed.”

Today, he still consumes alcohol, but in a much more moderate way. He explains that he appreciate the benefits.

“I feel so much better physically! Now, on Saturday mornings, I am up early. I work on my yard or in the house. My wife, even if she had never really complained before, admits finding it much more pleasant to be able to spend more time with me.”

MWO Paquette explains that on Saturdays, he was rarely active before noon. “I slept all morning. In fact, I was sobering up from my drinking. I would get up and start pouring alcohol again.

It was like that until Sunday evening.”

The CAF member explains that over the years, he had not realized how important his consumption had become. “I was not considered an alcoholic, but I used a lot. I kept saying that I only drank on weekends. When I got to thinking, I realized that I had a beer or two after every practice or hockey game with friends.

And I must admit that I played hockey quite often during the week!”

CHANGE AND PERSEVERE

On Fridays, MWO Paquette opened a bottle of wine when he had supper with his wife. “My wife would only drink one glass and I would finish the bottle.

For the CAF member, Monday mornings were particularly difficult. “I used to come to work very tired and the day was long. On the other hand, I have never allowed myself to be absent from work because of it. It was against my principles.”

Although he is satisfied with the level of weekly alcohol consumption he has reached, MWO Paquette indicates that for him, the work on himself continues.

“It is an ongoing process. Especially since next May, retirement will await me. I will have to continue to be disciplined.”

It's time to talk!

At press time, January 26, was the traditional Bell Let's Talk Day. Each year, this campaign reminds us of the importance of taking care of others, especially during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic which has lasted for 22 months.

For the occasion, civilian employees and CAF members of the Saint-Jean and Montreal Garrisons were invited to take photos with campaign props to demystify mental health. In addition, on the Montreal Region Personnel Support Programs (PSP) Facebook page, video clips were posted to promote mental health and mutual aid within the military community.

Remember that within the Canadian Armed Forces, the campaign continues to focus on actions. To this end, the Mission: Ready program offered a virtual conference by Ms. Sonia Lupien, doctor in neurosciences from the Université de Montreal and scientific researcher. (Y.B.)

The Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) offers you a weekend, a break to reflect, alone or as a couple, on the transition that your leaving the CAF brings. This stopover will take place at the Estrimont suites & spa hotel on March 25, 26 and 27, 2022.

Accommodation and meals are covered by the MFRC. Other personal expenses are at your expense (eg travel, alcohol, activities on the site other than those offered in the program, babysitting, etc.).

During this retreat, you will have the chance to participate in workshops that

will address the various psychosocial issues of transition, to participate in activities and to meet other people who live a similar reality to yours.

SPECIALIZED WORKSHOPS

The Psychosocial Transition Strategies workshops were designed to guide you through a process of reflection and action that follows a logical sequence. The workshop includes 3 meetings of approximately 2 and a half hours. Participants will receive an accompanying notebook, called Logbook. It will serve as a basis for individual, family or conjugal reflection.

Here are some of the topics covered: • The effects and grief associated with injury, illness and transition; • The support of someone who is grieving; • The adaptation process (where are you?)

• The spheres of life, needs and values; • Family and marital issues; • The social network; • Hope/opportunities; and, • Toolbox, skills and resources.

Warrant Officer Alexandre Pitt, road safety supervisor at the Resource Conservation Service of the 2nd Canadian Division Support Group, explains that there is an increase in DND vehicles caught by radar photos in Quebec. “Don't believe that if you use a DND vehicle, no one will be able to trace the person who was driving at the time of the offence.”

On the contrary, each time the military police receive statements of offense

related to the use of a DND vehicle, an investigation is initiated to trace the driver. “Sooner or later, the person at fault will be caught and will have to pay the costs related to the violation.

And, the longer it takes, the more interest accrues due to late payment. It is therefore important to respect the speed limits.

WO Pitt mentioned that according to DND and Canadian Armed Forces policy, CAF members and civilian employees (Public Service and NonPublic Funds) must always obey provincial and territorial laws when driving DND vehicles. “You should never forget that there are eyes everywhere when you are on the road. If you do not respect the laws, you can be reported by any other driver and this can have serious repercussions.”

The Grande expédition des Premières Nations is postponed Last week, Corporal Patrick Brunette, of the 34 Service Battalion (34 Svc Bn), learned that the Grande expédition des Premières Nations (the Great First Nations Expedition) he was about to participate in was postponed until next year. Even if he is disappointed, he remains convinced that this will further strengthen the team spirit between the fifty participants.

It is with great wisdom that Cpl Brunette speaks of the organizers' decision. “We were nervous because the departure date was approaching, but we understand the situation so much! This is not the time to go and spread the virus in the Far North.”

The CAF member is convinced that all the sponsors will understand the situation and will continue to support the project which will be held from February 14 to March 4, 2023. “It will also be a good opportunity to seek other support.” He mentions that TVA Sports has partnered with the project, among other things, and has started shooting images for a documentary. “They will follow us regularly throughout the year.”

He explains that this trip is, in a way, a nice way to come full circle. “I have already worked in northern Quebec with the Canadian Rangers. This is an opportunity to return to aboriginal communities.

WAITING

Corporal Patrick Brunette has been a snowmobile enthusiast for 35 years.

A BIG PROJECT

Cpl Brunette recalls that this expedition has been in preparation for a year now.

“This is the largest snowmobile expedition held in the Far North. It is a historic event whose mission is to immortalize the reconciliation between the nations of Quebec. During this expedition, 4,500 km will be traveled from south to north and from east to west.”

He explains that seven nations are involved in this project: Attikamek, Cree, Innu, Inuit, Mohawk, Naskapi and Quebecois. “Each nation will contribute to this adventure by welcoming us in an extraordinary way. The event will be highlighted by several ceremonies, shows and traditional activities.

SNOWMOBILE ENTHUSIAST

Just because the expedition is postponed until next year does not mean that nothing will happen in the coming months. Cpl Brunette assures that on the contrary, participants who live in the Montreal area will meet on a regular basis to practice. “We will be doing shorter expeditions to be even better prepared for the big day.”

He goes on to explain that all the participants in the project are extremely connected. “We are all connected by Messenger and we talk to each other every day. The team spirit is very strong between us. It’s really great fun to be able to talk to them.”

No more plastic bags

BLOOD DRIVE Saint-Jean Garrison would like to invite the military and civilian members of the Defence Team to the blood drive on Wednesday February 9, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Patriote mess.

CANEX stores across Canada have put an end to plastic bags.

The company estimates that around 3.5 million plastic bags will not end up in landfills nationwide this year. This is an initiative that is part of the federal government's plan to eliminate plastic waste to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and health measures, donators will have to make an appointment at 1 800 343-7264 or at jedonne@hema-quebec. qc.ca before.

Frank Rocchetti, senior vice-president of CANEX, recalls that at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, all of the chain's stores stopped using paper flyers and removed single-use posters.

Note that stores will be able to sell reusable bags to their members. This includes bags from Soldier On and Support Our Troops, which receive 15% of the proceeds from each bag sold.

Twelve employees of the Personnel Support Programs (PSP) of SaintJean and Montreal Garrisons reached the Platinum level in the FORCE evaluation tests. And this, despite the ongoing pandemic!

For Maxime Bonneau, reaching the Platinum level is not a big surprise.

A FIRST FOR THEM

Mathieu Ramanandraitsimavo was proud to reach the Platinum level for the first time. He says the toughest challenge was the sandbag lift. “I broke my finger in September and my grip strength was not optimal. I still managed to do the test in 37.5 seconds, despite my initial apprehension.

Others are on their second or third Platinum experience. This is the case of Bruno Lavergne who made the necessary efforts to meet the challenge during the last tests. “I did strength training and circuit training 3 or 4 times a week for about 3 months.”

Alexandre Lévesque explains that diligent and specific training is the key to success. “It is very difficult in times of a pandemic to keep a routine.

However, I believe that with good discipline, we can manage to maintain a good level of physical activity and healthy lifestyle habits. Both will have a huge impact on our physical and mental health.”

BEING WELL PREPARED

For CAF members who must pass the FORCE Evaluation each year, it is a real motivation to see the PSP fitness instructors and coordinators perform well. “These training specialists also offer personalized programs as well as courses to help those who wish to improve their results,” says Alexandre Lévesque.
