THEME DEVELOPMENT

A theme should be relevant to the lives of students at the school, unify the yearbook verbally and visually, and use details specific to the school and/or the year. Strong theme development adheres to the guidelines below.

COVER

The cover and spine introduce the theme verbally and visually with a fresh concept specific to the school year. Applications, fonts, colors, and graphics link to the theme.

ENDSHEETS

Printed endsheets provide a smooth transition from the outside of the yearbook to the inside. While a table of contents is traditional, the front endsheet also serves as an opening spread and the back endsheet as a closing spread.

• Endsheets may be a plain unprinted color

• If customized, endsheets reflect the theme visually and verbally

• Back endsheets may contain colophon or closing theme copy

OPENING/CLOSING SPREADS

Opening and closing sections are one or more spreads after the title page and before the parting page that reinforce the theme’s visual message. Theme copy utilizes creative storytelling. The opening copy allows readers to understand why the theme was chosen for this yearbook, and the closing brings the theme to a conclusion.

DIVIDER SPREADS

Spreads opening each yearbook section have a similar design and visually spin-off of the opening/closing spread(s) design. Divider spreads feature photographs and copy that link the theme to the upcoming section’s coverage.

READER SERVICES

Table of Contents, page numbers, index, and colophon all play an important role in creating a fully articulated theme. They are not optional.

• Table of contents is accurate and may contain page descriptions or teasers

• Index is alphabetical and includes students, staff, clubs, or teams

TITLE PAGE/PARTING PAGE

The title page, as the reader’s first inside impression of the yearbook, and the parting page, as the reader’s last inside impression of the yearbook, reflect the theme’s design and/ or tone.

• Title page contains descriptive data about the school such as location, web address, and/or student and staff population numbers

IT’S COMPLICATED...

High school may feel complicated, but The Dragon staff smooths out the edges with soothing curves and they calm energetic patterns by softening a bright color palette. Features like “speak up” and “tell me more” encourage students to share their angle on each story, while tilted text and pages underscore the theme.

BECAUSE WE DO.

The Vieo staff answers the “whys” with a theme that shows all the reasons for working together and making the moments count. Starting with a quote on the cover and ending with circle-shaped punctuation, rounded photos and horizontal bars are repeated in designs to showcase student activities and voice.

The Dimensions staff has so much to say about 2023 with headlines like “jam-packed summer,” “Gatsby galore,” and “Here’s the kicker.” Horizontal timelines reveal “so much” about each week, and the “o” sound is emphasized by circles in a rounded font as well as repeated circle photos, pie charts, and partial circle graphics.

ALIGNED ELEMENTS

Text and design elements placed with edges lining up horizontally or vertically to the left, right or centered. Alignment helps to create order, organize elements, create visual connections and improve the readability of design.

CAPTIONING

Photos include accompanying archival information about the subject and context of the photo to better connect the reader to moment captured in print.

CUTOUT PHOTO

A photo in which some or all of the background has been removed, usually using Photoshop or another photo editing software. Attention to detail is important when using this effect.

DOMINANT ELEMENT

One element, usually a photo or a group of photos which is obviously larger and more eye-catching than all other elements on the page. Having a dominant element is a key to a good design.

EYELINE

A horizontal guideline or implied line across the design to draw the viewer’s eye into the page. An eyeline brings balance to the design layout and helps to visually unify the spread elements.

FOLIO CONTENT

Page numbering and content that appears on the outside portion of the pages, usually at the bottom.

FOLIO DESIGN

Thoughtfully designed folio content that adds to the look and feel of the spread and reflects theme graphics.

HEADLINE DESIGN

The combination of a primary headline and secondary headline that uses font, color and placement to visually reflect theme and content. Various headline styles are used like Kicker, Hammer and Tripod. Readability is the primary focus when designing headlines.

HEADLINE PHRASING

The primary headline is usually 3-5 clever words. The secondary headline is a short sentence that gives background detail to support the primary headline.

HEAVY COVERAGE OF STUDENTS

The image or design represents a segment of the student body.

INFOGRAPHIC CONTENT

An easily digestible design element that tells the story by focusing on essential facts, figures, poll and survey results, typically presented in a visual way that includes illustrative art.

PHOTO ILLUSTRATION

A photo that is used to visually define an idea. Photo illustrations are often photos that have been electronically enhanced or posed.

PHOTO PACKAGE

A grouping of photos on a specific and focused topic, often with tight internal spacing.

PHOTO QUALITY

Many factors determine the detail an image can convey, including how sharp the focus is, the exposure range, contrast, lighting and color. Images at full size 300 DPI provide the best resolution.

PHOTO STRIP

A linear configuration of photos running vertically or horizontally across a page or spread.

PULL QUOTE

A student’s voice or interview quotation is pulled from the copy and featured as standalone quotation, featured alongside copy or as its own module.

QUICK READ CONTENT

Easily digestible content, provided in a format that only takes seconds to read. Quick reads help tell the story by focusing on essential facts, figures and quotes.

QUOTES

Word-for-word statements from sources, showing a reaction to, an explanation for, or an interpretation of an activity, event or issue.

An attractive and purposeful use of type, shape, line or color that showcases the win/loss record of the season and enhances the spread overall.

STORYTELLING

Photos incorporate photojournalism style to capture the elements that make up the moment: action, reaction and emotion.

UNIQUE IDEA

Unlike anything else in comparison. Very special or unusual.

USE OF COLOR

Color that has been incorporated into the design in a way that adds interest while simultaneously allowing the photographs to be the center of interest. Color selection should be a thoughtful accent to photos and design.

USE OF FONT/TYPOGRAPHY

A combination of fonts that reflect the theme of the yearbook, are readable and interact well.

USE OF GRAPHICS

Lines or shapes thoughtfully, and usually subtly, used to enhance the design of a page so that photos remain the star of the show.

USE OF MODULES

Modules tell the story of an event or topic, which add an angle to the main story in an inclusive way, but are separated from other content by white space or graphics so that the spread does not look cluttered.

USE OF SPACE

An unoccupied part of a design; so named because the background, often white, is visible. All white space is planned and includes margins, interior spacing, and is used to establish relationships between page elements through proximity or distance.

A collection of different design, photos or text.

COVER APPLICATIONS

BEVEL DEBOSSED

Text or art is cut at angles and then pressed into the cover. This effect is most often used with foil.

BURNISHING

The cover is branded using high heat, a die and pressure, resulting in a dark, rich pattern pressed into the cover with a traditional feel.

CUSTOM EMBOSSING/DEBOSSING

A crisp raised or recessed effect on the cover surface is created using a die, heat and pressure. Embossed items are raised on the cover, and debossed items are recessed.

CUSTOM LITHO

Covers with this treatment are often colorful and visually intricate, producing detailed images and graphics. Think of this like a giant photograph.

CUSTOM MATERIALS

Special materials, available in a variety of colors in Fabrikoid, Earthstone and Leathertone, are used for a traditional feel.

CUSTOM PRECISION CUT

Using laser technology, designs are cut through the cover to reveal the front endsheet.

CUSTOM SCREENED

One or more silkscreen ink colors are used to define line artwork, text or images in high contrast.

FOILS

Special patterns and textured foils, available in a variety of metallic colors, are stamped into a cover using a foil die.

GLITTER

Material available in an opaque solid or as a transparent accent, with the look and feel of actual glitter that does not come off.

GRAINS

One of 47 patterns available, from Mission to Linear Diagonal to Pebble, is pressed into the cover material.

LAMINATIONS

Gloss, matte, super-matte, holographic or grit finish of lamination are added to emphasize details or photographic cover art design, making the design more vibrant.

LENTICULAR TIP-ON

A composite image is applied to produce an illusion of depth. The image changes when viewed from different angles. The lenticular is permanently affixed (tipped-on) to the cover, most often within an embossed beadline.

METALAY

Available in gold, silver or copper, a metal material is embedded in an embossed area of a material cover to look like embossed foil.

OVERTONE RUBS

Lacquer is rubbed onto the cover material to emphasize the grain or texture. This is also known as antiquing.

PLEXIGLASS

A clear window of thick plastic replaces the cover board so that part of the endsheet can be seen through the cover.

PREMIUM MATERIALS

Upgraded materials often taking on the look of fabric or leather are used in eight distinct looks: Arlington, Aurora, Bright White, Chic, Metallic, Natural, Radiance and Regal.

SHINEFX

A clear-coat with the thickness of maple syrup that can be smooth or textured and is applied to the cover design to add depth and detail. It can be combined with other applications, like foil, to enhance their effects.

SILKSCREEN INKS

Silkscreen inks are typically used on a material cover, and can be applied to flat or embossed areas. 31 options are available in a full spectrum of colors including black, clear, metallic silver and white.

SPECIAL INKS

Custom inks provide one or more of the following effects: fluorescent neon inks glow under ultraviolet black light; glow-in-the-dark inks glow after being exposed to light; and solar active inks are nearly invisible under normal lighting conditions which reveal themselves when exposed to direct sunlight.

THERMAL INKS

Black thermal ink is used that reveals a design or photography when heat is applied.

TIP-ON

Printed, self-adhesive images or applications which are permanently affixed to the cover, most often within an embossed beadline. Tip-ons can be comprised of anything that can be printed, such as a lenticular, varnished or laminated for protection or a chenille varsity letter.

UV COATING

A clear, thin layer of high gloss for accents is applied. UV coating is especially effective in drawing attention to photos, type, or artwork when combined with super-matte lamination.

NOTABLE PHOTO ELEMENTS

BACKGROUND SIMPLICITY

A controlled background is free from unnecessary elements like trees or people that distract from the main subject. By repositioning themselves even slightly, the photographer can impact the background.

CENTER OF VISUAL INTEREST (CVI)

The most important element of the photo is that the main subject is most prominent in the photo. The viewer’s eye is naturally drawn to the center of attention.

COLOR HARMONY

A good mixture of color, producing dramatic effects and pleasing to the eye.

CONTRAST

The range between the lightest and darkest tones. Contrast provides more detail, shape, pattern and texture.

CROPPING

Eliminating wasted space around the edges to keep the viewer’s attention focused on the main subject. Fill the frame.

DEPTH OF FIELD

A shallow depth of field creates emphasis on the main subject. For instance, a wide f-stop such as f/2.8 or f/4 isolates the subject by focusing on it while blurring the background.

EMOTION

The photo communicates a feeling or evokes a mood. Examples often include hugging, crying or celebrating.

FRAMING

Using natural frames, like doorways, trees and human arms, to accentuate the importance of the main subject.

GOLDEN HOUR

A period of time shortly after sunrise or before sunset where the daylight is diffused, providing a natural, warm golden tone.

HEIGHT OF ACTION

Captures the perfect moment — the peak of the action, reaction or emotion.

LEADING LINES

Natural lines lead the viewer into the photo. Leading lines can be literal, like arms, or implied, like eye contact. Lines can pull you into the main subject or on a journey through the scene.

LIGHTING

Control over how light affects a photograph by taking advantage of highlights and shadows that distract or enhance the image. Effective lighting places the light source to the side or behind the photographer.

PORTRAIT

A dramatic, tight headshot of a person in the environment of the story.

REPETITION

Geometric shapes like curves, triangles and circles add energy to the photo. Any shape or subject that is echoed three or more times creates a pattern.

RULE OF ODDS

Images are more visually appealing when there is an odd number of subjects.

RULE OF THIRDS

Placing the main subject in the hot spot where imaginary tic-tac-toe lines intersect adds balance and interest to your photo. Some cameras offer an LCD screen grid option to guide you into placing your main subject in intersecting lines.

SHARPNESS & SHUTTER SPEED

A slower shutter speed captures movement and will give the photo a different look and feel. A fast shutter speed will freeze the action. A shutter speed of 1/125 or faster is recommended to keep your subject focus sharp.

SILHOUETTE

A subject that appears dark in contrast with a bright background. Often photographed several minutes before or after sunset, as well as sunrise.

STORYTELLING

Capturing a moment in time that makes the viewer curious about the story behind the photo.

SYMMETRY

The left and right side of the photo are balanced. Add a main subject to the symmetry for interest.

UNIQUE IDEA

Unlike anything else in comparison. Very special or unusual. This could include lighting, composition or a different perspective.

VIEWPOINT

Bird’s-Eye View is an elevated view photographing from above. Worm’s-Eye View is photographing from below, looking up.

The Jostens Look Book 2024 was printed in the U.S.A. by Jostens using state-of-the-art digital prepress technology and offset presses. Final page trim size is 9 x 12 inches. The press run was 320-pages and 10,500 copies.

Pages were printed in 4/4 Process Color on 100# House Premium Matte Text Paper #198. The Premium Matte paper offers the highest brightness and unparalleled smoothness.

The Look Book 2024 pages were designed using Adobe InDesign CC 2023.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Images of yearbook covers and featured photography were captured in-studio at Jostens, MN with a Canon EOS R5 camera.

CUSTOM TIP-INS

A custom vellum sheet with Special Patterned Foil Gold Nugget #387 was tipped-in between the front endsheet and the first page.

A 16-page yearbook design mini-magazine was tipped-in between pages 80 and 81.
