She was awarded Journalism Teacher of the Year in Minnesota for 2008, and she received the Pioneer Award from National Scholastic Press Association in 2005 for outstanding contributions to scholastic journalism. Ellen Austin: Named the 2012 Journalism Educator of the Year by JEA. She is among several teachers guiding a 500-plus-student media arts program, which produces an array of publications and broadcasts, including newspaper, magazine, video and Web. She also advises the Viking Sports Magazine and website at Palo Alto High School in California.
Liz Flores: Staff photographer for the Star Tribune, the largest newspaper in the Twin Cities. Liz’s first love is for documentary photography. She has been a staff photographer at the Star Tribune since 2006. 20

STIFF COMPETITION: This year we received close to 5,000 photographs from middle and high schools across the United States and Canada, with an extraordinary number of highquality entries. THE JUDGING PROCESS: After we have carefully sorted and categorized the photos, our judges join us for a day in Minneapolis. The photos are laid out on tables so that photos can be compared side-by-side in a fair manner. Every photo that is received is viewed and considered by the judges. Each judge puts a cup on any photo that they think should advance to the next round. The “cupped� photos are compared and discussed until the judges have agreed upon first through fifth place and honorable mention.
